New HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY poster is released! Whip out your towels and come take a look!!!

Published at:  Jan 15, 2005 3:18:29 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love, love, love this new HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY poster. It's not so much that the design is spectacular or there's some brilliant artwork, but for some reason it really fits for me. Just look at how many winks at the fans they put into the one-sheet!

The film looks like it's going to be a whole helluva lot of fun and I can't wait to see how they incorporate Adams' brilliant random and hysterical tangents that define his writing style into the film. I'm in the middle of THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE at the moment and still chugging! I'll have the entire HITCHHIKER'S series finished by the time the movie comes out! Lucky me, with still 3/4ths of the series to go!!!

    Arthur Dent gets FOURTH billing?

    by maxcalifornia.

Check out the poster credits : Sam Rockwell, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, and then Martin Freeman!! C'mon, he's the lead freaking role! Zaphod and Trillian probably won't even show up until 45 minutes in. Very strange. The only time I remember something like this happening was with the original Superman, you had Brando, Hackman, and then Christopher Reeve, but its hardly like Sam Rockwell and Mos Def are stars of that stature. Eeh and I don't think the poster is particularly great, its like they don't want to scare anyone away by showing anything wacky or anything too sci-fi-ish, and the average moviegoer would not see this poster and think "comedy". Well let's see the trailer, anyway.

    This Pleases Me Greatly

What a good job, hopefully this will usher in a less ernest phase of british (American Money) films that kicked off with Shaun O Dead. Not that films like love actually dont have merit, they have a formula but this looks to be another step on the road to putting british humour and culture firmly on the map. Looking forward to this.

I noticed they worked the whale into the one-sheet. Nice little detail only die-hard fans would know about. Pretty promising.

    Nice poster...

    by morgoth

...and I also see the number 42 floating in the ether beside the whale. Another nice touch. It would've been cool to see "Don't Panic!" in yellow caps on a red disk...just like the button (still have mine...eat yer hearts out fans :) that came with the HHGTG Commodore64 computer game. Fingers tightly crossed on this one and I hope there are no poopy-farty-burpy moments that so cheapen a film (can you say Gimli's character in LoTR?).

If Superman is the only other time you remember supporting characters getting top billing, then maybe you should start paying attention to more posters. It's common practice to put the more recognizable names first, and Martin Freeman, although well known in Britain for his roles in The office and Love Actually, is still a newcomer to American film. George Clooney and Drew Barrymore got top billing over Sam Rockwell in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

  • I have that feeling that film is gonna have exactly the same effects on viewers than the first Star Wars trilogy had about 25 years ago. Science-fiction full of wit and goof, fantasy full of robots and spaceships... that's the fucking REAL DEAL!

    In fairness

    by neosamurai85

There is a reason the first two books tend to be the best in the series. The bulk of these two works more than any of the following had already been worked in the radio series and were refined in the books. Mostly Harmless for example I think was a completely new work and had not existed in any previous form. Many of the jokes from THHGTTG and TRATEOFU have been served to us as radio, TV miniseries, and video game. I agree these two works are the best of the series, but there is plenty of nuggets worth sifting for in the later. The Starship Titanic, that poor guy who keeps reincarnating only to be casually killed by Arthur, learning the art of flying

    by iamjacksuserid

Reading the books recently, the way Zaphod says "man" and "baby" and stuff like that, I mean, that is Rockwell and I was very comfortable picturing Rockwell as Zaphod as I read the books. And the pics of him have been exciting too.

personally, i like the third the best

    by jacklint

Life, Universe and Everything has so many great little bits - and by far the most structured plot (not that it really matters for Hitchhikers). Agrajag, and the Alien who insult everybody are probably my all time favorite bits in the whole series. It's probably the one ive read the most. I really hope they continue to make the entire "trilogy". Of course, a Dirk Gently movie would be fantastic! Simon Pegg as Dirk Gently!!

RE: "Simon Pegg as Dirk Gently!!"

    by neosamurai85

Good point about the third. Personally I'm scared shitless of people working from scratch on Adams works to film. HHGTTG is being made after Adams had already written drafts. Still the idea of Simon Pegg is very interesting. I think I'd have to see Spaced before I could say. I need to see Pegg's range, if that could show it. SOTD didn't show me anything to think he would work, but he's a cool guy. He'd preobably do as decent a job as anybody adapting it. The Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul is probably the best work Adams did, as far as abillity as a writer, even with its ending. Peace.

    by ecupirate71

The poster and first trailer look good enough to get peoples attention. I think a sci-fi/comedy is always a good draw if it is well done. I also think the casting, Mos Def in particular, is dead on.

...and I love the "42" in the background. Looks good so far...I just hope it really works and retains alot of Adams' humor and wit. Fingers crossed!

    Fantasy Dirk casting

    by seepgood

Simon Pegg should NOT play Dirk Gently. Dirk should be strange, shabby, flamboyant, slightly unsettling, moderately irritating, with a certain dignity that offsets his preposterousness. And underneath it all he should be *sharp*. A little bit like a young, back-street Dr Who. Pegg just doesn't fit the bill - he's far too everyman-ish. He would, on the other hand, make a perfect Richard McDuff - between Tim and especially Shaun, he's more or less played that part already (a clever, whimsical nerd in his late 20s/early 30s, still clinging to a student lifestyle and unsure of where he wants his life to go, with a girlfriend and a boss who want him to settle down, get serious, take responsibility etc). As for Dirk...how does the name Dylan Moran sound?
