Trailer link! OK, you just watched the sweet ROTS trailer... now Lucas talks about the movie possibly being PG-13!

Published at:  Mar 10, 2005 9:31:01 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts... Quint here... that trailer is great. Great Great Great. I hear it'll pop up on Hyperspace later tonight and, just to chap the ass of anybody who payed for that service, will also be up on AOL for AOL members. It seriously rocks. One of the biggest surprises of the trailer to me was what looked like a cloaked Anakin taking out another jedi in a cloak. I was under the impression that Lucas created Grievous in order to eliminate the Jedi in Anakin's place. If it's Anakin, Grievous and Palpatine that take out the Jedi together, I will be very impressed. I'll be a little miffed if the Clone Troopers kill any Jedi, though. I mean, Troopers can kill nameless rebels, jawas and Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, but not Jedi. I'd love it if Lucas tied the Clone Troopers into the Stormtroopers by having them be inadequate up against Jedi... or even apprentice Jedi, but I somehow doubt it.

Needless to say, my geeky side is overriding my cynical side and Lucas has got me frothing at the mouth for this movie, against my better judgment. I've said since the first prequel that the one that Lucas really needs to get right is this one. This film is the whole reason to even make a prequel trilogy. Fingers crossed!

Lucas will appear on 60 Minutes this Sunday talking about Episode 3 and it has come out that he believes REVENGE OF THE SITH will be hit with a PG-13. This has been long rumored, but now he's actually said it. He's also said that the film "ends in Hell." God, I hope this is everything it promises to be! YahooMovies! has a story about Lucas' 60 Minutes appearance, which you can read below.

CLICK IT HERE FOR PG-13 GOODNESS!

I'm sure either Harry or myself will update this article whenever the AOL trailer is posted to send you AOLers over to it, so check back throughout the night!

High-rez version of the trailer is up at Movie-List! Lookee! You gotta register to see it, but it's very nice and worth the hassle.

I've had severe doubts about this film, but this trailer looked amazing. Sure, the trailers for the other two looked pretty amazing too, so it's possible that the film might not be as cool as the trailer leads us to believe. But, I'm seriously hoping that this film kicks butt.

All I have to say is, I hope Captain Panaka gets his other eye wedged out! The cynical bastard deserves to be cynical for a good reason. Therefore, losing his other eye would bring his character full circle and make him accept the fact that he is a fart knocker who really just hasnt gotten laid in awhile. Biatch!!!

    "The One that Matters"

    by aetius450

"I've said since the first prequel that the one that Lucas really needs to get right is this one. This film is the whole reason to even make a prequel trilogy." --- that is of course ridiculous. If one sets out to make a trilogy, then one should make all 3 as good as possible. If one is of the opinion that the first two weren't so good, then the 3rd one being great would not change that, or make it less of a waste that the first two weren't better.

    Ian McDiarmid

    by aetius450

Ian McDiarmid is great, but its not fair to judge the other, more maligned prequel actors against him. McDiarmid has a much easier task than say, Christensen and Portman trying to breathe life into a Lucas-written and directed love story.

  • The trailer was awesome and now we know Lucas doesn't give a fuck about the ratings. I don't see how this one can lose. When Mace rolls up with his posse and Palpatine pulls out his shit, awesome. And Padme crying, Obi Wan's line, anyone who says there's no emotion or drama in these movies can eat my sack.

I didn't mean to sound like a basher. I liked TPM and AOTC, I just think they could have been much better. The emoting you speak of in the trailer, I DUNNO, is indeed promising. Hopefully Lucas did take some criticism to heart, and let his talented cast open up a bit and show off that talent.

    by bill maher

Quint, are you trying to be funny or are you really that stupid? You see Anakin leading a bunch of stormtroopers into the Jedi temple in the commercial. Do you think they're following him to hold his cape? No, they're going to start shooting at the Jedi Anakin doesn't kill.

    by blackstormy

I think the story of dark vadar could have been told in one 3 hour epic. Who says there had to be another 3 films, besides lucus's check book. It could have been a classic if he had gotten some great screen writer on board and spent the 25 years perfecting the script then putting all his resources into one kickass film. Hopefully rots will rule anyhow. But the first to prequals are utter garbage. Just totally piece of shit, no reason to exist, piles of crap.

No worries, Maulrat...I hadn't seen the footage in the fan one either. If you like that one, you'll LOVE the real one...At any rate, fool me once, I'm the fool. Fool me twice, I'm the fool who follows him. But still, with this trailer, I sense something, a presence I have not felt since...I haven't been a fan of either prequel (And I thought I was better than II), but other than Hayden's goofy line-reading of "Is it possible to learn this power," I'm now cautiously optimistic about this last outing.

PG-13 is a marketing gimmick, for the most part.

    by omegaman

Don't get me wrong, I'd be glad to see SW3 be PG-13, but I think, unlike here on AICN and other sites where SW fans congregate, I don't think there's as much interest out there for this movie. People feel like they've been burned twice, and many are just outgrowing the franchise - it seems kind of kiddieish to many, I think. Lucas knows this and is using the PG-13 to create some buzz and hopefully get a wider, more mature audience. I have to admit though that as much as it seems like a gimmick, it does make me want to see the movie more than I otherwise would have.

That thing was amazing. The last shot, the one with Darth Vader, I was totally breathless. Obi-Wan screaming "You were the Chosen One!" Wow. Palpatine whippin' out his lightsaber. Wow. Everything about it was just wow. And to all of you who say the trailer being good doesn't indicate the movie being good because the first two trailers were good, well I just went back and looked at those trailers and they really aren't nearly as good as this one, so we can assume that this movie will be proportionately better. At least we can hope. Ah, what does my opinion matter. I am apparently an idiot. I actually love the first two prequels.

    by doom ii

I was shocked at how much emotion I saw in that 2 minute trailer. When the Jedi show up at Palpatine's room and Mace says "You're under arrest!" and they ignite their sabers. SWEET! And Palpatine goes "Are you threatening me?!", then drops a saber out of his sleeve and charges the Jedi, THAT'S STAR WARS! Padame crying and Obi Wan yelling mid-duel "But you're the chosen one!" all confused and frustrated. That trailer was by far the darkest Star Wars preview EVER! It made me a bit depressed actually. It also looked like Yoda gets FRIED by Palpatine's lighting bolts...poor little guy.

For all those who complained about "Story arc" and "lameness" and "Not dark enough". And how the FIRST two sucked... Well get this folks.... LUCAS knows how to tell a story. The reason why this film will be so good is because it finishes Anakins fall. It goes form happy fun time, to crap on a stick in an instant. Only the Darkest night has no meaning without the brightest night. Thus TPM and ROTJ are the galaxy as we optimistically HOPE it will be.

