Cool News
Everything is satisfactual! SONG OF THE SOUTH finally coming to DVD!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some good news. I've always been upset that Disney has chosen to ignore this gem as an actual movie while still pulling in all the bank from selling the song Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah. As long as the Mouse House still makes a buck, who cares, right?
Well, it looks like I'll have to look at Disney in a newer light now that they've realized Uncle Remus' stories were not told because he was forced under a whip to tell them and his relationship with the children is not that of a master/slave relationship... So, unless they're using this as a spring board for SONG OF DA SOUTH II: DA RAPPA CHRONICLES starring Ice Cube as Unca Remus, Queen Latifah in the Hattie McDaniel role and Coolio as the voice of the Br'er Rabbit (which I wouldn't put past Eisner), then it looks like Disney is doing the right thing again.
CLICK IT HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE '06 RELEASE OF THIS CLASSIC, THANKS TO JIM HILL MEDIA!!!

I remember seeing this is the theater when I was a young-un. I didn't know, nor did I care, what a "tar baby" really was. I wonder how I'll look at it when it comes out...but I am sooooo there!

Disney wasn't afraid to be revisionist with Fantasia. Directed by Walt Disney himself no less.

I can't wait to hear what the NAACP and the rest of the PC censor nuts have to say about this news.

I have seen this movie recently (on laserdisc) and I disagree with the assertion in the Jim Hill Media article that it is boring. It's actually a very involving and well made movie. Of course the beautifully designed and executed animation is the reason to see it, but I also found myself understanding why people who can delude themselves into thinking that it's completely inoffensive are so attached to the movie. That's the thing though. I think Disney should by all means release it in one of their collector's tins with documentaries to put it into historical context. But if they really are planning on marketing it to children and supplementing it with ludicrous tie-ins to modern pop culture (celebrity African-American host, etc.) as claimed in the article, then they are insane. Yes, the movie takes place during reconstruction, and Uncle Remus is not supposed to be a slave. But that almost makes it worse. Watching the movie, it really seems like Uncle Remus loved his slavemasters so much that he stuck around after he was freed so he could tell stories to their little blouse-wearing moppet. It is always surprising to me when I talk to someone who has seen this movie and doesn't understand what the problem is.

I can already see the "Boycott Disney Products" signs. They could have had the sense to what until "Black History Month" was over before releaseing this bit of good news. Trust me this will be a "tar baby"

I never understood why it was such a big deal that this movie was suddenly "unenlightened", "embarrassing" and a potential PR nightmare.
WHAT ?
Until very recently, SOTS was available on PAL VHS. You could pick it up in any video stockist in the UK on the Disney Classics label. If you didn't want to buy it, no problem - it's one of the Disney movies that the BBC shown on public holidays - uncut - with no public reaction at all. But then, I guess that the UK networks probably wouldn't have thrown a multi million dollar shit-fit at a quick peek of Janet Jackson's breast either. (I mean, get a grip people...they're breasts. A couple of pounds of flesh with a nipple on the end and half of the world's population have them. They're really not that big a deal !!)
Anyhoo - there go my bragging rights to being one of a handful of talkbackers with an honest to gosh official copy of the movie. -

James Earl Jones. he's got Disney history, and lends credence and gravity to the story. You'd listen to him read Red Hot Chili Pepper lyrics.

The real reason they're finally releasing it is that they've had rides themed after the film in both US parks for more than 10 years now. Splash Mountain is one of the more popular rides at both Disneyland and Disney World and they've been on a kick lately trying to create movie tie ins to rides that didn't already have them (Pirates of the Carribean, Haunted Mansion) so this makes sense.

I already have it on DVD. It is a transfer from the U.S. laser disc that Disney released eons ago. Complete with trailers from a couple of its re-releases (last one being in '86) as well as some radio interviews from when it first was released. That's also how I got the original versions of the original Star Wars trilogy -- widescreen laser disc transferred to DVD. No Greedo shooting first or at all for that matter. :)

An earlier posted made an incorrect statement that the NAACP had boycotted the release of SOTS. This is an urban legend that has circulated for years. The NAACP has never issued any boycott of this movie. I persoanlly liked SOTS when I was a kid. Im not sure how I will take to it today. We'll see. I'm glad its being released on DVD, although I hope Disney doesn't edit it, like they did in the opening song of Aladdin to make in non-offesnive.

