Amelie to join Forrest and Leon in the search of THE DA VINCI CODE'

Published at:  Jan 22, 2005 9:09:07 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've never read THE DA VINCI CODE. I'm sure it's a fine novel, but I'm more than happy to wait for the big screen adaptation, even if it is again pairing Ron Howard with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. I have no idea of Tom Hanks playing the lead is a good idea. I have no opinion on Jean Reno being in the movie other than Reno is badass. Now the rumor started by the AFP is that Audrey Tautou is in the film as well, booting Julie Delpy and Sophie Marceau from the actor's chair. I don't think that one has been confirmed yet, but I like Tautou a whole lot more than I like Sophie Marceau and I think Delpy is great, but Tautou has her edged out in the cuteness department... at least in my opinion. Once again, I have no opinion on this, except that Audrey is cute as a button and I'll watch her in any movie as long as she flashes those pretty brown eyes at me a few times. What do you folks think of how THE DA VINCI CODE is coming together?

Hi, there

Not a big event to me, because i'm truly fed up by all the noise around this book but just to let you know It's official now : Audrey Tautou has been chosen to play the french cryptologist character in Da Vinci Code. Since an AFP release yesterday it's in all parisian newspapers today... So after Amélie and Mathilde, the actress' got another first name in her résumé. From now call her Sophie from this book character...

Or, if they want to be a bit more age-appropriate for Hanks, Isabelle Adjani. That woman hasn't aged a day in thirty years.

A good tactic to tell people who recomment the book to you: say, "I don't give a shit about all that Catholic mumbo jumbo." Usually people agree that I shouldn't read the book.

i'm curious what makes you think this role isn't right for Hanks. It seems like everytime he's up for a part, everyone says he's not right for it and he proves people wrong. The guy has a lot more range than people think because they view him as simply a nice guy. I would just say look at his body of work, and you'll see more versatility than most are willing to admit.

... and as for audrey tautou, i'll go see any movie of hers as long as she flashes her brown eye at me a few times. ... that's what you MEANT to say, isn't it?

  • Seriously, I think Moriarty's the only one on this site who actaully reads, and that's only because of his script reviews. Quint...turn off the DVD, pick up the Da Vinci Code (or ANY OTHER BOOK) and read it. It's kind of a cool thing, literature.

I agree with the above poster about this whole reading craze

    by dented helmet

I don't normally give into fads, but I decided to pick up a book and try it out. It's actually a helluva thing. I started about a year and a half ago and manage to read 2 books a week, far more rewarding then movies. Let's see, Quint doesn't read, Moriarity does, and Harry pretends to read every book ever rumored to become a movie.

    The book is entertaining

    by mrcere

The book IS entertaining but it isn't any great literary anything. It is pop-culture in a book. It isn't anti anything and it isn't Catholic more than its Christian and pro or con it just is meant to entertain. Dan Brown isn't a great writer by any technical measurement but he spins a good yarn, and there is no harm in that. Hanks is definitely not my choice, but hey, he can act. Delpy would be a good choice here, but it honestly doesn't matter much. The adaptation will be the whole key here. Can they manage to keep much of the content and intrigue intact or will film dumb everything down as to make the film "American Treasure: Europe."

    by sithlord_999

Geeks of the world: Don't be intimidated by the hype of the book, DON'T WAIT FOR RON HOWARD TO RUIN THE STORY- READ THIS BOOK- it is, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining and fast reads, a great, fluid adventure, you will not be disappointed. Don't wait for the movie- it would be a disservice to you. Tom Hanks as the lead? I'm not so enthusiastic about it. Ron Howard directing? OUCH! Akiva (whatever) adapting the book, OUCH! I have no hopes that this will be a decent adaptation. Actually I expect it to suck- I'm not looking forward to the movie. Why? I LOVED the book, that's why.
Geeks of the world, do yourselves a favor, and read this book.

    Don't buy the hype

    by kingink123

I kept hearing so much about this book, from friends, news, history teacher at school, so I picked up the book and read it and did a lot of historical research on the Templars, the Council of Nicea, Priory of Scion, etc, etc, and found that the book was about 95% bullshit when it came to its supposed "factual basis". On top of that, the characters were bland and 2-diminsional and not much different from ones found in lame Left Behind-type books. The whole thing just devolves into a cheesy "worship the goddess" theme and the ending is so anti-climactic that I kept thinking that they forgot to include a couple of chapters somewhere.

    Tom Hanks and Irene Jacob

    by vynson

I suppose if Dan Brown had done it as a comic book or graphic novel, some of the illiterates around here might have read THE DAVINCI CODE. As it is, it seems kind of silly to have people who aren't familiar with the characters speculating on who would play them best. I've read the book and enjoyed it thoroughly. I think Tom Hanks is a great casting choice and I also think Julie Delpy will be terrific, though my first choice for Neveu is Irene Jacob.

This, pretty much in a nutshell, is how the book goes on for a few hundred pages. I mean, how much of a mystery is it when there are only 3 characters? And you could see the reason Sophie was upset with her grandfather coming a mile off (with me all the while thinking if that were me, I'd be saying "Go grandpa!"). And how much of a secret society is it when 2 of the aforementioned 3 characters have long discussions as to detailed dates and places within their history, as if `everybody knows'. It's just a silly, poorly written book, that I can't believe has been in the top 10 bestseller list for nearly 2 years.

It's not that great a book

    by jack burton

The story is ok but not all that exciting. Action/chase scenes are broken up by long passages about the grail history and the entire plot is really just a way to deliver a rather complicated conspiracy theory about the grail. If you've ever seen documentaries on the Discovery channel about the Templars and the different theories regarding the grail this stuff isn't all that mindblowing.
So far the casting seems strange, I really can't see Hanks as the lead. I pictured Harrison Ford, and I think at one point the book even says the main character resembles Harrison Ford. (I can't remember the guy's name, that's how little impact the book left with me.)

I'm sorry, but I can't stand Hanks, most of my peers are the same. Casting Hanks assured that the film doesn't even get my rental dollars. But to be fair, after reading this likely work of plagiarism.

  • Reno is a good chocie for the Detective. Hanks is bad as Langdon. I would have figured Viggo or Dennis Quaid. And Sophie was obviously Jennifer Garner, eventhough the character is French. But the way Sophie is, is like Sydney Bristow. Dont know how Silas is going to turn out without people offending Albinos. And the Catholic church is going to protest this shit. I thought a movie adaptation would not work, but National Treasure made a killing and it's a Divinci Rip Off.

  • Face it, Hanks is a great actor that people relate to. But how many women do you know that are in love with him the way they loved Mel or Harrison or Connery or Clooney? I don't know any woman who is ready to jump Forrest Gump's bones. And he's going to have to work out to pull off the minor stunt work required. He can't have his Ladykillers - Terminal gut.
