Too cool Vanity Fair EPISODE 3 cover, including Ford, Hamill and Billy Dee! + ST & Clone Wars DVD info!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with something that's too cool for school. with help from have come up with the Vanity Fair cover (a four page fold out) for Episode 3 and boy is it awesome...

What's really giving me hope for REVENGE OF THE SITH is just how much they're associating the look, feel and now actors of the original trilogy with this last film. They're building more sets than in the other prequels, the sets look more like the OT, I've heard they've gone back to model work on a few of the sequences in the movie... hell, the teaser trailer was 40% original trilogy material. All this is either a ploy by Lucas to get those who love the original trilogy, but aren't fond of the new films to fork over their money for another prequel or it could be a sign that he's making this final prequel line up with the look and feel of the original trilogy.

Who knows, historians could look upon the prequel series as a genius move by Lucas to lower the fan expectations for the knock-out punch with REVENGE OF THE SITH. I'm beginning to have faith... So, I'll be very, very upset if he drops the ball. But goddamn if it doesn't give a geek the shivers to see Harrison Ford, at his cocky best, sitting next to Chewie with his princess draped over him. Although, Harry pointed out that Yoda doesn't seem too happy to be on Lucas' lap. Did he get shafted on his pay? Or is he feeling a lump where there shouldn't be one... And where the hell is Alec Guiness? Billy Dee rules and is still awesome looking!!! Hamill is a lounging jedi! And isn't it a little disturbing that Christopher Lee is rubbing elbows with Jar-Jar? Don't fuck this up, Lucas!!!

Also of note is John Williams' soundtrack, possibly his last STAR WARS music ever, will be released on May 3rd. And the CLONE WARS DVD SEASONS 1 and 2 will be released March 22nd. I love Tartakovsky's work on THE CLONE WARS so far and I can't wait to see his longer episodes in the near future!!! Good job to for their massive scoopage!!

I'm not buying that lineup for a second. Especially Natalie Portman draped across Lucas himself -- crikey, that girl should be kicking herself for ever getting involved in this botch of a trilogy and holding her career back half a decade or more!!

    Being first...

    by Lazarus Long

Gee, Ingeld, I don't know who to tell to get a life first, you for bragging about being first (as if the pathetic one word "first" post wasn't bad enough), or Riptides for inaccurately thinking HE was first, and asking "How cool am I?" Take a guess. Not too cool. As someone who has been first on several occasions, actually read the respective articles before posting each time, and never wrote less than a couple lines regarding the actual topic, I think I can fairly say that First Posters are losers on a far lower level lower of geekdom than the rest of us. Things are definitely not equal as you perceive them to be. AICN geeks are here because they love movies. People who love being first more than discussing movies...I don't know what the fuck that is, but it definitely belongs to the juvenile category.

I will never understand how the timestamp / order of posts here works .. I think it is seriously messed up by different time zones ... e.g. when I posted there were about 20 posts already, but my post shows now as #6 ? why that ? Maybe because I am sitting in Japan right now and it is already the 5th ? no idea ... looking at the localized time stamps does not help much either ... besides the lame 'being first', it makes the discussion tricky .. sometimes I read replies to questions which come 50 posts later ...

I'm gushing like a schoolgirl over this shot. It's a great picture. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see a couple of little bookend scenes at the end of ROTS? One where Mark Hamill is presiding on Coruscant in a room full of reassembled Jedi Knights, one where Harrison Ford and Billie Dee Williams disembark from a beat up Corellian space freighter with a familiar Wookie in tow and one where they all meet up with Carrie Fisher

They used more models in TPM than in the entire original trilogy. You morons and your anti-cgi Lucas-bashers are so full of shit it isn't funny.

    by ChrisPC24

That's a nice photo there. BTW, "gone back to models"? I guess the digital compositing makes everything look CG, because Lucas used models, sets, and even matte paintings in all six of the films.

