So What The Hell Was Borat Doing At That Rodeo, Anyway'!

Published at:  Jan 14, 2005 6:16:46 AM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I can tell you this much... he was not shooting material for a new season of DA ALI G SHOW, despite what the Reuters news story claims.

See, I know people who know Borat. If you’ve seen his appearances on DA ALI G SHOW, then you know that Borat is an eager-to-please correspondent with his own show on Kazakhztan television. Right now, if I’m not mistaken, he’s actually making a documentary about America. I’m trying to track Borat down for an interview. I’ve been warned about his powerful personal funk, but I don’t care... I think this is a man with a message, and I’m going to do my best to bring you the first details of his upcoming movie right here on AICN in the weeks ahead. Now that he’s made headlines, I figured it was time to break the silence and start really digging into what just might be one of the year’s most important and hard-hitting documentary films.

No... seriously. You’ll see.

"Moriarty" out.

  • The Reuters article speculated that if Ali G. had not high-tailed it out of the rodeo, he may have been shot. If he really wanted to get a serious message across, he wouldn't have made jokes about it and he WOULD have risked getting shot over it. That's what REAL revolutionaries do when they REALLY want to get a message across. They put themselves in harm's way AND STAY THERE until the message gets across. You people love the Iraqis so much, then learn from them. They're getting shot or blown-up left and right (no pun intended). Had Ali been shot or even killed, maybe he could have been vindicated. Maybe this STEREOTYPE of the gun-toting, blood-thirsty right-wing Republican would have been legitimized and more people would start listening to people like him and Michael Moore. As it is, he looks like yet another left-wing coward that hates confrontation unless he's the one starting it, and then he's too good to stick around to take the response.

This isn't about who is factually right or wrong. This is about what someone is willing to do to make people listen. At least right-wing Republicans aren't afraid to go out on a limb and take ACTION, or at the very list take what they dish out. All the left can do is spew propaganda, then hide in the corner and cry about how stupid the right-wingers supposedly are and how nobody understands them.

There's funnier hidden-identity shit on old episodes of Punk'd, and that's not saying a lot because Punk'd sucks. You want humor on TV that lets you laugh at the embarrassment and dismay of others? Watch "Cheaters", instead. This guy doesn't humiliate his show subjects 1/100th as well as that show does.

    Cohen is a genius...

    by napoleondynamite

Some people just don't get irony. The "Throw the Jew Down the Well" performance was brilliant not because it was "shocking" or un-PC, or even because Cohen is ironocally Jewish. It was brilliant because everyone in that redneck fucking shitkicker bar was clapping and singing along. Cohen was exposing the red states for what they really are...a bunch of backwards, inbred, feeble-minded, racist, pig-eyed morons and bigots who believe in creationism and think that Iraq blew up the Empire State Bulding. The National Anthem thing was great as well. A bunch of sister-fucking hillbillies at a rodeo got punked. Fucking fabulous. And why would I give a shit if somebody massacres a song? Who gives a shit? How does that hurt anyone? Grow the fuck up already, you fucking flag-waving brown-shirts. It's called "FREEDOM OF SPEECH." Look it up sometime and find something REAL to get offended by. You're probably all the same retards who think that Randy Moss pretending to moon the fans at Lambeau field is the attrocity of the century. By the way, my favorite two Ali G momements are 1.) the one where he was talking to Pat Buchanan about the "BLT's" in Iraq and Buchanan just started playing along and saying "BLT's" right with him and 2.) When he's talking to Andy Rooney and Rooney keeps correcting his grammar, then when Rooney gets pissed and tries to end the interview, Ali starts accusing him of being "racialist." Fucking brilliant. Cohen is the heir to Andy Kaufmann.

  • Sasha Cohen, aka Ali G, aka Borat, has never EVER TRIED TO BE POLITICAL!!!! HE HAS ALWAYS POKED FUN AT EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, EVEN HIMSELF!!! It was never ever about politics! All it was about was good old fashioned humor. Perhaps if you guys had seen his stuff in England you wouldn't feel so bad! Jesus Christ, ever since the election happened America has forgotten what it is to be funny IN A NON-POLITICAL SENSE! Why has everyone just decided that joke = insult? People are always on the defensive, and forgotten what it is to be actually FUNNY! You know what the documentary is going to be about? You really want to know?! It's going to be about how Borat completely misunderstands everything and everyone! Heh heh, probably my all time favorite Borat interview was when he was in England interviewing anti-hunting protestors, Borat:"No, no, in Kazakstan we don't hunt fox........." Protestor:"very good - " Borat:"We hunt de bear, but we don't hunt de fox!" Protestor:"WHAT?!" Borat:"No, no, don't get angry. We don't hunt de fox!"

    Clueless

    by luminescence

A lot of people don't really seem to get what Baron Cohen is trying to do with Ali-G and Borat (and the gay fashion reporter) - that is to expose prejudices, tear people down and generally subvert the mainstream - it is purely a bonus that what he does is extremely funny (to most people) and even if it is not, alot of his work is still highly revealing and powerful, but those who are offended simply do not see this, and I suspect the message is lost on alot of fans also. No doubt much of what he does is done mainly for laughs, but to dismiss Cohen's actions as ignorant pranks and the antics of a mindless racist is just plain wrong and ignorant in itself. It's worth knowing that Cohen is a highly intelligent Cambridge educated scholar. He is about as far removed as possible from the chracters he creates and possesses more intelligence than most of the people he interviews! History will look back on Cohen in a far more positive light than any of you critics realise - and my guess is many of you will become converts yourself in years to come. He is ahead of his time in many respects, but as with all great comedians and genius' of the past, they are often looked upon with ridicule and disdain by many before being recognised for the true visionaries they are. That may sound a bit over the top, and perhaps it is, but you just wait and see...