OK, folks.....saw this when rereleased in the late 60s - I was about seven. I absolutely LOVED it as a kid. At no time did I even think about any racial issues, or consider the black characters to be demeaned in any way. OK, it has been over 30 years, and I'm anxious to see it again. My most disturbing memory was how the young poor white girl was treated so horribly by her white trash brothers. Check out http://www.songofthesouth.net/movie/overview/index.html for a decent critique. Anyway, I'll really start a maelstrom in here......as a former Southerner, I spent a hell of a lot of time studying the history of racial conflict, the Civil War, Reconstruction, etc. Whether historical revisionists want to accept it or not, a large percentage of former slaves chose to remain on the plantations as freed individuals, due to loyalty to humane plantation owners, and a legitinate lack of support from the government to start new lives. Not every situation was a chapter from "Roots." Some of the worst abuse came from lower class whites who felt threatened by the newly freed black working class, or Northern opportunists with little interest in racial equality. OF COURSE, abuse and discrimination existed at all levels, but to imply that no former slaves were content to co-exist with plantation owners is blatantly false. Story-telling is also a valued Southern tradition, among both the white and black population. Anyway, I won't dwell any further, but will be happy to discuss it further. I'm not talking civil rights of the 1900s, but the reality of a changing culture in the 1800s.

Singing by the slaves prior to Emancipation, and among the freed blacks during Reconstruction was indeed quite common - especially in the fields. It doesn't imply a lack of individuality or strength, but an inner peace and drive that no amount of hardship could diminish. I have no memory how such scenes are portrayed in the film, but your statement was somewhat snide and simplistic. I don't mind an honest critique of the film's technique, and any flawed historical attributes or racial inaccuracies, but I can see this discussion is already delving into media fed misconceptions and mindless PC bullshit.

Film isn't my only love, as I also fit in a degree in American History, with an emphasis on Civil War & Reconstruction. Nine years ago, I had the pleasure of joining my nephew on his ten-day journey to document a dissertation on Reconstruction, and the New South. That time in LA (Louisiana, that is) and Miss. was quite fascinating. An abundance of plantations surround St. Francisville, and we were able to interview many great-great-grandchildren of original slaves in the area. Ironically, many still live on parcels of land from the original plantation. Of course, the original mansions are either being restored by "New Money," falling into neglect or simply gone. The stories were varied and fascinating. The initial KKK formations that sprouted in the woefully "reconstructed" South haunted the area for a period, but died until its later revival in the the early 1900s (partially spurned on by "Birth of a Nation"). What surfaced during these interviews, more than anything else, was a love of the land, a strong faith and a desire for racial peace. Many interviewees displayed artifacts/photographs indicating a strong bond between the former "owners,

In fact, do a search on Amazon and you'll find that there are several collections available. I'm friends with one of Hal Roach's grandsons and he's admitted that the family member in charge of the films hasn't had much drive to get a decent collection out. (I've volunteered to oversee it myself for a modest sum...)

Site design aside, Harry, you need to figure out a way to get the quality of feedback to improve. I suggest a sister "pay" site.....weed out the screeching tweeners and jerk-offs.
-
For the simple reason that, if you preserved the Uncle Remus character as is, except made him white, nobody would blink. He's just another grandfatherly male in a long, long line of grandfatherly males from the Disney tradition. Also, it's not actively malicious...unlike, say, "Birth of a Nation." It's not a sincere integrationist effort either; it's just trying to be a kids movie. Disney means well, it's just that times have changed. The "load it with supplements" idea is a good one but they're going about it the wrong way; a "See! We make money off of black people more constructively now!" featurette isn't going to do much.
On the other hand, a serious look at the career of the first black man to take home an Oscar would be an excellent idea. If they do the full on, two-disc Platinum/Masterpiece/Whatever Collection treatment, it could be a primo disc.