Coatsy is right, and for Jon E

    by proper

Harrison is vexed because as a serious actor he doesn't like having to be still a part of Star Wars, and having Carrie next to him rather than Ally Mcbeal reminds him of his mortality, Hayden and Mark are vexed because as the trilogy is about them they want to stand where Jar Jar and Christopher Lee are,and Sam?,Sam is vexed because he wanted Natalie And Carrie to be next to him rather than the camp droid,Jar Jar and the guy from L.A. Law.....still if we don't bring politics(Star Wars,Bushian or otherwise) into it it's a very nice pic.Looking forward to the movie.

    "Genius Move by Lucas?????"

    "Genius Move by Lucas????"

    by Aetius450

The idea that Lucas would intentionally tank the first two in order to make potential greatness of the finale stand out even more is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. Doing so would run the risk that by the time EpIII arrived, no one would care. It would also reflect very poorly on Lucas that he would intentionally release two turkeys (for those who think they suck that is -- afterall there is hardly a consensus opinion)for no good reason. I could accept that he just wasn't too excited about TPM and AOTC and therefore put forth a half-assed effort in writing and directing them, but that he is very passionate about EpIII and that he gave it his all in all stages of production. But again, this would reflect poorly on Lucas -- if he couldn't get up for two of the most anticipated movies in history, movies that would go a long way in establishing his own legacy and reputation, then he should have turned over the writing/directing to others and just provided the story and produced as he did on Empire. Whatever the case, it will be very interesting if the charges of especially-atrocious dialogue, and stiff/wooden/lifeless acting are not leveled at EpIII as they were for the other two prequels. If suddenly the actors show the same skill they display in every other movie they do because Lucas gave them better-written parts and gave better direction then it will only beg the question of why he didn't do the same for the first two. Whatever the case, count me as one who liked the prequels, but thought they fell far short of their potential, that Lucas in large part wasted his talented cast, and that he made bad story decisions like jar jar and a child anakin and handling the love story himself, that he should have easily avoided.

  • Is there something wrong with me? I thought AOTC was a much better film when I saw it, but now it bores me to death. I find myself (along with my 3 year old son) watching Menace a lot more than Clones. Clones has very little replay value, where as Menace is kinda fun and the final Darth Maul saber battle STILL kicks major ass. Best fight scene in the entire series, hands down. And speaking of Clones, my 3 year old prefers the Clone Wars animated series to any of the actual movies.

Pretty well sure this is a complete group....

by tucson PhotoShop. The photographer is the great Annie Liebovitz, who has done these large layout photos for VF for a number of years. The April issues are the New Actors, and she usually showcases 12-15 individuals in a single shot. It's not like Ford or Hammil or Williams are riding so high on their current popularity that they'd snub this shoot, and for good or ill, this is a snapshot of film culture. I don't think anyone would poo-poo that. Yeah, something should've been done to include Jones and Guinness (maybe a little hologram, like on the intro to Masterpiece Theatre...)

    by JethroBodine

Wicket is on the pic too. Wait till the mag comes out and you'll see what I mean. What I don't understand is why SOME of the characters are in costume and not all of them. Poor Anthony Daniels has to be in the fuckin suit again, no wonder why he's such a pissy little bitch. And Peter Mayhew, as well as possibly Kenny Baker, why have them in their costumes too, why not everyone else? When will they ever get their day in the sun? How bout slappin olde megabux stiff acting Harrison Ford back in his costume or perhaps stuff Carrie Fisher back into her Ep 1 Moo-Moo (sp), I'm sure she still fits (wink wink). And if Hayden is not in the Vader suit who is? Dare I bring up the spectre of the beguiled Spoiler Boy David Prowse? LUCAS SUCKS KAK!

