Super trippy and awesome!!! A SCANNER DARKLY trailer pops up online!

Published at:  Feb 19, 2005 6:53:15 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here....

Seems there's some question as to WHY ANIMATE THIS. I'll tell you why. If you've ever read A SCANNER DARKLY - then you're probably aware that to do the story justice, it has to be done low budget. The subject matter, the heavy drug overtones, the stream-of-conciousness style of story-telling... Well, to produce the film responsibly... it had to be delivered on a price. A price that could lend itself to altering the very reality of characters, their guise, their image... the way things look. In addition - this particular process of enhanced rotoscoping... it allows for very realistic movement, motion and reality. And for the film to hit the surreal layers this story goes, it needs to be animated - a form that can go from very real to very surreal. This process is IDEAL for that. Ultimately, it's the method chosen by Linklater to tell the story, and frankly... This film won't be for everyone, but I'm here to tell ya know... this will be the most faithful in tone, the script is wonderfully written - and this is going to be one of the films we'll be talking about all year.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here checking in from lovely New Zealand. I'm stuck on dial-up, but when I saw Movie Box had posted a link to iFilm's posting of the trailer for A SCANNER DARKLY, I suffered through the half an hour download for 1 minute of footage. I'm glad I did...

I'm actually kind of freaking out... this is the first time I've posted on this vibrant new design for the site... I feel like I'm in Linklater's movie! I type regular words here and it comes out looking all funky and weird and different on the page!

Anyway, if you've not gotten to see this puppy in the theaters (like me, since Wellington doesn't get CONSTANTINE until next week), give it a click below. I can't wait to see this trailer move 35 feet high!

CLICK IT HERE FOR KEANU, YUMMY WINONA RYDER, AWESOME ROBERT DOWNEY JR. and ULTRA HIGH WOODY!!!

I love animation, and I don't think there are enough adult-oriented animated movies these days.

However, sometimes I wonder why they bother animating some movies...I mean, couldn't this have been filmed live-action?

    Whatever...I'll go see it...

Can we get some Shut The Fuck Up from all the haters now? Looks pretty legit to me. Although from a marketing standpoint, that trailer is gonna be pretty damned confusing to anyone who hasn't read the book. If they want to draw in anyone outside the genre they're going to have to cut something longer that features the performances. If you go through the trouble to get name actors, show 'em off a little. Downey was onscreen for what, like 3 seconds? Anyway, looking forward to this BIG TIME.

And WAKING LIFE must be the most BORING piece of shit I've ever seen. PAINT DRYING THE MOVIE is better, man. I'm sick of guys filming people TALKING ABOUT "PROFOUND" THINGS in order to get a "PROFOUND" FILM. That's not what film is ABOUT. We need motion, we need editing, we need powerful images that somehow acknowledge the author's evolving sensibility, ergo speaking to the Michael Bay inside all of us.

I agree with a poster above. what's the point of the animation. It looks cool, especially the colours. the voices sort of feel odd to me. i wonder if they did the voices as if it were a live action movie or an animated movie? BUT i would really like to have seen this as a live action flick.

    by gristle

What author has a better adaptation track record than Philip K. Dick? "Blade Runner", "Minority Report" (you know it was great), even "Total Recall". "A Scanner Darkly" looks great. Hell, even when filmmakers use the spirit of Dick, you get greatness ("The Truman Show"). Okay, so "Paycheck" and "Impostor" sucked. It's still a pretty good ratio.

    by smarkjobber

...but I have more faith in this project knowing that Linklater is behind both the writing and directing. The wrong Kaufman script in the wrong hands can be merely lackluster ("Confessions...") or downright terrible ("Human Nature" -- which I actually thought would have been terrible even with a Kubrick at the helm). Linklater's no slouch, and definitely not a hack -- he'll probably end up respecting this story better than any other Dick adaptators in the past. The dude has disappointed me exactly once ("Newton Boys"), and I don't expect "A Scanner Darkly" to be the second time (that spot may be reserved for "Bad News Bears"). As a side-query: When you wrote, "I take Harry and this production REALLY FUCKING SERIOUSLY. Like I take vomiting into my mouth in public seriously," am I to infer that you don't take vomiting in your mouth in public seriously? Do you just shrug it off, wipe your mouth on your bib, and continue with your day?

