SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Word is there might be a bit of scoopage in a interview with Joss Whedon conducted by TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello.

Whedon reportedly does not reveal if he wants a white woman to play Princess Diana in “Wonder Woman,” but Ausiello tells Ain’t It Cool that Whedon does say something about the Amazon warrior’s age in the movie.

Ausiello also says he got Joss to say something about a possible Spike-centric Buffiverse TV-movie. Something new. Something Whedon did not say at that Los Angeles comic-book convention on Sunday.

But back to “Wonder Woman.” Two other recent developments:

1) At that comic book convention on Sunday? While discussing “Wonder Woman” casting, Whedon glanced at “Firefly”-“Serenity” star Morena Baccarin (a pleasant-looking olive-skinned brunette) and said, “Where will I find a dark-haired olive-skinned beauty?”

2) In an earlier TV Guide interview, Whedon said Diana would not be wearing the star-spangled panties popularized in the Lynda Carter TV series. Remember now that the old-school comic-book Diana favored a star-spangled miniskirt. Remember also that when Bryan Singer made “X-Men,” he just dressed all the mutants in black pleated pleather.

At 3 a.m. Eastern time (midnight Pacific time), Ausiello’s Whedony scoopage should be found here.

I was worried Whedon wouldn't leave his own casting pool when trying to find a WW, but this isn't a terrible choice I spose, as far as actresses in his own show go, despite how bone skinny the chick is its still much better than going with Carpenter or Gellar.

  • I figure she's a solid choice. But then, I caught a glimpse of a "Snuggles" television commercial just the other day and thought the woman in it might make a good Wonder Woman, for the two cents that ... might ... be worth.

Some recent Wonder Woman costume variations

    by jocutus

Frank Miller's recent Dark knight sequel had a stylized future Wonder Woman design that seemd to have more of a Greek influence but kept the star spangeled feel. Also, in a recent issue, she fought Medusa and had a whole fighting suit with Greek helmet and cape or cloak of some kind and armored breastplate/ skirt like a centurion might have. but still colorful. Something like that maybe? Keep the Island of Amzons, Keep the Greek myth origins & the lasso & silver gauntlets; drop the invisible jet (she can fly, right?) and drop the star spangled factor just a notch (in favor of the mythical roots). ut the real question is - when to set it? Present day? WWII origins? Ancient times? Lots of possibilites and lots of ways to screw it up. But Morena is lovely. Somebody send her to the gym and hit the weights.

    by dude_gimme_tabs

No star spangled panties, then I won't be there ! Linda Carter in those panties made things happen to me down below that a 5-8 year old boy could not understand ! All I knew is that I liked it !! "My mother told me that if I ever see anything like that I'd turn to stone, and I think it's started!"

    Olive-skinned isn't considered "White"?

    by drath

She's supposed to be Greek, a classic Mediterranean beauty, it never crossed my mind that she'd be white white. I guess I was naive to not see that bullet coming, so I'm glad we dodged it. As for the costume, sorry but Wonder Woman is not the X-Men, her costume changes were all misguided. You don't change Superman, Batman, OR Wonder Woman. Returning to the skirt might not be awful, but the rest should be preserved.

    by oh_riginal

As much as I would rather see the Buffy/Angel universe continued in a series (Faith or Spike spinoff), a movie I can accept if thats all thats going to happen. Tru Calling is dead... so whats keeping the Faith series from happening?? I heard the premise would have been similar to the Kung Fu series, with Faith wandering the earth like Caine. I think that would make for an awesome show. Plus, Eliza is hot, period.

  • As for the WONDER WOMAN flick, I'm wondering if Whedon and Co. are going to use Diana's gladiator-style armor for the costume. That might pacify all the whiny crybabies who can't deal with the halter top and star-spangled panties.

    by mastershake

If Whedon's WW isn't within 90% of Cartoon Network's Justice League WW, it will be crap. You have to have the classic costume. Half the fun is drooling over a 6'-4" amazon stuffed into a teeney outfit, kicking ass. Whedon goes the X-Men costume cop-out route, count me out.

    by htown

The animated Wonder Woman from Justice League is awesome. This again raises the following question: when are they going to give the geniuses behind the DCAU a crack at a live-action movie? Clearly, they get the characters much more than the Hollywood guys they bring in usually do.

