David Yates officially announced by WB as helming HARRY POTTER 5!!!

Published at:  Jan 21, 2005 2:20:57 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the official announcement to what we all knew already. Mostly unknown director David Yates has landed in the HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX director's chair.

Yates is most known for his TV work like STATE OF PLAY, which I don't think has gotten much, if any, play in the States. I've gotten emailed from people in the past about his work and they say it's top notch, so I'm happy to give him a chance at Hogwarts. I can't wait to see his cast fall into place. Who's Umbridge!?!?

FILM LONDON recently interviewed Yates about his work and he talks a little bit about doing the next POTTER film. Read the full interview here!

Were you surprised to be asked to direct the latest Harry Potter installment?

I was really thrilled, and excited by the prospect. It’s the kind of scale of film I’ve wanted to make since I was 14. Since The Way We live Now I’d been getting film offers coming through, but none of them were that interesting, though I had done a lot of work getting a film version of Brideshead Revisited ready – though we just fell short of our budget.

How do you feel about this project?

I’m really looking forward to it, and am working my way through all of the books, and starting to get a bit addicted to the world which is fantastic and wonderfully realised.

The whole of the UK was gripped with Harry Potter fever when the books were first released, did you rush to the bookshops with the masses?

I hadn’t read a Potter book until earlier this year, because I was so busy making stuff or reading other scripts, so it has been a real pleasure to catch up with everyone else over the past weeks and months.

Hmmm, I'm glad he's digging the books now. Let's just hope he gets the details right, which still hasn't been 100% nailed correctly in any of the POTTER films to date. Anyway, it's official now, so celebrate and be merry!

Soon Hermione will need sensual tutoring...

    by smarkjobber

I apologize for my subject line, but I thought I might as well get that out of this TB's system before it gets out of hand. Now, as for Yates -- since I have yet to see any of his work, I can't whine about his hiring (I can still grunt about Newell, however). Wish "OoP" was in Cuaron's hands, but at the same time, I quite like the idea of different directors getting a crack at Hogwarts. This could have been worse news, like, "Danny Leiner to direct 'Half Blood Prince.'"

His TV work has been great.

    by chorleyfm

Both State of Play and sex traffic were both great, my only concern is thta I don't know how much of that was him as the writers for both are fantastic. Abi Morgan is a great new playright and Paul Abbott is the best TV writer in the UK not named Russel T Davies.

Jo Brand would be the perfect Umbridge....

    by splinter

Look her up, English comedienne - couldn't get her out of my head for the duration of the book - would be absolutely spot-on casting.

    That is all.

  • ...Umbridge and Luna Lovegood are both potentially great characters that'll need strong acting and writing behind them. I'm curious to see who'll be cast for Professor Umbridge and, whilst likely to be an unknown, fingers crossed that whoever ends up as Luna can pull it off. While the kids are getting up there in years, it's important that the she be a good actress, as kids tend to read their lines with an almost manic energy and Luna needs to have an almost dreamy, half-asleep quality about her.

    Cast Judi Dench.

  • I still think Dawn French would kick ass as Umbridge though, even if she played "The Fat Lady" in the last one. Given the high profile cast in previous films however, I somehow think they'll try to get Dame Judi Dench. ************* I'm really sad that Alfonso Cauron isn't doing this one. Order of the Phoenix is not my favorite of the books, and it'll probably be the hardest to adapt into a movie. It's tone is much grimmer than the previous installments (which is saying a lot), plus it's "the length of a bible." Good luck to the team!

Don't like it? Don't frickin' watch it

    by filker-tom

Besides being a pretty good series of books and movies (not great, but, jeez, they are pretty good), they are a money machine, mm-kay? Scholastic Books has basically saved itself with HP. Warner Bros. ain't gonna let it go. Amazon, Borders, B&N, and ever-damn-body else makes a big deal about it. You are well within your rights to hate HP if you are so inclined, and to not bother with it -- but saying "it sucks, I hate it, I say it should go away" will work about as well as my saying it about the Bush administration did. :) Suck up and deal.

