The Voice Of The Guide Is...

Published at:  Jan 20, 2005 5:58:46 AM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

... Stephen Fry. Which is, in my opinion, pretty damn great as far as casting goes. We got a ton of e-mail about it today, but I wrote to Robbie Stamp, the film's producer, just to verify it 100% before running it. And sure enough... it's true!

And just so you know what I’m talking about, I’m referring to probably the single most important role that had yet to be announced for Disney’s upcoming THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY film. Stephen Fry will be playing the voice of The Guide, which is a pretty major role in the film. It’s deeply appropriate, because Fry was a close friend of Adams, and said one of the most astute things I’ve ever heard someone say in trying to sum up the popularity of these books:

“Douglas has in common with certain rare artists... the ability to make the beholder feel that he is addressing them and them alone; I think this in part explains the immense strength and fervor of the fan base.”

He was also the first person to write a tribute entry on the official site after Douglas died, which read:

"Oh Douglas -- your friends don't know what to think or say. You've left the party far, far too early. All those who knew you -- and that includes millions who never met you -- loved you. I can't think of anything more to write. Love, Stephen".

This is one of those projects where every single choice seems to be right on the money, and I can’t wait to hear Fry’s voice in Dolby 5.1 on May 6th when I settle into my seat for this one...

"Moriarty" out.

Perfect casting. Fry is just so witty and droll, with a loveable heart. The latest American fad seems to be to watch all the best British TV shows, and QI is right up there with the best of them. It's a quiz show where the questions are "Quite Interesting", and points are given for humerous or incredibly smart answers, and deducted for obvious replies. Fry is the QImaster, and it's another role that he's perfect in. Try downloading it, USA, because as far as I'm aware there's no QI DVD yet. Then you'll realise that Fry is perfect for the role.

Stephen Fry is an absolute comic genious both in his acting roles and in his writing.

Although to tell the truth I always thought Hugh Laurie was perfect for the role of Arthur dent. He's good at playing utter twats.

    by cory849

I still dont know about "every choice". My biggest worry is Mos Def as Ford. NOT because he's black. Because he's an American. and in my brain at least, Ford is British. They're ALL British. Except for Zaphod. And Im not sold on Marvin's humongous head yet. It looks cumbersome and doesnt leave much room for non-verbal dialogue. Both choices might be just AWESOME. I dont know... but I worry. We'll have to wait and see.

    DARKER EDGE??? NON-VERBAL DIALOGUE??? FIRST???

    by otto parts

ok - here's the deal: Hitchhiker's doesn't need a darker edge - it's a comedy, not a black comedy, justa comedy. No darker edge needed, what a ridiculous thing to suggest. Secondly, what the fuck is non-verbal dialogue when it's at home, and why is it prerequisite on Marvin's head being smaller? Another ludicrous comment. Thirdly - SilentType: plenty of people have been banned for calling Harry a fat fuck or words to that effect, but other people get away with ti, because they actually have something of substance to say, on-topic, relating to the article above the talkback. Telling everybody that you're first is about as off-topic as you can be: get it into your thick little skull that nobody wants to click on an interesting article, only to find that some snotty-nosed, pus-faced fanboy prick has decided to kcik off the talkback by telling everyone that they are "first" when half the time, they aren't anyway, and they end up looking like even bigger gimps. Instead of asking why you were deleted, try asking yourself what the fuck you thought you were playing at when you posted "first". What was your aim? Did you think you would become revered by people who have never had the honor of being first? Why are you so empty that you need that kind of reassurance from people? In future, write about the article, not your position in the TB. Then you will probably be respected by somebody who agrees with your opinion. It's a much more satifactory way to earn respect, because let's face it, no-one was gonna read your post and reply "dude, you are, like, so cool!! You were first, man!! Go, SilentType! Rock out with your cock out!!"

You know what would have been hilarious?

    by billy goat

James Burke, of "Connections" and "The Day the Universe Changed". He'd narrate it like the Guide was another one of his books-turned-TV-shows. He'd be using the story of Arthur Dent as an excuse to bounce between entries from the book. And just like on his TV shows, he'd pop up in the middle of the scenes he's talking about. And unlike on TV, characters would see him and ask what the hell he's doing there... hilarious, I tells ya!

Stephen Fry WAS the book. Sort of.

    by jacknewton

If I'm recalling correctly, Fry read the audio book version of THGTTG way back when, and, to my ear, sounded eaxactly how the guide should sound. He voiced the other characters as well, but was especially good as the guide.

Thanks to the wonderful Peter Jones from the radio series, the Book will always have to be played as slightly smug and pedantic. Fry is perfect for that.

    by dr. sid schaefer

What a relief! He's got a voice that seems as if it's a 45 slowed down to 33. Perfect for Marvin. Now, let's hope the casting of Mos Def doesn't sink this thing.

    by jacklint

I'm still buzzing about Alan Rickman and then this! Every single decision from production to casting has been completely inspired. So it makes you wonder with all the brilliant things that they're doing for this movie - how they could have fucked up so horribly with the design of the Heart of Gold. It is supposed to be the sleekest, sexiest, most badass ship ever built - NOT a bulbous turd. Those concept paintings of the Heart of Gold (I pray to god that they're just that) are mind-numbingly retarted. I'm sorry, its just that everything else is just sooo perfect, that every time I hear MORE increadible news, I always think, if only the Heart of Gold didnt suck.

I'm with you on this, the whole visual design in this movie looks completely screwed up. What's with the oversized golfball that's Marvin's head? And deep thought looking like some sort of huge Imac? it seems they decided on using balls (and rounded cubes) for just about everything. Dudes, you're designing the visuals for the HHGTTG, not Spaceballs II!
