That 20 Seconds Of FANTASTIC FOUR Footage Is Online... For Now!!

Published at:  Jan 14, 2005 6:15:43 AM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Okay, I know... I know... we’re all supposed to hate FANTASTIC FOUR sight unseen. Or at least, that’s the way it looks based on the talkbacks yesterday. I’ll admit that I’m very skeptical, but it’s not a knee-jerk thing. I’ve got a lot of problems with the characterization in the script I read, and I think there are some production design things that are just maddening. Having said that... are you really rooting for them to fail? I mean, it’s the FANTASTIC FOUR. This is one of the crown gems of the Marvel universe. Can’t we all just cross our fingers and hope that they’re going to pull it off?

The trailer’s in theaters today, but for now, there’s a snippet of it online that MTV ran yesterday:

Hey,

Scott (and Dave) here again from Internapse with a huge exclusive... maybe not as big as the Star Wars trailer, but if you're a comic book geek like me.. then it may be equal to it.

Internapse's sister site, located at Fantastic411, run by a friend of mine and myself, just posted the 20 seconds of footage that ran on TRL on Thursday.

It's awesome.. and let's just hope the server holds up.

:)

~Scott & Dave

Thanks, guys. Let’s see how long it takes to break that server’s back, eh?

"Moriarty" out.

    by burlivesleftnut

But seeing the thing in action now, I have to agree. He looks dumb, which pisses me off because he is one of my favorite characters in all of comics. They should have forked out the budget to do him all CGI, like the Hulk. Oh well... maybe Chiklis' performance will grow on me. The rest looks like typical fantastic four kind of stuff. Still can't wait to see it. Although, why is Johnny on a fucking dirt bike? Do the junior rednecks of southeastern Oklahoma really need a super hero role model or something? It reminds me of the over the top wrestling scene in Spider-Man.

ignore the "i am fat/have a small penis and have anger issues" crowd. it looks great. FF has always been a big sci fi eye candy fest, whether fighting dr doom or exploring the negative zone, it was about looking great and the footage here does. johnny on a mt bike makes sense since he is a hotshot and is likely using his new fame to meet girls.

Also, for the guy who said they shoulda CGI'd the Thing....why is it that HULK gets shit for being CGI, and HELLBOY gets praise for being makeup. So I don't see how it means anything about how good this film is. (I won't say successful, because being successful and being good are two different things). ...that this won't suck. I love the characters, the casting isn't awful and Marvel has done right by us in the past, so I'm hopeful for this one (unlike Star Wars, we're Luca$ has bitch slapped us so often that I'm almost hoping that this last one is a critical AND commercial failure). Still...the dicking around with Doom's basic origin and backstory...I dunno. It's sort of like being presented with a really good looking call girl who you know for a fact has the clap. You know it will ultimately lead to a painful experience, but you just can't resist getting in there anyway...

  • I, for one, always said the "HULK" should be CGI ... and considering today's technology, I think they did an oUTStaNDing job of computer animating the Hulk. Most of the Hulk scenes, in my opinion, turned out great. (And I'm VERY MUCH looking forward to "HULK 2") -- This "FANTASTIC FOUR" movie just doesn't generate much excitement because it isn't pushing the effects ... in terms of what is possible today. Has anyone seen anything (so far) of this film that wasn't possible in 1989???

I'm not even a huge FF groupie or whatever that fandom calls itself...but I know enough about the FF to feel this is not all a movie about them could have been. I know how fickle internet fandom is however, and predictably enough Moriarty was able to rally up some contrarians to backlash against the previous talkback which was overwhelmingly negative. Overreaction is nothing new here, so I guess anything to try and balance the scale is understandable. But still, this doesn't look very interesting to me.

In defense of Tim Story regarding "Taxi"

    by barry egan

There are only so many directing gigs out there, right? They're like NFL head coaching positions. When you're offered them you take them. Why would anybody want the Raiders' job as long as Al Davis is still alive? The answer: there are only so many of those positions. What new director would turn down a chance to make a studio picture, regardless of the script and stars attached? We all know that studios frequently have stars in place on a project before a director is hired. Is it, therefore, possible that Tim Story made the best possible film from the "Taxi" script the studio liked with Fallon and Latifa, who were clearly the stars the studio wanted? I contend that "Barbershop" is a fine film and I really do want to see FF work. So I am rooting for Tim Story and I hope he schocks the world.

I just went and looked at the footage and before it, I was not too enthused by most of what I was hearing. I thought the casting was pretty good, except for Jessica Alba. I liked Ioan Gruffod's Horatio Hornblower and thought he'd make a great Reed Richards, but hiring Tim Story did not exude confidence and the script things I've been reading do not inspire, either. That said, I went to look at the footage expecting the worse and did not see the worse. I think they ought to spend a lot more time on the Human Torch efx and take the rest up a level, but it didn't look bad. I would like this film to work and this footage didn't turn me off.

    by odysseus

After my cynical post yesterday, I have to say the footage looks better than I expected. Personally, I prefer the "rocky-looking" Thing over the Kirby-esque "mushy-looking" Thing, but who knows -- maybe the movie version will evolve like the comic version did. Let's just hope they fixed those widely-rumored script problems along the way. Remember, folks: X-MEN looked lame before its premiere, as well. Maybe the whole of FF will be greater than the sum of its parts.

