'Shoot the glass... boy, am I depressed...' HGTTG's Marvin has a voice!!!

Published at:  Jan 07, 2005 3:03:18 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some exciting news for us HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY fans. According to HITCHHIKER'S fansite Planet Magrathea, director Garth Jennings dropped a bomb or two during an interview with the BBC Radio 1 about some additional casting in the film... some very important voices. One voice in particular I know I'm looking forward to hearing is that of Marvin, the depressed robot.

Marvin will be voiced by noneother than Alan Rickman and that has me giddy as a schoolgirl on holiday! Rickman can reach an amazingly scortching sarcastic tone with his voice and I just can't wait to hear it coming out of that slumped over sad little figure. Just look at his work in GALAXY QUEST for a bit of that sarcasm... strangely enough, a co-starring role with Sam Rockwell, who's playing Zaphod Beeblebrox.

This is note perfect... God, I hope this movie is everything it can be... With the cast they have already and the early design work, I hope this movie rules the earth... erm, I mean the Universe... Don't panic, squirts. It looks like all aspects of production are lining up. This one could work!!!

Bill Bailey, a British TV star of whom I know nothing of, but was apparently in something called BLACK BOOKS, is going to voice The Whale, which if I'm not mistaken is quite a small, but funny moment. I may be wrong, as I'm only into THE RESTAURANT AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE at the moment. Anyway, click below for the full story... and a couple of pics of Arthur, Ford, Zaphod and Marvin himself. Enjoy!

Brilliant voice casting! So far things seem to be going in the right direction for this film - except, what was that shit about Zaphod's second head being up his nose? That's just retarded - his second head is a proper fucking second head, it should be right next to his other head. Who the Hell came up with that shit? (I'll bet Douglas himself came up with that for the film and I'm just a pompous asshole).

You don't know "Black Books"!?!?! Shame on you Quint. Get yer ass online an import the DVDs from England for one of the funniest comedies out of England in a long time. (As a "Spaced" fan you should know Nick Frost guests in an episode of the first season and Simon Pegg guests in an episode of the third.) So many great moments of Dylan Moran as Bernard Black tormenting Bailey's Manny- What will happen when Manny gets too hot? Watch Manny play a piano with a set of spoons from inside the piano! Quality stuff here.

An inspired choice. I can easily hear Rickman's dry, sardonic voice emanating from Marvin's, uh, mouth. I still chuckle at his droll, sarcastic delivery in the mall opening scene in "Galaxy Quest."

  • Stephen Moore didn't want to do it or something??!! Marvin IS Stephen Moore, Stephen Moore IS Marvin!! When writing the books (which came after the radio series) Adams ALWAYS imagined Moores voice in his head when writing Marvin. Marvin is the best bloody character in the books, TV show, radio, the lot. You can have who the hell you like play the other parts but not to have Moore voice Marvin.... well that's like having Jude Law replace Harrison Ford as Indy!!! I was so, so , so looking forward to this film, it had my ticket money already but now, I honestly couldn't give a shit about it. The one thing they couldn't afford to get wrong and they blew it. And it's not just me. I have many friends who love THGTTG who are now officially bummed out at this news. It will make its money but it now has ZERO integrity. GOD I'M SO DEPRESSED!!!

  • Seriously man.

  • I admit, Stephen Moore rocks the freakin casba (can listen to all of his lines constantly and they're always funny) but Rickman ain't no slouch either. I'm sure he'll do a good job and they sound vaugely similar anyway.

  • I think the lackluster & silly look of Marvin just adds another indignity he has to suffer and adds to his depression. Funny stuff, and I'm all for torturing the poor guy. I hope they make it to "Life the Universe and Everything", I'd love to see him in the swamps missing a leg walking in circles. If he looks silly and stupid, that's good, because its another reason for him to be bummed out. Love everything I've heard & seen about the movie so far . . . aside from the Zaphod's second head comming out of his nose bit. That's just .... blech.

    Black Books rules!

    by darth tenor

Black Books starred Dylan Moran (best known as the "twat" who got his guts eaten out in Shaun of the Dead) played an antisocial alcoholic book store owner, occasionally pestered by Bill Bailey. It ran for about 5 minutes on Comedy Central late nights, and I wish you could get a Region 1 DVD somewhere...

