Updated! REVENGE OF THE SITH final one sheet arrives!

Published at:  Mar 08, 2005 11:48:31 PM CST

Hey folks Harry here again. Got an update about the origin of the image that is the final poster for REVENGE OF THE SITH. Here's what Drew Struzan had to say:

Hello,

I'm the webmaster of the unofficial Dutch Star Wars fan website www.Sith.nl

Many people think the new Drew Struzan Revenge of the Poster has been
altered by Lucasfilm.
We contacted Mr. Struzan and asked him about this.

This is his reply:

The original design did go through the normal incarnations. The finish is
two paintings combined as I designed them. Someday the drawings and
paintings will be seen but this is the poster and the design approved by
Lucasfilm.

Hope this is interesting news to you!

Best wishes,

Erwin

So there ya go - Lucasfilm did mess with it quite a bit - which I think is what made me feel it was not balanced well. Can't wait to see Drew's original two paintings though! --- OK - here's what I wrote yesterday...

Hey folks, Harry here... Oddly - I feel this poster just misses in comparison to the other 5 Drew Struzan posters. I've heard a rumor that LFL fiddled around a bit with Drew's work and frankly... it doesn't seem to flow with the other images - mainly because the black of Vader's helmet seems to bleed into the border making it seem as though there is no border - thus breaking the stylistic look of the other 5. However, that annoying photoshop lens flare and color going up that one side... makes it feel uneven to me. That being said - the rendering of the characters through Drew's wonderful eye is as magnificent as ever... There just seems something wrong with that top half layout. Maybe it'll grow on me. No Chewie or Robot Bastard (aka Darth Grievous). I was kinda hoping for Padme on a table with legs in futuristic stirrups and Baby Selwyn winking and giggling towards us all. Sigh - well - that gives the folks at MAD something to do! And a new teaser poster for A NEW HOPE. A baby carriage with a hand out holding an ignited lightsaber. The phrase, "There's Only One Thing Wrong With The Skywalker Baby... IT'S ALIVE!" Or maybe that's been done.

Click here to check out the new poster, and to see how it fits in the now complete 6 poster set!

This poster isn't bad. As far as it's "breaking of the visual flow" I feel that it no worse then the Empire strikes back poster, which is cool, but I've felt that the purple is to bright and heavy on the lower half drawing to much emphasis to the border.

And anyone who wants to write a freaking novel just to bash the film is obviously a closet fan that thinks they're too cool to like the movies now that they're old and cynical. And of course everyone has to bring up Peter Jackson and his crappy Hobbit movies. Just admit it, fucktards, you'll be first in line to see this, just like everybody else. Central image is the Duel and a big Vader head -- as expected. I've been waiting for SITH to arrive so I can finally frame all the posters nicely and hang them in my work/study room. Looking at all 6 lined up side by side at the StarWars.com site (using Harry's link), that's a gorgeous site to behold. Any true Star Wars fan or even a fan of old style Cliffhangers like me will love having them lining a wall in sequence. Wll, in this case 2 perpendicular walls. That's a lot of framed poster art to hang!

It does look like the color composition's been fooled with a little bit, but I don't mind the Vader head in the corner at all. I'm sure it was a conscious stylistic decision, which doesn't necessarily justify it, but I can dig it. The birth of Vader is the most significant event in this trilogy anyways.

Really? Is that just because he was disappointed by it? Wow. All things considered, it's probably the worst film of the original trilogy, but HATE? It's not that bad (although it is a harbinger of Lucas' obsession with cutesy, bozo aliens that could be peddled as action figures). And, for my money anyway, it boasts the best moment of the entire trilogy when a dying Anakin picks the emperor up and throws him over that bridge-thingey. Spoiler.

    by orionsangels

Dooku? he's in the film for 5 minutes. His appearing in the film is like "Vanessa" at the beginning of the Austin Powers sequel. She's left over business from the last film, get rid of her and move on. Dooku is the samething, so why add him to the poster? The movie is about the fall of the Jedi. The poster says it all. Anakin in the middle, Vader looming above and the Jedi surrounding Anakin and of course, his love Padme near him. Papatine creepy and hiding in the bottom right, controlling his puppet in secret. Some spaceships to show battle and finally the clash in the middle, good vs evil. I think it's perfect. The rest would extra fillers. Why add Chewie?

