Baz & Leo's ALEXANDER THE GREAT Movie Still Happening!

Published at:  Feb 22, 2005 7:31:34 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... While Oliver Stone's ALEXANDER didn't do particularly well in the United States... it's International Box Office was quite strong - and it seems that Dino and Baz took it that a "better film" would do better in the United States and even better overseas. And well, I've always wanted to see what Baz would do with the story. In fact when it seemed that Oliver had "won the race" I was quite upset - as this was the film which was to begin Baz's next stage in his career. And that fascinated me. Here ya go...

From SCREEN INTERNATIONAL;

Dino De Laurentiis has announced that he is pressing ahead with plans to shoot his Alexander the Great project, which is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman and will be directed by Baz Luhrmann.

"We will shoot the film in one year's time, and it will be the Alexander that everyone has been waiting for," De Laurentiis told Italian daily Il Corriere della Sera, confirming the talent that was attached to the project when it was announced in 2003.

De Laurentiis's film, which was originally due to shoot in Morocco last April, was put on hold when Oliver Stone's rival Alexander project got underway in 2004. "I don't want to hit out against Oliver Stone, who merits respect. But his picture was certainly flawed, and was missing the spine of a screenplay," the Italian producer told the Milan newspaper.

He added: "Epic films are difficult to do well. King Arthur was also flawed. It badly copied ideas from the third film in my schedule, which is based on Valerio Massimo Manfredi's novel, The Last Legion."

The Last Legion is set during the fall of the Roman empire and tells the true story of a group of legionaries who go to Britain to save the young emperor of Rome who has been kidnapped by barbarians. The film will be shot in English. A director has not yet been named, although De Laurentiis said that Carlo Carlei is no longer attached to the project.

Meanwhile, De Laurentiis is currently preparing Decameron, an English-language movie based on Boccaccio's classic 14th century collection of stories. Written and directed by David Leland, the $38m romantic drama focuses on two young lovers fleeing from the plague that swept across Europe in 1348.

The movie will start shooting in Italy in April with Hayden Christensen. Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli heads the production's costume department. "You won't be seeing any leotards," De Laurentiis warned. "The costumes and sketches I've seen are wonderful, and are adapted to young people on the road today." The production's art department is headed up by Jim Clay.

De Laurentiis's upcoming slate also includes The Lecter Variation, which follows Hannibal Lecter from his childhood in Lithuania through a period in Paris to his arrival in the US. The film will feature Lecter at the ages of 8, 14 and 20. De Laurentiis confirmed that the film will be directed by Peter Webber, and the cast will include Gong Li.

I can't say if I will want another Alexander movie until I see that first. It's kind of good to know that Leo Dicaprio may still play the part, as he's much more suited to it than Colin Farrell...that is assuming he can make a convincing warrior. I guess if Orlando Bloom can make a convincing fighter, so can Leo. I just hope it's not an "emotiveless mess" to use Gore Vidal's word describing early versions of Ben Hur.

However, the Lecter movie as a young man could be interesting. Wonder if we see him reading Cannibalism for Dummies.

    Good news.

I think it can only be healthy that films dealing with history are numerous, as that is what makes the discipline so interesting - the number of different ways in which we can attack the same subject.

I really liked Stone's Alexander, but I'd love to see a more clinical and heroic take on his story that showed him to actually be a great tactician in the battlefield. Although, I feel that Stone really nailed the genius of Alexander and the fact that he was so far ahead of his time's way of thinking.

    The Lecter film will suck

    by monkey butler

We've already heard about Lecter's childhood in the novel of Hannibal, and the power of that story (what little there was - by the time Harris was finished with the story even he must've seen that it was just an arrogant, show-off wank) was removed from the film. How can you go back and include Mischa and Lecter's obsession with her rebirth when it was never included at all in the films? At best this will just come off as a Talented Mr. Ripley rip-off.

Oliver Stone was such an arrogant prick during the press for Alexander, it'll be good for him to be shown proper filmmaking technique.

I was really sad to see this production go down just because Stone didn't have scheduling setbacks. Better yet, Baz can learn from Stone's mistakes. It all works out in the end.

Unfortunately, with Stone's Alexander the not-so-Great-box-office out of the blocks first, I still feel that will kill this movie deader than a possum run over 527 times on the highway. You might as will build a small bonfire of $100 bills and set it on fire.

    Dino is a villain!

    by giant fish

He has produced a few good movies, but most of his work are the worst remakes and sequels in history... The 70s King Kong and Flash Gordon, anyone? Hannibal and Red Dragon weren't the best movies in the world, either. And his input certainly didn't help Army of Darkness at all... "Henry the Red, he come in here, so you get one big battle..." sucking the excitement out of the battle, since Ash was obviously winning for most of it. Oh, well. Let's see Bruce Campbell as Filip the 2nd in this one!

    by fluffyunbound

BTW I have no reason to believe that Baz understands Alexander any better than Stone did. Speaking of Gore Vidal, the best thing that could happen would be for Vidal to walk up to Baz at some Eurotrash function and say, "Forget Alexander; I've got a script in my pocket based on my novella 'Julian' that you should look at."