This site promotes art in all its forms, something conservatism tries to kill. Notice the lack of conservative artists out there? That's because the term conservative artist is practically an oxy-moron. Sure they are out there, but they are outnumbered a thousand fold by more talented and open minded liberal artists. You wonder why celebrities are all anti-bush? Why 99% of filmmakers hate your way of life? It's because of their open mindedness and compassion, two traits great people have and conservatives lack in spades. So if you don't like it here with our constant conservative bashing and anti-Bush films(completely justified as they are) then stay the fuck away. This place isn't for your kind.

    by judo john

You need to look up on your Judaism, dude. Judaism is not like other religions, where you can join the community simply by expressing a wish to do so. It's very simple: if your mother is Jewish, you're Jewish. It also works the other way around: you're not Jewish unless you have a mother who is Jewish. Having a Jewish father does not count, since paternity can be disputed. The latter is a fact that drives many people with Jewish fathers and non-Jewish mothers to despair. They'd like to be recognized as Jews, but they're not accepted by the Jewish community because they don't have a Jewish mother. So Jews not only know what it is to be discriminated against by non-Jews; they discriminate against their own, as well.

    Actually, Judo John...

    by docpazuzu

...for most modern, reform Jews that's an outdated concept. Only very conservative interpretations retain that idea: "Reform's position is that the same requirements must be applied to establish the status of the child of a mixed (interfaith) marriage, regardless of whether the mother or the father is Jewish. Therefore, in 1983, the CCAR issued the following resolution:

The Central Conference of American Rabbis declares that the child of one Jewish parent is under the presumption of Jewish descent. This presumption of the Jewish status of the offspring of any mixed marriage is to be established through appropriate and timely public and formal acts of identification with the Jewish faith and people. The performance of these mitzvot serves to commit those who participate in them, both parent and child, to Jewish life." ...... (from http://www.shamash.org/lists/scj-faq/HTML/faq/18-index.html)

I'm glad to hear it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be true everywhere. I know several European half-Jews who would love to be recognized by the Jewish communities of their respective countries but aren't because it's their fathers who are Jewish rather than their mothers. They've tried to convince the Jewish communities that the maternity issue is outdated, only to be told that rules are rules and that it has always been like that. One guy I know feels very negative about Judaism because of all this. He loves Jewish traditions and feels very much that he's part of them, but the fact that he isn't recognized by "real" Jews sits very badly with him.

Someone made fun of the National Anthem! My sense of nationalism is so tightly strung that I can't handle it when someone makes even an implied criticism. Waaaaah!

Perhaps you have. And yet, perhaps you might agree that many of your peers have not. Perhaps you may browse the content of this and other TBs. Clinton's take in 1992 was 43%. He had a mandate. Clinton's take in 1996 was 49%. He had a mandate. Bush's take in 2004 was 51%. And yet (likely) you and others expect us to believe he *DOES NOT* have a mandate. Odd for folks who have 'moved on', yes?

Indeed. Please explain 'The Passion' then, or anything else of its ilk. It was not art by your definition, yet I would fail to define it as anything else. -- "This place isn't for your kind." Yet another telling pearl of wisdom from the party of tolerance.

  • The most number of complaints were from the Kazakh embassy in the UK as far as we had heard until now.

I think that might have actually been the most number of complaints about any of the characters Cohen does.

While I can't necessarily condone people who move out of America and continue to criticize it, I CAN say I believe anyone who has a sense of pride in what America has accomplished in this world has EVERY right to complain about the mistakes and problems we have... these things can be corrected, but unfortunately we obviously have a very deep rift between what we believe should be done and what would be right... but obviously both sides should be able to try to cling to some small shred of objectivity enough so that they can see that people who complain about America do not "hate" it... they merely wish it to live up to the promise of its past...

I think there are FEWER conservatives doing creative art than there are liberals... I don't presume to know why this is, but even the conservatives acknowledge this when they talk about "the liberals in Hollywood" or the "Hollywood liberal elite" we always hear about that banded behind Clinton and later Kerry... I myself play in some five or six bands here in Houston, and know MANY more, and of all of those, the liberals outnumber conservatives by at least a factor of ten... even "The Passion of the Christ" was really a retelling of an already established story, so it can't really be called "creative art" like a more original story might be... of course, I know, in Hollywood there are DANGEROUSLY few original stories left, so let's say old ideas in creative dressing? New ways of telling old stories? I don't know, anyway, my point basically is that for whatever reason, I do believe the Left has more of the creative minds... again, some of you jumped on IK for saying that, but I think it was because of two major reasons: (1) there is the concept that there are NO creative artists on the Right, and that's not what I'm saying... I'm saying there are, but they are outnumbered significantly by those on the Left... and (2) there was a presumption of there being some REASON for why there are more creative artists on the Left than the Right... I myself would say I know of no such reason... I'm not judging anyone who calls him/herself "conservative" to automatically be uncreative, I'm simply saying there seem to be, statistically and from my own experience, fewer creative conservative than creative liberal artists... just my opinion...
