UPDATED! Holy Crap! Check Out The HITCHHIKER

Published at:  Feb 15, 2005 3:34:22 PM CST

Hi, everyone. HREF=mailto:Moriarty@aintitcool.com>"Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Okay... the inevitable has occurred... Disney sent us a politely worded cease-and-desist that's sorta hard to ignore, and we have to take this offline now. Never fear. It's been officially reposted by www.amazon.com Sorry to those of you who didn't get a chance to peek at our copy earlier.

Don’t ask me how... just thank me later. The trailer for HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY is about to land online this week, but I’ve got a vaguely finished version of it that I can show you a little early. I’m not sure how long Disney’s going to be happy with this being on line, so let’s see how long the link stays live.

For now, enjoy your first look at Zaphod’s second head, Ford Prefect in action, Marvin in motion, Humma Kavula and his body (or lack thereof) and more. I actually think they did a really nice job of summing up the way the film works for both fans and non-fans alike. I know there's been a lot of work continuing since the screening I
saw

    by blood simple

looks as though they're taking the quirky 'Men In Black' advertising route (which, lets be honest, how else would you sell this thing). I guess I'm not that impressed. I LOVE the book and I guess I always had a shimmer of hope that Gilliam would make this movie some day... oh well. I'll still see it.

    by hellride

You know it does. Stop making excuses. Just admit it. Face the truth. Douglas Adams is dead and so is any chance at a HHGTTG movie following his vision.

It looks as though they sucked the soul out of the books and spit it down the disposal, leaving a hollow shell to market to the masses.

Early trailer or not, I think one can get a good feel for this, and it certainly looks like they totally disregarded the books, characters, and quirky sense of humor with. I wonder if the same people who did the Earthsea adaptation on the Sci-Fi channel were brought in as writing help on this one?

    A Philosophical Investigation

    by aliceinwonderlnd

Um... now, say for instance that there was this trailer that people here claim to have seen of HHGTTG. And say someone copied it. And say someone sent me a link to it at hcallaghan@cwcom.net, my spam graveyard account. Would that be like, um, a deeply repugnant act and would Disney get in my shit and all? It's an interesting philosophical question... Oh, but to get back on topic, did I say what fabulously witty, erudite, and sexually well-endowed people all you talkbackers are and how much I admire you? Did I not say that before? • The intentions of the studios elude my feeble grasp. Is it just the principle of the thing? Is there some legal issue involved with websites or other film studios or movie theaters or somesuch? I mean, what gives? Exposing the trailer to as large an audience as possible was supposed to be a good thing last time I checked.

"The intentions of the studios elude my feeble grasp"

    by radio crash

The intentions are simple: They 'sneak' it out. Take it down under the pretence of a 'cease and desist' and then suddenly every one on the net wants it. Everyone scrambles to find it. Then it's officially released and they get more hits then they ever would have if they just put it out. It simple marketing tactics, makes something desirable by making it unattainable (for a while anyway).

This is coming from someone who read the books around 20 years ago. It's hard to imagine what it's SUPPOSED to looks like, but I'm pretty impressed. The budget has been well spent. The crowd scene looked nice. It's also important, I think, that they're trying to show the Earth's destruction outside the small Ford/Arthur circle. Even though it's a comedy, it still has to have some meaning. The other thing is that from this trailer, Mos Def was actually a lot funnier than Rockwell. I don't know if you can capture Sam's (or Zaphod's) zaniness in a quick trailer. Almost NO mention of Trillian. Interesting. Let's all keep in mind this needs to at least try to appeal to some kind of mass audience. It was never going to be aimed solely at the fans of the book or sci-fi geeks.

    by schnorbitz

Intriguing. Rather frantic once it gets going. It would have been nice to have had one or two more moments of humour (Are we not getting a "so you're not from Guildford/Des Moines?" in the pub?), or stayed a little longer on Martin Freeman's face when he was told something really alarming. The visuals look as, well, beautiful and decorative as something that small in a window on amazon can look - John Malkovich's lower half is... wow! But, does anyone else get the feeling that Marvin is going to upstage everything going on around him? It looks like Warwick Davis has got the slumped walk _just_ right, and I can't imagine Alan Rickman doing anything wrong. Roll on April. btw, on the imdb entry for the film it says "If you like this title, we also recommend The Star Wars Holiday Special". I don't think so.

