Ron Perlman to put on the right hand of doom again! He says HELLBOY 2 to begin shooting this year!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a little info for us HELLBOY lovers. Ron Perlman kicks unholy amounts of ass as that huge red demon and Guillermo del Toro loves the character to a very creepy level. I've seen Guillermo perform disgusting acts involving tentacles, horns and every color of the rainbow... shiver...
Anyway, it seems Perlman has been told that they're aiming to start shooting HELLBOY 2 this fall, which fits in with what I've been hearing. I know del Toro is working on PAN'S LABYRINTH, right now in the pre-production stage, which promises to be his biggest scale Spanish Horror film to date... I've also heard whispers from my gods that AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS may go after HELLBOY 2, if the Ancient Ones are smiling upon us. That is the one I'm most jazzed for. Anyway, here is the word on HELLBOY 2:

The costumes were great, some of the setpieces were right on, but the story was ass. It left a very blah impression.

I liked the first one, and really enjoyed the character of Hellboy. A fun time at the movies, ya know? I still want to see the director's cut, which apparently had some more character development or something.

A nice character driven piece about the descent into total bugnuggyness as the illusion we call reality is peeled away, with the delicacy of a man skinning a cow with a ripsaw! This is horror in the digital age! Show me what you got, del Toro! Go there so I don't have to! What!

As cool and niche as Hellboy was, the sequel will be far better. Remember when X-Men came out? It wasn't that great either (don't get me wrong, I LOVED it, but the overall story was OKAY). X2 was so good that it made "X1" better when placed side by side. Bring it, del Toro, we will love it.

...in his assessment of the first Hellboy. Good. Not great. I bought the director's cut because I tend to buy any comic book based movie that doesn't suck ass. The DC is marginally better, but still not a great film. I will refer folks to the X franchise, however, for a case study in how a so-so-to-good film can spawn an excellent sequel. That and all the things the first Hellboy got right put this on my anticipated list.

I never get posts like this. It was a movie about other dimensions, demons fighting demons, nazis, fishmen and pyrokinetics. Just being "good" is perfectly fine to me. For the director to take such a bizarre concept and make it palpable is above and beyond the call of duty. Of course its never going to be GREAT.

This is technically not off topic, because it ties directly to this thread and Harry's comments on the 3D board. Budget for Hellboy: 66 million. Domestic Gross: 59 million. I know that movies also have international BO, video sales, TV, etc. but this is why Hollywood is dying. Actually it isn't dying, but if it was this would be a good reason why. Daredevil did okay, not great, yet they spin off Electra for a movie. What happens? Poor box office. Studios are so desperate for franchises because they are easy money. Throw a Batman title on any crap and it will do hundreds of millions. For a perfect example look at Die Hard with a Vengence. A movie that I enjoyed, but it was adapted from something original to be a Die Hard. Can't Hollywood just come up with something new? Why must we have sequels to movies that didn't do that well to start with?

Ron perlman was great dont get me wrong and ive never read any of the comics, but as a person who has not read the comics, the story felt kinda weak and was not put together that well. I guess thats what you get for an origin movie. But hellboy 2 will prolly be much better and maybe some more selma blair will get my geek juices flowing. Shes too hot and talented NOT to use.

but movies like Empire Strikes Back and LOTR are the exception not the rule in these genres. Although as a comic book fan I may have become so jaded after the 80's disasters that were Captain America, Punisher, Fantastic Four, etc. that Im just thrilled when a director doesnt completely fuck it up.

The director's cut added about 30 seconds to each scene, and didn't not really change the movie at all. There was one big extended scenen with fire girl, and that was about it. Overall, even with the director's cut, Hellboy was just o.k. All the actors were great, I just don't think they had much to work with. The next movie should drop the lame love story (Hellboy talking with a kid over milk and cookies!!!) and focus on the macabre that all the fans love about the character.

...on the Star Wars issue, I'd argue there's a similar dynamic to the X-Men/X2 thing going on. Objectively speaking, stacked up against other movies of the same genre, Star Wars: A new Hope is a good movie. But it's got a lot of problems that I think we're all willing to overlook because of the ground it broke and the bars it set for what was to come after. Still, I wouldn't call it a "great" film on its own merits (there's some very cheesey dialogue and some of the actors just aren't all the way there). Its sequel, however, was a great film even if you look at it compared to movies outside the genre. There's great pacing, a balance of action and character development as furthered by more seasoned, competent actors and special effects that were light years better than in the previous film and anything released int he same time period (even before Lucas fucked with it, the effects in Empire held up). I doubt I'd have the same fondness for Star Wars (and willingness to give Lucas the benefit of the doubt in regard to his forthcoming installment) if Empire hadn't been as great a film as it was. Of course, it was followed by the largely regrettable Return of the Jedi (and those other two movies I won't speak of here), so maybe the Star Wars franchise is more easily parallelled with the Godfather saga than the X-Men movies (at least until we see how badly the new director screws up 3). Regardless, Hellboy 2 could easily be better than 1 and, if Hellboy 1 was "good" or "good enough," then the sequel could actually be "pretty fuckin' good."

I was enthusiastic as I enjoyed the comics and for the most part it was ok,however the new agent subplot was boring(don't explain nothing to the normal people,drop them in at the deep end :>),it was a bit too bright for me and the shot of Hellboy running across that bridge(wirework cough)was a bit too blatant.I thought that Hellboy would be more laidback and cool like in the comics rather than a bit immature.Saying that I would like to see a sequel just to see what they do with it.Good luck to all involved.

