Guess What Frenchman They've Cast In THE DA VINCI CODE'!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Yeah, yeah. It’s Jean Reno.
Was there ever any doubt?
Because remember... there is only one French actor in the whole world. Sure, he’s enormously talented, but does this strike anyone else as incredibly lazy casting?
"Moriarty" out.

jean reno... again?

Well, better luck next time.

... but he kind of disappeared in the last few years.

A book? With text? No funny pictures? Get the fcuk outta here ... that's so 19th century

with shit theories that had been lond discredited before the book was written.

(Spoilage!)Read it last summer... drop the albino monk. Not the character mind you just how he's portrayed. The other characters are fine. Considering none of the nag hammadi scrolls which contained many rejected gospels didnt mentionned jesus being married id make the ending a bit more interesting. We know that the jews of the time expected a davidic messiah and seriously took into account genealogy. What if Christ died before he got married and was able to 'inherit' the throne as some probably would have liked (Im guessing Judas and maybe Peter too wanted Jesus to get on with becoming King already) and what if some of the early Church indeed sought another individual in line for the throne of Israel. James the brother of Jesus maybe? That'd be a cool aspect for the story to twist on over the novel... Id think Jesus' whole family was probably deemed divine to a point by his followers...
-
Jean Reno's quest for a decent cup od coffee was the only cool bit about GODZILLA'S YANKEE VACATION. Just to show you how cool this guy can be.
-
They should cast Jean Gabin. I don't care if he's dead, I would still blow him.
-
Is bullshit, they should do it like this......
Langdon: Clooney/Jackman/Crowe
Neveu: Sophie Marceau/Audrey Tatou
Bezu Fache: Tcheky Karyo
Remi: Jean Reno/Vincent Cassel
Teabing: Jim Broadbent
Aringarosa: Javier Bardem
Sauniere: Giancarlo Giannini/Jean Rochefort -
Cassel is only famous for being married to Bellucci. Depardieu disappearing? His gut certainly hasn't. Reno is the best choice, he is just too cool, look at Leon.
-
Could have got Kevin Kline or something. Though I don't see what the complaint is really, Reno is awesome, and we don't see him in nearly enough movies.
-
LANGDON: Tom Hanks, so no use arguing. NEVEU: Julie Delphie/Audrey Tatou. TEABING: Stephen Fry. TEABING BUTLER: Richard E. Grant/Hugh Laurie/John Hurt.ALBINO: John Malkovich/Michael Wincott/David Thewlis. SAUNIERE: Alain Delon/Charles Aznavour/Jean Paul Belmondo. BANK MANAGER: Gerard Depardiew (a nice cameo). ARINGAROSA: Omar Sharif/Edward James Olmos.

by 007-11
Predictable, but good. Unlike Tom Hanks being cast as Robert Langdon.
-
Yea, he was born in Turkey, but grew up & studied in France, and is generally considered a "French" actor. Having said that? I'm all for Jean Reno for this role. I'm all for Sophie Marceau for the female lead, as well.
-
The only person that can play Langon (that has been part of the Ron Howard previous movie repertoire)is The Batman . . . Michael Keaton. Anyone who disagrees is as stupid as Harry is fat.
-
I'll file this under "Jean Reno needs a paycheck" right next to Godzilla and The Pink Panther. I love the guy and frankly, he should get paid just so he can play good parts in smaller movies.
-
Just like every movie after Leon... Like godzilla or something.
-
What's the big deal? So Reno has been cast of ONE of the French cast. In case most of you don't realize, a far portion of the book/movie takes place in France and there are roles for many other French actors, perhaps not as large as Bezu Fache, but he does fit the part fairly well. But, please, please, please... no Audrey Tautau!!

ALL the events of this book taking place within 24hrs? Please... If only Dan Brown would put as much effort into his plot as he plainly does into his research, the book WOULD have been the new "bible"... Look how succesful it is already... Afterall the Bible is nothing more than words written on papyrus by a man, (or at least several men)... WHY should THAT be any more believable than THIS book? Because people have said it's so for about 2000 years? Yeah, that's "proof"... Cheers.
-
It's a quick, engaging read and might have made an OK mini-series, but it's based on wank, the whole thing. And dated wank, at that. Anybody remember some specious spew called "The Holy Blood & The Holy Grail" about 20 or so years ago? Black cover, big bold red type. All that "Immaculately researched" toss was in there: how "san greal" (holy grail) was actually confused for "sang real", French for royal bloodline and there were secret gospels that showed that Our Lord might not have kept it in his boxers, but been hitched accordingly and sired an heir and down the years the Knights Templar had covered it up and Jesus' bloodline went through the Merovingian kings and his natural descendant was Baron de Knob-fromage or something living somewhere near Paris and oh I'm getting a headache just thinking about it all again. But that's nothing compared to the migraines that Tom Hanks' perfromances induce.
-
I'm still trying to figure out whether casting Hanks was a strategic work of genius. When this film comes out, I'm guessing there's going to be a fair amount of religious protest for a Hollywood movie, possibly like "Last Temptation of Christ". To the producer's credit, it'll be hard for the Pope to sell the movie as "evil and blasphemous" when it stars the adorable Forest Gump directed by Opie.