    Trailer Trash Blues

    by aliceinwonderlnd

You know, for some reason I couldn't access this from work, and I had a horrid suspicion it might be one of those "North America only" type internet trailer releases, and considering that this was Hitch-Hiker's and so quintessentially British the mere thought angered me so much that I was going to post this lengthy intemperate rant on cultural imperialism and so on and so forth, but now I'm home and saw it was just a firewall thing and I can watch the trailer fine on my laptop, so now I feel all deflated and faintly embarassed. I may post my rant anyway just for the sake of off-topic BS. I've got to agree with the TBer who said it looked amazing but the trailer was put together badly. Unless it's some kind of reflection on the film (which is worrying) the comedy beats seemed either rushed or dragged out. That said, extra head or no, Sam Rockwell looked like he owned that role, and I would have liked to have seen a bit more of Arthur. However the window is so fucking teensy that I'm surprised I could tell the characters apart, frankly. This is my major looking-forward-to-it movie for the year and I get very anxious at the slightest hint that it may suck, even a little bit. It certainly didn't feel like that awesome TTT trailer a couple of years ago, which made the hair stand up on the back of my neck.

    by gul shah

Bypasses have to be built--they just have. Is this another "philosopher's stone/sorcerer's stone" bowdlerizing of a British film? I'm sure Americans can figure out what a bypass is. Sheesh. A small point, maybe, but it doesn't bode well and smacks of studio tinkering. Other than that... the trailer actually looks great. Zaphod sounds hilarious. Ford doesn't seem too bad to me. And the Vogons... well, the Vogons look just as they should.

    by gypsytrobot

Good ol' cheesy BBC fun. Gotta love the Vogons; even though their costumes looked as if they were made from garbage bags, they still seemed funnier than these Hollywood-style Vogons. The old version had Valentine Dyall (Black Guardian), Peter Davison (5th Dr.) and David Prowse (Darth Vader's body); good cheesy Dr. Who-style music; Monty Python-type humor. Apart from some really bad muppet aliens, it was pretty decent. Oh yeah and Arthur was SUPPOSED to be annoying, he definitely was a putz in the books.

Then I remembered my old pet peeve about HHGTTG & Dr. Who...
No matter what universe you're from, no matter what planet, plane of existance, or alternate dimension - you always have a Brittish accent.

Also, the idea that after the guided nuclear missiles, the Magratheans apparently have fly swatters as a second-tier defense gives me giggles.

So-so trailer cut, but what i'm seeing looks really cool and pretty fun. Can't wait for more footage.

    slapstick

    by bluebottle

under the alarm clock at the beginning is a copy of the book, "slapstick". i'm sure this'll be a better adaptation that that was... nice touch tho. at least the directors know what they're up against.

And I like that they don't show too much, wouldn't want to give away too much and ruin the film. And can we finally put the "rapper from brooklyn" whining to rest? As expected, there's nothing "rapper" or "urban" about the performance.

The overly panicked scream of Sam Rockwell had me sold. I am totally going to see this opening day, and bring/force under penalty of death all my friends to see it too.

Add Me To The Sold List...

    by rebeck

I think it looks great and I read all the books. Nice to see the dry humor is still very much in tact: "...You look good, you've grown". The Brits really need to relax and loosen up. As long as that signature dry humor is there, and the book is Stephen Fry, not everyone in the universe has to be English. The fact is the cheapie Brit-style would not work as a major motion picture.

My GOD why can't the suits get it through their damn skulls!!!! Use Quicktime or nothing at all! That viewer sucked. Other than that I can't wait to see the movie.

Because most suits aren't in the thick of it, like us.

Where we are here downloading the stuff, reading the latest trends. We know what's up. The suits are mindless drones. They go by demographics. They're not there in frontlnes.

I have a bad feeling about this...

    by performingmonkey

No matter how bad or good this movie is I foresee it won't be a huge hit. It has Martin Freeman in it (most people know him as Tim from The Office and he was in the Ali G movie), don't know whether he'll be able to carry a full film. This trailer makes the film look too quirky, not cool enough and generally unfunny. And I KNOW that fans of Hitchhikers won't really care about those things but a general movie audience will. And yes the American accents are there SOLELY to appeal to a general audience. On the basis of that trailer, and what I've heard so far about it I'm afraid I don't want to see this movie, but that's me. I'm sure many people will love it. Obviously Hitchiker fans are going to see it, and I'm not one of them so maybe I'm just being an idiot. Am I right in thinking this movie couldn't have been made if Adams was alive?

... have any of you rocket scientist dissers ever read the friggin book? The trailer looks JUST FINE. Even made me chuckle at one point. Very encouraging, if not 'great' in it's own right. Go find somewhere else to vent your jaded-ass spleens, sheesh.

    by minderbinder

Since he *wrote the screenplay*, I doubt that. I'm not sure why people are worried it won't be a huge hit. It doesn't need to be. A hundred films are released a year, and only a handful are huge hits. But the vast majority make a profit. Rumors are saying this thing only cost $50M, and that wouldn't surprise me. If that's the case, it doesn't have to make much at all to make a profit (and have a sequel or more). It would be great if people who have never read the books flock to it, but they don't need to for this thing to be a success.

I'm a longtime fan of the books and I have to say that I liked pretty much everything I saw except for Zaphod's hidden head... I mean, perhaps they can sell it in the movie, but my first reaction is WTF?? I don't know how that's gonna work... but I'm still hoping for the best... Pan out.
