Listen up, lowly dogs! Jack Black and Kyle Gass speak about the TENACIOUS D movie!!

Published at:  Dec 29, 2004 5:29:38 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some words from the two kings themselves, Rage Cage (Kyle Gass) and Jables (Jack Black) on the status of the TENACIOUS D movie. I got the chance to spend some time with Jack on the KING KONG set (further information on that visit coming soon) and asked him personally about the Tenacious D flick. He said it was on the fast track at New Line and it was definitely happening. It looks like he's confirmed this now with the New Zealand Herald. I've reprinted the interview below, but make sure to check out the original story here!!! Have fun, it's a great read... and I can tell ya'... The below IS Jack Black. He's on 24/7 and one of the coolest cats in the world! Enjoy!!!

Tenacious D: Mock’n’rollers

by Cathrin Schaer

Your average journalist gets off the phone from interviewing Jack Black and his partner in mock’n’roll, Kyle Gass, feeling paranoid. You’re unsure whether they were angry with you, they were being sarcastic, or you’re just an idiot who didn’t quite get it.

Questions arise - are they like this all the time? Can anyone rock that hard? And how cool can a pair of chubby thespians with guitars be?

One thing is for sure, since their band Tenacious D - or "the D" - first appeared on the alternative stand-up comedy circuit in the USA, Black’s prickly, dark humour and his ability to scream and play guitar at the same time as Gass rocks out has gained the pair many fans, as well as a television series, a heavy-metal-folk record, rock star buddies like Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters, a Spike Jonze-directed music video and soon a feature film.

Oh, and the title of "Greatest Band in the World" (which they conferred on themselves).

Black, who’s best known for his movie roles in the likes of High Fidelity and School of Rock, is filming King Kong in Wellington with director Peter Jackson.

But Tenacious D are back on the road - between Auckland and Wellington during Christmas and New Year. Before getting together this month, the pair were briefly reunited in a conference call between Auckland, Wellington and the US.

So what brings Tenacious D to New Zealand this December?

Kyle: Well, I wanted to visit Jack but I didn’t want to pay.

Jack: Ha ha.

Kyle: Actually no, we wanted to for a while so we thought why don’t we put on a few gigs. It was just one of those things.

Jack: True. And actually I’ve been missing the ROCK.

So rock’n’roll or acting - if you had to choose one or the other, what would it be?

Jack: I would ROCK. It’s not so much that I miss the ROCK, it’s that I miss the performing of the ROCK. It feels good to get out there. It’s actually really nerve-racking right beforehand but then when you’re doing it, it can be, uh, orgasmic.

So how long has it been since you’ve had one of these rock orgasms?

Jack: It’s been a few months now.

Yet in the past people have described Tenacious D as mock rock?

Kyle: Jeez, that’s pretty harsh. What reviews have you been reading that said we were fake rockers?

Jack: Kyle, don’t be so sensitive.

Kyle: I feel challenged.

Jack: Listen, Beethoven didn’t get any good reviews when he started. Do you think he cried into his soup? No, he went and wrote another masterpiece.

Kyle: Yep, yep, you’re right.

Jack: So, you’re asking whether we’re rock swindlers? Well, you know what they say, the great artist borrows, the genius steals. So I’m gonna say we are genius and you can take from that what you want.

Kyle: I don’t think we’ve ever swindled anybody. If you come to our show, you’re gonna go out of there smiling. If you do feel swindled, come and talk to me about it.

Jack: Yeah, if you feel swindled, don’t come see me. Talk to Kyle.

And have you missed each other since you’ve been in New Zealand?

Jack: Dude, I totally miss you.

Kyle: [silence].

Is there anything about New Zealand that you feel the urge to tell Kyle about?

Kyle: What is this? Group therapy?

Jack: Actually, I do. Okay, Kyle, over here in New Zealand you’re allowed to have fur coats and stuff - even though in the States, it’s really frowned on. But out here I was given a possum skin rug and when I first got it, I said ooh, that’s kinda weird, that’s fur and then it was explained to me that no, possums are the devil and they’re destroying the environment. So I was actually helping out. And I tell you, they are scrum-diddly-icious to run your fingers through. I like to take a hot shower, get naked and rub my bum on the rug.