Relax, Zaphod's head does NOT reside in his nose

    The Zaphod head thing

    by monkey butler

I've heard about the nose thing, and if it's true I'm sure it can't be as retarded as it sounds (nobody would go to the trouble of doing something so stupid unless they could actually pull it off...at least, you'd hope so), but I still hope it's not true. The underneath the first head I haven't heard before, and I don't really get what you mean by it, but I guess as long as it works it should be OK. I'd prefer having the two heads side by side, but I suppose that could look kinda stupid too...Whatever, I still have faith, especially looking at the design sketches on the net. Reading this TB it seems that alot of people don't like the designs for Marvin (and I'm guessing Deep Thought and the Heart of Gold), and they're definitely not what I had in mind from the books, but I reckon they look kinda cool.

Alan Rickman is the perfect choice for Marvin!!

    by moviemaniac-7

One of the best (but absolutely the funniest) books ever written and the best part goes to Mr Rickman! Kicks ass!! I don't see how this adaptation can go wrong anymore. Talented people behind and in front of the camera and all sounds and looks fantastic so far. But if the makers screw up, I'll have their heads on a plate - with some garlic for taste.

Marvin should be depressed not sarcastic

    by pavemental

Rickman is great at sarcasm, but Marvin's sarcasm is one of utter resignation at the futility of life, not a withering sarcastic bite a la Rickman. Agreed: Nigel Planer would have been a far better choice. This more and more looks like a grand misfire: good attempts to get it right but too many mis-steps.

HHGTG is my #1 movie I'm looking forward to this year, and dreading it at the same time. I'm such a big fan of DNA, I hope they don't mess it up.

Mind you, I'm expecting big changes to the plot. And from what I've heard they've been designed by DNA himself. Which is how HHGTG works.

Anyway. Alan Rickman is a great choice. Think of the low droning sarcastic voice he had in Dogma. That's perfect.

And they're going to voice the whale. Man. I thought they'd never have the balls to do that on film. BTW, the whale is actually from the first book. For those that don't know, the whale basically is a brand-new creater discovering his world in his first few seconds...

Before meeting an untimely end. Now the question..will they do the flowers?

The casting and costumes tell me somewhere Douglas Adams has just turned over in his grave. If people want to see what Adams intended, pick up the collected TV series, now available on VHS and DVD. Me, I am going to avoid this movie like the plague.

BILL BAILEY IS A TROLL GOD FROM HEAVEN

    by snuggleskunk

Just had to say that. Can't believe that you US guys bother importing Spaced and The Office etc. but miss out on our downright straightforward funny stuff like Black Books. Bill Bailey also does a lot of stand up and he's wonderful and lovely and all should bow at his wonderfulness. Oh and he had a great part in Saving Grace, a british film about nice old ladies selling dope. Anyway go watch Black Books all of you. Now. Then you might recognise some more of the cast of Shaun of the Dead.

    by raw_bean

If anyone else, ever, was perfect for Marvin, it's Alan Rickman. If you need to hear more Stephen Moore, you've got the two new radio series to sate your appetite. Others have mentioned this already, but have you seen Galaxy Quest? No further evidence is needed for the appropriateness of this casting. --------- And Bill Bailey, Klingon rock-opera troll-God of comedy that he is, should be required to appear in everything ever, by law, in my opinion.

Recipe for Americans wanting to remake foreign masterpiece: Surgically remove any humour, irony, suspense, downbeat ending etc, cast bland US "stars" familiar to people in Spunkfelcher Falls, Alabama. Make millions of dollars profit from people too stupid, lazy or xenophobic to read subtitles or comprehend a non-US accent. God bless America!!!

Rickman is great when he is sarcastic...which is very necessary for Marvin. This looks like its going to come out of no where to be one of the top movies of the summer of 05. A great appertizer for that little independent film coming out in May.

    by minderbinder

What are you talking about, none of the americans in the cast are "stars" by any stretch of the imagination, and a decent number of parts are still going to brits. I think Rickman is a perfect choice, very close to what I always imagined.

    by dante cubit

They have a black man as Ford Prefect, a two-headed Zaphod who doesn't look like he has two heads, and someone's quibbling that STEPHEN MOORE isn't playing Marvin the Android? Moore was great, but this is not a fucking REMAKE of the cheesy TV series. I think Alan Rickman is a PERFECT CHOICE for Marvin. I can't wait to hear Alan's take on the poor, self-loathing robot. This will be fucking hilarious.