...when I read the novel, I pictured Depardieu. What about Sophie? I say bring back IRENE JACOB, of Krzysztof Kieslowski fame. She's awesome, and under-used. Julie Delpy is a good choice, too -- but maybe a bit obvious. Nevertheless, DaVinci Code as a novel is way over-hyped. It has some interesting story beats, but it's pretty poorly written. I bet the movie could actually improve upon the source material.
-
Sophie Marceau is the perfect Neveu.

...only a complete asshole would not cast Jean Reno. I'd watch that big goofy bastard in anything.

For the last 2000 years people have been debating these issues. There have been entire sects of Christianity devoted to variations on these themes. None of these things ever have been, nor likely can be resolved. The Catholic Church has worked hard at covering all of this up because it threatens their authority and that is historical FACT. They murdered the Templars for beliefs such as this and that is also historical FACT. So all of you idiots hanging off the teet of the Pope, you better take your blinders off. There is something to all of this, I don't know what, but people need to stop dismissing it outright just because it makes them uncomfortable and their Priest told them to. If your faith is so weak that it cannot stand a little scrutiny then I would suggest your faith is worthless and you are a mindless sheep.
-
I'm so bored. Ron Howard directing Tom Hanks. Good for insomnia.
-
IT'S JEAN RENO! They could cast him in everything for all I care.
-
like has already been said. Total yawn. Go get stuck in a Terminal again.

And I'm not even Catholic, or religious for that matter lol. It doesn't make it fact just because you used the CAPS LOCK button moron.
-
BurlIvesLeftNut made me laugh. Jean Gabin was awesome though.

It's amazing how so many people (perhaps like HairyNutsack) think Catholics are unthinking pawns of priests and the Pope. First of all, as a practicing Catholic, let me tell you I know of no one among us who takes the Pope's authority all that seriously -- especially here in America. And yes, Rome was a huge force behind the Crusades, cover-ups, and plenty of other morally reprehensible things -- most of which were hundreds of years ago. Get over it. Different place, different time, and a lot of water under the bridge. Also, for the record, the majority of clergy I know are uncommonly good people. Of course, a few (the ones you hear about) can be pricks -- but so can any religious leader who abuses their power. And for the record, every Catholic I know believes priests should be allowed to marry, and women should be allowed in the priesthood. What I'm trying to say is being Catholic doesn't automatically put one in a religious straitjacket. We're as diverse and freethinking as anyone else. The anti-Catholic bias that pervades our society just shows that a little knowledge -- if not a dangerous thing in this case -- is at least highly unfair.

the ending of this book made me spew out my coffee. Francois Mitterand????! the secret they've been hiding all these years, risking their lives for this is .... say what? the ending sort of makes you realize that the whole thing was an illusion, right? and JEAN RENO, or ENZO, is a man god. nuff said. if you cast him, you can't fail. but he will always be enzo.
-
'tain't read the book though, and I do have to admit that I like Reno as an actor (although I haven't been exposed to many French actors besides for Gerard Depardieu and that dude from the Matrix sequels). So yeah, I'd say it is. But from an outsider's perspective, I'd say that's how things work most of the time in Hollywood anyway, so this is nothing to get worked up over.
-
Does anyone else here yawn at the thought of Ron Howard directing this film? I mean, he's... a moderately good director, I suppose. In my opinion, his work is obvious and uninspired, despite the fact "A Beautiful Mind" won Best Film a few years ago. Nothing he does ever makes me sit up and take notice. As a result, I'm certain this film will do well at the box office, but a year after its release people look back and will hate it. Just like all his other uninspired, hackneyed crap.
-
That's the more important question. And even more important: Who's going to be the most INTERESTING and entertaining character: Leigh Teabing? The other characters are non-spectacular, emotional mudpuddles; Leigh Teabing owns them.
Also, the Da Vinci Code reminds me of Star Trek: the main characters all have the damn answers and do all the right things at the right times. How are they going to make a boring book into a good movie? -
I'm aware that many Catholics think for themselves. Kudos. What boggles my mind is that so many folks who think for themselves still give lip service to an authoritarian institution they have so many disagreements with. I'm amazed more of you don't simply walk away, if you really don't need 'em to do your thinking for you. No offense intended, just commenting.
-
And his parents are Spanish. The guy didn't move to France until he was an adult. So can somebody explain to me how it is that he's considered French? And really know, Jean Reno is much too cool to be from a country populated by beret wearing jackasses...