Kyle: Ahhh. And I’ve got something to tell you - I’m way over 300lbs. I can’t stop eating.

Jack: No-ooo.

Kyle: Seriously dude, I can’t stop eating. I’m like one of those rats that keep eating until they explode.

So what’s happening with the Tenacious D movie?

Jack: We could start shooting as early as April 1.

Kyle: Wow.

Jack: Are you ready for that, Kyle?

Kyle: No, I hadn’t heard. That is good news though.

Jack: Oh okay, no one’s saying that except for me. But that’s what I want to happen.

Kyle: I want it to happen, too. But I think you wanting it to happen might actually make it happen.

Is that how it works with you guys? Is Jack the more organised one or something?

Jack: No, but my voice is like the voice of Thor. When I speak it’s like a [expletive] thunderbolt, and people quake and shiver and shit happens.

Is this true, Kyle?

Jack: Just listen to this [over the phone comes the sound of something like rushing water].

What was that?

Jack: The sink. I was doing the dishes.

Was it really?

Jack: All right, it was the toilet.

Well, you do get better acoustics in the bathroom.

Jack: That’s right. That’s why I was in there.

Have you been tempted to invite any of your fellow stars from the King Kong set to participate in the Tenacious D movie?

Jack: No, not really. We’re mostly sticking to rock icons. That’s what we really want.

Kyle: Why would we want Adrien Brody in our movie? Not that he’s not great, but does he rock?

Jack: He does rock, actually. But he prefers hip-hop.

Tenacious D played at a John Kerry benefit - so how did you feel when the other guy won?

Kyle: I feel good for the people of Iraq because they’re going to get the democracy they’ve always dreamed of. And I feel good for the troops because they’ll get the combat they always wanted. I feel good for all the conservatives because they’re finally gonna have their way. Other than that, it’s just, uh, business as usual.

Jack: I’ve felt disappointed in the past about things that our Government has done or people who have been elected but this is the first time I’ve felt really ashamed to be part of that country. It’s definitely my lowest point - that is, it’s not the lowest point in my life - but it’s the worst I’ve felt about my country.

Kyle: You know what the saddest thing for me is? That it came down to one state, Ohio. And Jack and I were gonna play all over Ohio. They only lost by 100,000 votes.

Jack: What are you saying? That it was King Kong? That it was King Kong that brought George Bush?

Kyle: If you hadn’t been doing King Kong we might have been able to swing Ohio.

Jack: How can you say that? We never talked about playing all over Ohio!

Kyle: We were gonna play all over all the swing states.

Jack: You should have played alone.

Kyle: If we’d played Ohio hard enough, we could have changed things.

Jack: That’s bullshit. We raised a lot of money for John Kerry.

Kyle: We needed to go hand-to-hand combat in Ohio. We could have changed it.

You don’t resent Jack’s movie stardom, do you Kyle?

Kyle: No, I don’t. I think King Kong is a great project. I am really excited about it.

Are you going to go on set? Is Jack going to introduce you to Peter Jackson?

Kyle: I’m sure they don’t have time to meet people.

Maybe you’ll get to see the monkey?

Jack: Kyle, you won’t get to see the monkey but you will see the actor who’s gonna play the monkey - it’s this guy Andy Serkis. He played Gollum. Actually dude, we should get him to come out and sing a song with us as Gollum.

Kyle: Wow, is he a good singer?

Jack: He made a CD and a couple of the songs are so funny.

Kyle: That’s the greatest thing ever.

Jack: I don’t know if I should say what song he might do over the phone ‘cause I don’t want to give that away over the phone.

Kyle: Make it a surprise.

Jack: And he’s not gonna look like Gollum, he’s just gonna sound like him. He doesn’t look like Gollum at all. But he does look a little like Smeagol.

Kyle: That’s awesome, dude.

Jack: I don’t know how he does it.

Kyle: That’s really eerie.

Jack: I know.