    The problem with the poster,

    by ridge

Is, as anyone with an eye for art would say, its off center.

The helmet in the background really draws your eye to it, but the bloody thing is so far off center it makes the whole picture feel weighted to the left, with nothing on the right to counter it. Yoda and Windu counter each other in the picture, each image balancing another out from an aesthetic view. Except that freaking helmet. Put it in the center, and it's a good poster, leave it to the left? Its an eyesore. Simple things can sometimes be the things that ruin it all.

    by thing-fish

Palpatine's teeth are all crooked. Which is fine, except that his teeth weren't that crooked in ROTJ. So, what gives? Something happens in ROTS that makes his teeth crooked, but in ROTJ, they are less crooked but definitely rotten. If Palpatine, in the meantime, went to a dentist to get his teeth straightened (maybe he wore braces for a while), why didn't that dentist tell him that he should be more concerned about oral hygene? ROTJ-Palpatine should deinitely have brushed and flossed more frequently. WHy, oh why, can't Sith lord get good dentists like the rest of us? ... And did those teeth / in ancient time / walk upon England's mountains green ... Good evening and welcome ladies and gentlemen. At this time we'd like to up the tempo a little, change the mood. We've got a number requested by Pip, Pauline, Nigel, Tarquin, and old Spotty - Tarquin's mother - a little number specially written for the pubescence of ex-King Zog of Albania, and it's entitled 'Art Gallery'. It blows my mind that we nitpick on such trivial things like a poster. If this were the 1980's people would be gaga over this piece of Star Wars info. However today with the same intentions to present this to us in "awe", it's now nitpicked because of our bitter expectations we still hold as older individuals who grew up on these films. Eyesore? Ridge, hun, it's a poster for a science fiction space fantasy... not a poster for a serious posh art film enjoyed by yuppies over sipped martinis. :/ The only eyesore I saw noticed was taking these silly Talkbackers one step further into ridiculous nitpicking by discussing the "asthetic view" of a one-sheet poster of a fun traditional popcorn flick?! My generation who grew up on these films such as I really need to get a grip... the whole angsty trite "my childhood was raped" attitude was so 1999. ^.~

    by big dumb ape

...looking at the StarWars site, where you can see all 6 lined up in a row, is that since we get a prominent big Vader head on the EMPIRE poster, I think it would have been cool to have a large mechanical General Greivous here with all four mechanical arms out and holding lit lightsabers to frame the lower portion below, which is perfect. I realize Lucas and Fox want to push the whole "birth of Vader" angle for SITH and work him into essentially every piece of marketing material they can, but overall since the prequels are their own time and world, I think having a big-ass Greivous would have rocked to play him up as this movie's villain. Then with all 6 put together, you've really got a bit of everyone and a taste of everything...

I mean it sort of makes sense that for his final "artsy" cut that he'd use the "artsy" design on THOSE dvds.

I love the poster, but after reading what you said, I could see it being a tad cooler had the background been a centered, large, overshadowing, robotic General with his 4 mechanical arms holding lightsabers that shoot off the 2 sides of the poster. That would have been pretty fucking cool looking, too. And you're right -- looking at them all sequentially, we still do get a big Vader head later. Judging by this new poster the Wars has been put back into Star Wars. Hell, from what I've seen on the net so far The Duel is gonna be worth the price of omission alone. TWO posters tacked together - Drew says so.

    by mister mcclane

Apparently Lucasfilm has created this poster from TWO posters Drew came up with. He has reportedly admitted this. It looks suspiciously like the Darth image in the background is from another poster, especially as the tones in the front images are lighter than the back. It doesn't look very professional to me, it LOOKS stuck together. Poor work on LFL's behalf I'd say. A simple thing to correct too. Otherwise, I like the overall image, although some huge Clone Wars space battle up top would've been great.

Vader's helmet has to be off to one side, otherwise, you've got Vader's mouth spitting out Anakin's head. I think they were referencing the original '77 one sheet key art with Vader's helmet offset and a pyramidal composition peaking inside the Vader silhouette. The '77 art works better compositionally because we're seeing full figures of Luke and Leia. There's far more drama and compostional integrity in that pose of the Luke And Leia characters than any (no matter how beautifully rendered) portrait(s) can muster. Since modern Hollywood key art is obsessed with showing big faces, the key artist (in this case, Drew) is stuck with compositions that must reconcile the clunkiness of these three big heads.

