Too Cheap To Buy The DVDs With The Lame Extras' Saturday Night Starz Satcasts THE COMPLETE KILL BILL!!
One of the greatest movies of the last year, or any year.
All 247 minutes of it.
Vol, 1 airs Saturday night at 7 p.m. Vol. 2 at 9 p.m.
If you miss it tonight, Starz will do the same thing Feb. 28, beginning at 9 p.m.
Okay, technically, Miramax long ago was nice enought to give me the "Bill" DVDs with the lame extras. But had they not, I guess I’d be willing to keep around my Starz copies until the HD version comes out. Or at least until the Ultimate Combined Vol. 1/Vol. 2 With The Extras You Really Want standard-def DVD comes out.
Buena Vista Home Video? If you really want to move a lot of Blu-Ray machines, “The Complete Kill Bill Saga.” should be the first title you issue in HD. Not “The English Patient.” Not “Dumbo.” You will charge $29.99 for “The Complete Kill Bill Saga,” with every extra we could ever imagine, and the Disney accountants will have to spend the week after it streets trying to find a bank vault big enough to store all the money.

Does it incorporate the cut scenes with Michael Jai White? If not, I guess it's just the same two separate movies I saw in the theater. So I think we'll have to keep waiting for extended edition DVDs.

*rubbing his knuckles on his lapel* Yep, yep, yep. Proud to say I held out and bought the crappy DVDs previously viewed. Take that Disney. I have my principles. And damn tootin', if they put out a proper edition I'd be there on day one. And most of my friends, all of whom were completely batshit in love with Kill Bill, didn't pick up the DVDs at all. They're all waiting to get their money's worth.
-
I'm not exactly following the whole Blu Ray movement right now, so I wanna know: is Buena Vista really thinking about releasing 'Dumbo' or 'The English Patient' under the format first or was that just a joke? Either way, a geeked-out 'Kill Bill' would be a much better way to go. A lot of consumers bought DVD players only recently; the better way to start a movement would be to cater to the film buffs of the world.

How eerie...I *just* finished watching both volumes back-to-back
by osmosis jones
Anyways, I'm torn about having both volumes edited back into a single movie. It would mean losing the final scene in Vol. 1 (the "revenge is not a straight line" speech by Hattori Hanzo, as well as the reveal of the Bride's daughter still being alive) and the opening of Vol. 2 (The Bride's marvellous "roared & rampaged" speech). Personally, I *like* that the film was split, considering how wildly different both halves are in tone. Plus, if the House Of Blue Leaves is restored to full color, I'll miss that great closeup of Uma's eyes blinking causing the color to snap back on. Anyways, I've heard that the big boxed set of both volumes is set for a tenative August release date, so I can wait. I've already gotten my money's worth from the current releases (watched both of those fuckers about ten times). I just hope that Quentin won't make us wait another six years for his next movie (not counting his section of Sin City).

This is one of two sagas I plan to re-edit on my own (Using Adobe Premiere) just to put it in chronological order. Not to take anything away from the originals, which I loved as-is, but its always a fun side project to see how they play A-to-Z. The other project I'd love to do is Lord Of the Rings trilogy, although the chronology is not QUITE so choppy on those. P's

And I think it's slightly hyperbolic to call KB I-II "one of the greatest movies of the last year, or any year." A fun romp, sure. Luscious eye-candy from the teeming brain of QT, sure, what the hell. But this ain't Lord of the Freaking Rings, fer crissakes. But I still wanna see the Special Edition multi-DVD combined set with the extras we've come to expect from everyone's favorite former video store clerk. Is Criterion listening?

Bwaaaaahahahahahahaha!! Seriously, Herc -- I know it's tempting to geek out at every new format that comes out and want to be first to proclaim its geatness. The downside of course is finding an exit strategy when it turns out you've been participating in the hyping of a format with little or no future. Stating loudly that buying standard DVDs is pretty much pointless now (which you have alluded to on occasion) and that people who do are suckers who will be the owners of obsolete movie collections is becoming quite amusing. Speaking of which, how's your high-def VHS movie collecting going? Dude, pimp Whedon all you want but leave the format exclamations to more level-headed and informed people.