That trailer is so fucking amazing...so incredibly a defining montage for the ages of everything that IS Star Wars...and is so great that even as a trailer it's better than entire MOVIES you'll see this year...that if you can't appreciate it and love it and be jazzed about racing into a theater this May, the kid in you is not only dead, it was aborted at birth. But I'm sure trolls and nitpickers will love to tell us all what's wrong with it or the prequels yet again, or how much better the OT was, or how Lucas is raping their ass one more time. Naysayers, after that trailer, you have nothing to stand on ever again so don't even try. No one gives a shit what you think or cares about your obvious lack of taste or your obvious inability to simply kick back and have some good, solid, refreshing geek fun in the summer time at a movie. Bottom line is Lucas and lightsabers OWN this summer, so deal with it.

Although I'm in the boat of "TPM & AOTC trailers rocked, but movies were not so good", I'm getting psyched yet again (call it hype, call it what you will). I've never been a promoter of the SW bashers, but I say this once to the SW lovers -- don't justify your worth by claiming people are jumping back on the bandwagon. You are sinking to the level of the bashers, and it's just not cool. Everyone is hoping this is a great closer to the saga, so just leave it at that.

The film will NOT "most certainly suck". It will complete the story of the first 2 which were fucking great films on their own. In fact, as Lukecash noted above, the first 2 have a beat and tone specifically geared to set this film up which was Lucas the maestro at work and conducting his cinema audience. All 3 together truly do comprise an epic film event and story. I've said it before, I'll repeat it for wank-offs like you, Ancient: after SITH is out, in years to come people will come to realize the Prequels are the SUPERIOR trilogy across the board compared to the OT films. Which are still 5 star cinema benchmarks, which means the Prequels are truly great. Too bad people like you are so proud to proclaim your inner child is dead and you prefer to be a pissy adult instead. Seriously, you must be a real joy to be around.

  • this....trailer...rocks... i liked Episodes I and II for many reasons... all the jedi characters and actions are awesome in all the prequels. QuiGonn and ObiWan and the jedi council OWN baby... and the way palpatine secretly manipulated everyone and everything in such a masterful way that... well damn, Palpatines rise to power over the course of these prequels was incredible, Lucas is a genius for that single storyline.. the manipulation of laws and maneuvering within the senate and it's laws to get what he wants... amazing. sure, JarJar sucks, Ani from EpI sucks, the romance of Anakin and Padme in II is a farce... but there is so much quality stuff in episodes I and II that well, without even realizing it, Ep I and II were brilliantly done for a couple reasons. they set up everything for Episode III... so many people bitch about how these prequels weren't even about the clone wars or the Jedi Council, well guess what? in case you didn't figure it out by now, they weren't about the clone wars or the jedi council or the empire gaining power... it was about Anakin Skywalker... the entire prequel trilogy was about Anakin Skywalker's fall from heaven... and his decent into hell. there were many side stories, like the aformentioned Palpatine's ascension in ranks. and ObiWan's character's evolution (Ewan McGregor... best thing about the prequel trilogy... brilliant actor. This trailer was amazing, i swear i got chills when i saw that quick clip of Obi screaming "You were the chosen one!" and how they quickly showed Palpatine jumping at Mace and his Jedi posse... chills again. say what you will about George Lucas, but i bet when you watch all three prequels back to back... you're gonna seriously realize that these movies were better then you thought... and for everyone thinking i'm a huge lucas apologist or SW geek, no... i wasn't a big star wars fan coming into the prequel trilogy, that's whyn i like them,i see them as stand alone MOVIES, i'm not carrying any emotional baggage from the original trilogy, the Original Star Wars trilogy were great movies... nothing more, and the prequels... great movies as well, definatly on par with the OT...

But this time there's like a glimmer of hope. I personally thought TPM was okay. Parts were brilliant. Others not so. I really liked AOTC every bit as much as the older SW films. I can't wait for this last one. The trailer is undeniably cool. The title is cool. Lucas hasn't done anything wrong this time... so far. Let's just hope he delivers.

    by kampbell-kid

Judging by the apparant decline of society from reading talkbacks. The complete and utter lack of respect for one another. Hiding words and your hermit lifestyle behind monitors. Plus the actions I witness day to day from insensitive fellow human beings outside of my own home. Is that this film with it's dark tone will be embraced by all overwhelmingly. It's no doubt why all the most popular video games now are ones where you play an anti-hero or someone evil... are on the bestseller lists. The Empire Strikes Back has time and time again been chosen as the fan favorite of them all. However, that is the only episode that has ended on a completely dark somber tone... the good guys do not win! Revenge Of The Sith not only looks aggressively evil and assertive in it's dark approach. It's more than some little band of rebels that don't win, it's the entire galaxy... it "ends in hell" sounds fitting and metaphorical for where the final duel takes place. This film is obvious that it will be the most entertaining episode of them all to watch. The only thing that can ruin this episode is any constant acting that induces a cringe. Either way I love these films for the mere story/entertainment value and am sad to see them go. I agree above with the one poster... be grateful and enjoy the moment. We may have a tv series on the way, but probably not another Star Wars film for the next 20+ years. Which means the oldest generation who's grown up to these will be either dead or at a nusing home realizing the brilliance of the Matrix films. ^.~

Seriously, going from the bad ass cocky moment of Mace and the Jedi walking in with lightsabers drawn ("You're under arrest!") to the equally bad ass cocky reply of "Are you threatening me, Master Jedi?" and the quick shot of Palpatine's saber dropping out of his cloak into his hand led to that truly fucking awesome and jarring cut shot where he leaps at the Jedi revealing himself as the Sith Lord. That quick shot of "old Palpatine" suddenly leaping from his chair and into frame to take on Mace and the Jedi made me literally push back in my seat. it was chilling. I was reacting the same as they were, saying "What the fuck is THIS shit?!?" This trailer was everything I was hoping for. Now I KNOW this movie will seriously rock the world this summer. Lucas never dropped the balls on the prequels -- they've all been solid films and great entertainment. But I agree with others that Lucas has been working us all, orchestrating the films, setting things all up -- all while keeping his eye on the whole saga. But most of all he was keeping his eye on THIS flick. On the BIG prize which is to deliver a truly dark, dark episode. And I think this is the one he's MOST wanted to film ever since he made A NEW HOPE because SITH will be the purest creative counterbalance to that film's optimism with the good guys winning. Which is why you can literally FEEL the adrenaline even from the trailer that's going to be flowing all through SITH. Simply because this is the one we ALL wanted to get to, most of all Lucas himself. SITH is the movie Lucas and the entire world of Star Wars fans have been waiting 20 odd years to finally get to. And I'm willing to bet now, just like NEW HOPE, Lucas batted this one out of the park like a grand slam, and that back-to-back Episodes 3 and 4 will be such perfect bookends to each other that they will now be recognized as the preeminent fantasy film classics of all time.

    by zardoz

Okay, analyzing the trailer. First of all, did anyone else think that Portman/Padme hardly registered? I mean, even Mace Windu gets a nice, tight close-up, along with everyone else in the movie, but not the mother of Luke and Leia? And yes, Dooku was in the trailer, albeit very briefly, when Annakin was fighting him in front of Palpatine, in a shot obviously reminiscent of the scene from ROTJ when Luke fights Darth on the new Death Star. And doesn't Palpatine look like one BADASS MO-FO? That gunslinger move with the lightsaber before he leaps at the Jedi? And how about him hurling that senate hover platform at Yoda? Shee-it! And it looks to me like he kills Mace Windu, too! (I guess Lucas fulfilled SJ's request not to "go out like a bitch") And I agree with a previous poster: I think that sound effect at the end during the title shot is a heartbeat from a sonagram, announcing the pregnancy of Padme with L & L. Finally, does anyone know if this trailer will be playing in IMAX with "Robots"? 'Cause that would be cool!

