So does this make Cary Grant, Clark Kent's Pa'

Published at:  Feb 05, 2005 4:31:43 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with genuine Cool News! Eva Marie Saint has been cast as Ma Kent. The gal one wants to spend a romantic life in the nose of Mr Lincoln with. She's absolutely one of the most enchanting Hitchcock ladies. She has elegant features and an air of classic to her still to this day. It's absolutely thrilling that she's Ma Kent. There's just a part of me that wants Martin Landau to play a nice neighbor that's helping Martha with the farm, since Jonathan has passed away. Great choice by Singer! Way to Go!

    by lazarus long

If they're going that classic with Ma, you have to imagine that Pops is going to be someone SUPER iconic. Who's still alive? You'd think Paul Newman would be too old, but Eva Marie Saint is 80 also. So I don't see that as a problem. I can't really think of anyone else who could pull off midwestern. Peter Fonda would be cool but against Saint he's too young.

    80!?!?!?!

    by one9deuce

Ma Kent is going to be 80 in this? Isn't Brandon Routh 25? This movie is a disaster waiting to happen. Mainly because Bryan Singer is a workmanlike director and Superman needs a visionary to bring him to the screen. Oh well.

    by l.h.puttgrass

And that's a cool new pic of your current condition. To take Arnold's job, I think you would have to establish residency in California along with being half machine. I'm not sure what the qualifications for governor in Texas are. But enough about that. How about clearing up the fog of vagueness concerning your leg? The original post from Father Geek said, "...there is more than a little irony involved in this little tragedy...". Thats intriguing. So out with it man! WHAT DID YOU DO!!

Jonathan Kent RIP: I don't think so...

    by falcon-1

Just because Donner killed him off in the first movie, that doesn't automatically mean the character is going to be dead in this one. When that first movie came out, both Kents were dead when Clark became Superman. Puzo or Donner decided to keep Martha alive just for that scene where Clark asks to have half his salary sent back home to her (I guess only hayseeds take care of their parents). But since then, the Kents have BOTH been revitalized in the Superman legend and it couldn't have been a better decision. The two of them have served as a touchstone for Clark when he needed to get away from it all. They have become his sounding board and offered "down-home" advice to many of Superman's greatest decisions. I think Singer is going to follow suit and keep Jonathan around. And if they can get an icon like Newman to play him, all the better. Besides, Warners will have the final say and if they don't have him in the movie, it may be confusing for all those young readers out there who'll be inspired to buy Superman comic books. My question though is what was Famke Jannsen doing at the Sydney studios where they're gearing up to shoot? Could she be our new Ursa? Or is it possible that she's been cast as Superman's biological mom, Lara?

Saint is the Ma, and not the grand ma???

    by the founder

What the hell is Singer doing? This woman is to all. Yeah she's a cassic actress, and good, but this doesn't make any since. If supes was like in his 40's then yeah. WB and singer are trying to follow the spiderman route in my opinion. I'm look at toby and Aunt Mae? Aunt Mae and uncle Ben looked to be more his grandparents then aunt and uncle, unless they were his great aunt and uncle. I agree Singer is a see what's been done director, he lacks the creative vision for this project. i'm sure it'll be good character wise as well as acting, but expect much in the way of a visual stunning movie.

    by gheorghe zamfir

So Pa Kent probably will be dead, and the Kents are supposed to be older, Smallville changed that up but in the comics it was always an older Ma and Pa Kent who had never had kids of their own that stumbled across lil orphan kal.

    by george newman

While it is very unusual for that kind of age gap between a mother and child, you must keep in mind that Clark was not birthed by Martha, haha. She could have adopted him at any age. That correction being made, while I like the idea of them continuing the original story, clark is just not going to look old enough.... Holy cow, I just looked up her pic on IMDB and she looks really really old. Crap. She's Definitely a Grandma Kent. Good grief, and those pics are from 2000. Ugh, this isn't very cool. I know some may like her for nostalgic reasons, but this is not going to cut it.

... but make him more like his character Royal Tenenbaum, and make Superman VERY dysfuntional. And bring back the character of Lenny Luthor, from Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, and cast Ben Stiller in the role. Somehow, somewhere, someone would say "oh wow, genius casting!!" Lol. Death to Superman, somebody threaten Singer into doing X3 instead.

