Some Cool News Stills From A SCANNER DARKLY Online Now!!

Published at:  Jan 27, 2005 2:44:06 PM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Someone who was on the crew of the film sent me this link, which is a few days old at this point, but it’s worth checking out because there are some GREAT new images from Richard Linklater’s upcoming Philip K Dick adaptation, A SCANNER DARKLY, our first looks at Robert Downey Jr., Rory Cochrane, and Woody Harrelson in the film.

I love this script dearly, and can’t wait to see this onscreen later in the year. I think it’s going to be one of the most unusual things we see released, and for fans of the author, it may be the first truly faithful adaptation ever. Worth celebrating, indeed.

"Moriarty" out.

Tracing live action film is not 'animation'...

    by jimmy_009

It may be animated in that it moves, but it's not Animation with a capital A. It's a waste of time.

how is cel filling not animation?

    by toe jam

it's no less animation than the pixar movies that use high-end software engines to generate the movements of characters and objects.

  • And if it look slike a comic book in motion, that should open up all kinds of doors. Imagine a new Heavy Metal movie done this way. Or a lesser known comic series. As popular as Shrek 2 was, I just can't get into the "plastic" looking computer animation that is saturating the market. Hand drawn animation is still the king (even if it's hand drawn on a computer screen).

And Ralph Bakshi movies do not count....

    by doom ii

When I say know one has though of this before, I mean really well done animation that looks like a painting in every scene. Waking Life was a good movie, but the animation was all over the place. This looks really fantastic.

it's not a "new" technique. rotoscoping has been around forever.

    and...

    by thekinginyellow

...it's not animation in the traditional sense of the word. the only way it can be called animation is that it has to be done frame by frame. seeing as how linklater aint writing the story maybe it'll be worth something. i could care less that it's rotoscoped. after suburbia, i realized that linklater really really sucks. slacker and dazed and confused are the only gems here. what happened richard? found a new gimmick?

    I defy anyone...

    by jonahmavesin

...to show me a place on the internet that is more filled with vitriol and flaming than the Aint It Cool News talkbacks. I mean seriously. On every single page, within a handful of talkback posts, there are instantly multiple flamewars going. Witness this one - First post, irrelevant. Second post, FLAME BOMB!!! Next post, point about the animation. A few posts later, FLAME HARPOON AGAINST ALL ANIMATION DISCUSSERS!!!

Don't get me wrong, I've got no problem with it. But every once in a while I just wonder where you all get the ENERGY for it. I imagine you all sitting at home refreshing www.aintitcool.com 100 times a minute just waiting for a fresh news item page to launch your 1,000th round of hyperbole and apoplexy.

I don't think www.jewmuslimgrudgematch.com or www.doyouhatebushido.com can hold a candle to this place for sheer virtual anger. Bravo. Keep up the good work.

Richard Linklater is a true artist with both skill and talent...this will certainly warrant a couple of hours to watch.

I wouldn't call it true animation

    by rupee88

It is just painting over the photographic image..that is not animation. But whatever you call it, it looks different and kinda cool.

    That picture proves my point.

    by ynd

Keira Knightley is SUCH a Winona Ryder for the new millennium. I honestly have difficulty telling them apart. And I totally thought it was Keira in this flick. As to the fella/dame who was ragging on Linklater -- WHAT? Dude's probably the best American filmmaker working -- no hyperbole. Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Tape, Waking Life, School of Rock and last year's best pic, Before Sunset. All solid, most great films. For consistency, prolificacy and quality (both in indie and Hollywood films), I can't think of anybody who can touch him.

This is the fuckin thunderdome baby!!!! Where only the swiftest, meanest, most obtuse, or mind- numbingly stupid survive. There is no halfway in this pit of animosity.
Mommies not gonna save ya when the trolls come gunnin' for ya, so have your verbal arsenal at the ready. Or sit back, relax and enjoy the show like me. I'm still shocked Harry doesn't charge for admission!