The only correctly framed version of the trailer is the Hyperspace one, preserving the aspect ratio of 2.35:1--all television rips from the OC preview are cropped to 1.85:1, sadly. by lezbo milk

I think (hope, prey, plead, beg, grovel to the gods) that Lucas will really open up a huge stinky can of whoop ass on us all in the theaters this May 19th. The first can of whoop ass he got me with was back in '77 when I was ten, and he hit me at high velocity right between the fucking eyes! The second can of whoop ass clobbered me three years later when TESB came storming onto the screen. Sadly, ROTJ couldn't get the can off the ground, much less whoop my ass with it. TPM? Well, I was prepareing myself for some serious whoop ass, but didn't so much as get even a whiff (well maybe a bit of a whiff durring the Maul battle). AOTC was able to get the can of whoop ass open, and burp it in my general direction. Now it looks like I am in the position to get my bell rung by a rather large and bad ass looking can of whoop ass! Wind it up Lucass and knock me fucking silly with it man, I really need it!

I kind of agree with Ancient Lights

    by barrelrider

Now, before all you folks with Rebel Alliance tatoos on your ass start to flame the shit out of me, here me out; there is nothing wrong with lowering your expectations for a movie, especially if it isn't even due out for two months. Trust me, I fucked up royally by watch ing every single AOTC trailer repeatedly, downloading the script, printing it out, and reading it 4 or 5 times before I saw the movie. Because by doing those things, I raised my expectations for the film beyond anything it could possibly have lived up to. Hence, and even to this day, I found it to be worse than TPM. I will never be able to objectively say what I really think of AOTC, because I will always have my preconceptions about it in the back of my mind. This is why I and others (including Harry) have been cautioning against this kind of overly zealous hunt-for-details months before you've even got a chance to see the film. You are going to spoil it for yourselves, I promise you. If any of you were alive when the OT came out, chances are you were fairly young, but no matter how old you were, did you get to read the script for TESB before you saw it? Had you saturated your expectations with images from trailers/leaked set photos etc? No, of course you didn't, and you enjoyed the films more as a result. Now, I'm not saying that people like OrionsAngels who've read the script are neccesarily going to hate the movie (unlikely, since the guy clearly loves SW so much that he'll forgive it for a multitude of sins), but I bet you it would be more of an awe-inspiring cinema experience if you knew nothing at all about what to expect. I'll be avoiding this trailer, but I'm glad so many of you enjoyed it.

    by barrelrider

..obviously I'm taking issue with the phrase "king of all genre movies" - are you sure you didn't mean "the king of sci-fi/fantasy" movies? Star Wars comes into both of those categories in my opinion, and I'd have to agree that certainly the OT could be said to represent the pinnacle of that genre. But of ALL genre movies??? So you think the SW saga is better than Shane, High Noon, Unforgiven, Life is Beautiful, Paths to Glory, Apocalypse Now, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill???? And that's only mentioning a few films from four different genres - I could go on all day. Please try to have some perspective when you make your comments, otherwise it's very easy to belittle them.

I also enjoyed the trailer, though theres nothing in it to suggest that it wont have the same huge flaws as the first to. Thats right, FLAWS. You 3 need to face up to the fact that these films are NOT loved by todays chldren or by adults the way the first 3 were. With the emotion that was packed into just two minutes, looks like that argument just isn't going to hold water. "Not from a Jedi" "Are you threatening me, Master Jedi" "Chancellor, you're under arrest" "We do not grant you the rank of master" "Obi-Wan and the Council don't trust me", and best of all "You were the chosen one!" Man, each of these lines are delivered spot on...they are already Star Wars classics! I wonder if Ewan, Ian, Hayden and the rest got together and decided to just go balls out for this one.

    by triumph poops!

Captain Katanga, you need to wake up to REALITY. Read the love in this talkback thread. The joy so many of us are sharing and stop trying to be a boring, lecturesome, wet rag. So let's try it again. The prequels are NOT loved by children or adults outside of the 3 of us you named? Really! After reading the comments here or at other film and fan sites now talking about the trailer, that's a rather astute observation there, Sherlock. Boy, you're dead on target with that one. Nope! No one else loves 'em! Just us! In fact, that would explain the missing $20 bill from my wallet. I guess only the 3 of us account for the BILLIONS (that's with a "B") in revenue that the first 2 prequels have generated so far. And after reading this talkback and other sites, you're right. NO kids and NO adults dig 'em. ONLY the 3 of us actually enjoy these films. So I guess come May 19th I can count on there NOT being any lines to worry about since SITH, being a prequel, will be a complete box office dud. Now on a more curious note, tell me: do you pay much rent for the dream world you live in or can anybody afford to move there?

    Impressive...

    by childe roland

Most impressive! That trailer has me feeling very warm and tingly in my funny parts. Great job, whoever put it together. I can honestly say it has me more excited for this film than I was for the Menace... but that's dangerous. I was REALLY stoked for Menace. And it sucked a lot. I'm sure as much because of how excited I was for it as because of how abyssmally bad it was. I mitigated my expectations dramatically for Clones and, perhaps as a result, I wasn't as disappointed by that film (although I don't think pointing out the obviously detached performances of the film's romantic leads and rather confuddled plot makes me a bitch or a whiner, thank you). Lucas has my bloood up in a good way for the first time in years and, if this movie is as good as the trailer indicates, he will leave me a very happy Star Wars fan. In many ways, although Sith certainly can't improve the quality of the two Star Wars movies that came before it (and I'm talking about a third of Jedi, all of Menace and about two-thirds of Clones that add up to two very painful films out of five so far), it is the one the entire saga is riding on. If we can buy into this and it lives up to the expectations we've all had in our heads for almost thirty years, Lucas will sell a lot more special edition prequel trilogies and I, for one, will remember him a lot more fondly than I'd have been inclined to if he'd croaked before finishing.

i was just trying to point out that the LOVE for the first films isnt there for the new films. Im not saying they arent box office successes, or that anticipation for a new star wars film isnt high (though how much of that is off the back off the first films?). I watched Attack Of the Clones in the Odeon leicester square London, with a thousand strong audience, projected digitally, everyone including me was cheering as the yellow crawl began... and by the end? Complete apathy. No applause, a lot of disappointment. laughter at all the wrong places. the anticipation of a new star wars film, and the fact that it will be a success at the box office does NOT mean that people are nuts for the new films like they were for the old ones. Just watched the new trailer again... it really is great I admit.

