Our First Review Of THE RING 2 From San Diego!!

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I think this is the first reaction I’ve seen so far to the upcoming RING 2, and it seems fairly positive. With the news hitting today that Sony’s making a GRUDGE sequel, it sounds like Japanese horror fever has officially hit overdrive here in the States, which makes me wonder... if all of their directors are coming here to make horror films now, who’s going to be making the films we’re remaking in five years?

Dear Lord of Geeks,

Not sure if someone else already chimed in on this one or not, but I managed to sneak into one of the local theater here in San Diego, and finagle a ticket to The Ring 2. If the review is a little odd, well I have had some cocktails after the movie and everyone can blame the booze.

This was a rough working cut of the film that we got to see, and they prefaced that many of the effects were not done yet, and that there were other issues such as sound, much etc, that had not quiet gotten to the polishing stage yet, they said that we were some of the first people to get a look at the film, and I have to say security was pretty tight with lots of studio folks hanging around, and the obligatory security folks with night vision goggles on etc. The odd thing was there were really searching for digital cameras and cameras phones, and when I took our my PDA Treo 600 phone and showed it to them, I guess it was so nerdy looking they just glossed over the fact that there is a camera in the back of the thing and passed me right on through.

All in all I think the movie was Pretty Good, it basically picks up after a year or so from the last film. We now find Naomi Watts character Rachel Keller moving with her son Aidan (David Dorfman) going to Astoria to start a new life as a newspaper editor at a local paper, but as you can guess, the little girl on the tape is back for a little revenge.

While I won’t go into a play by play of the movie so as not to ruin it for everyone, I can say that if you dug The Ring, there is a good chance your going to like this one for pure creep out factor. Although not as unnerving as the first one since this is more of the same type of creep style but this one still has many surprises and continues the story of Samara.

If you remember when Rachel and Aidan made that last copy of the tape in the previous movie that over time it has now propagated from person to person, each copying it and passing a new copy along, all along she is in search of them both. It becomes evident that the spirit of Samara is trying to find them both, and rather than seek revenge she wants to live again through the boy via everyone’s favorite horror plot tool - Possession.

Some memorable scenes that come to mind are when their car gets attacked by a large group of deer. Sounds kinda lame I know, but just seeing that many deer behaving that way to the them semi-possessed Aidan was pretty creepy.

There was also the scene where Aidan is sitting in the bathtub and all of the water in the tub/room is flowing upwards and away from him (evidently Samara doesn’t like water, go figure), the CG here is really fucking nice.

Then what has to be the fucking most creepy thing I have seen in a long time with Samera climbing up through the well chasing Rachel to the top. The way she moves is that weird ass herky jerky style of movement, but also add in some creepy ass crab-like motions that really freaked people out, my section of the theater at this point was throwing their popcorn around like little girls.

I got the impression that the director might have wanted to use more of the disturbing imagery in this one and just got clamed down on by the machine of Hollywood. However, there were some aspects that harkened back to the original that really got the hair on my arm sticking up.

Over all I would give it a B+ / A- and strongly recommend NOT to take any drugs before going in to see this flick.

If you use this you can call me “Our Man in Amsterdam”.

I know I remember that scene with Samara chasing a character up the walls of the well from one of the earlier sequels, but it sounds like for the most part, they’ve left behind the stuff we’ve already seen and are creating their own storyline now. Interesting... and we only have to wait until mid-March to get a look at it.

"Moriarty" out.

    Remakes

    by Vishnu

I absolutely detest all the remakes of Asian horror classics that have become so fashionable in American cinema. Is America really that devoid of ideas that they have to plunder and rape the unique beauty that is Asian cinema. Ring one was bloody Sacrilegious, a pale silicon implant compared to the juicy natural bossom of the orignal. The Grudge made me want to kill and I cried for hours when I heard that my favorite Dark Water was to be molested repackaged and frankly ruined for a western audience. Don't bother....watch the originals and don't let the bastard paint over the Mona Lisa time and time again to make a buck.

Was this a review of the film or a review of the trailer?

    by Mr. Profit

Because everything he referenced is in the trailer along with the bit about Samara trying to live through Aidan.

    by Mr. Profit

Had the remake used the ending from the original, it would have been better. Watching the original, it's indeed darker than the remake. And in the remake I dont recall learning why the ghost made that noise. But in the original you learn she was choked out by her husband.

    Best part of Ring 2

    by Lizzybeth

(Japanese version) It's a small thing, but it really creeped me out when the guy is analyzing the videotape of the girl in the asylum and it starts jerking around and it won't stop playing and the girl in the tape turns into Samara. The way they did it was great. I used to have nightmares just like that when I was a kid (the tape won't stop and monster comes out and eats you) and it got to me in a quiet sort of way. The American version of the first one kind of lacks these smaller scares and I hope they can put a little more of that into the second flick.

How are these tapes still watchable???

    by LoneChicken

They're freakin' video tapes! Play them a few times and the tape degrades more and more each time. Make copies of them and the copies start out with lower quality than the original. Naomi Watts's character should just let things be and eventually these tapes will be unwatchable on their own and Samera will be foiled by old VHS technology.

    Shrink and Lone Chicken

    by Oompa_Radar

Lone Chicken: Your point was really excellent about VHS degradation!! Shrink: With all due respect, it is just as pretentious to assume that your *OPINION* on this subjective matter is somehow less pretentious than those who think the originals are better.