I think Cuaron did a good job with the details of the environmen

    by minderbinder

Dumbledore and the school itself were WAY more true to the books, although it was a bit jarring that it was different from the first two. Hope Cuaron is back for 6 or 7. The biggest problem with the details is the missing important parts of the plot. They've cut most of the info about Harry's dad, Lupin and Sirius, which is one of the best parts of the books. Not to mention the changes that are rarely if ever improvements on the books - the movies gave me the impression that Kloves has disdain for the books and thinks he knows better than Rowling (especially in little comic moments). I'm more curious about the new writer, I've always wondered if the cuts were in the script, or if they cut from the script, or even shot and edited out.

    It's ALL in the DETAILS!!

    by coolhive

Each of the Potter movies thus far have been wonderfully imaginative and exciting. It's because they HAVE gotten the details right that they work so well. I've read all the books thus far, and I'd say this is shaping up to be one of the best film franchises ever. I look forward to the next 4 films with great anticipation.

Patricia Routledge who played Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) in the BBC comedy show Keeping Up Appearances would make a good Umbridge.

    Umbridge and Tonks

    by extremetidal

I agree with junkfood. I read "Order of the Phoenix" envisioning precisely Judi Dench in the role of Umbridge. I bet JKR wrote her with Dame Judi in mind. I don't know who'd play a good Tonks, but she'd better be the cutest, spunkiest, punkiest little lesbian witch they can find!

Needs to be either 4-hour or 2 movies.

    by zerocorpse

This is a huge book, with a lot of details that can't simply be skirted or dropped to fit a two-hour time frame. I sincerely hope they don't take the cheap route and deliver a hollow movie that squeezes 4-6 hours worth of storytelling into 2 hours of gimmicky moments. Of course, it all depends on what happens with Goblet of Fire...

Judi Dench is spot on for Umbridge...

    by drlektor

But reading Order of the Phoenix I always saw Dawn French there, I admit she's prone to play the lighter characters but there were a few things on BBC2 I remember, Murder Most Horrid I think it was called? Where she played some sinister roles. Patricia Routledge again would be perfect, but you're really going to have to try to shake off the roles she's played before, the UK watchers anyway will always see her as Hyacinth. I don't know the director all that well, but this should be handled okay, very depressing at times but touched with the typical Rowling humour.
Hmm, SatanSteve, you reckon you're "sick to death of harry fuckface potter" and yet you clicked the page open? And what? Read the news? uh... okay... got to wonder exactly why you did that if it bothers you so much. Oh yeah, obvious now...

Of course... I'd prefer a TV series.

    by zerocorpse

The whole series of books would play out better as a long-running television series, where they cover the whole thing without cutting out important parts, as Prisoner of Azkaban and the other movies did. I'd even accept a well-made animated series (not anime, though) that covered the whole story from book one to the end in detail... Just so long as they don't wimp out on the deaths and grimmer parts.

    Casting HP5

    by nice marmot

Judi Dench??? Wow, more than one person thought this would be good casting for Umbridge? I totally disagree. I pictured Umbridge as much fatter, a little younger, w/ a much more of a an ugly frog face , & an annoying high pitched voice. Unfortunately I have no better casting choice. AMEN to Jessica Stevenson for Tonks!!!! I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to cast Kate Winslett or Keira Knightly (very safe casting). I think it would be funny to see Lennox Lewis play the very minor role of Kingsley Shacklebolt.

I'm sure Dame Dench is glad to hear herself so closely associated with a character that is repeatedly reffered to as toad-like in appearance.

JackBristow, Mad Eye Moody is to be played by . . .

    by nice marmot

. . . Brendan Gleeson. Which is funny to me because my first choice was always the guy who played his character's dad in Braveheart, James Cosmo. I think Gleeson is a tad bit too young for the part but think he'll pull it off just fine.

  • I only saw about 5 minutes of SEX TRAFFIC on CBC. (Canadian Broadcasting Corportation) and I know Brits got it as well. It didn't air in the states, but if it did, it would be suited for something on HBO. I just saw the sequence where the pimp beats the crap out of the underage kids and then one guy was going to rape the chick and made her take off her top. Kinda funny this guy is directing Harry Potter considering how his last movie about kids was all about, you know, rape and prositution and stuff. Anyway, for people whining that Curron should come back, hey I loved his work POA too, but give someone else a shot. At least this guy doesn't have something as generic and bland as PUSHING TIN in his resume. Check out the imdb entry for SEX TRAFFIC at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419365/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9c2V4IHRyYWZmb2N8aHRtbD0xfG5tPW9u;fc=2;ft=21;fm=1