The Incredibles has set the visual bar waaaaay too high for this low-budget Vancouver filmed project. I'm sure it will still be an average to good comic book adaptation (much like Elektra is) that will fail to blow anyone away. It's the pandering for a PG-13 rating that is killing these projects. I wish the writers and producers of these films would let go and allow for kick ass scripts/production and let the ratings chips fall where they may.

Did anyone else notice that it was courtesy of New Line Cinema? I thought it was being done by 20th Century Fox? Is New Line owned by Fox? or vice versa? As for my impressions it looked like a work in progress, far from done. I think most people can tell they're just trying to get the word of mouth thing going on it. If no one remembers X-Men did the same thing, the shouwed some of the end fight with wolverine and Sabertooth that was greatly changed in the final product with a flashier fx sequence. the first teaser was quickly chopped together so you didn't get a real good look at anything. My verdict is: Too early to say. Don't get me wrong, I don't have alotta hope for this flick. I think the casting for the characters was pretty off, although I could stare a Jessica Alba in skin tight spandex all day. I think they went the wrong way with The Thing, I think he needed to be a computer generated effect, or at least had the costume more closely resember what he has evolved to in the comics, then use forced perspective to make him appear bigger or something. He looks ok in the make-up, just not what I've come to know as the thing. I think though the Thing is going to be probably the best part of the movie, simply because Michael Chilkis seems more hyped about the movie than anyone else involved. He seems to have the energy for the project and I'd be surprised if his performance is lacking. As for Doom? That's a hard nut to crack, a guy in an armored suit with tons of techno gadgets and magic. Translating that to the screen, and making it easy to swallow, would be difficult. They're obviously moviing in the direction of the Ultimate Comics line when translating these films. I personally love Ultimate Fantastic Four, I can only hope the movie has the chemstry of character that the comic does.

Looks pretty damn good to me. Someone mentioned in a post above "low-budget Vancouver film". Holy shit, I wish I could get a "low budget" of $150 Mill!! When did a figure like that become nothing? I don't think it has yet!

As for The Thing, well.....it was always going to be a case of "damned if I do, damned if I dont" for the director/studio. People would have pissed and moaned if he was CG, and now people are pissing and moaning that he's a makeup effect. He looks like the Thing to me, as long as the performance is good, then it will be fine. As for the lack of a massive brow....Boo hoo, who cares, there's always room for improved character design.

Anyhoo, it looks cool, The Human Torch effects look spot on, Reed Richards (who has the crappest name in comic book history by the way...Mr Fantastic!?!...C'mon!) looks perfect and Jessica Alba is hot.

From that 20 seconds, it looks like a Fantastic 4 film to me, isn't that what they're making? By the way it's cool to hear so many positive posts on this film, way to keep an open mind fellas.

    by homer sexual

I must say that I am not fat, nor do I have a small penis. I may have anger issues, though. But underendowed fat guys have the same rights as anyone else regardless.
Pro: Acceptable effects, actors at least LOOK alright. Appears to have plenty of action. Plus, Julian McMahon is da bomb! I wish I were him! He is perfectly cast, though he is the only one.
Con: Jessica Alba is a terrible actress. Just the worst! Effects seem decent but not dazzling. The actor playing Johnny looks too old to be Sue's younger brother.
Overall, not as bad as I'd feared but not exactly X2, either.

    by empyreal0

It doesn't LOOK bad. It looks kinda flashy, the effects seem good enough, the characters look as though they've been slightly reimagined to cater to a more mainstream audience, Doom's lightning effect looks pretty sweet... all in all, it's easy on the eyes. That doesn't mean I'm not squeamish about the whole 5 astronauts thing. Whoever ruled that the villain's MUST be tied into the origin of the heroes, or even worse, must conform to the whole "you are I are very much alike" bullshit cliche, NEEDS to be shot repeatedly. It's the studios that demand shit like this because they rely on studies that measure the lowest common denominator of the American public and cater to it. But hey - the FX guys they paid aren't too bad.

Looked Good To Me, but could be much better, and the reason i sa

    by the founder

When a studio has the balls to shell out the proper budget and get a good director with vision, also add in a screenwriter with a nack for this such material, then we'll get a winner that'll rivel The Incrediables but in live action. If the budget for the FF is true at a 150 million, then they had a lot of money to make visually exciting movie, because the cast is cheap. I think the cast is fine, but the problem may be both the director and the screenwriter. If the imagination isn't there, these guys are going to rehash things we've already seen before. taking shyt from other comic movies. I can say for a 100 percent certain that both Tim Story and the writer doesn't have the imagination for a project like the F4. it was the same with the Xmen, but singer did do a good job of the getting the characters on par with their live action counterparts. pretty much everyone felt like who they are in the comics. I still say FOX should have shelled out the cash for a good dirctor. Cameron would've been good cause he would've made the fx top motch and ground breaking, but he's a lil to pricy, but it wouldn't have mattered, i say shell out the 20 million for his pay. If not cmaeron, then I would've gone with Luc Besson. his work on the 5th element was visually stunning, and i was wowed by it. The FF will probably be entertaining, but it's not going to raise the bar in any way possiable. Nothing is going to blow us away fx and visual wise, so here's hoping they at least got an interesting story.