As far as the guy supposedly not being artistic? I never said that at all. I said the helmet being off to the left draws your eyes to the left of the poster, directly to it. Now, if it were in the center, over everything, it would give a menacing 'overlord' kind of feel to it.
It's very basic principles taught in art, myself being a student of art, and anyone else who's every studied art, knows that for a good picture, you at least try to have balance in it. It doesnt have to be an alternate image across from it, it can be tones, colours etc. It's a very nice poster, well done, but I believe it looks a little off kilter. And if you can't accept that I think that without posting flames and insults, thats your problem, after all its my opinion and nobodies changing it no matter how many assinine and childish insults are thrown my way.

This movie, without a doubt, will be the movie event of the last... well... since cinema began really.

Its a movie series that has taken what, near 30 years to finish? 28 or so I think actually...

Anyone who saw episode 4 5 and 6 when they were growing up, or saw episode 1 and 2, then the others.... essentially ANYONE whos seen starwars, will line up to see this movie. Its a sure fire hit, in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the box office for this movie catapulted it into the single most succesful debut weekend or whatnot.

Its episode 3, its the final part of a hexology, I think thats the word, that I've been a fan of my whole life. And I know, like anyone whos seen the other 5... it's gonna be pretty emotional to sit there after episode 3 and think 'Wow... thats it... thats all the starwars movies... no more?'

    Attack of the Wookies

    by captain omega

I'd like to have seen a Wookie on there, or Grievous. But at least there's no Jar Jar, or some other dorky , too-out-there, kind of creature. For example, I don't like the Jedi Counsel guy who had the long neck and tiny head. Don't like the one that's a snake, with the beard, or whatever it is either.

Now, will there be a musical number in Episode III?

Did they ADD Vader to a Vader-less poster?

    by drath

It looks great, except for where the Vader mask touches Anakin, Padme, and Obi Wan's heads. Did they shrink the action portion of the poster and digitally paste on Vader's mask in the background? On my computer screen it doesn't look too good, so I hope they'll clean it up a little for printing. Or maybe it'll look better printed anyway. Otherwise I like it fine. I agree with the suspicions that Lucas is saving the Struzan posters for the HD DVD format release and that's why we get crappy photoshopped DVD covers. I just wish the Special Edition posters had more characters on each one. ANH only has the good guys, ESB only has the bad guys, and RotJ only has the aliens. I get what he's going for, but I don't like it. I prefer they were more like the original trilogy posters (and prequel trilogy posters) which try to capture the epic nature of each film by including most of the relevant players of each episode be they good, evil, or alien. Okay, so Dooku got screwed, but still...I had to bitch about SOMETHING.

I have to agree about the Vader thing.

    by i dunno

Let me just say that I like the prequels and I think Episode III has the potential to be the best in the entire saga (both trilogies) the ONLY concern (well concern is too strong a word) is that they're pushing Vader too much when he's only going to show up at the end (not a spoiler, Lucas said it in many interviews). It doesn't bother me, in fact if I had a choice between seeing suited up Vader fight and the human behind the mask fight, I'd choose the latter but some non fans or casual fans might be disappointed by his lack of screen time. Like I said i don't care, I just don't want to hear critics whining that they were misled by the marketing.

... mt only gripe is why does Yoda have to be in attack position? I knwo we wanted to see him kick ass as we did in Ep II but Yoda is a spritual and wise character, not neccessarily a warrior (maybe more so in his younger days), I would have liked to see him more in a thoughtful pose with a look of despair on his face. Obi-wan looks good (Ewan has really made Obi-wan his own, an impressive feat considering the shoes hes filling). Other than that, why exactly did Lucas give Anakin hair like a greasy stoner?

