Some Badass Vogons Photos Have Hit the Web!!! Cool Hitchhiker's Guide stuff!

Published at:  Feb 10, 2005 3:34:52 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here - these are some of the images that were shown at BNAT 6 back in December, and it looks like Disney finally decided to release the Vogon look for all of your beady eyes. Ok, so what is the story with Moriarty's Vogon Poetry contest? Man... You know him, He's going through all those Vogon Poems counting pentameter and being all anal about it. He told me, he'd be finished judging the contest by December. Here ya go...

There's some new pics on IGN of the Vogons! Look really cool...I know you might have seen these already, but for fans who haven't: Check out the Vogons Here!

    by billy goat

I really, really like this. They do indeed have a British-ness about them. And I'm very glad they're not CG. My only tiny complaint is that I'm pretty sure the book described them as green, but that might just be the lighting. ....And yeah, I don't like Marvin. I always pictured him as a cross between the "I Robot" robots and the Terminator. Designed to look like a paragon of the human form; but because it's Marvin, he holds himself wrong, stooped over, and ruins the effect. And I'm pretty sure that was in the book too. ...Eh, but I'm nitpicking. As long as the Ultimate Answer hasn't been changed, I'll be happy.

In this new era of seeing our beloved geek classics being brought to life on the screen, this one looks as if they are on the right track... of course, my visual reference when I read the Adams books was based on the rather crappy production values of the BBC miniseries, so it would be hard not to improve on that... and I'm not a CGI hater, but it does this old-schooler's heart good to see real, physical animatronics again... I hope this is as good as it COULD be... Pan out.

I will be a happy little camper 'cause MIB was a imaginative, fun summer flick and galaxy quest is the best 80's flick never made in the 80's. highly entertaining with an excellent cast. and if THGTTG is at the very least fun and entertaining then i reckon we will all leave the cinema happy....and the vogons look pretty cool.

    by brendon

Garth Jennings is very talented. Very. Sad to see he didn't make as much of an impact on the "100 Greatest Music Videos" show C4 aired last weekend in the UK, but that's triflingly insignificant in view of the fact that he really does seem to be making something pretty darn good indeed here. Might well turn out to be the comedy of the year, and already has proven to be better designed, scripted and cast than just about any other studio release of the coming months (Brothers Grimm aside, I admit). I've spoken to people who've seen the test screening cut and nothing they say has me worried at all.

Thank GOD they're not CGI, too. I love the suits--a nice touch. Ford and Trillian look great. Not sure about Marvin, though. The real question is still Mos Def. Not the fact that he's black--the fact that he's American. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, though--I know he's a decent actor. I just hope they don't have him doing a Don-Cheadle-channelling-Dick-Van-Dyke Cockney accent. That was god-awful.

In a strange way, they're not quite what I expected, and yet, they're so close to exactly what they looked like in my head, they've kind of usurped any previous imagery I might have had. WAY WAY better than the Vogons in the original movie rendition. Maybe it's just because I grew up on Labyrinth and Dark Crystal and I live for this kind of stuff, somehow, I'm actually having a bit of hope for this project...

    by boomstick81

Actually, both CGI and puppets occupy the same physical universe.. and that's the film they're printed on. Movies are interesting. Appearance, sound, music, angles and pacing can all be manipulated. Nothing is truly real. Everything is basically manufactured. About 100 years or so ago people had the same argument with the sound, music and camera position in movies. "You can't add that music here or shoot from there. That's not real. No person would be able to hear that or look from there." So the argument for 'it exists in reality and therefore it's better' doesn't really hold up. I do agree that the puppet probably looks beter than any organic CGI character, but I don't broadly claim that all CGI sucks.

You mark my words: Because of word of mouth, the film version of HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE will be DOA. Moriarty was and is completely full of shit when he said Roach and Jennings tried to be faithful to the source material and Douglas Adams would be pleased. If they wanted to be faithful, the absolute least they would have done was CAST A WHITE ACTOR TO PLAY FORD FUCKING PREFECT! Do you want to know what Adams intended? Watch the TV show, now available on VHS and DVD. Because for the forseeable future, it will be the ONLY accurate represntation of Adams' masterpiece.

It's been a very long time since I've read the Wizard of Oz

    by timbenzedrine

I'm absolutely positive that Toto never spoke. I would have remembered something like that. Concerning the HitchHikers film, Zaphod's two heads always seemed like too important a point to eliminate. Both the stage production and the TV show went out of their way to pull off this effect , and I'm a little disappointed that now that the film is being made with an effects budget that could really do this convincingly, they just decided to drop it altogether. Also, Marvin's design is too cute, it doesn't seem right at all. I probably won't rush out to see this, but I might rent the DVD out of morbid curiousity.

    by timbenzedrine

since all the Oz books are still in print, a trip to your local bookstore and a quick skim through the Oz chapters should lay to rest any and all your lingering doubt. As a matter of fact, I was doing just that a few weeks ago when I took my kid to the local Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy of a Princess of Mars to get him aquainted with John Carter (I've been forcing the classics on him since he first started reading) Never, ever go by anything you read on the web (because most of us here are morons) or hear from your illiterate friends.(ditto)

Oh I intend to, don't worry about that. I think I have copy around the house somewhere. I just meant right now. You see I'm so active right now because I'm working on school work and doing some weekend cleaning for V-day. This argument will be done and over with before I get to digging up (got a lot of books) that copy. So if anyone wanted to dissagree with me I was willing to back down if they could confirm otherwise. If I found out later that Toto did speak, I'd let the world know come next HGTTG post with all the crazy I can muster... which is more crazy than a bag of rabid cats with a dingle hopper. Keep filling your kid's head with the good stuff! Don't know how young he/she is but Flatland is a good way to get them into math. Peace.

Looked through the book. As far as I could tell you are right TimBenzedrine, Toto Can't talk. Thus, I stand down. However, I did find something interesting... The film seems to have cut about 1/4 of the ending. Five whole chapters stand between the balloon taking off with Oz and the White Witch sending Dorothy home. Looks like some pretty interesting stuff, possibly even important. When I have more time I'm going to read it, but for now... a few more posts then back to work! Peace.

...a few words taken out of context does not a point make. The point is, as Peter Jackson and Chris Columbus have demonstrated, you do NOT alienate the fan base. If you do, then you are DEAD. I am sure you are aware of those rumored to have been attached to the Harry Potter movies before Columbus came on board and what their intentions were. The only reason why Jo Rowling's vision remained intact is because Columbus knew that to do anything less would have pissed off the fans and the movie would have been a colossal flop. Why Roach and Jennings could not adhere to this simple philosophy I will never be able to figure out or understand. All I know is based on the casting decisions and stills made available here and elsewhere on the net the TRUE fans of Adams and the HITCHHIKER'S series will stay away from this film and, again, it will be DOA.

    by neosamurai85

You know, we can disagree on things till the sun goes down, but before I go any further I must address a simple fact. You and I cannot define a real true fan. A fan does not have to fit into any specific interpretation of a work to be a fan of it. To be a fan you simply have to love the material. In my way, which you may not agree with, I love Adams
