THE WIRE Gets Fourth Season!!

Published at:  Mar 17, 2005 3:28:09 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Son of a bitch! At Wednesday’s “Deadwood” event I specifically asked HBO Entertainment president Carolyn Stauss if there was any word on “The Wire’s” renewal, or even on when a decision might be made, and she told me no.

So guess what HBO issues Thursday afternoon:

For Immediate Release

HBO RENEWS THE WIRE,

ACCLAIMED DRAMA SERIES FROM DAVID SIMON,

WITH FOURTH SEASON TO AIR IN 2006

LOS ANGELES, March 17, 2005 – The critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning
HBO drama series THE WIRE has been renewed for a fourth season, it was
announced today by Carolyn Strauss, president, HBO Entertainment. The 12-episode
fourth season will begin shooting in late 2005, with debut set for 2006.
“THE WIRE just keeps getting better, so we’re delighted that David Simon and his
team will be returning for another provocative season,” said Strauss. “We share the
critics’ enthusiasm for this unique and challenging series, and eagerly await the new
episodes.”

Created by David Simon, THE WIRE wrapped its third season last December.
The first season looked at the national drug war through the microcosm of a West
Baltimore housing project, and the second season focused on a longshoremen’s union
and its struggle to survive. In its third season, the drama developed its portrait of a
fictional Baltimore by exploring the place of the political leadership in addressing a city’s
problems.

I can't wait to start digging on "The Wire". My Boy PK tells me it's the shiz-nitt of HBO, even better than that one Gangster show. Living just 50 miles from Baltimore should make it all the more relevant. GO UofL Cardinals! Take the NCAA all the Way!!!

This has to be the true. HBO has re-invented the wheel with The Soprano's, Deadwod and The Wire. I could live with out TV if these shows didn't exist. And the Sheild. Need's me some Shield.

    by zakchase

I still can't believe the turnaround that show's had this season. What was slow and unfocused in season one is brilliant and jaw-dropping in season two. If HBO is going to stick with "The Wire" despite low ratings, they better stick with "Carnivale" too.

  • I loved 'The Corner', but 'The Wire' just seems like an amped-up 'Homicide' -- add stronger language and the occasional tit, and we have an HBO show? No thanks.

They've been keeping us hanging so long I had feared that The Wire was done for. The Wire is simply the most brilliant, peerless television program currently running (and perhaps ever). Good to see HBO stand by David Simon's masterwork for another season.

with great acting and smart storyline to boot...However, with Stringer dead, who is going to fill the void. Will they focus on what is left of Barksdale's crew (Men without a country) or focus on Marlo's up and coming reign. Iris Alba (sp?) will be missed but I hear he is great in Pieces of April.

The God of the Cable TV Universe Smiles Upon Us

    by chumba

And its name is HBO. The Wire is the best cop show on TV right now, and one of the best-acted and best-written hourlongs ever. To "matrix69" - If The Wire seems like an amped-up Homicide, it may be because the setting and a big chunk of the producing and writing team is the same. But The Wire is so much more and works on levels even my beloved Homicide couldn't touch on network TV. The Wire is an HBO show because there is nowhere else with the balls and good taste enough to air it. If you're name-dropping Homicide, then you must have been a fan of that show. If so, then you will probably appreciate The Wire if you give it a fair shake. If you have only watched The Wire once or twice, give it a few episodes to grow on you. The investment in time is worth it when the season-long setups start to pay off in the last 2 episodes. It's novelistic in its approach, so it takes some patience.

Matrix69 - It's the writing that is the big deal

    by russman

and the acting and all of the other craftsmen that work on it, but the writing... that's what makes the Wire work. The writers take their time to let the story slowly unravel. It's like a chess game. The pieces are set and moved around until the final endgame. Of course, this may be boring to some, but to people who enjoy character development and good storytelling, the Wire is a dream come true. At least I should say, that it works for me.

    by dmann

HBO Makes series to keep us talking. Thats how they attract viewers. If THE WIRE doesnt get enough talk, hold off on renewal til people ARE talking.....and then bring it back because its brilliant writing that defies a logline. CARNIVALE might be back....unless they wrap the story at the end of this series.