The way that Sam Jackson's character is situated in relation to Obi Wan makes it look like Obi Wan's hand is lifted with his middle finger extended. But when I think of Yoda I think of the reverent, wise, and even somewhat physically fragile character. The poster portrays him as an action hero. Krikkit: His hair is like that because Lucas is attmepting to gradually close the stylistic gap between the prequels and the OT. Hence, he's given Anakin a bit of a 70s hairstyle so this movie naturally leads into Ep IV, which was of course made in the 70s. We're also seeing some kind of prototype Tie-fighters on this poster - cool! Nards - Great post dude; Karza and Furious - you both cracked me up! Funny shit, keep it coming! by silver_joo

Ever thought that maybe Yoda was a concientious objector by the end? He detached himself from the cause of the Rebellion, and only a more philosophical belief in the healing power of the Force, and it's desire to balance itself out keep hims going in Dagobah. Perhaps watching what it did to Anakin's mind made him feel that the Force was far more powerful if wielded with the mind, than in its physical expression.

Right Bastard, do you know who did the artwork for all the Original Trilogy posters? Or what site might have that information? This poster is very mediocre. A bunch of floating heads like every other poster out there. Oh well, I'm not really expecting anything out of the movie anyway. Also, Yoda fighting in AOTC is the most ridiculous thing in the entire saga. If Lucas had made him athletic in Episode 1 and Episode 2, I could see him fighting (but not that pinball bullshit), and then ***SPOILERALERT*** after his confrontation with The Emperor in ROTS he is broken and hobbled, that at least would have worked for the entire saga. Not that it matters anyway, I look at the Prequel Trilogy like I do Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, Terminator 3, Superman 3 and 4...you get the idea.

    by childe roland

...about the prequels so far, Yoda's fight scene in AOTC isn't one of them. Something about seeing that little green monkey run up Dooku's arm and fuck his ear with a green lightsaber made me think of Richard Pryor's old Sunset Strip stand-up, and that's always a good thing. I think showing the little booger in action here is totally appropriate and I hope we get to see more of it in Sith. I also hope he gets good and fucked up by Sidious in their fight so as to explain why every move Yoda makes in Empire (a mere twenty-odd years later by Star Wars time) appears to cause him excruciating pain. As someone pointed out above, if he's long-lived enough to be in his fighting prime at 880, he better have some serious injuries to explain the mess he is at 900 and why he'd just be ready to lay down and die at 905.

    by screenplaywriter

The only reason why I'm going to watch the crappy, teen soap-operish melodrama known as "THE O.C." is to see "STAR WARS."

Sure, there's hot chicks on "THE O.C." but there's hot chicks on other programs too.

I'm still not sold on how the Emperor looks, but I love the poster all in general. It screams "epic" and it brings the blending of prequel and original trilogy together.

However, if I would've made the poster I would've incorporated stuff from the "EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: SPECIAL EDITION" one sheet. Have Vader up high, the Emperor on the right side, those new Jedi Starfighters, and than Grievous on the left. Followed by Dooku, Mace, Chewie, Obi-Wan, the droids, Yoda, and a pregnant Padme at the bottom. It would've been cool, but still a very, very, VERY nice touch from Lucasfilm.

I've read the whole movie on the Internet. It's not pretty. This is a long way from TPM and I think many of you prequel naysayers will be happy. I undrstand your complaints about the other films, but ROTS is violent. No JarJar, no kiddie crap here, more like disturbing.

They chop off limps like it's going out of style. It's very mean and serious this movie. It's going to scare children, remember it's the last SW film, Lucas has nothing to lose by alianating them. I'm very surprised by what happens in this movie, for a SW film. It's probably going to be PG13.

As for the acting, well I can't judge all the acting, but from the soundbytes I've heard it sounds like the best acted of the three. It's very dramatic and emotional, especially Ewan and Padme cries, when Natalie cries in a movie, they should give her an automatic Oscar. She's incredible at it.

I think a little projection is going on. We're not pissed that you like it. On the other hand, you seem to be pissed that we don't like it. I haven't seen anyone detract from the New Trilogy post anything venomously angry. The reaction to our posts, on the other hand... Yes, I will admit if this movie is not as bad as I fear, but that still won't take from Menace being crap and Clones being mediocre. The only way Lucas will "own me" will be if he released the untainted 70's Trilogy without all the special edition husafudge. Those editions are "special" in the same way that the Special Olympics are.

Yeah the copy and paste thing is a problem. I can't imagine they would let it go out like that. For those who don't see it, the image of Anakin was painted with a lighter background originally and there is a shade of reddish brown that comes through the "aura area" or the hair frizz area. When they put in Vader, it made the background dark causing the area around Anakin to look to bright and like a cut out. I'm sure Drew isn't happy and it could easily be fixed in Photoshop so I can only assume it will be. Other than that it looks fine to me.

