Hugh Laurie is going to be running a great metropolitan newspaper!

Published at:  Jan 13, 2005 2:49:51 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with some fascinating news about Bryan Singer's SUPERMAN film. He's gone and cast Hugh Laurie as Perry White. In the history of Perry White on screen, this is the most different physical look for Perry that he's ever had. Hugh has classic golden age looks, but though he has played the Paternal figure in STUART LITTLE, he isn't really the tough elder looking fellow that has typically played Perry White... But I think Hugh is going to really make the role his own. But damn, with the casting that Bryan has done so far - I have to say, I'd kill for this to be vintage. I mean everyone cast would be amazing in 40's suits. I'm actually curious about the visual direction that Bryan's giving this - the cast has a certain timeless look to them, as opposed to having very modern looks. We'll see though. I really have a positive feeling about this one.

    More casting

    by ashfett

On the news just now they also said James "Cyclops" Marsden is joining the cast as a romantic rival for Lois. I like Marsden but the poor guy keeps getting cast in the Bill Pullman love triangle role of the guy the audience is not rooting for. Alas.

Perry White needs to be older and more grizzled. Maybe Terence Stamp? Albert Finney? Brian Cox?

so I know he will pull it off, but this is still another choice that in my mind Singer has gotten wrong. In the sameway Spacing's casting is good it isn't the best. Also it means we will have to wait longer for the Fry and Laurie Sherlock Holmes.

I love the original Donner film, but I could never figure out WHY they cast Cooper (other than for the same reason--publicity-- that they threw in all those old-time stars as the Kryptonian elders).

And I'm a Hugh Laurie fan! No, not Stuart Little era, but a former viewer of A Bit of Fry and Laurie. What exactly about him suggests Perry White?! Zip. Nish. Nada. Squat. Additional words representing 'Nothing'. Could somebody mention to Bryan that he is allowed to cast people he hasn't worked with previously...? Much appreciated.

    by bart of darkness

since the days of "Alfresco" (early 80s sketch show with Stephen Fry, Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson etc.) and he's been utterly brilliant in a lot of stuff since then. But Perry White? Jackie Cooper was superb in the role, I only hope Hugh hasn't made a HUGE mistake.

    Perry White,Smerry White............

    by liljuniorbrown

He's the least of my problems with this.I understand using the original as a jumping off point because God knows there is very little to dislike about that movie and nobody needs to retell Supermans origin, but why cast people who would be better fit for the OC than metropolis. We need Superman to atleast look thirty ish with some height and damn muscles.Lois needs to look as old as Superman and Luthor needs to be a bad ass megalomanic super genuis,Clancy Brown would have kicked ass in that role, hell i would have prefered a bald Keifer Sutherland over a pale skinny ass kevin spacey.Superman is one of the only Superheros i got left, xmen ruled but again aside from Jackman who wasn't even first choice (Doug ray Scott?) the cast looked like Beverlyhills 90210 or saved by the bell.

  • I dig Hugh Laurie as much as I do other great Brit character actors, but for Perry White? Are you kidding me with this, Singer? Of course, considering that Steve Martin's name was being run up the flagpole there for a while, it doesn't surprise me that they would Bryan Singer & Co. would miss the mark with Perry. I mean, even Michael McKean will own the role more than Hugh Laurie ever will.

    Sweet..

    by purgatori

I think Bryan Singer has shown the man knows what he's doing by casting and directing some of the best comic book adaptations ever filmed. I also believe that Spacey is going to be a bad ass Lex Luthor. He's great evil, and needs to do it more.

Hugh Laurie has endeared himself to Singer by bringing to life one of the best characters in a while on TV with Greg House, who is as bitter and prickish as a man twice his age. He'll be a great Perry White.

And what the fuck with the hetero comments?? Shut the hell up.

To whoever said the direction of the movie is wrong...

    by jpdill

... you are correct. This will suck.

And it's not set in the 40s, simply based on the fact it's a sequel to Smallville, as well as a sequel to the other films.

It'll be set slightly in the future, and in a place in time which allows both Smallville and the other movies to have perfect continuity.

    by jumpstart

They could have the whole of Blackadder's cast come in (Rowan Atkinson as Luthor, Stephen Fry as Zod, good ol' Tony Robinson as Jimmy and Miranda Richardson as Lois...with, what the hell, Jim Broadbent as Supes)---I don't give a damn. I don't want another Superman movie. I appreciate the old ones and we don't need another one for a new friggin' generation. Let the new generation have ours, and if the stars of the movie aren't "hot" enough for 'em, can't sell teeny bopper magazines (or in the case of Hugh, his TV show), tell 'em to shove it. Tell 'em to get some friggin' heroes of their own and stop messing with ours.

Laurie could be pretty damn good... but he really doesn't matter

    by commando cody

Actually, this is one that I'll simply say "wait and see" on. Laurie's transformation from the father in STUART LITTLE to the prick of HOUSE was great. It took me a few to realize it was the same guy. In terms of acting chops and transforming himself yet again into Perry White, I think he could do just fine. Same with Bosworth, same with Spacey. But the bottom line on all of this STILL comes back to only ONE PERSON. If Singer fucked up and Mr. No-Name can't make us believe a man can fly, or looks out of place or physically underwhelming in that red and blue icon outfit, this movie is dead on arrival PERIOD. So Brandon better be hitting the gym round the clock 'cause every still I've seen of him to date, he looks waaaaay to wimpish to be the Man of Steel. Then again, Chris Reeve was a stick when he started (check the DVD screen test -- hell, look at SUPERMAN and the fact that you can literally tell the scenes they filmed with him first vs. later after he'd bulked more).

So why isn't Robin Tunney playing Lois?

    by robogeek.com

She was in Singer's HOUSE pilot, and bears an uncanny resemblence to a young Margot Kidder. If this really is a "continuation" of the first two SUPERMAN films, such casting might have been inspired and very cool. Honestly, as excited as I am about the project, the one thing I'm iffy about is Kate Bosworth as Lois. (Dye-job or not, I have fundamental issues with a 22-year-old blonde Lois. It Just Seems Wrong!)

    The Plot Thickens

    by jedibobster

Well...Hugh Laurie eh? Can't say I'd have picked his name out of actors most likely to play Perry White. I know him most from lighter humorous roles from Brit comedy during the 80s. I've not seen any of this HOUSE M.D. series. I suppose now we've got to put our trust in Bryan Singer and hope for the best. And Hugh's shoulders aren't the ones that this movie really rests on, that Atlas type responsibility goes to some guy I'd not heard of til a couple of months ago. To the person earlier that suggested Robin Tunney, yeah seeing pictures like this - http://www.miserablelie.com/aoa/pictures/robintunney.jpg - does make it slightly surprising that given she's worked with Singer that she wasn't cast over Katie Bosworth, but hopefully that decision was based on chemistry between Bosworth and Routh. At this moment we should just be damned grateful that this movie actually seems it may happen...maybe...perhaps...