He can be a bit rowdy at times but he has proven he has some real comedic talent in his stage show, or even little bits like on Mr. Show, and who could forget that fox pilot that was never picked up, Heat Vision and Jack. Top choice shit right there

Great interview until the Bush bashing. Jack if you are so disenchanted with the Country that made you a star don't come back. I'm sick of the whining and moaning of the Liberal Democrats who blame everything from global warming to the empty toilet paper roll on the Conservatives. Why do so many liberal stars feel the need to poison the water of the US public? Jack is hilarious as a comedian, and rocks out as "D," but falls flat as the voice of reason.

    by greedonevershot

I am not one to ususally get involved into political debates. But this has gotten ridiculous. George W. is, without a doubt, the worst president this nation has ever had. And I'm not saying John Kerry was definitely the answer, but wouldn't it be nice if the leader of the free world could put a coherent sentence together when a microphone is placed in front of his weasel face? Wouldn't it be convenient if he could muster a cogent response any time a tough question is asked of him? If he hadn't already proven it, the presidential debates exposed him for the simpleton he is. make no mistake -- I am a patriot, I love my country and my heart goes out to all the soldiers needlessly dying for his oil and his bullshit vendetta. But I am ASHAMED of our nation's failure to recognize this situation. The election speaks volumes for the ignorance of the American public.

    by federicoz

greedo..it's not that the American public did not realize that Bush has trouble at the mike. It is the fact that they DID realize that Kerry would be bad for the country. Bad for taxes ('I won't raise taxes, I will rollback the tax cuts). Puhlease. Too much double talk.

It came down to a simple fellow who people thought they could trust, or a more polished guy who people knew they could not. Simple vote, eh?

    by greedonevershot

I agree that John Kerry was not a perfect candidate. I wish he would have shown more balls during the campaign and really made his opinions known. For the record, I don't think the average American will ever have a caring leader when the race always boils down to two uber-wealthy white male Skull & Bones alums. However, my biggest concern for our nation during the election was the unwinnable war we're currently wasting tens of thoudands of teenage lives on. I felt that having experienced combat, Kerry may have eventually shown some compassion and put the needless suffering and death to an end. Instead, Bush is still president, our military is stretched thinner than it's ever been and we're on the verge of a military failure that years from now will make Vietnam pale in comparison.

    Unwinnable war

    by federicoz

Hmm..Greedo is making me think a bit.

It may be true that this is an 'unwinnable war'; certainly, it is not progressing as smoothly or as quickly as many of us may have hoped. However, the problem that I have is that if America does not actively seek out and target terrorist or terrorist-sympathic organizations, who will?

The UN is ineffective and anti-US. Allowing that organization to control a war effort would be akin to allowing a cigarette company to control your cancer treatments - its a serious conflict of interests. The *only* group that is capable of successfully executing a plan to reduce world-wide terrorism is the US...and it is possible that we cannot do it either.

    Hmmm...depressing thought.

    GreedoNeverShot, here's an idea

    by bubba jotep

How about if Jack Black (or any celebrity) only released his movies in liberal leaning New York and LA, and maybe parts of Chicago that agree with his politics? Or how about a litmus test for movie attendees? You would have to agree that George Bush is the worst president ever in order to have the honor of attending a Hollyweird movie. How many films do you think would actually make it over the profit hump?

Free speech is our country's backbone. It just seems like bad business to potentially piss off fully half of the country who voted FOR George Bush in order to appease the almost half who were mostly voting AGAINST George Bush (and not really for thier candidate).

I love Jack Black's work, but every time I hear an artist I like speak of politics (left or right), it pulls away from the experience. No longer can that artist become the character being played, but will for a time be the political activist, pulling on thier own puppet strings for a political agenda.

The sense of trust, the feeling of escapism, the way a movie can draw me in to the story.... all gone when an actor/artist uses thier fame for an agenda.

It's not about the politics...it's about the loss of an art form one actor at a time.

    Milton Waddams

    by greedonevershot

Actually, Milton, I am a professor of journalism who does his best to stay informed as to the events of the world around him. I read books and newspapers, I watch the kind of television shows that I feel keep me abreast of world events and trends, and I am a concerned American. All of those things qualify me to form my own opinion. You don't have to be a political historian to have a political opinion. I am neither Republican nor Democrat, but my belief that Bush is unfit to lead our nation stems from many things I have seen and read about the man over the last decade. I do not rehash other people's thoughts. If you disagree with me, that is fine -- I always welcome a calm, well-thought-out debate. But don't tell me that I'm not qualified to form my own opinion.