Fellow nerds, I've downloaded like 5 goddamn versions of this trailer and this is the only one worth having. It's a rip from HDTV and the quality is fucking unbelievable...I'd speculate that it might even surpass the official, Hyperspace-only copy that has yet to be released simply because this one retains the high resolution really well when you scale it up. by miserableraingod

Everything looked great, sounded great. Overall, the trailer was great at conveying the tragic tone of the upcoming film. It has rekindled my hopes and assaulted my imagination. But it seemed to me like just a disjointed bunch of clips from some very cool scenes. The trailer definitely got me excited, but I like the teaser better, that tied together this film with the original trilogy and the other prequels. This new trailer is just a bunch of very interesting snapshots of Anakin's slow downfall - a downfall that we all know will happen. I'd have prefereed a little more of a flow from shot to shot, a little more of the trailer telling a story. Oh well, at least there's no guy saying, "In a world..." or "In a time of war..." Time to watch it again...

    by captain katanga

Agreed. But outside of the fanboys the love just isnt there, for precisely the reasons you didnt like AOTC. When the first films came out there was NO fanbase, star wars was a sensation because it was fucking good! EVERYONE loved it, even my parents loved it, and were happy to take their starwars fan club member son to see the original trilogy shown back to back right into the early hours... TWICE. I also think theres a hell of a lot of fans that are in denial. A supporter's mentality takes over, where you have to love it no matter how bad it gets. Im sure that theres a small part of these fanboys that, when they see anakin riding that giant potato thing or threepio uttering dire jokes, wants to break down in tears.

    by lazarus long

Katanga and Roland, is that the same one that takes over when you see the blue elephant at Jabba's palace (among other godawful Muppet alien crap), the somnambulant line readings of the respectively drugged out and overweight Fisher and Ford (especially their "lovers quarrel near the end), the Ewoks, and Chewie's Tarzan yell? If you're not cringing at these moments in ROTJ, and allowing the admittedly awesome scenes with the Emperor to color your opinion of the entire film, then you are in denial as well. Jedi is just as bad, if not worse than The Phantom Menace, which I believe has its good moments much more evenly spread out, not just at the end of the film at the Death Star.

    by right bastard

I read this on CHUD, and thought this writer made some damn good points. Better than I could at least. "'We're going to watch him make a pact with the devil,' says the director about the future pop of Luke. 'The film is more dark ... more emotional. It's much more of a tragedy.' Fair enough - the story arc that Lucas laid out for himself (and mostly ignored in the first two films) does require this movie to go to dark places, where the Evil Empire takes over and Anakin Skywalker gives in to the Dark Side. Of course that darkness would be better earned if Anakin had ever been a true hero of the series - the first film focuses on Qui Gon Jin while Attack of the Clones is really the Obi Wan Show. Anakin never steps forward properly into a heroic light which would make his eventual turning so tragic -instead it's going to play like Obi Wan's sidekick betrayed him...(on the PG-13 thing)Message boards across the web will be filled with happiness about this, with some of the people forgetting that what made the original films special and enduring was the sense of wonder, of awe, and most of an innocence that allowed you to remember not how you felt as a child, but how you 'experienced' things as a child."

    by jorgehp

I think it will rock, but I'm miffed by the fact that I won't be able to take my little nephews to see it because I'm sure their mom (my sis) will think that this new film will be too violent for them, and I think I would agree...

Regarding the prequels. George Lucas already stated that when he made Star Wars he took the most exciting part and made it, without being sure he was going to be able to make the other ones. So that's why we get 2 self-sufficient movies in the OT, while with the prequels we just get 1 movie (7 hours long aprox, divided into 3 Episodes) that basically just sets up the OT. Im actually glad Lucas didn't rip himself off on this.

And to the LoTR fans: I love LoTR. But my opinion is that the situation with Star Wars is the complete opposite of LoTR:
whereas LoTR first came from a series of great books (complete with a prequel -"Silmarillion"- that coincidentaly is not as good narratively as the other ones) and then it was addapted succesfully as a movie.
With Star Wars you get 6 great movies (complete with not so great prequel, and BTW we still need to see RoTS for this comment to be completely true) that then gets adapted to dozens of great (sometimes incredible like the Thrawn series) books.

Brothers, lets enjoy this divine variety!!

Lucas is setting you up for disappointment...again

    by nagual

The film you are now all making in your minds is now far superior to what you will actually get. The trailer has obviously succeeded in high fashion--bravo to LFL's ad department. But I will try, in futility, to bring you down to earth again. The game is up, geeks. Even if Ep. III is the most awesome of the 6 films by far--which I highly doubt--it couldn't redeem the stain of the last two which did almost nothing to develop Anakin's character, Padme's character, Obi-Wan's character, or shed very much light on the culture of the Jedi and the Republic. I am foolishly hopeful, like many of you, that this will finally be the first halfway decent Star Wars film in over 20 years. But it seems vaguely depressing to me that we are still standing here with Lucasfilm groupies proclaiming George's infallibility, despite the evidence of the past 10-15 years. Well, enjoy what you enjoy and more power to you, but I'll say that the damage to the OT and to Star Wars overall has already been done and can't be taken back. The time is coming in the post-SW, post-LOTR, post-Matrix (thank G-d) film age for something NEW...

    Lazarus rises... and misunderstands.

    by childe roland

Hey, man, no offense but you really ought to look at the argument a person is making before you leap to all five different flavors of conclusions about something they say or type. My comment on the Katanga's supporter's mentality theory extends far beyond the Star Wars franchise (although I think it's pretty prevalent there, just as it was with Star Trek Enterprise fans) and was more of a general "Aren't people funny monkeys sometimes?" kind of observation. Jumping right to Jedi to make some kind of point about liking the ot and hating the prequels is a mistake if you've bothered to read anything else I've posted on this subject here or in any number of other Star Wars talkbacks. For convenience, I'll refer you back to my post in this thread, where I clearly break it down: "In many ways, although Sith certainly can't improve the quality of the two Star Wars movies that came before it (and I'm talking about a third of Jedi, all of Menace and about two-thirds of Clones that add up to two very painful films out of five so far), it is the one the entire saga is riding on." Doesn't that seem like I might be saying I had problems with Jedi as well and that Clones wasn't all bad? Does it hurt your head to think that not only is it possible for a Star Wars fan to prefer the movies of one trilogy to the other, but that within those trilogies that same fan might find things to like or dislike about each film? Slow down... breathe... and realize that the world's a lot more complicated than you're willing to admit. Lucas has done both good and bad by film in general and his fans in specific. It just seems that lately, starting with elements of Jedi and continuing through all of Menace and much of Clones, he's been striking out as both a filmmaker and a storyteller a lot more than he's been connecting. I'd like to see that change for this movie. Would you rather that Sith sucked? No? Then what, exactly do you want to argue about?

