A Few Tiny Hints on STAR TREK

Published at:  Jan 10, 2005 3:21:52 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

It looks like the mirror-universe humans of 2063 first greeted the meddling Vulcans with closed fists instead of the “live long and prosper” hand-thingie. (Will a bearded Mirror-Picard be standing in the shadows beside a clean-shaven Mirror Riker?)

The really cool thing about this “Enterprise” episode, the 17th of the fourth season, is it’s expected to run with special Mirror-Universe title credits. (With more exciting title music?)

Does this suggest the mirror universe in the new episode won't interact with the regular Star Trek universe?

The title is “In a Mirror, Darkly.” It's the first "Mirror" story to see air since "Deep Space Nine" left the air. It will likely broadcast in March or April.

Read more gory details over at TrekWeb.com

New episodes of “Enterprise” resume this Friday with an episode about the guy who invented the transporter. Who is not Seth Brundle. At all.

    by triumph poops!

Seriously, I don't care what any of you naysayers claim. This season of ENTERPRISE has been terrific. The recent Vulcan arc rocked. Manny Coto taking over the series story direction -- that is, away from Berman and Braga -- has been a breath of welcome fresh air. I just hope the suits at UPN see fit to give the show a fifth season now. The good news is "rumored reports" indicate the Paramount brass HAS noticed a marked improvement in the quality of the show this year, so perhaps that's a good sign. Plus with the lameass Berman idea of young Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy for the next movie now squashed, Paramount will likely keep ENTERPRISE on the air another year simply to keep the Trek property alive. So that bodes well for ENTERPRISE as well. Best of all, here's looking forward to being able to buy ALL SEASONS of ENTERPRISE up through this current season on DVD by summer's end. That'll rule too.

    by prof. pop-cult

I just haven't been watching Enterprise regularly at all, but gimmicks like this draw me in to check out the particular episodes. If this is Enterprise's last season, then they might as well play on the history and continuity of Trek -- to at least set the foundation for a future Trek series after Enterprise after a (hopefully) appropriately long rest period (like, ten years) for the franchise. Manny Coto, you have my vote in hoping that Paramount hires you to take over the entire franchise in the future. I don't mean to slag on Berman and Braga -- they resuscitated Trek for a new generation, after all. But it's really time for them to move on, no animosity at all towards them, honestly. But it's just time for a rest and then a change, ok?

Can they come up with any plots that don't revolve around a concept from the other shows? How the hell did Law and Order, Homocide, or the various CSI clones make it as far as they did without a ''Mirror'' story? Is it possible to have an episode of Enterprise that doesn't rely on a plot device or such from the other series as crutch? This crap got real old, real quick on DS9.

What Will the Openning Song Be?

    by drath

I know it's shallow to be interested in something so superficial, but hey, the openning credits have been a snooze since the novelty wore off in the first season. I sometimes wish Trek changed its openning credits (significantly) every season. Again, I know that's a shallow wish, but it'd be something extra to look forward to. I think this has been a more encouraging season than season 2. I missed too much of season 3 to compare it, and I'll be happy to see that on DVD when it comes out. So far though, Archer is still not a very interesting main character. I think that might turn around this year (it did for Sisko), but so far he's been overshadowed by the Event story arcs. I know it's a little Babylon 5, but I'd like it if part of Surak is still in his noggin and continues to guide him in the coming years. I am glad they've moved on to the actual founding of the Federation. I suspect the Temporal Cold War will come up again however.________________________ You know, Brundle only invented the transporter because he saw it on Star Trek.

    New and improved Enterprise!

    by childe roland

Now 12% less shitty! Making it still about 80% crap (with 13% undigestible corn and 7% nuts). The Vulcan arc was mildly entertaining but got ridiculously boring about halfway through the second installment. Neither that nor the ridiculously derivative and unoriginal Space Seed prequel arc is enough to convince me the show has been consistently better this year. And this "mirror, mirror" ratings grab is just lame. I liken it to an eight year old trying to recapture the attention of his or her youth by speaking baby talk. It's not only not funny or cute, it makes me wonder if said eight year old (or the producers of this show) might have some sort of developmental disorder. Time for Enterprise (and Trek as a whole) to go night-night for a while. Oh, and saying that a particular phrase or activity "is so [insert time frame here]" is soooo 20th century. Really, mr. too-hip... get a grip.

Why not have Enterprise visit that segment of space that seemed full of parallel planets? The one where Rome never fell, the one where the communists invaded America, The Nazi planet. It would be fun to see Archer and crew land on the planet where Jesus ended up running Palistine or where Gene Roddenberry married Grace Lee Whitney.

Yeah, but if they get a new Mirror episode song...

    by drath

it might be cool for that one episode! I tend to agree, the openning song doesn't fit the show it introduces, and it's actually worse now that they sped it up. A lot of fans like it, but I think it would have been better for a West Wing style drama set at NASA (remember The Cape?) than a show that's features mostly action/adventure. But the question is, will the Mirror Universe opening credits have a cooler song? I wonder if it would be too much to use Bad to the Bone. Probably too obvious.

  • I'm one of those happy Trek fans who's finally back on board. The revamped Star Trek Enterprise is great! Great episodes this season with some cool ideas and great homages to the original Trek. If they're going to do a "prequel Trek series" than this is the way to do it, as a nice bridge to the other Trek shows. The first three years, I was like, "Why the hell did they decide to do this show as a PREQUEL and not take advantage of all the continuity story elements?" Finally, they have a guy in charge who knows Trek and obviously loves Trek. Hopefully, it's not too late to save the series -- but if it is, at least it's going out with a bang, and maybe the powers-that-be might learn something about how to handle the Trek franchise.