    But Greedo....

    by super person

That's what conservatives DO... any time you argue that what the Bush administration is doing is ruining this country, they say you're a liberal spewing bigotry, or you're following a herd mentality, or you hate your country, or some other similar bullshit response... it's an easy out so they don't have to listen to you... I TALK to conservatives and I LISTEN to them, and while I've come to totally understand why many of them hated Kerry and would never vote for him, I still cannot understand why they support Bush.. it has nothing to do with not knowing your history or hating your country or always blaming America or whatever other bullshit catchphrases conservative apologists throw out, it has to do with looking at the situation and assessing it with a sober mind and a global viewpoint... it's just that simple...

    Reply to Talkback

  • Dec 29, 2004 12:45:20 PM CST

And, lest I should be misunderstood...

    by super person

Please understand I do mean only those conservatives who support Bush loudly, absolutely, and unswervingly... I wouldn't want to get involved in the messy game of playing generalities and absolutes, since I know many very sensible conservatives who realize that Bush doesn't represent their ideals... I don't see this as a liberals-vs-conservatives debate (though unfortunately it's generally played as one because that's where the dividing line usually falls) so much as a pro-Bush and anti-Bush debate... there are many conservatives who realize that his unilateralism damages our relationships with the rest of the world, and those relationships are in fact important, and his spending and war financing are enlarging rather than reducing government expenditures... additionally, why the hell can't the man respect our nation's 200+ tradition of absolute separation between church and state? It was the expressed intent of our nation's forefathers, why can't we respect that?

    by bushsux

Who cares what they say about Bush or for that fact any of the little nutslaps on this board.(What is a nutslap? Is that what happens when conservatives masturbate to porn too much?) It's obvious they are just sheep with a herd mentality voting for Kerry because they think it's cool not because they have any understanding of the issues.(Actually, it's the conservatives who don't understand the issues. For one, the economy is a fucking wreck, no contest there. Two, the deficit is at a record high. Three, the dollar's value is taking a nose dive so all the money rich people think they're saving with these excessive tax cuts is losing value. Four, Iraq is a disaster.) It's obvious that Black doesn't really understand anything nor is he really ashamed of the country or he WOULD move out, never come back and not sell anything here.(I guess anyone who doesn't like Bush or the republicans is anti-American and should move to France. Republicans are the actual anti-Americans and they should move to Saudi Arabia where it's conservative enough for them.) Liberals base their opinions on emotions not facts(I already took care of that ridiculous argument) that's why they say the nutty things they do and why they keep losing the whitehouse and seats on capitol hill.(We lose because idiots like you vote for "Morals and Values" while ignoring the obvious truth that your policies are failing.)

    Water

    by mrdave

Funny you should mention the water, Stvnhthr. Turns out the Bush administration passed legislation allowing levels of pollution in drinking water well above that which is safe for human consumption.

Still, shame aboutt those liberals. I bet their colours run in that arsenic-laced water.

    Reply to Talkback

  • You gotta love these conservatives. Not only do they completely contradict themselves on the issues, they're infinitely stubborn children. The more wrong a conservative is about an issue, the more he or she(usually a he) will try to convince themselves they're right and then try to convince you. Take the War in Iraq, a complete disaster. Over 1,300 American lives lost, over 10,000 soldiers seriously wounded, over 900 American families lost one or both parents and for what? For 9/11? Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. For chemical weapons? Iraq had no chemical weapons. The war is not going to end anytime soon. It won't even end during Bush's second term. It'll drag on until the point when we're forced to either have a draft or pull our forces out. By that time most of these angry rich white males will have skipped to Canada or claimed a disasbility. Yet, in spite of all this, conservatives still love Bush and think this war is wonderful. The same shit happened during Vietnam, it's happening now(remember, a republican won the '68 election too). The economy is obviously a wreck. 5.4% unempolyment rate, record deficits, rising inflation and yet republicans refuse to raise the minimum wage for working class Americans. Republicans like to either forget about this information or regard it as part of some "conspiracy" that the media has against them. These are the facts though and you can't escape them. The environment, the economy, the War in Iraq, you can only hide behind silly "family values" and gay bashing for so long. 51% of voters are on your side, the issues are not. Republicans are against welfare programs yet, of all the red states, only two, Nevada and Colorado, are not on federal assistance.(The only reason Nevada isn't on federal assistance is because its economy relies on gambling, a sin.) Corpoartions including the airling industry actually get more welfare than poor people. I'm all for helping businesses but I also believe we should help our poor and less fortunate too. Republican voters actually rely more on welfare, medicare and medicaid than evil democratic voters do. Fuck George W. Bush, Fuck Dick Cheney, Fuck Bill Frist, Fuck Jerry Falwell, Fuck Bill O'Reilly and, most of all, Fuck all the people out there who are too ignorant to do their own research about the issues and instead listen to empty rhetoric about family values and homosexuals. If you want to sit back and let these rich fat cats manipulate religious fanatics and angry white males then fuck you too.