Huh, I really, really wonder. I thought it was going to be a surprise for the millions of viewers who weren't die-hard fans or spoiler obsessives. We don't usually see trailers that give away the big secret of the film. Unless of course this is just kind of set up and Chancellor Palpatine isn't really Sidious afterall, but is only his clone... I mean for a surpise like that to work Lucas needs to make sure that EVERYONE, including OC fans, "know" that Palpatine is Sidious before they stumble into Ep3. This is going to be great!

Because it's so friggin' obvious that everyone already knows it, and those who don't know, don't care (like 90% of the audience of The O.C.). Premiering this trailer during The O.C. makes me wonder though. Is this film going to pander to the tasteless TRL crowd? I can't wait until Lucas' next special edition of Empire. In cloud city, Vader is going to see 3PO on Chewie's back, and we'll get to hear James Earl Jones' voice say "Hey! 3PO! It's me! Annie!" They'll have a tearful reunion and decide to eat chocolate sundays and listen to NSink instead of putting Han in the Carbonite. Don't think he won't do it! Lucas sucks Kershner's balls.

If it is so obvious, why hasn't a single LFL source come out and dircctly said that the Chancellor is Sidious? The difference from the Ani/Vader thing (really dumb example as you will soon see) is that EVERYONE at LFL is free to talk about that Ani becomes Vader, but none are free to say that Chancellor Palpatine is Sidious, not even Lucas! Pretty odd for something that Eps 1+2 make painfully "obvious" and that the new trailer gives away entirely (Hmm, politician holding lightsaber, could he be the Sith dude influencing the senate?). So either it is a mystery or it isn't. Why does LFL seem to act both ways at times? They'll make it obvious, but won't say it... Could it be that they want everyone assuming that P=S without actually having to come out and lie? So if P=S appears to be true (and is what LFL continues to hint at), but really isn't, what is our only option? That the Chancellor is a clone. I apologize for spoiling Ep3.

It's because the big studios romance the spies now. A few years ago Warners, Fox, Disney, etc. all began to realize that their films will get scooped here whether they like it or not. So now Harry and co. get treated like the mainstream press, and they get buttkissed with advance scripts, screeners, tickets. It doesn't mean Harry and the crew are sell-outs, it just makes sense. They don't have time to see stuff like "Millions" if they're at some free party for "The Pacifier."

    by mattmanreturns

Actually the trailer doesn't spoil the Palpatine/Sidious connection. Just because Palpatine springs into action with a saber doesn't mean he's Sidious (even though we all know he is). Did you think Palpatine wasn't a Sith? You know he's the same dude as the Emperor in the end of Jedi, right?

Anakin doesn't recognize him twenty years later any more than you'd recognize a particular toaster in your later years. And did anyone notice that Palpatine calls Anakin "son" in that trailer. If you all remember, I've been saying that the "virgin birth" of Anakin wasn't so virgin after all, but that a Jedi (or Sith) could impregnate a woman and make her forget it ever happened. Think about it. . .

  • But we'll have to wait and see. From the Mace Windu/Palpatine confrontation scene in the trailer, it doesn't look like this is true. It looks like Palpatine pops out his lightsaber, leaps, and... that's all we see. Who knows? I do know that Sidious talks about how he moves his consciousness from one clone body to the next, all the time, in the post-Jedi comics. The Dark Side has detrimental effects on the body. Palpatine being a clone would explain why Yoda and Mace and the entire Jedi Council, the most powerful and learned Jedis there are, could be in the same room with Palpatine and not sense something was rotten in Denmark. There will be surprises in ROTS. We didn't know about the Death Star cameo in AOTC. There is also the theory that Sidious uses the Dark Side to change his appearance, to look like Palpatine, which works, right? But where does he keep his black hooded robe? Does the Dark Side effect that, too? Where are the action figures where Palpatine changes into Sidious? There are both regular, large-sized doll and Lego figures that feature Anakin/Vader transformations. Maybe Dooku is Anakin's father? Who cut off Luke's hand? Who cut off Anakin's hand? Dooku flies in the same formation that Vader does when fleeing from the Jedi. Do you think Anakin was really immaculately concieved? It wouldn't be the first lie told in the Star Wars films. Purely conjecture, sure. That's the fun part, though. Wait and see.

    Misunderstandings, again

    by lazarus long

First off, Roland, I DID read your original post. But let's not forget that you dismissed ALL of Phantom Menace, 2/3 of Clones, and only 1/3 of Jedi. So it's clear to me that you're finding significantly more problems with the prequels, and I vehemently disagree. I believe it is that Supporter's Mentality that is clouding the view of OT Lovers/Prequel Detractors. Because not only does Jedi have recycled material, but Hamill and McDiarmid are the only two that seem to be giving the film any kind of real emotional weight. And the Supporter's Mentality carries over from the last two films when you were connected to the characters. As a stand alone film, it's only 1/3 good, not 1/3 bad as you suggest. While enjoyed Episodes 1 and 2 immensely, I understand what parts people have problems with, and why. I would argue that the same die hards that are too forgiving of its faults are equalled by the overly harsh judgement of the fanboys. There's a lot going on in the prequels, and again I'll say that the good moments are more spread out over the course of the films, as are the weak parts. For that reason I consider them better STAND ALONE films than Jedi, which has a few brief moments of deritvative Errol Flynn fun at the beginning and some high emotional drama and action at the end, but a giant hole of crap in-between. We can argue trilogy vs. trilogy at a different time, because we obviously don't have all the evidence yet. And by the way, Voicebox5, I'm 32 years old, not one of the "younger fans" as you suggested. I saw Star Wars in the theatre at age 5. It IS possible for older fans to enjoy the prequels as much as the originals.

    by performingmonkey

I too am a little pissed off that they revealed Palpatine=Sidious in the trailer. Although some people watching the trailer once STILL might not get it. Lucas must have felt that there was no way to promote the film without revealing it, especially considering Palpatine's larger role in this one (he has more screentime than Natalie Portman). I still wish he hadn't. I advise everyone to watch the trailer frame-by-frame to check out the insane level of detail in the CG this time around. I can't believe how great the shots look. And this episode promises to be the best of the prequels. But anyone thinking it will top Empire Strikes Back might want to think again. Remember, Lucas DID direct and write this film.

Return of the Jedi benefits from carrying over characters that we care about from the first two. Otherwise, it is a worse film than the prequels. The prequels actually succeed in ways that the old trilogy did not (the clever subtlety of Palpatine's political machinations for one thing) but these successes are unappreciated because of the prequels glaring flaws (mostly a lack of likable characters and horrendous dialogue).

