Schrader's EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING To Screen In Brussels!

Published at:  Feb 21, 2005 7:21:25 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with some hopeful news regarding Paul Schrader and his film, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING. Now - the shitball film directed by Renny "TB-hack hack hack" Harlin was shoved down our throats domestically... despite the fact it had terrible character work, mediocre story technique... but a few moments of scares. Evidently Schrader's version was shelved due to it being a quality film without a ton of cheap jump scares. Cuz god forbid a director make a real movie. I mean, Billy Friedkin's original was such a scare-fest from beginning to end. That Schrader's film is being screened at Brussels Fantastic Film Festival means a couple of things. One: There's a film print that can be screened. This is extremely good news. Two: It can be seen. Originally we were told we'd be getting this film on DVD joined at the broken hip of Harlin's. Perhaps if word is solid on Schrader's version... we can do better than that!

Hey Harry,

Deep Red here. According to the BBC, looks like some lucky people will finally be able to see the real Exorcist IV:

This is indeed Good News

Hope we all get a chance to see it! So long as our legs don't go broke on us... ;-)

I never saw this cos I hadn't seen the original...

    by monkey butler

Which I hadn't seen because I didn't know whether to see the original or the re-release. I heard the re-release is better, but with a different (shit?) ending. Which should I see?

    Who. Cares.

Apparently, in Pyongyang, you can catch a cut of Jersey Girl without Bennifer in it, and a version of Catwoman directed by Orson Welles in Antartica... and in a parallel dimension versions of the Star Wars prequels that are at least mildly watchable.

But now for the real surprise from Moron Creek:

    by salvatoregravano

"Morgan Creek is proud to present a hip, updated remade version of William Friedkin's classic horror, THE EXORCIST. The new version, starring Dakota Fanning and Casper van Diem, will be directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and is set to premiere on Halloween 2005".

I've seen Schrader's piece of shit

    by xlmonster

and if you thought Harlin's hack job was bad -- get ready for something even more boring and ridiculous. If you think the devil as a bald boy in a diaper is scary -- then this is the movie for you. This is what happens when you give horror movies to guys who know nothing about them. Reminded me of that crap Mike Nichols werewolf movie.

It's a great vehicle for the evolving sensibility of Renny Harling. Schrader's version sucks cock in hell, you faithless slime.

    Response To Monkey Butler

    by spamgelus

I couldn't tell you anything about the Schrader version, but if you haven't seen Harlin's... DON'T. Unless you're having a "Bad Movie Party." Then it should be the "Feature Presentation." Unless, of course, you're also showing Exorcist II: The Heretic, in which case you'll have to flip a coin.

    Monkey Butler...

    by lazarus long

This is only one man's opinion, but I would probably see the original version first. While the added scenes in the "Version You've Never Seen" certainly enhanced the film, the ending had a bit of humor that was just inappropriate. The conclusion of the original, however, is sad and creepy, and a much better fit. So in short, watch the original, then the new version.

    Clarification to above posts

    by lazarus long

Also, I'm referring to the 1973 William Friedkin film, which is what I think Monkey Butler was talking about. The guy who posted above me is referring to Exorcist: The Beginning from last year. Hope one of us answered your question.

    Exorcist II

    by splbrg75

Hey, I liked the second Exorcist picture. John Boorman decided to do something totally different from Friedkin's CSI-ish approach. Also, it's one of Morricone's best scores!

    Exorcist III, man!

    by lazarus long

While Exorcist II: The Heretic may not be the cinematic abortion that many claim, the real underrated is Part III aka "Legion". William Peter Blatty, writer of the original novel, wrote and directed this one, and it's a lot cooler in terms of the "mythology" than the second one, featuring a return of sorts of Jason Miller's Father Karras. Plus you have an over-the-top George C. Scott taking over for Lee J. Cobb as Lieutenant Kinderman (guess they had to find another 3-syllable, middle initial actor), Brad Dourif!. Scott Wilson, and Nicol Williamson (Merlin from Excalibur). I can't think of a better horror movie cast. It's far from perfect but it definitely delivers in bizarre fashion.

    LEGION

    by ewokstew

Have to agree with Lazarus. number III in the series was pretty scary for the most part. The only thing I hated about it were the scenes with an over the top Brad Dourif and the stupid "descent into Hell" scenes in the prison cell.
If they could have cut that crap I feel this would have been a first rate scare fest on par with some of the best psychological terror films out there.