I'll give it a look-see. Now that no one is watching, the producers are under less stress to come up with something passable. Problem is, every single story that they might come up with has most likely been done in some iteration by one of the prior 4 iterations of ST (5 if you count the movies). Tough gig, writing for that show, especially when you most interesting character is only interesting when she has little clothing on.

    Enterprise Is Better This Year!

    by real deal

The show really has been showing steady improvement. I wouldn't knock the mirror universe show without seeing it. Given that this is in a time before Kirk and it's in the same part of the galaxy they would have to run into a lot of the same things so this stuff about stealing from previous shows really is a weak argument. I think the bashers ( I knew you'd start up if I said something ) need to go night, night. They sound a little cranky. By the way bashers what current Scifi show would you put in it's place? The only one I could think of as being as good or better ( different in my book ) is the new BSG. But that's already on another channel.

    by mad_radhu

By the goodness of the new Battlestar. I just D/L'd the 10th episode, "the Hand of God" last week and there is nothing in all of Enterprise that even comes close it. Not since B5 have I seen space battles so well realized that the new Vipers even move more like StarFuries than ships from the old show). Everything about the new BSG (the writing, directing, acting, set design, effects and even music) puts Enterprise to shame. Of course, it IS Ron Moore producing it, the guy who was responsible for some of the better Trek episodes.

    The Same

    by real deal

The same old stupidity laced with profanity. God you guys need to get a new act! STE has improved and you guys wouldn't admit it no matter what! We've been over this a billion times so there's no point in doing it again. It will be a sad day when Star Trek leaves the airways. It was the show that brought respectability to tv SF. It also was what brought interest in bringing more SF to tv. But what do nonlovers of Scifi care ( and I do believe some of you are ). I also look forward to BSG. We need more SF on tv now more than ever. However I don't think that BSG will spell a big ratings drop for STE. It's not what's on at the same time. Stargate is and it's very popular. I even like it! But I think that next year will be the last for it. Without RDA it's not going to survive. Even with Ben Browder. It's just not a show he's been identified with. We need more SF on tv to keep it alive.

    by noriko takaya

Can always use more good sci-fi on the tube, and it's well known that the best Trek series (Next Gen, DS9) took 2 - 3 seasons to get up to speed and take off. If the same holds true for Enterprise then now would be right about the time it would start improving. But I'll tell ya, it'll REALLY REALLY REALLY have to kick my ass to be able to compete with the glory that is Battlestar Galactica 2k5. I've got the DVD of the mini and a couple of the current eps (thanks Bittorrent, you slow-ass bastard!) and it stands head and shoulders above any other TV skiffy I've ever watched - and YES that includes Babylon 5 and Deep Space 9. Never ever thought I'd be able to say that about any show, but there it is. Moore has done - thus far - a superlative job. Let's hope Enterprise has it in itself to match that achievment. Toppu o Nerae!

    by the nihilist

...Christ, this is gay. Now the "Enterprise" crew will have encountered the Borg, the Ferengi and the mirror universe, and yet the crews in earlier series set in later time periods acted surprised. Hasn't Starfleet ever heard of intelligence briefings? I'm just gonna keep repeating it until somebody listens or until I get a brain embolism--GIVE THIS TIRED, BROKEN DOWN OLD HORSE A BULLET! PUT IT OUT OF OUR MISERY! Somebody in an earlier post whined "what sci-fi show would you replace it with?" My personal choice would be a triumphantly revamped, revived "Firefly." But really, anything would be better than this. Another reality crapfest, another OC homofest, anything. Let Star Trek die, let it lie fallow for a few years and then bring it back with a fresh creative crew. PLEASE!

    As an affirmed basher...

    by childe roland

...of all things shitty, including Enterprise, I can honestly say I know when it's time to go night night... right when Enterprise comes on. That song puts me to sleep every time. And the problem with folks like Real Deal wanting bad sci fi like Enterprise on just for the sake of wanting some sci fi on TV is that they encourage asshat network executives to make more shitty, formulaic and derivative sci fi while cancelling good, original stuff like Farscape and Firefly. Battlestar Galactica got off to a decent start with its mini, and I'll check out the other episodes as they become available. But I'm of a mind that sparse, good sci fi is better than having a lot of shit to choose from. Enterprise has yet to convince me that it can be anything but shit... and I've given it years to do so. It was an idea with a lot of promise that was totally mishandled from step one. It's not like the Simpsons, which started out pretty funny and then became hilarious (before becoming stale and lame), so that fans could look back at those first two seasons and see that the show was still finding its comedic legs. Enterprise started out as a shit sandwich and added more bread to change the amount of shit we have to eat with each bite, but it's all still a shitty shit sandwich at its heart.

    Mirror Universe explained...

    by robe05

...In the Shatner/Reeves-Stevens books, I think. I don't know if there's an explanation from an actual episode that trumps this one. I seem to remember that Z. Cochoran was debating whether or not to divulge what he knew of the Borg based on his encounter with the ST:NG crew in First Contact. In one reality, he keeps his mouth shut to preserve the timeline. In the other, he goes on about the future invaders, and the Federation develops as a militant rather than exploratory organization.