I would hardly call three viewings...

    by childe roland

...of Episode I dismissing the film, as you imply, Lazarus. I, too, was five when the first Star Wars came out, and it was largely the reason I became the professional film critic I was when Episode I was released. And at that first screening, I wanted to like Menace so badly that I fudged my review and focused exclusively on the elements that I thought were working (essentially the soundtrack and that final lightsaber duel), completely ignoring the tediously slow-moving plot, piss-poor performances, distracting overabundance of CGI effects and condescending characterizations. I felt dirty when, after reading my review, my brother asked if I wanted to see it again and I, ever the dutiful Star Wars fan, agreed. It was humiliating to have to explain afterward how I wasn't exactly being dishonest by skipping over the glaring flaws (because I so desperately wanted to support the first new Star Wars in 20 years). In fact, I so wanted to redeem the film and my actions in my own mind that I rented it and watched it by myself more than a year later, looking for something... anything other than the two high points I mentioned above... to qualify it as at least a "not bad" movie. All this exercise acheived was to lead me to question my own integrity as a reviewer and, ultimately, resign that post (ironic that the same franchise that made me love movies enough to make watching them my job eventually led me to decide it wasn't something I could do anymore, isn't it?). Menace is a train wreck of a film designed to sell lots of toys to little children and nothing more (well... maybe also to insult some ethnic groups by mocking their speech patterns, but that may have been incidental). Attack of the Clones was better. I might even go so far as to say as good as Jedi. But considering I don't like Jedi much as a movie, that really isn't saying a lot. You want me to agree with you that the first two prequels were good movies, but I honestly can't. And you can nitpick my fractions all you want, but by saying part of Jedi is bad, I've basically nullified your theory that I am a fanboy supporter of the original trilogy who is naysaying the prequels based on comparitive principle. I'm just an objective and informed viewer who likes some of what Lucas has done and not all. And do you want to know a secret? I think the original Star Wars is highly overrated. It's fun and energetic and ground breaking in terms of what it did for popular acceptance of the genre. But on its own merits as a film, in terms of story, acting, direction and special effects, it pales in comparison to its own sequel. Maybe Empire was a fluke. Maybe Lucas only had one truly great movie in him (two and a half if you count American Grafitti and his involvement in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the latter of which I tend to give him less and less credit for the more I see of his later work). I'd prefer that this not be the case, but he certainly hasn't wowed me with anything he's put out in the last 24 years. I'm pulling for him with this one... but I don't think people who heap praise on him regardless of what he spits out and slaps the Star Wars label on are helping him develop as an artist. Nor are they helping me as a fan of the basic idea of Star Wars.

Paplatine would still *be* Sidious, even if he's a clone of Sidious. That's what a clone is. And he's not an Emperor until the end of ROTS. And from the picture on the card and the figure itself, he's clearly not wearing Palpatine's clothing under his Sith robes. And the card doesn't mention Sidious anywhere. Like I said, there's no definitive proof out there yet, so we'll have to wait and see.

I had a dream about 2 weeks ago that I watching the flick in the theatres. In my dream, Obi-Wan and Yoda end up dead by the end of Episode III. That means that they're already some type of physical force ghost when the original trilogy begins. Which is why they're the only 2 Jedi that disappear when they "die" - they're already dead! (And they become "traditional" blue force ghosts after that, to welcome Ani back to the light... How's that for a looney theory? Well, the dream did happen...

That is like saying that among three piles of crap, one is the least smelly and repulsive. The last 4 SW movies have sucked and so will this one. Ok, I'll shut up now...just still disappointed after watching ESB in 1980 and ROTJ (the worst of all) after that. And the first two prequels were insult added to injury. I'll leave the rest of you to convince yourselves that you like this movie until 8 months from now when you figure out that it sucked and conveniently forget that you ever said it was good. Human behavior so pathetically predictable at times. Well, George nailed with Star Wars (ep 4), so I'll always like the guy, but he is far from a talented writer.

    Great Trailer, Same Old Talkback

    by jmacq

Well, I thought the trailer was awesome. It absolutely succeeded in the goal of every movie trailer, which is of course to make the viewer want to go see the movie. I watched it with a roomful of O.C. fans who could give a shit about Star Wars, and they all thought it looked really cool.

Now on the subject of Prequel vs. OT vs. LotR vs. Matrix vs....whatever. WHO THE FUCK CARES?!? I go to the movies, if I come out entertained, the movie was successful. It doesn't have to be Oscar-winning god's gift to movie-making to do that (at least for me). The expectations for the prequels were unrealistic from the beginning. If it hadn't swept every Oscar category and been the highest grossing movie of all-time after the first week of release, -someone- would have claimed it was a failure. Don't take 'em so seriously. Go to the movies, be entertained, and enjoy your hobby if you're a SW collector and all-around fan (like me). But you know what? I really liked LotR, too. And the first Matrix movie (I'd rate the sequels as 'okay'). Heck, I even generally like 'Star Trek' though I haven't watched any of the ongoing series since TNG. I even like 'Babylon 5', 'Firefly', and 'Farscape', too, and the new 'Battlestar Galactica' is awesome. OMFG I LIKE MORE THAN ONE THING!!! God forbid people appreciate things for their own merits rather than holding them up to comparison with other series/stories that may or may not really be good comparisons anyway.

Anyway, I'm holding out hope that RotS will be very entertaining, and if he can hold up as well in the full film as he did in the trailer, I think McDiarmid's performance will be pretty darn good. But I don't think it'll be the greatest movie of all time...that doesn't mean I won't (possibly) love it any less, though.

"EPISODE III" IS GOING TO OWN! THE TRAILER KICKED ASS AND THAT'S

    by screenplaywriter

    My only problem though:

    1. Hayden Christiansen in the trailer sounded like he did in "AOTC." Dull, bored, and out of character. I mean I'm sorry but this kid can't act if somebody brought a dump truck full of money to his front porch.

Maybe it's Lucas's direction, maybe it isn't, but somehow I think like little Jake Loyld these two were the worst ideas of the prequels. I think James Franco or Ryan Phillipe could've played Anakin better. Hell, any young actor could've played Anakin better, but oh well...enough whining and griping.

The trailer ruled! That line "YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE!" Delivered by Obi-Wan was great. You really saw the defeat and anguish in his performance and the tears streaming down his face showed that what we have here is right on. Same with Natalie's scene of tragedy.

The whole fight scenes: Yoda vs. Emperor Palpatine a.k.a. Darth Sidious was great and should be action-packed! Obi-Wan vs. Grievous and the droids looked to be an impressive fight as well. The Anakin & Obi-Wan Vs. Dooku fight looked good too! And Anakin vs. Obi-Wan promises a lightsaber fight for the ages!

Also, two of the most memorable scenes of the trailer were Chewbacca and the Wookies and "The Battle of Kashykk" and Felucia and lastly Anakin owning the Separatists and him being accompanied by the clonetroopers/stormtroopers like "A NEW HOPE" just entering into the Jedi Temple and taking names like in the beginning of "ANH."