They should cast Cary Grant as Clark Kent

    by nicemarmot

He looked pretty Clark Kentish in Bringing Up Baby, so why not put the CGI wizards to work? This new guy looks pretty bland, like most of today's young actors, but then I guess Clark Kent isn't supposed to be overly charismatic. Anyway, you know the day is coming soon enough. Why not start trashing classic Hollywood with the completely played out superhero genre?

Singer is gonna knock this baby outta the park!!!...

    by abesapien

Everything I've been hearing about this project has been spot on. The casting of Ma Kent is no different- Eva Marie is perfect for the role- she not only has the classic looks which are perfect for the character but her face possesses a worldly wisdom of strength and integrity which is necessary for the role. I love Singers work too- some of what he did with X2 reminded me of early Speilberg which is why Im so happy hes taking on this franchise- hes also a big fan of the original films which always helps. My only reservations lie with the casting of Clark Kent/Superman- Brandon Routh looks the part but I'm not sure he has the acting chops for the role. But I trust Singer- if he feels hes right then Im willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I just cant wait to see some production stills of this baby- Supes couldnt be in better hands.

    abesapien... you have a point

    by oh_riginal

This movie couldn't be in better hands, but that doesn't keep X3 from suffering a potential downfall as a franchise. Singer did X1 decent, and went beyond my expectations in X2, and the way that movie ended, I couldn't wait for X3. Since he deserted the franchise, X3 seems more and more like it won't be able to top X2, which I'm sure it could have, in Singers hands. I'm a Superman fan, don't get me wrong, but I prefer X-Men first.

    Pa Kent Clarification

    by clonerangeruk

    http://www.superherohype.com/news/supermannews.php?id=2549

IESB.net caught up with Eva Marie Saint this weekend and asked about her playing Martha Kent in Bryan Singer's upcoming Superman movie. Here are several clips:

Eva said her shoot will be in March and will last for approximately 3 weeks. We can only assume then that the first few scenes must be shot on the Kent farm.

She also acknowledged that she is playing a widow. She is playing the same Martha Kent character that was married to Glenn Fords character, Pa Kent in the first film. This storyline will continue from where Superman 2 left off as previously reported.

    she's really old...

    by jancola

Brandon Routh was born in 1979. Eva Marie Saint was born in 1924. So she was 55 years old when they found Superman?!?! Gosh, no wonder Ma Kent had given up on having kids, she was ready to retire already. She's a classic actress, but she's ridiculously old for the part. Kate Bosworth is too young, Eva Marie Saint is too old... I give up on this movie.

    Age discontinuity!

    by wormie

The actors playing Supes, Lois and Perry are all considerably younger than the actors playing younger versions of the same characters on Smallville, yet Eva Maria Saint seems way too old to convince anyone that she is Brandon Routh's natural mother. Wasn't there a detail in one of the comics' origin stories that the Kents couldn't get into town for months due to bad weather so people were not surprised that they never noticed she was pregnant? I know Singer is ignoring Superman III & IV, but Martha died sometime between Clark's arrival at the Daily Planet in Supes I and his return to Smallville in Supes III. Also, will Spacey's Luthor be like Hackman's? John Byrne's revamp of the character as an evil businessman in 1986 has been reflected in all the subsequent screen adaptations (i.e. Lois & Clark, Smallville, the Animated Series), but Hackman's version was different.

    From Superherohype.com

    by darkkelt

Scooper 'Rich' sent us this scoop, which we can't confirm at this time. We can tell you that 'Rich' was the first one to tell us that Kal Penn is actually Luthor's right-hand man, which at first contradicted reports that said he was playing Superman's best friend, but now turns out to be true. If the rest is accurate, there's some big names still to be officially announced for Warner Bros.' Superman:

I have some exclusive casting news on Superman Returns. Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, Van Wilder) has indeed signed on, as a earring wearing, tattooed punk that serves as Luthor's right hand man.

Famke Janssen's (X-Men 1 & 2, Goldeneye) meeting with director Bryan Singer down under was for Superman Returns, and she has snagged the role of Lora, the birth mother of The Man Of Steel, while Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs Of New York, The Last Of The Mohicans) has gotten the role of his birth father, Jor-El.

As for the other villians, Jude Law (Cold Mountain, Gattaca) has finally signed on as General Zod, and Kevin Bacon (Mystic River, Apollo 13) has signed as John Corbin.

Finally, Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile) has gotten the role of a reporter at the Daily Planet, who becomes Clarke's rival after his return. Expect WB to make these casting bits official in about a week.

Stay tuned for the possible confirmations of these casting bits.