What with Blu-Ray, HD-DVD coming holding 100gigs. I'm sure Lucas will release the ultimate saga edition and on the Disc Menu they'll be an area called, "The Vault". When you click their the menu has that old school SW 70s look. you can look at pictures, deleted scenes and watch the OT there.

  • Because George Lucas has disowned his original movie he said and I will try and quote him as near virbatim as I can recall.. "The original film doesn't fit my vision, the Special Editions are closer to the movie I wanted to make but couldn't due to restrictions on technology and budget at the time".. he has also been noted as saying that (and again, this is as near virbatim as I can recall at this point) "Why should I have to compromise my vision just because a handful of internet nerds desire to buy the original versions on DVD? I am an artist and have the right to do whatever I want to my creations.".. sounds like he was a shit of a child.. insolent little prick.. then has the nerve to say he does it for the fans.. having said that though.. I have to admit, the only people I've heard bitching about how there's no Classic OT on DVD have all been at his website

I think the poster looks great... right up there with the rest of them... though I'm partial to the OT posters just b/c they were so cool when I was a kid seeing them for the first time. TESB poster (blue, images of Hoth, etc.) was the best. I'm almost 35 now, have a good job, am married with kids, love sports, etc. and still to this day I get giddy about Star Wars. I don't collect merchandise, don't go to conventions, don't play with the toys. But I love the movies and take some of the bad dialogue in stride. Me... I can't wait for May 19th.

    by numberface

I thought he was so in control of The Force he didn't have to bust sick moves to prove how badass he is. He looks like the karate kid or something. The fightin' Yoda is the studipest thing I've ever seen in Star Wars. Yoda should be cool and detached like Neo was in the Matrix, not all wavin' his arms and his light saber like a freakin' two-foot tall Buccaneer. This is going to be such a disapointment. Yes, I'm basing that opinion on my impression of Yoda on the poster. Sue me. (Watch, Lucas probably will)

Is it not possible that this opinion uttered by Yoda comes from character evolution? Perhaps after seeing the failings of battle, Yoda learns that greatness that comes to some in battle is truly over shadowed by the pain that was administered.

Yoda becomes the great Zen voice of the trilogy, but opinions that do not come from a learned experience are shallow and self serving. Maybe, just maybe, George can pull off something that shows Yoda learning that he no longer attacks with a sword, but instead he attacks with his soul.

    "What with Blu-Ray, HD-DVD coming holding 100gigs."

Keep dreaming. The industry that develops these digital media technologies will ALWAYS engineer them in a way that you can still only fit 3 hours of material onto a single disk. If there is one day an optical disk that holds a fucking Terabyte, they'll have the video standard set at some new retarded mpeg standard that's like 1Gb\s just to make sure that the disks still only hold 3-4 hours max playback time. Lucas is NEVER going to put the whole library on one disc, and neither is anyone else. Even though the they will be capable of holding an entire season of TV on a single disk, they won't, you'll still get 10 fucking blue-ray disks holding a single season of Star Trek or whatever, and it will still cost $130. The new generation of optical media is pointless, and frankly should go fuck itself for another 5 years until the entertainment industry actually needs it. Ever wonder why DIVX never became an industry standard?

    by solowcx

People just called MPEG4 movies DivX as a joke relating to the failed format. They are not the same at all, as true DIVX was basically just a DVD that dialed in to a server and charged per play.

SmackFu I agree with you in part..

    by maulrat

As it is... Blank DVD's using an MPG2 format can be manipulated to hold 5-7 hours of film on a disc, I make family movies of my little nephew, niece and my daughter for my brother in law who's in another country using DVD's without any picture or sound loss, but you find commercial DVD's have a limit of about 3 hours.. but there shouldn't really be any reason why it couldn't happen with HDDVD type media especially if HDDVD player will be backwards compatible with DVD video discs.. but you're right, commercially, the format will be tweaked to the shithouse to make it only fit so much on a disc.. this much is true. When the next gen burners come out which record Blu-Ray or HDDVD format, it will be a piraters wet dream, fitting 10-12 DVD's on the one disc ???. The computer industry is about to fuck the movie industry more than it did with the birth of the internet...