You know, the trailers for TPM and AOTC weren't that good

    by eg4190

Go on, watch them again on the DVD's you all own, despite claiming to hate the PT. With TPM in particular, basically every flaw in the movie is evident in the trailers. "Yousa people gonna die?!", the lame cartoonish Gungan/Droid battle, crappy Jake Lloyd acting ("Will I ever see you again?"). Most telling of all, the coolest shot in the entire teaser trailer -- a Naboo starfighter falling into the Trade Federation battleship --wasn't even in the movie! For AOTC, we have "So have you... grown more beatiful I mean," "Excuse me, I'm in charge of security here m'lady," that lame shot of the speeder going through the turbines during the car chase. All of the cool stuff in the AOTC trailers come from the last half hour, which I consider to contain of the best sci-fi action scenes ever put on film. By contrast, the ROTS trailer is pretty damn amazing, exactly how I imagined Palpatine taking over the Republic before the prequels came out. I remain doubtful Lucas will suddenly improve his writing or work with actors, but the trailer promises at least four or five lightsaber duels and a pretty amazing looking space battle. I don't understand how any former Star Wars fan can watch that trailer and not salivate.

    by some dude

Funny that it is labelled "Emperor" and not "Chancellor" Palpatine. I wonder why there is a distinction made. Why not just label the figure Palpatine? Why don't all the Palpatine figures have "(aka Sidious)" printed on their on their labels? You may not like the clone theory, that is fine as it is a matter of taste, much like Jar Jar or YIPPEEEE, that only Lucas can decide over and we have to accept, however only a liar will say that "Chancellor Palpatine is Sidious" has been in anyway officially confirmed.

Anyways, yeah I got reamed too by the TIVO thing too, whoever that was that got the same. Cut it right off at the last 5 seconds! There I was sitting on the edge of my seat entranced, back in "it" and then CUT! My TIVO ended it's recording! I felt like and unsatisfied lover! Anyways I digress, and am loving watching this LARGER version of the trailer on my desktop.

1st impressions are always WOW as they were before with 1&2. But yet I can't help but to feel "that thing" again. I was whisked away. And even though most of what may happen is known from this infernal internet thing, seeing some of the transformation to evil was just so sweet! I felt Obi-Wan's failure when he screamed "You were the chosen one!" Gulp! SOB! Palpatine unleashed was awesome! I wonder what that transformation will look like in the course of the movie? Will he just lower his head, raise his cowl and SHAZAM! he's Sidious? Hope there's some facial distortion fx that we get to see to supplement that.Too much to get into here. Will get a better hed to repond after I've seen it a few times. But I thnik that indeed it does what it's supposed to do... get us to anticipate this one much more satisfactorily than the others. Not one cute critter, outside of Yoda, to be seen... hopin' for the best.

    This trailer is very good.

    by one9deuce

Will the movie be good also? I think Episode 1 is very mediocre, Episode 2 is worthless, and I guess I'll find out what Episode 3 is like in a short two months. The problem with the prequels is that they don't have a through-line. Star Wars to Return of the Jedi is about the Rebels first victory against the Galactic Empire to their ultimate victory over the Galactic Empire. There is purpose to the trilogy. The Prequel Trilogy has no such arc. This trailer is interesting because of Palpatine. Since the prequel trilogy is supposed to reference Hitler's rise to power, than the trilogy should have gotten to that a lot quicker. Emporer Palpatine is in AOTC for about 5 minutes for chrisakes!

    by some dude

Emperor Palpatine is in AOTC for less than a minute. Darth Sidious, the guy who eventually become Emperor, only appears in that one scene with Dooku/Tyrannus. Every other scene of "Palpatine" features the Chancellor (AKA the clone) not Sidious/Emperor/original Palpatine.

I walked out of Phantom Menace disappointed (and still am disappointed when I see it on DVD), but walked out of Attack of the Clones extatic. I saw Attack of the Clones in the theater about 5 times. If this is even a fraction as good as Clones I'll be very happy. But please, George, not another Phantom Menace. I simply can't take it.

but expecting the worst. So far the prequels are 3-0 for kick-ass trailers and 0-2 for the movies themselves. I can't help but think history will repeat itself. Hell, maybe having low expectations this time out will be a good thing. We'll know in about two months.

    by lhombresiniestro

Anakin didnt say "Not like YOU", he said "Not like here". Anyways, i used to like Episode 2 better than Episode 1 but now i dont. Why? Because although neither are GREAT movies, the first one is more fun and its not AS flat as Episode 2. Yeah, JAr JAr is still lame... but i take ANY Jar JAr scene in Episode 1 over C-3P0's bad puns in Episode 2. Plus, nothing beats the Maul/Gui Gon/ Obi Wan fight. It REALLY is a better movie. Episode 2 feels more like a failed compromise. They're both flawed HEAVILY. Episode 2 has some cooler stuff, but Episode 1 is a better movie. Still, thats like saying its better to be stabbed in the thigh than in the balls. But I digress, I love both movies.

Damn, it bothers my how the big red guy can get me so excited for things that turn out to be crap. Anyway, I haven't seen anyone comment on "Clone Wars". Is that something that ep1 haters can get in to? (...of course you didn't mention which cartoon. Maybe you were talking about the "Droids" or "Ewoks" cartoon.)

    Reply to Talkback

  • yet. He's not an emperor until the end or near the end of ROTS. He's still Chancellor Palpatine. We haven't seen "General Kenobi" in the Prequel Trilogy because he wasn't a general until the Clone Wars. It's been said that ROTS begins with the final battle of the Clone Wars. It'll be an enormous space battle, beginning with Anakin kicking royal ass in his starfighter and ending with Anakin heroically crash landing Palpatine's frigate or what have you on Coruscant. We will get to see Anakin be "great" in this film, which leads to pride, a "sin." He'll think that he has finally earned the title Master, but, as we've seen in the trailer, the Jedi Council denies him. Which will probably begin his descent.

Thank you Orionsangels for saying "EPISODE II" wasn't worthless.

    by screenplaywriter

But I don't think "EPISODE I" was that worthless however.

    1. Padme was needed because she was Senator Palpatine's biggest opposer. She believed in Chancellor Valorum and she basically was conned into accepting Palpatine as a friend and allowing him to take the mantle as Chancellor.

    2. The Trade Federation and the droids were needed to show the transition from going from steel and metal to flesh for "AOTC."

    3. The Podracing scene was needed to show Anakin's piloting skills.

    4. Jar-Jar while a complete utterly useless tool for comic relief I guess was needed to show that with a little belief in himself he could amount himself to anything. In this case a senator for Naboo.

    5. Anakin would've never met Padme and started a small little fling with her.

    6. And Maul (while he could've been an interesting opponent for the Jedi in the future films) was needed to show how the Sith are expendable and reusable. When a Jedi dies they mourn and make a funeral pire for them and they become a ghost. When a Sith Lord dies he/she is replaced. There's no mourning, there's no exaltation or big ceremony, there's nothing. He/she is treated as a nameless assassin who'll amount to nothing.