    Linklater is into "personal" films...

    by mister man

although this is one I probably will skip. To digress...."Newton Boys" is an exception to Linklater's usual uniqueness, as the studio really twisted his arm, and forced him to omit just about every unique approach to the material. Fox dropped nearly $30 mil on the movie, and thought they'd insure their investment by watching production like a hawk. What they ended up with, however, is an unwatchable, boring flick, with little of Linklater's vision. It sat on the shelf for nine months, until they dumped it quietly in early spring. I only mention this because that particular film is always brought up whenever Linklater is discussed - like some kind of blot on his career. Back to "Scanner".......the synopsis DID tell me more than I wanted to know. No, I wasn't expecting some "twist," but I do like plot development to evolve without knowledge of key concepts in advance. Linklater's technique at times puts me off, but at least he's doing what he wants, how he wants.

    Synopsis is Complete BS, Anyway

    by emvan

If you're anti-spoiler, just note that the iFilm synopsis contains three large errors in its three sentences, so just try to forget it. ***MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW***.
"Some day in the future, there will be a new highly addictive drug called Substance D, and the main side effect is that it causes split personalities in all who use it." No, the hemispheric break that happens to Arctor is a rare side effect. "Drug cop Fred(Keanu Reeves) is working undercover to catch Bob a big-time drug dealer." No, Fred is not a drug cop and Bob is not a big-time drug dealer. Bob is an undercover narc, who, like all undercover narcs, hangs out with drug users and dealers. Fred is the code-name he uses with his bosses at the DEA. "Little does he realise that he is chasing himself, as Bob is really just one of Fred's many personalities." No, Fred becomes a single alternate personality to Bob.

    WOW

    by topaz4206

Lots of ig'nant comments today. Wait...today? Quickly: 1) "WHY ANIMATE"? Why Film? Why act it on stage? Why Sing an Opera? Why GET UP IN THE MORNING? This is the silliest question I've heard this week. Art is art, you can do what you want with it, when you want with it, HOW you want it. Could animated classics such as Grave of the Fireflies, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Perfect Blue been shot live action? Sure, why not? But they are what they are, and every time I see them I say a silent thank you that they were ever made at all. 2) "THROW A FILTER ON IT..." Filter? LoL. You have obviously never edited 1 second of footage in your life. This is rotoscoped by hand. Give me a link to this magic 'filter' of yours and I will buy it immediately, keep the commission. 3) "THE VOICES SOUND WEIRD". Well, THAT'S weird because all the actors WERE ON SET and filmed this like a REGULAR MOVIE -- all the animation was done after-the-fact. (Google: Rotoscoping). 4) "THIS SUCKS". Okay then, what DOESN'T SUCK? Post results. Extra points for stories that address PHILIP K. DICK'S themes, yet are BETTER than Philip K. Dick. Good luck with that homework assignment.

I think this story was begging for animation of this quality to be the main component - Linklater seems to be defying all expectations with his projects - very refreshing.
    I can't wait for this.
If only some of William Gibson's material were being looked at in the same way - real sci fi would make a HUGE comeback in terms of quality and depth.
CGI just isn't effective for most instances of suspension of disbelief and bursts my bubble too often - even in movies i'm very involved in as a viewer.
i want to see more of this.

    Waking Life rocked my world

    by kentucky colonel

Waking Life introduced me to the larger world of lucid dreaming. After seeing the movie like 5 times on the big screen, dragging whoever I could to go along, I started researching the phenomena of lucid dreaming. As I got into it a bit I found that dream manipulation, while difficult, is possible. Not with any frequency, mind you, but I was (and am) capable of taking control of the direction of some of my dreams. (The key to it all, and the really fuckin' hard part is being able to realise you are in a dream without immediately waking up) Have you ever been able to fly in your dreams, or breathe underwater, or have a dream that is "animated". It's possible. Revisit "Waking Life" for inspiration, check out some lucid dreaming websites (there are plenty) and sleep tight. Oh yeah, this new movie looks kick ass. Can't wait! It's going to be a good year at the movies!!!

As much as I like animation (and I do) something about this technique just doesn't feel right. This rotoscoping technique robs the actors of any subtlety of expression - they all look like "polar express" style motion captured 3d models. I wish this was done as a normal live action film.