What a brilliant reply Havoc. You sure destroyed my argument by pointing out I used the capital letters. Never mind that what I said was 100% true, yeah I'm the idiot. Add something to the conversation next time dumbass, and maybe try and post your little mindless thoughts into one post next time instead of three small ones. Friggin waste of bandwidth.

I promise you O that I am not speaking out of ignorance. My wife works for the Los Angeles County Archdiocese, my brother-in-law is a Priest, my mother-in-law works for the San Bernadino County Archdiocese, my father-in-law is a Deacon. I witness the outright hypocrisy that goes on in the Rome Church on a near daily basis. I'd just like to add some things to Jeff Dee's great post, if Catholics aren't mindless sheep then why is it that you accept the Pope telling you that child molestation is an internal matter for the church? Why is it you condone these acts of molestation by allowing your Bishops to withhold vital evidence from the Police? Why is it you accept many doctrines and rituals that are contrary to the Bible, your self-proclaimed Holy Book Word of God?

by frankdrebin
The one thing that bothered me about the book wasn't the average writing or religious controversy, it was that he made the villain an albino. It reminded me of all those facist Ian Fleming novels, where the every villain had a physical abnormality of some kind. In movies too, except for Beauty & The Beast, beautiful=good, flawed=evil. Edgar & Johnny Winter must be spinning in their graves.
-
I appreciate your responses, and I feel like perhaps I didn't state my case clearly enough (it's hard to elaborate on anything in this goddamn skinny TalkBack window!). Jeff, you pointed out that you're "amazed more of you don't simply walk away, if you really don't need 'em to do your thinking for you." If anyone needs an institution to do the thinking for them, they have serious issues. Just because I'm an American doesn't mean I don't have a lot of problems with our government and our history -- but I'm not going to pack up and leave over it. If I believe in the fundamantals of something, I try to live by them. And if those fundamentals get corrupted by an institution like Rome, it doesn't change my basic beliefs as a Catholic. They're not inextricably linked. Frankly, for me and lots of other Catholics (especially in my generation), our attitude is: who gives a shit about the Vatican? We get the poetry beyond the prose -- who needs some far-away old codgers in Rome to muck things up? ........ And to HairyNutsack: what in my post would ever make you say that I "accept the Pope telling you that child molestation is an internal matter for the church? [or] Condone these acts of molestation by allowing your Bishops to withhold vital evidence from the Police?" My main point is that I don't accept it. It should not be an internal Church matter; those fuckers should be prosecuted by the law. My wife was a teacher in the LA Archdiocese for years -- I've heard about of some of the bullshit that goes on. I'm not about to swear my allegiance to them, or Rome. Ever. At the same time, I can appreciate there are also many, many people in the organization who try hard and actually succeed in doing a lot of good. As with anything, when it comes to the vast realm of Catholicism, you have to see the forest for the trees.

Reno doesn't REALLY need the money. He starred in THE VISITORS, which I think is still the highest-grossing French film ever made (and was remade as JUST VISITING).
-
Reno may not NEED the money per se. It's more that he deserves a big paycheck every once in awhile for all the great stuff he has done for film fans. When you thik about it actors don't really know where or when they might get a job and have a tendency to take whatever. But money can help them be choosier.
-
No you didn't say in your post that you condone these horrible acts, but as long as the people who call themselves Cathoilc allow their clergy to make the decisions they've been making then what else are we supposed to believe? Seriously, Rome makes those vile proclamtions and what was the response? There was a small one, but where is it now? Where's the protests? Where's the constant outcry that SHOULD be being made? People went right back to their daily lives and took it in the ass from Rome. Because after all, when the Pope sits on his Holy Throne and makes proclamations then he is the mouthpiece of God and everything he says is coming directly from God. So the only logical conclusion is that God is a bastard and wants Priests to rape children, and Cathoilcs are fine with this. If it happened to my kid I'd kill the Priest that did it, not take a fucking bribe from the Church. It's disgusting.
-
Obviously, you can't have a rational discussion. "A fucking bribe from the Church?" Who --millions of everyday Catholics? You've gone from critic to hateful paranoiac -- and proved one of my initial points along the way. I suppose I shouldn't have expected much, given your chosen username.

Reno in Ronin kicked ass.

Call me names if you must, but at least address what I wrote. How can you possibly be unaware of the millions and millions of dollars in settlements that the Church has given to people worldwide? I thought I was in a discussion with someone who claimed to be informed and not a mindless sheep, was I wrong? Am I hateful and paranoid? I hate any and all religious institutions that place itself above its followers. The Cathoilc Church is not more important than the young lives that have been destroyed by its leaders. The Vatican should be burnt to the ground by its followers before they allow the Church to continue to cover up the evil within. Children are more important than the Church, if that makes me a hateful paranoid then so be it. If you think the Church is more important than children then there's something wrong with you.
