The Reeves-Stevenses

Published at:  Jan 21, 2005 3:20:48 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens, the couple who wrote the Vulcan-set “The Forge” - easily the best episode of “Star Trek: Enterprise” to air this season - contribute their second teleplay to the series, a ditty I have yet to see called “Observer Effect.”

Still not keen to watch? Check out the invisotext for possible super-spoilage! It’s said to feature the Organians from “Errand of Mercy”!!!

Was the title of a TOS episode involving the Klingons and their first real confrontation with the federation. This was interupted by the Orgainians. A surperior race that stopped them from destroying each other.

And seriously, I don't 'get' your analogy. Another thing I don't seriously get: why people who don't like this show feel the need to spout on and on about it to people who actually do like the show. Is it really that difficult to imagine that someone has different tastes than you? Is it really that difficult to except that your perception of entertainment is only one of many opinions? Most of you don't even offer anything constructive to the discussion. You just come in, take a shit on our screens, then leave. If you want to participate, be a little more engaging. And no, saying you don't "like" something isn't enough. Because it's obvious to everyone there are people who do like this show, even though our numbers are small.

Enterprise has gotten much better this year

    by kikstad

It's a shame that the first three seasons were such a creative waste because this new season has had some really great episodes so far for Star Trek fans (in my opinion). I'll keep watching, although I hope the damage to the franchise hasn't already been done.

    I've decided that...

    by childe roland

...they can keep this show on the air as long as they want so long as they remove the "Star Trek" from the name (although doing that would get it cancelled so fast that Scott Bakula would actually travel back in time). Then I wouldn't be tempted to tune in every couple of weeks on the off chance that you folks are right and it really is getting better (that sure bit me in the ass last week!). Seriously, you will likely never know someone who loved Trek more passionately than I once did. But this is not Trek. This is dreck.

Season 4 is a big improvement

    by spyguy

Unfortunately, Berman & Braga pretty much killed the show (and the last embers of the STAR TREK franchise) with their craptastic mishandling of Seasons 2 & 3. Discouraged by the previous seasons, fans have moved on to BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to get their SF fix and the ratings are reflecting that. After episode #100, ENTERPRISE (and STAR TREK) is done.

    by bloodstained

I mean, Backula has made it public in the press he will not return next year and UPN has said they have decided to move their target audience away from mostly male and black viewers to a predominately female one. And hasn't this thing finished dead last a couple of times this season in the ratings?

how to lose a franchise in seven years..

    by silver shamrock

Berman and Braga bank on ST kool-aid drinker who will watch anything as long as it's ST. This hardcore group has always had problems reproducing itself, or even getting a date for that matter, and the group gets smaller every year via Natural Selection. These "fans" are really what killed the show by being so damn docile and undemanding. that's how you wound up with so many bad movies in a row, the geeks keep coughing up the dough no matter how putrid it gets. Braga laughs at you as he rolls nekkid in your cash.

    by sg7

I actually enjoy Enterprise. And SG-1 and SG:A and BSG. Enterprise has had some great episodes. I liked last season but I guess the ADD folks couldn't grok it. I must admit: the new BSG is the best of the current lot by a wide margin. However, you want to see complete unadulterated CRAP: watch Andromeda. Why that festering POS is still on the air is beyond me. The reason I like ST:E is simple: the characters in the show aren't a bunch of tea-sipping pompous leotard wearing gits spouting off about how great they are while quoting Shakespeare.

    Silver has a point

    by kikstad

As a long-time Trek fan, I stopped watching the television shows when Voyager came on and proved to be a horror, imho. I also refused to watch the movie Star Trek Nemesis (and still haven't seen it.) I tuned in to the first few episodes of Enterprise and after realizing they had no regard for Trek continuity or for the premise of Star Trek itself, I (like others) gave up on the show. But I've returned this season and I actually am enjoying the storylines. But the characters still aren't on the level of the casts on the Original Series, the Next Generation, or Deep Space Nine. I always blamed the powers-that-be when they blamed the "fans" for growing tired of Trek, when the fact of the matter was that the QUALITY of Trek just wasn't good enough to keep most of our interest. Giving the creative power to people like Coto who RESPECT the essence of the show is the right move, but it might sadly be too late to make a difference. I fear that they'll continue to blame the failure of Enterprise on the fans (or on that lame excuse that Star Trek has run it's course) instead of recognizing their own creative mis-steps over the years. If they make a new movie, or if they decide on a brand new mini-series, or a television show, I hope Manny plays a huge creative role, because anything still wrong with Trek is merely left-over baggage from the clueless folks who came before.

Looks like someone let the children out

    by falcon5768

First off, Star Trek WASNT in the title till everyone who hated the show made a big stink about it not being in the title. Second other than a episode or two of season 1 and all of season 2 Enterprise has been the best Star Trek since TOS certainly better than DS9 which everyone who wants to think they are cool raves about. Third us yanks? Whens the last time England has put out a decent SciFi show (BSG doesnt count we made it you guys paid for it and the new version of Dr Who has yet to be seen) Lets not forget something very simular to what happened with the ST franchise happend to your own precious Dr Who in the fact it because stale and was taken off the air only to come back. Lastly SG1 is a trash show, soorry to say, had you said Farscape or even the first few years of B5 you would have had a argument.... but SG1? That shows had more owners than MLB teams because no one wanted it but no one was willing to let it die. It finally gets a little bit better and now people think its awsome? come on, and already its suffering from ST syndrom by spinning of series. Besides its TWO DIFFERENT SHOWS, same as most scifi out there. The biggest problems with Trek these days is oversaturation, and the simple fact that the mythos is weighing down its own show. When ENT wraps be it this year, or in the coming years if it makes it past this year they should give it till the 50th anaversary (surprisingly not too far off) and then start over again from the top with Kirk and company in a show that mixes the phase II concepts (which is mostly a mix of TMP and TNG since both came from Phase II) and TOS and start over with frsh tales much in the way that BSG did except more in tune with Trek. And it NEEDS to be on a major network like NBC again, Enterprise almost was and in the end it got stuck to BET2 ... er I mean UPN. The audience just wasnt there not when Moesha was leading into it. Trek isnt dead but the fans are.

