Reviews Are In For Glenn Gordon Caron
SPOILER ALERT !!
The first TV series created by Glenn Gordon Caron was ABC’s “Moonlighting” (1985-89), a pioneering and popular marvel. Caron’s second, lesser-known series was “Now and Again” (1999-2000), an equally wonderful comedy adventure about a frustrated government-made superman. It lasted 22 episodes on CBS.
“Medium,” NBC’s new hourlong about a thirtysomething pre-law student (Patricia Arquette) who decides to use her bizarre abilities to solve crimes, is Caron’s third series to see air.
Caron’s pilot script for “Medium” – or at least the one I read last summer – didn’t suck at all. Maybe someone at the network decided it wasn’t enough like “CSI: Miami”? If the “Medium” pilot itself sucks at least a little (as at least some of the reviews below suggest) I suspect I’ll still be sticking with it at least a little while, just because Caron has repeatedly proven himself such an accomplished comic storyteller.

The Hollywood Reporter says:
… works hard to dramatize Dubois' realization of her psychic abilities and their power to solve crimes. Too hard, actually. It comes off more like a truncated docudrama than an introduction to a series that will offer satisfying dramatic entertainment. … a subsequent episode sent for review is more promising. … Variety says:
… a ho-hum addition to TV's burgeoning crime blotter … even in a second episode, the combo of psychic crime-solver by day, wife and mom by night doesn't prove particularly riveting. … Allison is such a passive heroine that it's hard to get too involved with her, and Arquette doesn't bring much life to the role. Moreover, the episodes made available are virtually devoid of supporting players or any workplace tension to augment her relatively staid (by TV standards, anyway) home life. … USA Today gives it two stars (out of four) and says:
… throws in so many potentially fatal flaws of its own, you'd think the network had a death wish. … Medium seems to actually support the claims of the real-life Allison, thereby alienating a large swath of the population who think mediums are either lying or cracked. … doesn't get much help from Arquette, who gives one of the season's stranger and more off-putting performances. … The Los Angeles Times says:
… a so-so parapsychological police procedural … Arquette's spiky, sparring scenes with [the skeptical sheriff character] are the show's best, not surprising given that the pride of creator Glenn Gordon Caron's résumé is spiky, sparring "Moonlighting." These scenes suggest a better series than "Medium." It is, to be fair, watchable enough, if watched uncritically, and not without flashes of high craft; art and inspiration are a little beyond its grasp. … The Portland Oregonian says:
… it's not half bad … So why did it leave such a sour taste in my mouth? Maybe it was all the dead kids. … Arquette does a fine job of keeping her character's feet on the ground, even as her luminous eyes peer off into the ether. … the first two episodes make clever use of the tension between the mortal and spirit worlds. Strung between the magical and the horrific, the show is haunted with possibility. Keep your eyes on the crystal ball to see if it amounts to anything. 10 p.m. Monday. NBC.

who gives a shit, really? Man, Patricia Arquette can be good in a movie once in a while (True Romance), but as a general rule, she's the best cue-card reader in Hollywood (nearly every other movie she's been in). Let's get Keanu Reeves and Arquette in a movie called, "How Fast Can We Suck the Life Out of Our Audience?"

I used to like Patricia in ANOES 3. But shes gotten ugly and weird looking with age. This show may live for a while though. NBC is hurting, and Medical Investigation is thriving. So hey, you never know.

is for Now and Again to be released on DVD. It was one of the best shows to not find an audience ever. Unique story, great cast and excellent writing.
BTW, spend a few years with Nic Cage and see if it doesn't age you horribly as well. -

How is this show not on DVD yet? Perhaps the greatest writing on a show ever? Rumor has it it's coming this year, but it's a shame it's not out already. Groundbreaking shit. The black and white episode introduced by Orson FUCKING Welles and the Shakespeare parody are two of the best hours ever aired. Willis was never better.

Now that was a really great and cool show... I figure if SWAT can last essentially a year and spawn a $100 million grossing movie, why not NOW AND AGAIN? That idea is so cinematic and wonderful, it could totally work on the big screen. And I don't care if someone steals this idea, because I know it's great and it stems from me wanting to see the show again in some aspect, so steal away!

I dug the pilot, I'll stick with it. Arquette's performance is nicely grounded, I like that her home life is normal and she is trying to come to terms with her power that apparently she has had all along she just tries to hide it. The Texas Ranger was cool, too bad he probably won't be a recurring character.

I've still got that episode of Moonlighting on videotape somewhere, and now that Lazarus mentioned it, i'm gonna' have to find it and watch it, even though I hate to watch anything on tape anymore.

I didn't love it though. I'll probably watch it as long as they keep it on Monday nights. I think Patricia Arquette is a believable lead, but some of the dialogue was kind of stiff. She actually said "effin" which made me laugh in a moment where she was supposed to be upset. I'll watch the next few eps to see where they are heading with this series. I will say it's the best thing NBC has had to offer recently, with "Hawaii" being a boring, unwatchable mess and "Father of the Pride" being basically unfunny.

I liked it.
It has a 6th sense feel to it, which is what they were going for.

I will watch it simply because I enjoy thinking about putting my penis into Patricia Arquette's vagina for the purpose of sexual stimulation. In the past I have surpressed these feelings after hearing that one of the Arquette family had a sex change a ways back, wasn't sure which one. I've seen the Crying Game, and I simply don't have enough free time for life-altering, sexually confused turmoil right now. But I recently discovered in fact that it was their older brother, Alex\Alexis who had the change. So now that I know that her vagina is really a vagina and not a renovated asshole, I am once again free to imagine inserting my penis\tongue\fingers\champagne bottle into it. And I intend to do so. I thank you for your time.

It was entertaining. What are these critics complaining about?