    by stvnhthr

The inauguration is almost entirely funded by donations. It isn't up to the President to determine the budget, but hey if you don't like something it must be Bush's fault, right? Mr. Dave do you have any facts to back up your water claims? The President did agree to a 6 month extension of time for industries to comply to his clean water act last I heard, but he isn't changing the limits unless you have some new info. It is cool to see so many level heads discussing the matters on this board. You can usually pick out the sore losers 'cause their posts will be full of empty accusations and slanderous remarks, nice to see none here.

I mean he is basically Mexico's bitch. So I know it is fun to like get pissed off and say its all white religious guys fault but come on sometimes it is just over the top

    by anlashok

Do you really expect to sway these conservatives? I mean, really, why do you even bother arguing with them? It seems quite apparent they do not take your views seriously, and they seem quite certain their path is the right, if not "divine" one. The odds of you accomplishing your objectives through complaining are slim and none. So, how important are your ideals to you, your opponent will not be swayed through debate, this I can assure you, so what do you do next? Do you slink back into the shadows and "hope" that in 4 years things change? Do you "compromise," bite your tounge and grim and bear it? Your opponents see as a joke, what are you going to do to change that?

    stvnhthr: wrong on the budget

    by podunk411

"It isn't up to the President to determine the budget"

actually it is. that's one of the few outright policies the executive branch gets to set right out of the gate. It won't necessarily stay the same, but with a republican controlled congress, there really isn't another party to point the finger at as it goes through apropriations/approval.

    Iraq is better off.

    by jackburtonlives

is it really? iraq and iran were both democracies in the 50s but were overturned by the US and dictatorships were installed. this was because the democracies insisted on using the countries' oil for the people. the US put the Baath party into power in iraq and the Shah into power in iran. all this talk about iraq being "better off" is hilarious. the "rape rooms" and "mass graves" and WOMD were all built with US money during the 80s. the UN that the US ridicules so much tried to take action for the use of gas against the kurds but were vetoed by two countries: US and Britain. you can see photos on the net of Rumsfeld and Bush congratulating Saddam and defending his regime. add to this suffering the suffering the US is now inflicting on iraq: 100,000 dead and counting. the mass graves? the rape rooms? still ther only much bigger. abu graib is a rape room and 100,000 dead civilians make for a lot of graves...

    by podunk411

I would agree, Iraq is in complete chaos. Recent polls show Bush's approval rating is the lowest for any re-elected president in half a century, and pollsters directly attribute it to the situation in Iraq.
there really is no great solution to it either, especially with their upcoming elections looking to be a total bust.

    Facts

    by mrdave

Facts? Yes, though you might have to watch or read the news in order to pick up on them... In his first term, Bush raised the limit of mercury allowed in municipal drinking water, nationwide. Furthermore, the legislation that was passed was found to be copied almost word for word from that of a draft proposal from a company concerned with coal mining. Whoops, what a give-away.

Try the Washington Post, if you'd like some proof. You'll find I'm pretty much free from empty rhetoric.

Don't worry though. Exposure to mercury can only affect thing like your kidneys, central nervous system, and unborn child.