  • Jan. 14, 2005, 11:02 a.m. CST

I see what he means by pretentious.

    by I Dunno

It's like those people who hear a cover of a song and scoff because they think they're the only ones who's heard the original. That's especially true of the Ring, since the original was foreign and not well known outside film geekdom. Plus art house movie peoples' disdain for Hollywood (and they're not always wrong).

  • Jan. 14, 2005, 11:22 a.m. CST

    video tape degradation

    by Fuzzyjefe

would not necessarily take place, since there is a supernatural cause. Samara's video is a virus from beyond, after all, and viruses don't necessarily get weaker as they are passed on. That's how I choose to look at it. How many times has anyone been able to pause a picture and pull a fly out of the screen? And just to throw out my 2 cents, I liked both versions just fine. The original had a rawness to it that helped add to the creep factor, and the remake was a nice, slow build until the end.

    Holding a grudge

    by BillEmic

I have to say that I thought the American remake of "The Grudge" was absolutely terrible with some of the worst pacing I've ever seen in a horror film. Overall, I'm cautiously anticipating "The Ring 2"...I didn't really care for the trailer - it looks like this is just a repeat of the first film's scenrio. Has anything really changed? The ghost is still after Watts and her son. Also, I didn't think "Ringu 2" was that bad. It had its creepy and stylish moments.

    by StigMata

Roll your eyes or pin me to a tree but I'd really like to see more wuxia films redone as westerns. Specifically Zatoichi, Hero, and House of Flying Daggers. Don't know if the fantasy element would translate, but the rest of the Shakespearean elements could easily play out. It was done with Kurosawa's work and it could be done with the newer films and one of the hottest American directors just so happens to be Clint Eastwood. Think of how masterfully he handled Unforgiven. Whoa, I've just convinced myself.

  • Jan. 14, 2005, 2:49 p.m. CST

    Great idea, Stigmata

    by BillEmic

I actually think some of those samurai/wuxia films could translate well to a Western, especially Zatoichi. He wouldn't want to watch a film about a wandering, blind gun-slinger? Okay, at least I'd love to see it...

Who cares if it's a foreign film it doesn't make you look any smarter when you say it's better then the American remake. The Ring was much, much better in every way. Solid horror film.

    I'm still worried about Watts.

    by Oompa_Radar

An otherwise great actress, she was my only complaint about The Ring. I don't know what she was thinking or what direction she got, but her character was annoying and completely unsympathetic. I wanted her dead, and quickly. I enjoyed BOTH The Ring and Ringu in different ways, I just hope Naomi Watts' true acting ability overtakes whatever wild hair was up her ass in the The Ring.

  • Jan. 14, 2005, 8:56 p.m. CST

Ring was better than Ringu... sorry Asian lovers

    by Mako

I really liked Ringu when I saw it years before the American Remake. But THE RING is just a better film all around. And that's rare. There's so much backlash against remaking Asian films... and I agree that a majority of the time... the originals are far better. Even going back to SEVEN SAMUARI/THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. But THE RING is an exception. Gore Verbinski and his gang, took a good movie, and made it great.

Did the reviewer actually see the film or is he or she pulling our dicks? What was described sounds exactly like the trailer for the film, shot for shot! Maybe I'm wrong, but there was nothing substantial to the review, other than the same shit I saw last week on this site. Hmm...

    by DukeDeMondo

Which is never a bad thing, all being told. I quite enjoyed The Ring, it was certainly a fuck of a lot better than Ring 2, or Spiral, or indeed Ring 0. Who knows what this one'll be like. As to Harry's worry's about who'll be directing the flicks we remake in five years time, thing is, seems to be that the directors head back to Asia to make flicks too, rather than just hanging around hollywood. Still, i'd rather see some new ideas rather than just a rehash of my favourtie scenes, ie, the grudge. This sounds to be heading in a different direction, sort of (wasn't ring 2 about possession as well, kinda, with the whole hoopla about the swimming pool and such?), which can only be a good thing. Pretentious

    by Vishnu

I don't think it is pretentious to be passionate about the movies that you love and to be disappointed or even angry when someone remakes it for commercial purposes. I can see no artistic merit in remaking something that has already been made. I'd just rather see something original, even if it sucks, at least someone has made the effort to write it and develop it. And for the record I hate cover bands and cover versions too. If I wanna hear a Stevie Wonder song, why the hell would I want to hear anyone but Stevie singing it....and don't give me the alternative interpretation argument either, how can someone interpret something that has come directly from anothers Psyche? That's pretentious...perhaps Hitchcock meant to say....perhaps Kurosawa really meant....I don't think so. As for Ring being better, a small child with an a-z of horror could have made that, formulaic, passionless, souless reproduction of a modern classic that missed the whole point of the original, by a mile!! Or is that kilometer

    U.S. Remakes... Zatoichi

    by lucreangst

Zatoichi was remade by Hollywood.... it was called Blind Fury and starred Rutger Hauer. And you want more of this?! The final scare scene in "Ringu" was much better than the overblown CGI crap they used in the remake. Besides, the only great supernatural thriller/horror film to come out of Japan in recent years is Pulse by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. His films are way ahead of the others.