I love that people trash the PT for it's corny dialogue, and wooden acting. Yet... looking back at the OT... you'll find some of that there as well. I also love that people automatically know how these characters are supposed to react and talk (as if they're in the real world). Why don't you skip watching sci-fi/fantasy movies and go back to watching Kramer Vs. Kramer or Driving Ms. Daisy. Go on... take some tissues while you're at it. "Boohoo... I agree with most of what you wrote, but I'm sure as hell disagreeing with Anakin's beginning being 'heaven'. A wasteland is not heaven in my opinion, but it is a typical person's lot. Which makes Anakin's story more relevant to normal folks. He was just a bright and gifted kid with good intentions, who ultimately descends down a path toward evil. I can't wait to see the choice that finally announces his turn toward the dark side.

I agree with you, because it bothers me when people rag on Hayden's performance so much. With all due respect to Mark Hamill, he wasn't exactly the coolest character in A New Hope. He whined a lot too. In comparison, Hayden has been relatively subdued. Besides, people forget that Anakin is supposed to be nineteen years-old - thus he's prone to mood swings and depression, and it justifies why he was so passionate about Padme without really knowing her for too long. Anyhow, you can probably tell that I'm in the camp that really enjoyed ATOtC. That said, this trailer makes ROTS look like it's going to blow Episode I&II away.

    Hamill

    by barrelrider

The thing is, he's not like some super-thespian method actor guy, but he ws perfect for Luke because he understood exactly what Lucas was trying to do in ANH - and believed in it. You look at his screen tests. The point about Hamill is that he could deliver some occasionally very poor dialogue while still utterly believing in what he was doing and saying. Hayden probably IS a better actor than him, and Ewan certainly is, but that doesn't mean they can perform miracles, ie making an audience believe they CARE about hackneyed plot and dialogue, while standing in an entirely green room trying to convince themselves that they are about to be executed in a huge arena. I want Ep III to be as good as it can possibly be, and yes - I will be there on opening night, as I have for the first 2 prequels.

    by right bastard

Sure, there are some corny moments in Star Wars. "...but I wanted to go to Tashi Station to pick up some power converters!" What a whiney bitch. Even worse was that scene that they cut out, wher Luke goes and says goodbye to Biggs. Samsuck showed that at ComicCon a few years ago, and I see why they cut that from the final film. Did they put that scene on the new DVD? Anyway, the inter-character dialogue in SW was much better. 3PO and R2 cleverly bicker instead of throwing around annoying puns, OB1 drops science like there's no tomorrow, and Leah goes all out with that 70's girl power. ESB had Yoda giving the Eastern Wisdom, and Han and Leah have a more realistic romance than in AOTC. I've seen no real character moments like that in the preqs, except for maybe Mr. Bo Jangles Fett and his kid. In OT you have James Earl Jones, Sir Alec Guinness, Harison Ford, Peter Cushing, Fisher, and Lando Colt 45. That's some damn strong acting talent, and Mark isn't that bad. I think he's a better voice and stage actor, but he was good for the type of bumpkin' that Luke needed to be. (Another reason to hate Menace. I thought Tatooine was supposed to be a the Nebraska of planets. How come so damn much is going on there?)

Best thing about the trailr: No clumsy Gungans!

    by oberon

Seriously: This trailer busts a move. For a moment one is able to forget any disappointments from the last two movies, and not merely because Jaw Jaw or whatever the blazes his name is is nowhere to be seen. I confess I found myself drooling when it finished. I can easily see how this will en up with a PG-13 rating, and cockades off to Lucas for not watering it down to get a PG rating. Now: Some wiseass will say: "Yeah, well, the trailer for Episode I was boss, too." And they'd be right: I *still* consider the Episode I trailer to be one of the best ever made. To which I can only respond with three arguments: 1) This is even better than the Phantom Menace Trailer; 2) As Moriarty and the Jedi Council pointed out, this is the easiest film for Lucas to get right (it's the only one we've really been waiting to see since 1980) and the early buzz is pretty positive on this; 3) the trailer actually gives us more information than the Phantom Menace trailer ever did, and all of it looks very good; and 4) No annoying 9 year olds are featured and Jar Jar's screen time will drop from 40 minutes to about as many seconds. Wait - I said three, didn't I? See, I can't even count straight with all my excitement. Call me a hopeless fool and a Lucas marketing division drive-by victim, but I'll be on line on may 19.

    by oberon

Quote: "...Who thinks George has killed the best elements of Empire for a new generation? I mean....now the "I am your father" & Yoda twists are completely redundant in Empire thanks to the "reimaginings" aka prequels." I must disagree. Let's say it's 2014 and your kids are old enough to watch the flicks on DVD or whatever the format is then. You either: a) opt to just show them the O.T. and pretend the prequels never happened or (as I would do) 2) show them the O.T. FIRST and THEN the prequel trilogy. I wouldn't show them in chronological order, to be honest. I think they're more effective in the order they were released - and largely for the reason cited here.

Ok, so I watched the "60 Minutes" segment tonight and the traile

    by screenplaywriter

    1. Palpatine a.k.a. Darth Sidious seems a bit bloated in scenes. I don't know if it's just from his transformation and his skin and body trying to become one with itself, or if it's something else, but it's kind of weird.

    2. The Wookies go Tarzan by swinging on vines onto that wheeling Trade Federation tank.

    3. There are only 6 guys as Wookies (the last one being Peter Mayhew making 7). The rest are all digitalized.

    4. Old school stormtrooper plating. If you look in the scene with Aayla Secura you'll see two of the clonetroopers wearing that same covering and armband that they wore in the scene on Tattooine.

    5. Red Royal guards are dead on the ground beside Yoda.

I don't know if anybody knew this or not, but I just wanted to point it out.

Also, on "60 Minutes" if anybody watched they showed Grievous entering onto the capital ship all hunched over and pissed off.

    by chuknowz

Yeah I saw it too screenwriter... Hope the Greivous we saw was not fully cooked yet... he looked kinda amateurish. Anyways, yes looks like he's pushin for the PG-13 rating. I hope it's partially for "well thought out violence" rather than for the sake of some angry fans who feel they need to be sated. I was also glad to see when asked if he'll change the rating, that "the Pillsbury Doughboy" stuck to his guns... Go get em' Luke! Nice scene of Yoda, that I never saw, during a preview for the broadcast... the CG Yoda looks awesome in closeups! Although I don't have an HD monitor as of yet... sigh. i agree with the "bloated" appearance of Sidious. Am hoping theres a logical reason for it, other than bad prosthetics. And I know that this might not seem too Jedi-like but, WOW! Aayla and her two luscious blue boobies! Yummy! I'm gonna try my damndest to sit front center for her scenes! Lol. Ok... I'm better now.