The Wire actually has places to go

    by chickengeorgevii

What worries me about Carnivale, is if the storyline of Hawkins/Brother Justin concludes..where does it go? Carnivale has set itself up for a nice, albeit complex, story of good vs. evil. But once that ends, finding another line of that will be cheap. *SPOILERS* (unless they allow one daughter character take over as the new evil...then maybe they have something...make her pregnant, and they really have something)....*END SPOILERS*...however...THE WIRE has left a few doors open....granted, McNulty, Bell, and the Barksdale crew are effectivly gone...but you do have others to take a new story line places...such as Marlo, the new ultra-violent drug kingpin...and Det Sydnor can become the new McNulty, he has the talent and the drive...and then there is the political games being played that has a whole storyline...and finally, there are VERY INTERESTING PAST CHARACTERS WAITING TO BE BROUGHT BACK FROM THE OUTSIDE...say...PREZ?...he's tainted...now let's watch him have a tough time while being the genius that he secretly is....or BUBBLES? who is somewhat hanging out in the wilderness...could he finally become the full time undercover cop?...or SLIM CHARLES? who was out spying on Marlo while the rest of the Barksdale crew got pinched, and is now out to get Marlo back...say with BRODIE? who is watching his whole life disappear as the young kids take over his corners?...and then let us not forget the fact that VONDAS and THE GREEK got away clean, with all intentions of continuing business....and then OMAR is still out there...luking like the motherfucker he is....and then let us never, ever, ever forget that we have not seen the last of MAJOR VALCHEK'S SURVELLIANCE VAN...last seen in the port of Sydney, Austrailia....And thus, good reason to drink! - - - George, The 7th Chicken!!!!

    Public Schools?

    by darquon

David Simon said a few months back that, if there's a Season Four,(paraphrasing here...) It will be about the failure of the Inner-City school systems. The big lie that anyone can pull themselves out of poverty by doing their homework and getting good grades. I wonder if that's still the plan. Series co-creator Ed Burns was a school teacher in West Baltimore AFTER his 20 years as a Baltimore cop.

Here's the actual quotes from Simon on Schools

    by darquon

If "The Wire" makes it to fourth season, said Simon, he plans to explore the failures of the public education system in Baltimore.
"Like a lot of cities," he said, "we have a remarkably dysfunctional school system, one that puts the lie to the idea that if you want to walk away from the street, you can just put your head down and do what's right. You start to get the impression that the children of this city are being raised by the drug corners, that this is a school system that fits with a society where the drug trade is the best deal of its generation."

  • Even today, after three amazing, high-quality seasons "The Wire" remains one of the few television dramas in which pulse-pounding story-telling technique, brilliant directing and powerful acting combine to form truly awe-inspiring art. Entertainment that dares to be original, uncompromising, and most of all, brutally realistic. In a medium that all too often continually insults the intelligence of it's viewers, "The Wire" continues to ask the hard questions, with regard to our collective and ever-changing socio-moral ethics, race-relations and economical status structure, while never talking-down-to, or spoon-feeding its fans. Many years ago ABC presented what they claimed and, in fact, what they promised was the next great urban drama... the next step in profound realism/crime drama. The show, of course was "NYPD Blue". The truth, however; was simply this... that 'promise' for the next truly great, profoundly realistic, urban crime drama was finally realized by David Simon's groundbreaking work.

As far as Carnivale, I hope HBO renews Carnivale as well, I just got into it and I am hooked...I think Season 4 focusing on the school system is great. I was a teacher in the D.C. Public School system before I became an attorney so I know how crazy the inner city school system is. These kids can barely read or write.

Thank God for HBO. Salivating already. Can Cutty steer clear of Fruit? Is Avon going to hook up with Wee-Bey in the joint? Are Marlo and Prop Joe in the thrones now? Or will Avon finger Clay Davis to stay out? Could Carcetti find out about Davis and his connection to Bell and Royce, and use it in his mayoral run? Surely McNulty won't stay on the beat? And does Rawls find a boyfriend? Oh, just let Carnivale die...