because unless the fans really rally behind "Enterprise" from here on out for the season there is absolutely NO QUESTION that mr. julie chen is going to put trek on the bench for a few years to chill it and the fans out after this season. and i hate to break it to you, if the suits really get their hands on trek (one word: retool) when it does come back it's probably blow moosenuts. and before the jackoffs mouth off about "Enterprise" already blowing moosenuts i urge you to THINK! we've got the reeves-stevens' working on the show now and for anybody still watching you know that they've got it going in the right direction, and i will promise you now: once the suits get their paws on trek you will be looking back on this time, on these episodes and saying "d'oh!" and that's all i've got to say. - a longtime occasional trek fan who has seen the writing on the wall

    "I don't 'get' your analogy."

    by voice o. reason

"Errand of Mercy" was a really important episode of the original Star Trek that set up the Klingons as the main bad guys, and the Organian Peace Treaty as the thing that kept them in check. Therefore, not knowing what the episode was is simular to not knowing what the Ten Commandments were, since they pretty much set up the governing morality according to God for thousands of years. Ain't Cool News is a place where Star Trek nerds tend to gather. Church is a place where beleivers in God tend to gather. Therefore, declaring you have no knowledge of a really importnat episode of Star Trek at Ain't It Cool News is similar enough to going to church and declaring no knowledge of the Ten Commandments to make a humorous analogy out of.

    Stargates, BSG......

    by hairy nutsack

First off, Stargate SG-1 has been the most fun comicbook I have ever watched on TV. I mean no disrespect, but you seriously have to be an idiot not to like this show. That off my chest, I do like Enterprise but it seems to miss every chance it has of really being the great show it could be. The whole Temporal Cold War could have been a great concept if they had only taking the time travel aspect by the balls and done something with it, and with it I mean a crossover with any of the other Trek shows. Put them into situations like the DS9 Tribbles episode. Do something that mattered and had an influence on the future timelines, SOMETHING!! ANYTHING!! The scene in the recent Brent Spiner episodes where Archer talks his way into Klingon space was just excruciating. He was polite with a Klingon making threats to him while pretending to be a Klingon, and the Klingon on the other end bought it? FUCK THAT!! Remember when Riker was challenged on the bridge of the Klingon ship he was part-timing on? He kicked that fool's ass to get respect. Missed chances, wrong ideas, and just an okay show. This really could have been so much better.

Here's what Trek Today acctually said about that :

Enterprise showrunner Manny Coto today denied a rumour that crew members had already been told of the show's cancellation.

"It's another inane rumour," Coto told TrekToday. "Right now, the crew is building the sets for episodes 20-21, which I'm writing. Rick [Berman] and Brannon [Braga] are writing episode 22, which is going to be fantastic!"

    by symphy

Seriously wonderful. Why couldn't Enterprise have been more like this in the first couple years? Then it'd have been ratings and acclaim than at least its two most immediate predecessors.

I continue to Tivo Enterprise not because it's always good, but because the 1 in 4 good episodes (as one talkbacker put it) ARE worth the other 3 examples of mediocrity. It's a very well cast, well acted, and (usually) well directed show -- it's the scriptwriting that generally falters. But more eps like last night will keep me watching until they drag it off the air.

This episode may have been a new take on an old theme, but it was executed very well (all you Enterprise haters can just go fuck yourself). Also, I think this is the first time where EVERY actor on the show had useful/valuable/important screen time. This episode demonstrates how each episode should make use of everyones talents. I actually liked the last couple of episodes and didn't think they were dull at all. I mean, yeah, there were no explosions or anything, but blowing things ups isn't what Star Trek is supposed to be about. Anyway, I like the Trek universe, I've been a big fan since seeing the Original Series in syndication as a kid, and I've been very disappointed with the way the direction the franchise has been going in the past decade. But whether it lives or dies, I'm glad to see Enterprise getting on the right track. Carry on.

    by drath

I don't really think the Organians were consistant with how they will behave later, but then they were never consistant since they tried to force peace and then disappeared. Now I guess we can say they decided to reinstate their non-involvement protocol. Anyway, I really liked that Hoshi proved to be so smart. I wasn't expecting her to be THAT brilliant. Now I'm wondering if someone's parents didn't dabble in some eugenics enhancements. It would certainly tie in nicely with a return of Brenner's Soong. It was also nice to see Anthony Montgomery doing something for a change, even if he wasn't playing his regular character. Anyone else unimpressed with how UPN advertised next week? I've read it's about the start of creating the Federation and assembling the diplomats of the Founding Worlds, but UPN advertises some guys in make-up clowning around. I guess they figure more casual viewers will be drawn to that instead. Yawn.