Yeah, the classic star-spangled panties is actually what we want

    by village idiot

Lynda Carter and that outfit was an early crush for a very young Village Idiot, and I always figured any new movie would be an opportunity to revisit this crush. But alas... I had a feeling that things would shape up in this direction: Joss Whedon is a feminist, and although 70s feminists adopted Wonder Woman as thier icon, panties and all, I think Whedon might be a bit more against the objectification. Thinking back to the ANGEL episode where Cordy had to wear the bikini for the film shoot, the message seemed to be that sexual objectification, no matter what the pretense, wasn't cool. Regardless of the Whedon's reasoning, this news about the costume is disappointing. And I guess this will make it a little easier not to see it when it comes out.

    I worry...

    by childe roland

...that whatever costume they decide on for WW, Whedon will find a way to keep her out of it (and not in a fun way) for most of the film. I remember Carter spending way too much time in her civvies on the TV show, and that's just boring as hell. Go the star-spangled skirt and silver/gold breastplate route. That's a pretty safe compromise. Although I wouldn't be too shocked if Whedon and co tried to distance the Amazonian Princess from the old stars and stripes theme altogether. It would be a shame, but I could see it happening.

    by zerocorpse

Get ready! This Wonder Woman will be have GIRL POWER! She'll talk about her boyfriend while kicking ass! She'll sit around and talk about relationships with her fellow Amazons, and then call things "neat" and "nifty" while she's braiding her hair. Expect lots of bad lines of dialogue, cheesy pose scenes, and quirky banter. Oh joy. Whedon sucks. I have no faith in his Wonder Woman project. Warner basically lost some of the bigger Wonder Woman fans because of this choice. A woman who can handle Superman in a hand-to-hand fight? She's cool, until Joss turns her into Buffy with a rope.

    Whedon's quote on casting:

    by gheorghe zamfir

Everybody is in agreement that casting is not an issue right now," he says. "It's not a vehicle to be built around a particular star. We want to write the thing, find the right character and then figure out who should play her. There are various famous people whose names have come up, because that always happens, but you know, we're talking about Wonder Woman here. Those are tough booties to fill."

    by gheorghe zamfir

...he says, adding that the new Princess Diana will likely be in her early twenties and played by someone outside the Buffyverse. "It's a movie, not a party for my friends."

You know I keep saying this over and over...

    by jumpstart

...and I'm surprised no one agrees with me. Why is ANYONE clamoring for a continuation to the Buffy universe? Have you considered that the actors maybe want to do OTHER things? Or maybe they don't want to be typecast? You people who want more Buffy-verse don't seem to realize that these folks don't want to be known as the chick- or dude-from-Buffy. Maybe they want to be known as something else for a change and be taken seriously as actors (If you believe they should be taken seriously as actors, ask yourself, when was the last time an actor from a cult staple got blessed with mega-stardom? The only one I can think of is Harrison Ford. Now, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't mind being corrected...although don't get me started on this whole rebirth-of-Shatner nonsense. Nothing but nothing will cleanse my memory of "The Transformed Man." Sorry, I digress). Still, give it the fuck up. Let the fucking Buffy-verse die already, and let it die a graceful, non "Star Trek: Enterprise" sort of death.

But then that's kind of obvious, isn't it, what with the dick - waving macho posturing and all? You should also learn to read for comprehension, dear boy, as I said Lucy Lawless would have been great *back in the day,* not now. Morena Baccarin: well she obviously looks *very* nice. A few months in the gym and she will have the muscle definition necessary to play my favorite Amazon Princess, if Joss so chooses. As for the costume: http://hallofheroes.free.fr/Images/UltimateDC/wonderwoman.jpg. The Perez-era armor and helmet works too. Oh, and a cape. I think she REALLY needs a cape (despite what Edna Mode might think ^_^). But I'm sure Joss will surprise us all. Toppu o Nerae!

Yes, you're right. That incarnation of Wonder Woman failed not because of bad acting, a bad script, making WW powerless, or having no semblance to traditional Wonder Woman mythos whatsoever...it failed because she wore a skirt. That's it exactly.
