Reviews of Tonight's & Tomorrow's CLONE WARS!!

Published at:  Mar 21, 2005 3:57:32 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Episode 21 airs tonight on Cartoon Network; episode 22 tomrrow!

Hi Harry and Herc,

Don't ask me why, what we did to deserve this, but Toonami in the UK
has just screened the first two new chapters (21 and 22) in the amazing
animated Clone Wars series. Before Hyperspace, before any of all that,
just as the fantastic Battlestar Galactica was seen first by us lucky
Brits...

So, what was it like?

In a word - Genius. No longer limited to the 2-3 minute chunks of
action, the restrictions are gone and now we can actually see the
classic storytelling we were familiar with in Samurai Jack. Starting
with a rescue by the clone troopers, rescuing the Jedi cornered by
General Grievous at the end chapter 20, the action and drama never lets
up. We discover the Jedi council's reservations at awarding Anakin the
full rank of Jedi Knight. We catch glimpses of more of the romance
between Anakin and Padme - if anything showing more passion than the
whole of Attack of the Clones. And some suitably touching moments of
such a vast import that it brought a tear to my wife's eyes.

It is also full of cool references. Time passes between 21 and 22, and
you can see the progression in the technology. The clone troopers are
looking more like Stormtroopers. C3PO gets his gold plating. Those
cool ships seen in the trailers make an appearance. Wookies are
attacked by droids on what looks like their homeworld, and all of the
cool lines are there - "I have a bad feeling about this," "Impressive,
most impressive" and even Leia's comment about the smell from Episode
IV makes a brilliant reappearance.

But when I'm not geeking out in true Star Wars fandom, the cinematic
moments and touches we were used to in Samurai Jack are evident.
Little creatures hop about. Obi-Wan makes some great "Jack" faces in
the rain... can't wait until tomorrow for episodes 23 and 24!!!

    Anakin and Padme

    by mafu

I'm glad the relationship between Anakin and Padme will be developed on this show. I read the books by Terry Brooks and R.A. Salvatore -"The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" - before the movies were released, and I thought Anakin and Padme's relationship was the strongest element in both books. I'm serious. Lucas butchered their relationship in the movies, not even filming many scenes that would've resonated emotionally with the audience. I'm not bitch-slapping Lucas, as many are prone to do, I'm pointing out how sad I was when the heart of both books never manifested itself onscreen. So I'm glad to read they're finally showing us some of that relationship.

Ani and Padme's relationship in the films

    by big bad clone

In Phantom, he was a 10 year old and she was a teen. In Clones, he's a whiny teen and she's a senator. He tells he how he'd like to make people do things and how he butchered men, women, and children in a blind rage. And thinking they would be killed, they kiss. So, yeah, their relationship as far as we've seen has been a bit choppy.

I don't know how many women I've seen put up with vile men, because they love them and think that some day, they'll change. The heart is stupid.

    Very cool!

    by bramton1

It's sad that there was more romantic attachment in that 15-minute clip than in all of Attack of the Clones. Anyone know where I can get the first 20 episodes? Waiting for it on DVD takes too long.

I last tuned in to AICN at about 4 pm when I left work. Just now at 9:10 I find out about Clone Wars tonight. What, you say? It aired at 7pm? Thanks for the advanced heads up, asshole! I'll bet it was awsome, too. At least I have a TiVo season pass for the rest of em. Prick.

So what's the deal in the UK?

    by dannyocean01

Missed all the showings on Monday of the Clones. Does that mean I missed two episodes?

I watched some this morning at 8am and I had hoped they were repeats of the Monday episodes. I have a bad feeling I've missed the first two episodes- is that right???

If that's true, please someone grab the bit torrent.

    Big Bad Clone

    by mafu

BBC, you wrote, "In Phantom, he was a 10 year old and she was a teen. In Clones, he's a whiny teen and she's a senator." All right. I'm guessing you didn't read the books, did you? That's too bad, since you wouldn't have made such a shallow comment if you had. I'll give you an example of how Lucas could've enhanced Anakin and Padme's relationship. In the book, when Anakin meets Padme in Watto's shop, he stares at her for about a minute, eyes unwavering. She gets uncomfortable. She turns away and shakes her head, but then Anakin says, "I'm going to marry you." Padme turns to him and meets his gaze, dumbfounded that a small boy would say such a thing. He smiles quietly at her, full of confidence. Imagine if Lucas had filmed this scene instead of Anakin saying, "You're an angel, right?" with no emotional resonance, nothing intimate or foreshadowed. Lucas wussed out, pure and simple. And as a result, Anakin and Padme's relationship is hackneyed and paper-thin. Most of the blame goes to Lucas for this since he personally chose Jake Lloyd, one of the worst child actors ever, for the role of Anakin. As a result, Anakin's character is annoying rather than quietly confident and Natalie Portman had a no-talent hack child actor to play against in the first film. My point was that I feel it's unfortunate Anakin and Padme's relationship will never resonate with audiences like it did in the books.

I don't doubt what you say about the books enhancing the Lucas-written and directed romance that showed up on screen, and I don't doubt that Lucas could have found a better child actor than Jake Lloyd. But really, the fault wasn't in casting Lloyd but in writing anakin so young in Phantom Menace in the first place. If Lucas had made him and padme both be in their upper-teens (which portman could have played more convincingly than a 14 yr old) then the love story could have gotten a head start, and then not have been so rushed in Clones. Having a child anakin was one of Lucas' biggest mistakes,(right along with him not getting someone else to write the love story) and even as it was, let's not assume that any child actor could have done much better with the role as it was written, under Lucas' direction.