Sorry, I'm not willing to lower my standards just because it's a comic book movie. Especially since a couple great ones have been made recently. Studios are asking for a bomb when they make sequels to movies that don't do that well.

I see a lot of comparisons with Hellboy and Constantine which I find inaccurate. Hellboy is far superior. I found Constantine very confused. Could anyone explain the plot to me. I didn't understand why the twin comitte d suicide and why hell needed them

But I'll only see the second if G. Del Toro is in the director's seat again. He and Sam Raimi are the only two comic-book directors I really respect. (Not that Hellboy was a great movie as great movies go, mind you. And I think Del Toro is a far better Spanish-language movie director...find "The Devil's Backbone" to see what I'm talking about--I don't think there's really any way that movie could have been made in America. BUT, I'm convinced the man just LOVES comic book movies AND as an added bonus, LOVES comic books AND has a lot of fun doing his job. Any man who comes right out and calls his deleted scenes crap--Blade II DVD--at least has a sense of humor about his work, and I enjoy that.) In the meantime, and completely off-topic, and I think I'm going to be campaigning this among this crowd...SOMEONE has to get Bruce Campbell in better movies than "Alien Apocalypse." Reality just cannot be this shitty, ya know?

Hellboy *is* a superior movie, but not because Constantine left you confused. Constatine approached the source-material in a way few films would. There wasn't a whole lot of exposition in Constantine, explaining what the hell is going on. The audience just had to go along on the ride and figure it out as they went along. Hellboy, on the other hand, had Agent Myers to play the audience roll and have things explained to him. That's why HB was easier to follow. Watch Constantine again when it hits on DVD sometime this summer. I think you'll enjoy it more the second time 'round. As for your plot questions, The baddies couldn't get to Rachel Weiz character directly, so they used her sister, knowing that two things would happen. 1) Rachel would react strongly to it and 2) That Constantine would learn about it because it was basically his turf. The sister served as a way to get the ball rolling. Some would say she was a convenient plot device, but I think she was an important element of the story.===========Back on topic: Hooray for HB2. But this is old news. HB2 has been confirmed for, like, six to eight months now.

Sorry, Quint, but... no. Clearly he does not "love" the character; in fact he doesn't even seem to respect Hellboy as presented in Mignola's comics. He took a very, very cool character and turned him into a simpering, lovestruck nitwit... a dopey fifteen-year-old trapped in the body of a fifty-something demon. Don't get me started on "Agent Myers". Ron Perlman is perfect for the role and he did a good job with what he was given; the other actors were good too and the effects people did some great stuff. Unfortunately it takes more than good casting and special effects to make a good movie, even a cheesy genre flick. Too bad del Toro doesn't have what it takes... hence he can KISS MY ASS. I despised "Hellboy" and I spit on the very idea of a "Hellboy 2". Feh.

Hellboy was the perfect comic to movie tanslation yet. Every other comic movie out there fucked with something and therefore RUINED much of the experience.
-Xmen: Sabertooth was wrecked by Singer the idiot. Wolverine starts his descent into only having chicks as adversaries.
-X2: Even WORSE handling of a character, this time with Wolvie getting thrown around by uberlame Deathstrike. Worst fight ever. Good riddance to Singer, go ruin Superman.
-Spiderman: First part was great, but bring in the Mighty Morphin Power Goblin and the movie goes to shit.
-Spiderman 2: Was Doc Ock from Krypton? Cause it sure as shit looked like it with the beatings he took and not ONCE seemed to feel it or show it. Is he liquid metal? No he's a fucking fat doctor with extra arms.
-The Punisher: Piece of SHIT pure and simple. Florida? And what the fuck was with the lame ass gay sailor that tossed Frank around?
Looking forward to Fantastic Four, but I'm sure they will pooch it somewhere in the film.
I have been a fan of the Hellboy since his first appearance in NextMen and not ONCE during the film did I see something that bothered me or really broke from the spirit of the comic.
Bring on Hellboy 2, and the fuckwits that answered with the typical ".:insert movie here:. was shit", you can go fuck yourselves and continue beating it to shit movies like the Matrix sequels and other assorted garbage. -

I think the first Hellboy was like the first Blade movie, where they were just trying to find the right tone. And like Blade 2, Hellboy 2 will be better.

Hellboy was okay, but I never really got into it. Ron Pearlman did a good job as the character, but other than that very little about the movie was memorable. I really could care less about a sequel.

As a fan of the comic books and two books that preceded the Hellboy movie, I must say that I was very satisfied with the end result. Everyone involved with the film understood what worked so well in the original material and they transfered it to the screen sucessfully. The only major change that I noticed was that Hellboy had feet in the film, instead of hooves like the comic; no big deal really.

Most boring movie villain in a long time...no motivation, no emotional development, just a bald-headed muthafucka yelling at the camera and waving that STUPID, LAME metal fist around endlessly...those supposed Lovecraftian beasties sucked the fat one, too...Gawd spare me another Hollywood script featuring some bad guy or other out to summon the ULTIMATE BAD POWER to DESTROY THE EARTH AND HUMANITY AS WE NOW KNOW IT...Hollywood, work harder for your money, you cheap bitches...

I think Hellboy actually did have little hooves in the film. Check the directors cut out where Agent Myers meets Hellboy when he is lifting weights, you can see his feet and it looks like he has the hooves ;)