There are too many other dvd's, cd's and books I haven't gotten around to buying to waste my money on yet another version of KB or Hellboy or whatever. True, I'll miss out on those "cool" extras, and all the other kids on my block will point and snicker at me, but somehow, some way, I belive I can live a full life without them. (PS: technically, it'll be "triple-dipping" for KB, since Miramax already took what was supposed to be 1 movie and chopped it into 2 dvd's.)
-
I may not agree with Herc on some of his choices of TV programming, but in the case of high definition discs and the inevitablility of HDTV, he's definitely ahead of the curve compared to some of the folks on this forum. HD quality optical discs ARE coming, and some of us will be watching it by this time next year. Just because you don't have any interest in it or can't afford it doesn't make it any less true. And to those of you who keep putting down the quality of HDTV or the need for it, I have one question. ARE YOU BLIND! Have you ever actually seen a properly set-up HDTV display fed by a good source? Because I've been enjoying HDTV for almost 5 years now, and I have yet to see a single person come to my home and not freak out when they saw a true HD program. By the way, if your sole point of reference is the neighborhood Circuit City or Good Guys, I have some bad news for you. That's like evaluating the quality of prime American beef by going to Sizzlers. The HTDV displays at those places are almost always badly set up, with analog or DVD feeds sometimes being passed off as HD. A lot of the guys working there couldn't tell you the difference between 720p and 1080i if there job depended on it. Face the music folks. The FCC is going to kill our current NTSC analog system in just a few years, forcing us to go all digital. It's not an opinion or theory, it's a done deal. HD and Blu-ray aren't vaporware (Blu-ray has been on sale here in Japan for going on two years now and is already on its second generation product). They are a response to this impending reality. Standard resolution DVDs are wonderful and will be around for years to come. I've been collecting DVDs since late 1996 and I don't regret it one bit (which is not to say there aren't DVDs I regret buying). But don't kid yourself, the DVDs we have today were designed to take maximum advantage of a TV system that was already on the verge of obsolesence. Once the FCC shuts down NTSC, current DVD-quality pictures will be considered at the bottom end of what consumers expect from their TVs.

Unfortunately, Ktak is right that we'll be forced to adopt HD
by frankdrebin
With music, consumers rejected the digital mini-disc and the 5-channel cd, but only because we still had the option of buying the standard cd. (It's actually pretty amazing that the cd has remained unchanged for 20 years now. No wonder the new generation of kids are into downloading--the cd must be an antique medium to them, like the 78rpm was to us adults.) But eventually, only HD tv's and dvd's will be available. So, as you're angrily forced to buy a new screen and player, just remind yourself that ALL technology is temporary.
-
I'm all for high-def and the continuing development of better sound and image. My point is that high-def applied to any and all formats does not automatically mean its success on the market, as in the case of VHS and the most likely short-lived HD DVD. Personally, my money's on Blu-ray, which by all accounts has the best potential of not being one of the transitional formats I just mentioned.
-
Doc Pazuzu, do you know anything about HD? At all? Blu-Ray, HD-VHS and Blu-Ray are all HD formats. Keep buying those standard-def DVDs, Einstein.
-
Of course I know they're all high-def. That doesn't mean they're all going to survive side by side on the market. Read up on your history of video format wars. Enjoy your HD-VHS doorstop.
-
I think doc Pazuzu meant he was betting on Blu-Ray becoming the VHS to HD-DVD's Betamax. I know you're all hyped up about the new coming formats, but you don't have to bite everyone's head off who has an opinion. I got my first HD set in November, and almost can't bear to watch standard programming anymore. That doesn't mean I regret buying the 300 or so DVD's I have (and had to pay for myself). Sure, I'll probably rebuy some of my all time favorites when the new technology players don't cost over $1000.00, but I'll continue to buy regular DVD's in the meantime. I got Matrix Trilogy box set box set for Christmas, but I still recorded all three films off HBO-HD (on my DVR), and will keep them there awhile I'm sure.

