Something Happened On CARNIVALE Sunday Night''

Published at:  Feb 20, 2005 11:21:35 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

I thought things stopped happening on “Carvnivale” last season. Anyway, isn't everybody watching that bland nonsense about middle-aged hausfraus at 9 p.m.?

I was busy watching the "SNL" thing, but the “L Word” premiere talkback is filling up with some kind of buzz, so here’s another talkback.

Talkbackers! Do I have to watch all those other season-two episodes to figure out what happened tonight?

    by monkeybrains

I only finished wathing the first season because there was nothing else on at the time, (I can watch it at 6pm, getting the east coast feed over here on the west coast)and was hoping that something would happen.(Which never did) This season has been mucho fulfilling. If you havent watched it up till know, it may be confusing, but I scudder, I mean shudder at the revelations to come

This was completely unexpected tonight (at least for me, I don't watch previews for the next week). This is season finale material. Can't wait to see how this works out over the next few episodes.

    by cknightshift

It's 15 minutes shorter than a full hour's episode. But more happens in the last 5 minutes of this one episode than some TV series have during an entire season. LOTS of mysteries revealed in this one!

    Herc, about this season

    by cknightshift

Yah buddy ya might want to do some looking and catch up 'cuz it's been WAY more dense/cerebral than last year. If season 1 was putting the pieces on the board then season 2 has been watching what those pieces finally *do*... and it's been a hella lot. Last week the "burned orphanage" plot was VERY evil-ly wrapped up (maybe) and Ben found his grandmother, Scudder's mother (we also learn that Ben's grandfather helped Nathan Bedford Forrest found the Ku Klux Klan). Justin is turning into quite the Father Coughlin figure but in a very Jim Jones/Randall Flagg sorta way. Definitely worth looking into amigo :-)

so I know that Brother Justin and his now revealed father Mr. Belyakov are the tree tattooed prophets, but i'm still not absolutely sure on who's good and who's evil, ofcourse it's leaning towards ben being good, but did anyone else notice how evil it was suffocating that whole town? anybody have any absolute clarity on who's good or evil?

So, does that mean that Sophie is Iris and Justin's half sister?

P.S. Kudos to HBO to having a chick take it up the ass. Now THAT'S groundbreaking.

    Sophie, Bialiakoff, and more...

    by homergator

Ok, first off, I admit I have been a little confused on what exactly the "usher's" role is in all of this. The tatooed man was the previous usher for Justin and Bialiakoff. Therefore, Bialiakoff is NOT Sophie's father. The usher was. Second, you can bet your ass Sohpie will return. Ben had visions of kissing her at ground zero. They are CONNECTED. As for good and evil, that's one of those things the show leaves up, for now. We still don't know which of the previous two battlers (scudder and bialiakoff) was the child of darkness and the child of light. Could be an interesting revelation. Lastly, if anyone can explain the function of the ushers, and why there isn't an usher this season, or if Justin is the usher, or if the usher is both the child of darkness AND the usher, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, what is everyone's take on the last shot of the episode. Management grabs Ben, after appearing seemingly dead when lights in carnival go out, and when he grabs him, the lights come back on. Is management dead? Was it one last bit of life to breath a little of management's soul/power into the carnivale to stay there forever. Such an aburpt ending. I don't mind a short episode...but, wow, give us an epilogue or SOMETHING...hehehe

I think Ben killed the creature of light

    by whedon

Wow what a great episode depite it ending 15 minutes early, a lot of shit happened. I think Scudder set this whole thing up going by Samson's season opening monologues. Something to the effect of the dark one trying to escape his destiny. For some reason he needed Ben to kill Managment for him, the reason why I can't figure. He's got powers too and one would assume he knows how to use them, why the hell is he asking his son to protect him? I think we're going to get a big reveal next week.

    Only so many russians

    by ansai

The connection between management and Justin was expected considering the russian backgrounds - nice to get it out of the way though.

I saw an interesting comment on a BBD somewhere saying that the Ben/Sophie thing mirrored the Justin/Iris thing - what with both being brother/sister and both seemingly unable to have ... relations with anyone outside the family without driving them insane.

As to who's good/bad - I understand the compulsion being that this is George Bush's Black/White america but I'm beginning to believe that they are simply opposites, with both being different shades of gray.

    season 1 vs season 2

    by fantomex

The good: season 2 actually makes sense. You could, if asked, actually explain to another human being what the hell is going on. The bad: it is starting to drag. We've had basically the same ongoing plot in every episode thus far. If the rest of the season continues like this, it would be a huge waste.

    by judge briggs

I was sitting back and watching the first 20mins of Carnivale... thinking, "man they need to speed up this show a bit... it's starting to lag..." then all of sudden, we hit the 40min mark in the show and it's in full force... WOW. I guess we're not surprised that the creature of darkness gave birth to Justin and his piece of shit sister... OMG!!! Not to mention, Deadwood is around the corner!!! You guys are lucky fucks though... I am leaving for Africa for 2 years for the Peace Corps. and will have to wait to see not only Lost, but also Alias, Deadwood, Carnivale, BSG, and Arrested Development on DVD..... sigh.... oh well, at least i'll get a few eps. of Deadwood's cocksucking wearing in!!!

    Light vs. Darkness

    by thedarkshape

So who's the creature of light and who's the creature of darkness? Belyakov apparently wasn't aiming to kill Scudder by the time the show rolled around. And he forced the name of Ben's rival out of the other man's mouth -- Alexei Belyakov. Since Ben was "expected" when Management picked him up, does that mean both were given the name of the OPPOSITE rival? Or simply the next generation?

And that blue blood *was* interesting...

    by johnny smith

Belyakov didn't realize it was Alexei because he didn't recognize him. He thought his son was dead. It's logical to assume that he thought the position was passed on to the next in line.

    homergator: tattooed prophets

    by yourhero

i assumed that belaykov was an usher because although there wasn't a visible tattoo, he did bleed purple or blue or whatever, and if you remember a few episodes back when justin had a sort of flashback of an usher cutting his hand, that usher bled purple too. i think the "usher" doesn't usher in the next creature of darkness, rather that he is the creature of darkness and that he is to usher some sort of apocalypse, atomic bomb maybe? also don't forget brother justin's tree tatoo, and the fact that he was supposed to become the usher when scudder dies. maybe the past ushers didn't get their job done, so it keeps on going generation to generation

    Dark vs. Light

    by defythis

The Russian was the prophet of the light for his generation. Scudder was that of darkness, but he wanted no part of being an avatar, so he took himself out of the game. In the next generation, the families are the same but the roles have switched - Ben, child of the prophet of darkness, represents light, while Justin is the dark one. Where Sophie fits in is anyone's guess. As for the scorpian lady, she's a former newscaster from California, and she really does have Scorpian hands (there's a name for the syndrome I can't recall). She actually pitched the idea for the character. And kudos to HBO for having Libby ask for it up the ass (I dunno why, but it was something different, instead of the standard TV drama sex scene).
