Yeah, seriously... what happened? And speaking of Chan Wook Park I'm so bummed out because I was able to attain both S4MV and Oldboy from overseas but have yet been able to watch them because of the construction being done on my house since last summer. I want to be able to enjoy both flicks on my home theater and not have to settle for my laptop for the time being. Oh well, sorry to bore you all :) Interesting to note that comingsoon.net has Oldboy set to debut theatrically in the states in late March. Good stuff.

Could someone please explain the charm of Old Boy to me?

    by garbageman33

I thought we all hated movies where the villain explains his motives in exhausting detail? And what's with that long tracking shot of Dae-Su fucking all those guys up (you know, the one everyone keeps raving about)? I've seen punches land closer to their target in a Saturday Night Live skit. And given the relationship between Dae-Su and his captor, why was one of them 10-15 years younger than the other? Did Dae-Su get held back a bunch of times or what? I did enjoy the set design. And the split screen shot of Dae-Su and the major events that happened while he was held captive was really powerful. But overall, I was disappointed. Oh, and yes, I GOT it. It was meant to be a minor offense, so we could identify with him. It could be us in that bad Best Western-looking room for 15 years. I just thought it was lazy (albeit stylish)storytelling.

    Garbage33: I can, and will! (pt 1)

    by otto parts

OK, we'll assume that everybody reading this has seen Oldboy, but if you haven't, DO NOT READ THIS TALKBACK, MANY PEOPLE ARE LITTERING THEIR POSTS WITH SPOILERS, GIVING NO WARNING WHATSOEVER!! Gar, I'm a busy man, so I'll put up my response to your question in segments throughout the day. Here is the first thing I want you to consider: do you like revenge movies? Do you know of many revenge movies? Think about the usual pattern which a revenge plot follows, and then think about Oldboy. I'll come back to write pt 2 in short while. Peace

MORE MAJOR SPOILERS. That's mighty big of you, Otto. I wanted to like the movie, but certain things wrecked it for me. For starters, I don't like thrillers in which if just one person would have done what a normal person would do in similar circumstances, there wouldn't be a movie. In this case, don't you think Dae-Su would have ever asked Mido about her parents? I mean, if your dad killed your mom and then disappeared, that's the sort of thing that might come up in conversation, right? Or was she hypnotized to forget that part of her life? That's another thing. I think explaining away things by saying, "Well, you were, uh, hypnotized at the time" is really lazy. But hey, that's just me. I'm looking forward to hearing what you thought.

...now, let's think about that magnificent soundtrack. I'm convinced that American Beauty wouldn't have received half the attention it did if it didn't have that sublime soundtrack. Now, I also believe that Oldboy would be a remarkable film if it no score whatsoever. So the fact that it has a beautiful score is like this unbelievably valuable free gift that you get with an already magnificent product.

I agree with you on the music. It provided a nice counterpoint to what was happening on screen. In fact, technically, I thought the film was great (the sets, the cinematography, everything). It's the story I had issues with. I just don't think it stands up to scrutiny. As a visceral experience, yeah, Old Boy was spectacular. But I guess because of the unending praise it got on this site, I was expecting more. Like a story that didn't hang on coincidence and suspension of disbelief. Thanks for checking back.

    pt 3

    by otto parts

Now, consider what makes some films more memorable than others. a story can be told in many ways, but what makes it sticky? Why did so many people come away from, for example, The Matrix, utterly blown away, and convinced that they had seen something quite important? The story of The Matrix could have been told so many different ways, many of which would have failed miserably. What was it about the particular methods they employed to tell the story which left the viewer with such a profound sense of satisfaction? How about Reservoir Dogs? Ask the same question of that film. I'll be back again later, but I want you to think about all of this, more carefully than you have done so far, and once I've given you a few more questions to ponder, I will enjoy giving you my own answers.

For the record, I loved Reservoir Dogs but never really bought into the Matrix. I hope you're taking my criticisms into consideration as well. And I appreciate the fact that you're one of the few people on this site who understands that their can be more than one interpretation of a movie, even one as apparently sacred as Old Boy.