Why do I bother continuing to reading the articles of a writer with such obvious disgust and disdain for his readers? I really don't care anymore if I get banned....Herc...you are a royal prick.

by frankdrebin
From what I've read, HD-DVD will be first out of the gate, so if the studios adopt it for new releases and their more popular back-catalog movies, it might be the winner. Take a look at your DVD collection, and I'll bet not that many titles are Columbia (Sony). It'll probably depend on which format Disney and--no joke!--the porn industry go for.

Is it possible that downloading to hard drives will make any DVD
by truthseekr1488
I'm not a great tech wiz (usually I'm a year or two behind the wave) so don't bite my head off, but is it possible the next big thing will do for video what the iPod (etc) has done for music? Instead of dealing with frustrating format compatibility issues and having to always buy new hardware, maybe it will become popular to just purchase your movies from download sites akin to iTunes and save them to hard drives. Hard drives keep getting bigger and more people are getting cable modems for faster download times. The films could have built-in antipiracy and anticopying codecs and perhaps allow authorized purchasers a free or low-cost upgrade as formats improve (i.e., if you bought the regular version you might get the HD upgrade of the same film cheaper.) Notice that they're already selling some camcorders that record direct to a built-in hard drive (microdrive) instead of DV or DVD, so this will familiarize people with the basic concept. I realize this is a different thing from downloading movies but the idea is similar, i.e. using hard drives in place of other media.

Disney is backing Blu-Ray:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000734423
"The realty is that this format war is not going to be won by content alone but in combination with the support from the DVD player manufacturers, who by sheer number vastly support the Blu-ray format." -
Sony was good enough to make their PlayStation 2 "backwards-compatible" with their PlayStaion 1 games, so maybe they'll do the same with standard dvd's...because I don't want to have to buy Terminator 2 for the 4th time (once on vhs, twice on dvd already)!
-
The problem with these high-end, expensive hd systems is that there's nothing to watch on them. It doesn't matter how good the picture is, if the content sucks, the content sucks.
I remember when the dvd players first came out. People were spending over a thousand bucks in order to watch shit like Somewhere in Time or Captain Ron.
Meanwhile, if you waited until Citizen Kane or Indiana Jones came out on dvd, you only had to spend $100 or less for the player.
Now we see Herc and others champing at the bit to get HD-DVD players without any companies listing when and what they would be releasing.
So they're gonna spend a thousand dollars or more and have practically no selection for a few years (kinda like having a new digital display for your photos, and then only looking at Anne Geddes baby pics on it.)
Meanwhile, I'll watch the movies for the story, wait until the hd thing is fairly mainstreamed, and then buy a system for one-tenth what Herc et al paid. -
...especially considering all 3 next-gen game systems will be using hi-def discs (HD-DVD for Xbox2/Gamecube 2, Blu-Ray for PS3) Sure, there will be people who blindly "reject" HD-DVD simply because they want to protect their investment of DVD's, but let's face it - everyone will buy a PS3 so everyone will get a "free" Blu-Ray player. This will likely pressure the studios to support the format (only a few do now) Then soon after that (2007 or so) HDTV's will start to come in under the $1000 mark making them attractive to more people. And it's true - analog TV is supposed to be phased out starting THIS YEAR and after awhile analog broadcasters will even be charged "squatting fees" for taking up bandwidth! Sure you'll have a lot of people either getting digital cable or buying a "convertor" set-top box (to convert digital signals to their analog set), but you'll also have many others (the kind who dropped $800-$1000 on Vegas a few years back) going HDTV. And what's this - their PS3 (long ago said to be a "hub of a digital home entertainment center") will play hi-def discs! One last thing RE: DVD's played on HDTV's - LCD/plasma displays reveal much more detail than a TV and therefore more errors with a picture (compression artifacts and the like) To prove this, play a DVD on a CRT TV and then on a laptop DVD drive. There's a BIG difference in quality (or rather perceived quality) especially with DVD's not encoded as well. The CRT hides errors. An HDTV will not. So DVD's played on TV's of the future will look like poor cousins to their HD-DVD counterparts.