not with me, for I am a purist to the extreme. The journey is more important than the destination for me. But after seeing several snipets
for this film, I'm quite certain it will do well. Even with FF fans. Just like they did with the X-men, they will adopt this movie as the new face of the Fantastic Four. The movie will be "cool" enough to warrant the various adjustments to the characters and their histories. It will be considered a neccessary compromise, (like the X-men) to bring these characters to life. Congratulations Avi Arad, looks like you've got another hit on your hands.

Could it be that it's because that kind of stuff is IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL!?!! Spider-Man's very first adventure had him dressing up in a mask to wrestle someone for some spending cash...just like in the movie. Johnny Storm has ALWAYS been racing enthusiast. Usually it was race cars, but changing that to motocross is fine with me. It would also look pretty neat visually if he flamed-on while riding and left a trail of fire behind him. That would be kinda hard to do in a car.******************************As for everything else in the movie, the only thing about the story I really don't like is Doom "growing" his armor as a power like Colossus, rather than creating it himself. That was always one of the big things about him was that he could come up with gadgets as cool as the ones Reed comes up with. As far as the visuals, everything looks excellent, although I have some reservations about the Thing suit. I can't tell very well from these, but he might end up being too rubbery/fleshy, which would be bad. If they didn't do it, they should have made the suit with individual hard (ceramic/plastic/etc) "rocks" attached to the suit, rather than being molded foam. That way each rocky plate would be solid, and the only flexing would be at the seams. But, hey, it's the same guys who did Hellboy's suit, and that was outstanding.

    by fernwick_

I can get the Johnny and racing stuff, I dont mind that. I dont mind the FF movie IDEA at all.
But its like most of the talkbackers said, they arent make the FF LOOK like the FF. If they can CGI the Hulk, they can CGI the Thing too. I can see several points that can be improved,
    1. I just read this and hope its not true, DO NOT LET DOOM "GROW" his armor, this is the stupidest thing I can imagine.
    2. CGI the Thing like they did the Hulk.
    3. They should have gotten Tim Robbins to play Reed, I have mentioned that before.
    4. Anyone else thing that Sue should have been played by a real blonde? For example Elisha Cuthbert? Wow, that I would go see.
    5. That Doom vs Sue thing looks like the Emperor attacking Luke just done again. Its pretty sad I think. Doom is a classy villain. A SUPER villain, classic and shouldnt be tampered with. I can even live with Spiderman having web glands or whatever, yes it make more sense, but this stuff looks like a BIG FAT B Movie and i have lost all enthusiasm for it. Any one else agree?

Why whine whenthe easy solution is to not see the movie when it comes out. Kinda simple huh!
As for the Doom growing a metal armour, so what. The Thing grew stones on his face, MR. F's skin stretch's, Sues skin disappears Johnny's bursts into flames. Haven't you idgits figured it out yet? This is just a big commercial for some super strength stridex acne medicine or for some dermal surgeon. Doom on paper is cool Doom in flesh is silly so I don't care what they do to him as long as he kicks the crap out of the FF at least once or twice. The scene of him hitting the Thing and the Thing flipping through the sky was great.

Saw the full FANTASTIC FOUR Teaser in front of Coach Carter

    by the founder

Let me start off by saying that Coach Carter was not shyt, like the reviewer that posted her said. Harry and his ilk keep their thumbs up their @ss to much. Coach carter was shyt, but Garden State was pure Gold?? Yeah right. At anyrate i saw the full F4 teaser in front of the Coach Carter movie(i guess its not exclusive to elektra)and it looked pretty good, and makes better sense as a whole as opposed to the 20 seconds of footage shown on MTV. Also Doom looks d@mn good. I still feel that the right creative team wasn't put together for this film, but despite that i think the F4 will be entertaining and make a decent amount on monet to warrent a sequel come summer.

I hope you see this, because I have grown to value your opinion. Look, I'm a fan. Suffice to say I have just a few ishes of the FF. And Barbershop has given me reason to appreciate Story as director of this film. That film proved to me that he 'gets' the family dynamic. IMO, the casting is all rawng, however. Going with the Ultimates retelling is bad formula. Example -- many apologists are explaining Ben's non-popular appearance (i.e. non-button nose, lack of unibrow, lumpy vs. rocky, etc.) as homage to Kirby's original telling. Two points. 1) The Ultimates had nothing to do with Kirby's vision, so dispense with the 'burn victim' sympathy, and 2) why isn't Doom a 'burn victim' himself? In fact, why do his 'burns' result in perfectly rivited rectangles around his eyes ala the comic book? Look -- I want this to succeed. I have faith in Story to represent a family's struggle. But if it looks like shit and smells like shit, then it may very well be shit.