The water thing really is only the tip of the iceberg. To opt out of the Kyoto agreement is the real problem. It just shows a fundamental ignorance of wider issues. The US government under Bush proposed a scheme to pay developing countrys to cut their greenhouse emmissions in lieu of the US. These country's don't need a small stipend, they need some sort of industrial and technological infrastructure. To propose a scheme that would actively set back the development of these countries is rash to the point of stupidity. It would mean catastrophe. Just look at Africa and the AIDS crisis. People in African AIDS centers can only use US funded treatments provided they do not mention contraceptives as a possibility of controlling AIDS. That's not really responsible foreign policy. Yet it's very similar to that which is proposed in lieu of Kyoto. We'll do what we like, and someone else can worry about it at a later date.

you're completely right; liberal and conservative in the US seem to be two sides of the same coin. kerry wouldn't have done any differently except put his own handpicked cronies into positions. while real tragedies like the Sudan and the asian tsunami go on, the US piddles away its time, money and manpower trying to force a subjugated people who crave a 14th century theocracy to accept 'democracy' at gunpoint. most iraqis equated saddam with the US; when Allawi "wins" the election, they will equate him with the US too. what sort of democracy is that? the Iraq war will run out of steam on its own like Nam; nothing the liberals or cons do will have any influence on anything.

Pathetic party loyalists have successfully clouded the issues with the backing of their respective big-party money machines. Let's keep our eyes on the prize. Find the pragmatic (and party unaffiliated) candidates running in your local elections and give them your non-financial backing i.e. your time. Take aim at the rich [politicians]...get them in the crosshairs...and take them down.
That being said, Garga will now submit that Spinal Tap's Rock'n'Roll Creation was an under-appreciated concept album.

Kerry would have been better. He would not have been perfect, and he might not even have been good enough to be a "good" president, whatever that means, but he would have been better than Bush. . . . . . . . . . I appreciate the emotion reflected in your post, as I also have a gutlevel feeling that we are at a national crisis, which can only be truly averted with a radical change to the left on almost all issues, not merely significant changes on some of them. . . . . . However I do believe that Kerry would have been a better, if not perfect, choice, on almost every issue and at almost every level. . . . . . . .

you might be right, but it might be too late. some joke that bush is actually working for bin laden or the iranians since everything he does plays right into their hands. bin laden's goal was to polarize the world into radical islamic and radical western camps: bush was only too happy to comply by invading two countries (and counting), isolating the US in world opinion and creating a humanitarian catastrophe in iraq, which the US is the cause of. eventually bush or the prez after him will cut and run, leaving a massive cluster f***, giving al qaeda bases and thousands of new recruits, while iran moves in and brings its influence to bear right up to saudi arabia. i doubt if there is any other ending to this war. You're right, kerry may have been better, but it won't be much solace in retrospect. hope i'm wrong on all the above, but this war has been a disaster on all levels and "staying the course" will only prolong the inevitable.

"The *only* group that is capable of successfully executing a plan to reduce world-wide terrorism is the US"...
    ...
...I wasn't going to say anything, but this is EXACTLY the sort of arrogance that pisses the rest of the world off. Sorry, but it's true. The US cannot keep throwing it's weight around like the fat kid at kindergarten recess. Unilateral action does no-one any favours. There are reasons why other nations won't back the US on certain issues... ... ...
...Any consortium of G8 member states, whether organised through the Arab League, the EU, or the UN, or independently, would almost certainly be more capable than the US to tackle the issue. It's about time the US learnt that the pen is mightier than the sword. But this should be a moot point anyway: The US have never experienced terrorism on a nationwide level, and so the kneejerk reaction is, of course, to stamp around saying "Who did it?!?!!??" and twatting anyone who comes within range. As someone half-Spanish, half-English, I have lived with the joys of the IRA and the ETA since the day I was born. The IRA have ceased all terrorist activity. Why? Because we are TALKING to them. The ETA have started to mellow out too. Why? Because we banned their political party from parliament... oops... Kind of shot my argument in the foot there...

My post stated the budget of the Inauguration event is set by donations, not the Nation's Fiscal Budget; though that would be a fun way to run a country, it might be worth a try just for laughs.

Mr. Dave you do realize the Washington Post has a MAJOR Liberal Left Wing slant to most of its coverage, don't you? But it does sound like you are getting your facts from somewhere. I'll look into it, thanks for the heads up.

the American government hates giving other countries democracy. Look at the Pinochet debacle, and what happened in Iran and Iraq. We set up puppet governments that act in OUR best interests.