I think that is a wonderful shot for nostalgia and completion. I am grateful just to see Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill reunited. It warmed my heart to see that they got so many key people together. I am starting to warm up to Episode 3 and get enthusiastic about it... and then am curious to see if a TV series launches starring Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker... or whatever that rumor mill is pointing to. In the end, this makes me happy and it brings a sense of closure to almost 30 years of adventure.

    by devil0509

That's gotta be the explanation for two seriously retarded statements (Lucas's genius and Alec Guinness's absence) in one post. And how do you like the big "fuck you" from Lucas to all the prequel trashers, putting Jar Jar front and center? Jar Jar is the symbol of everything that is wrong with episodes 1 and 2, and there he is, in your face. Basically, Lucas is saying, "You don't like the prequels? Who cares, you're still forking over money to see them. So blow me, like Natalie did about 15 minutes ago." In a twisted way, you almost have to respect his attitude. He's rich as shit, and no matter what garbage he puts out there, if it says Star Wars on it, you're still going to give him your money. That being said, it would be nice if it ends up being a good movie, wouldn't it? But how much faith do you want to put in a director hasn't directed a good movie in 28 years?

    by NFLRefugee

    by Nekros

boys while Jar jar was a horrible character he was one of the first fully intergrated CGI characters put into one of the most wished for movies of all time. This cover showed pop culture touchstones that showcase the new and old of the STAR WARS SAGA. Jar jar, by being such a reviled character generated a lot more press than more loved characters. And the absense of Fett (or Fett's) was that in the great scheme of main stream public, they were minor characters. This was vanity fair not an industry or fan mag.

I'm surprised Drew Carey hasn't mentioned it on Whose Line Is It Anyway?

    by MaulRat

Niiiiiiiiiice... the only way it could have been cooler would be if it was against the backdrop of the emperors chamber with George sitting in the Emperors chair and they have the major players around him AND all the 'passed on' characters in 'jedi ghost/holographic' form (ie. Alec Guinness in Obi-Wan robes glowing behind George and Peter Cushing in the Tarkin outfit as a hologram next to vader.. Nice touch with Carrie, Harrison and Mark Hamill... spppooooooooooge!!

even if they didnt get everybody there on the same day who gives a shit? it adds up real nice and if they DID show up on the same day (in the name of history perhaps?) then hey- you're an asshole for being a nattering nabob. and i won't even address the THROWING of EP I and II, that's been sufficiently addressed by the multitudes. that some suckers still cant appreciate what lucas is up to (6 episodes=2 multigenerational trilogies for two different generations consisting of movies that refer to each other in terms of thematic, visual, structural, musical motifs= 1 story= fucking genius) even after jerking off like everybody else has to new dvds is beyond me, but hey.

Is it sad that I still have hope for Episode III?

    by LeFlambeur

Maybe not. Episode I sucked and could have benefited from a less is more approach, the first half of Episode II sucked, but the second half was better. Star Wars was excellent, maybe episode III will bridge the gap! Maybe???

Sounds like your kid is on the right track in preferring TPM (and the animated series) over AOTC. now your mission is to save the original versions of the first trilogy to you know, keep it real. Don't want to have him grow up on georges misguided attempt to re-write history. :)

    Mace Windu is a Sith

    by Capnfantastik

There's nowhere to really say this, but the ONE thing that ucas hasn't managed to have in the prequel trilogy is for an otherwise mild-mannered black man throw his friends under a bus ala Lando Calrissian. When I think about "The Phantom Menace" alluding to some unseen force of evil that eludes the Jedi, I think well, of course it's the Emperor and maybe 1 other Sith, Darth Maul, who already got taken-out like a bizznitch. Then in Episode 2, Dooku tells Obi-Wan about the Sith and controlling the Senate, but is thought to be lying about it. Every scene in which Yoda is "thinking hard" about the Force and coming-up without anything. Mace Windu has been there all along, and is supposedly second only to Yoda. I get the feeling that Sam Jackson and a few Jedi need to off-the entire council and then be summarily obliterated in a horrifically Lucas-way. I mean, Windu tries to protect Dooku by stating that he was once a Jedi and couldn't assasinate anyone, but then we see him show-up and off- Jango Fett by the end of Ep. 2. The recent pics leaked online show Yoda laying on the floor, and a decidedly sinister pic of Mace and several Jedi that looks to be a film still rather than a promotional pic. I really hope we get a little intrigue this time around, it would make the "Phantom Menace" idea so much more resonate if we find-out that some of the Jedi were just plain bastards. I want to see Obi and Anakin whup each other's asses, but I'd also enjoy having a cool plot device like a double-cross make this whole trilogy worthwhile. Am I alone on this?