J. Christ III asks a valid question about the longevity of optical disc-based HD storage systems like HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. In my opinion, optical disc-based storage will be with us for some time to come, barring some really spectacular development in data storage technology. Even with the most efficient codecs, HD-quality video takes up a tremendous amount of space. Windows Media 9 HD is one of the most efficent codecs currently in use, yet it requires the full capacity of a DVD-9 dual-layer DVD (8 gigs)to hold one movie length feature. Terminator 2 and a few other films have been available in this format for some time but restrictive anti-piracy digital rights management (DRM) features have made it a pain in the ass to use. Now consider this. Even is you set up a 1 terabyte media server (let's say with four 250 gig hard drives in a RAID array), using WM9 you'd only be able to hold 125 movies in full HD resolution. That's not even a quarter of my DVD collection. At current hard drive prices, the storage cost would come out to about $6 per movie which fairly reasonable. But how many consumers would be willing able to deal with a system like this. And what happens if here is a catastrophic drive failure? You could lose your entire collection of movies instantly. And backing up your movies would require yet another 1 terabyte array. Plus, since copying or tranferring the movie files would probably be prevented by the DRM, borrowing a movie from a friend would probably be out also. This portability is one of the biggest appeals of DVD-sized discs.

I don't wanna start saying blue-ray or HD-DVD or super DVD or whatever fancy new name. It's giving me a headache. What'll happen to the DVDX awards? Will they change their name to the Blueray x awards, blueray is a stupid name. They're all digital video disc. DVD keep it that way.
-
and I'll say it again, whichever format comes out on top (and it will be the one that turns out to be most cost-effective and consumer friendly, not necessarily the best quality), it will eventually get labeled with a generic name like "HD-DVD". This is a name that makes sense to joe consumer. What you'll end up with is ads touting things like "The Sony High-Definition DVD system, with Blu-Ray Technology", not "The Sony Blu-Ray player" because that would make Bubba say "What the hell is a Blue Ray?". Then in a few years, when they've become the standard, everyone will refer to their Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD discs as simply DVD's.
And funny that it was mentioned, because I read an article a few days ago about how the Porn Industry has always been a leader in the home entertainment business, and was credited with being a major reason many early DVD adopters bought DVD players in the first place. They apparently aren't as enthused about high definition technology though, as it will make their "actors" flaws that much more apparent. -
DVD supposedly stands for Digital Versatile Disc...Now that's stupid (although it is better than calling them Video Discs, seeing as how you can use them for music too)
-
I am not going to start replacing all my DVDs for a gimmick.
Okay so they might be superior at the moment, but so what, HD and Blu will become outdated far sooner than you all think.
The only way I'll be replacing my DVDs is when the films goes into file format, like you get music for MP3 players, you'll soon be getting something similar with films, which will be superior than the shitty rip off HD and Blu Ray, and it -
...how about one terabyte "holographic storage" discs? Now THIS is worth holding out for. http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1022

I just can't afford to keep up with all this shit anymore, nor do I have the ambition to replace my movied collection once again (I went from VHS to DVD, and now I have to go to friggin' HD-DVD?!?!). It makes me wonder why I bother owning anything, as it will be obsolete in a year anyway. Oh well, maybe when I finally achieve my dream of becoming a famous filmmaker (or a not so famous one, or a totally obscure university film studie prof.) I can keep up with all this shit. Until then, I'll just enjoy my 200 or so DVDs and weep silently into my pilow.
-
Isn't that... like... old now? who cares? I'd rather see new movies on a fancy HD dvd than a 2-year-old-no-crazy-cgi movie like billy killy, or wtf its called.
HD-DVDs of a +6 DVD box set of Star Wars and Matrix would excite me more, and i'm not much of a fan of either.
I'm sick of AICN hyping up this blu ray and HD shit when its realitically YEARS AND YEARS down the road from getting to us "average joes" I mean, DVD players only went sub 100 two years ago. cant you be content for two seconds before wanting something new?
