MYSTERY SCIENCETHEATRE 3000Returns Monday!! Kinda!!Mike & Bots Cameo On ESPN!!

Published at:  Mar 14, 2005 1:17:50 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

It’s all for the ESPN series “Cheap Seats.” One can only hope Mike, Crow and Servo savage their bizarro opposites, the hopelessly and relentlessly and massively talentless and unfunny Sklar twins!!

Will it be worth missing the latest installment of “The Real World/Road Rules Challenge”? Well, no, but what would be?

Ever wonder what became of your MST3K pals?

* Joel Hodgson (Joel Robinson) now writes for “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

* Trace Beaulieu (Crow T. Robot) is probably still writing for Vin DiBona’s “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”

* Kevin Murphy (Tom Servo) and Mike Nelson (Mike Nelson), it will sadden you to learn, are now cameoing on ESPN’s “Cheap Seats.”

Here’s a photo, faster than you can say “stillstore”!

10 p.m. Monday. ESPN.

Mike wasn't bad either, but no one can replace Joel and the original voice of Crow T. Robot was hilarious! I'm glad I tape the episodes all those years ago.

My idea: Bring back Joel/Mike and the bots. Get Cartoon Network to allow them to watch REALLY bad cartoons from the WB/Turner/HB library, and do a weekly 1/2-hour show based around an episode of "Fangface", "Superfriends", "Funky Phantom", "Gary Coleman", etc., and air it on Adult Swim. Should be VERY cheap, as WB/Turner/AOL should already own the rights to the programs they'd be lampooning.

...all five flavors of ass. Especially when it was airing on the Sci Fi channel (or was it Comedy Central?) on Saturday mornings. There was nothing better than easing out of your hangover with Joel/Mike and the bots. You didn't have to follow a plot and, for extended periods, you could close your eyes without really missing anything. Come back, guys.

Anyways, I'm all for MST rip-offs and can't wait for the day a group of upstarts try to tackle "MST - The Next Generation" (come on, you know it will have to happen sometime.), but Cheap Seats is pretty weak. Nelson does DVD audio commentaries. He did Night of the living dead and Reefer Madness.

Kimmel and the Sklars are hilarious

    by nny777

I used to hate Kimmel, but he's done a great job with his talk show. I do dislike some of the changes they've made since they started, but it's still far better than Conan has been for the past 5 years or the Daily Show has been for the past year. It seems just about every episode of Cheap Seats has cameos from The State to UCB people. I am a little disappointed that the Sklars aren't funnier on the show considering how hilarious their stand-up is.

What the fuck does Trace write for America's Lamest White Trash Videos? I thought they just threw some homeless guy a quarter and have him do a silly dog voice, and threw in some cartoony sound effects. And Hodgson writes for Jimmy Kimmel? Ooooh, there's a plum assignment. These guys seriously need to get back together, to do more a guest appearance on some shitty ESPN show.

    Cheap Seats

    by columnboy260

That's funny, I was watching the "Cheap Seats" marathon Sunday and was thinking these guys owe a tremendous debt to "MST3K." Then they showed a promo for tonight's MST3K cameo!
Cheap Seats is hit-and-miss but it's more funny than not. The two brothers watch really bad sports specials from the 70s and 80s and crack wise, like Joel and the Bots. Usually the shows are so bad they don't really need commentary to get a laugh.
Thanks for the Netflix tip. I've been going broke buying the MST3K boxed sets on e-Bay.

Mike sounds like a pretty smart guy. The Sci-Fi Channel sucks for cancelling MST3K. The Comedy Channel sucks worse for sitting on ten years worth of episodes and not playing them or selling them to anyone.

Joel was the best host by far. I never enjoyed the show after Mike took over and even worse when the fat womam and the ape came on the scene. So unfunny! The early years were classic. Im starting to laugh just thinking about them :)

    by spiketbb

As much as I enjoyed Joel and his comic timing, I think it was Trace's sense of humor was my favorite aspect. He was the original Crow as well as Dr Forrestor. He had that biting, cutting humor that was out of left field yet dead on. Very dark and funny. The sort of thing where you go "Hey, now that you mention it.."
The tone changed when Joel left but it was still good. I might even say just as good, just different.
But when Trace left, the whole attitude changed. Kevin Murphy and what's her name who played Pearl took over. The jokes during the movie and the host segments lost something.
It was bad enough when Mother Forrestor took over for Frank but Clayton was still around. But when he "died" and she became Pearl Forrestor, head villian instead of Clayton it all went down in quality. I used to look forward to the host segments and run them back on my VCR. In the later years I actualy fast forward past them. Bobo son of Coccoa, my ass.
But I would love to see them return full time. I MISS them.
When they left it vacated a space no one else has come close to filling. One of the few shows that could catch me of guard and make me laugh out loud. Nothing else comes close.
Thanksgiving just isn' the same without MST3k turkeyday.
    BRING IT BACK YOU IDIOTS.
Just be sure to include back Dr Clayton Forrestor and the true Crow T Robot!

    Remember Joel's early days?

    by l.h.puttgrass

. . . AGENT-JAAAAY!!!! I remember his stand-up act. He would interupt his act to suddenly announce that he was, in fact, a secret agent. "I'm not really a comedian." (picks up innocent looking prop) "I'm really... (prop turns into weapon or hi-tech gadget) ...AGENT-J!!!

    Agent J IS Batman!

    by spiketbb

I had forgotten that! He was on an episode of Saturday Night Live once in the early years. Doing his stand up. I guess Agent J's gadget's were early stages of The Invention Exhcange devices.
He did this one bit where he asked the audience to all tilt their heads to the side. He pointed out one woman and said "You...you're gonna miss out." Then he turned his head away and turned back with a Batman mask on and used the microphone cord to "climb" up a wall ala Adam West. VERY outside the box comedy. Laughed myself unconscious.
It's all coming back to me. I like Mike J Nelson but I'm going to have to agree with the "Joel was even better" crowd.
