Ridley Scott's KINGDOM OF HEAVEN trumpets its arrival online!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... well it isn't on Apple's Quicktime site yet, but it is on Yahoo in a pretty nice size file that looks just gorgeous. I'm talking of course about the new Ridley Scott film KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, and folks - the trailer is just stunning. There's a part of me that wishes Ridley would score this with more brass, more drums... and less of the type of music he had in BLACKHAWK DOWN and GLADIATOR, but I understand - he's not really making a film about heroes, but of men in times they wish had never existed... and that isn't a time of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. He's reaching for truth instead of mythology - and I just wish... well, I love the fantasy, but then - I've never seen this take on the Crusades before and I'm excited as hell about it. The trailer indicates classic knights in armor era Crusades - and I have no doubt Ridley is going to show the Moors just wiping the ground of these onward Christian soldiers... at least, I believe that's what history showed here... if this is in fact the Crusade I think it is.

played before Phantom of the Opera. Looked OK, but with Legolas in there I had to keep telling my wife that it wasn't another LOTR movie.... ;)

Yaaaaaaaayyy!!! Black Muslims Killing White Christians
by junior frenger
Thats the way it should be right Harry...right? Your half assed political stabs in the dark are becoming dreadfully tiresome with each new post. I have no problem with historically acurate cinema, Im all for it. I believe the movie should speak for itself. But your thinly veiled stab at Christians is down right infantile. Mind you I am an athiest and I know a zealot is a zealot no matter what color they are. They come in all shapes and sizes...Christian, Muslim, white, black, conservative, LIBERAL...etc. Hatred is universal, but I don't have to tell you that do I Harold. Being biased is like seeing with only one eye. Your ideals make you just as much a sheep as any Christian (or Muslim for that matter)is. Here's hoping with the New Year upon us you might start thinking for yourself. Hell it's as good a new years resolution as any.

... in a heterosexual romantic relationship! Hahahahahaha!!! This film looks like it will be another stinker like TROY.

nice
-
C'mon, who's going to be the first motherfucker to try to defend the Crusades?
-
Nobody has made any attempt to express being offended by this film on religious grounds, and there are STILL people here attacking Christians. It all gets so puerile on these boards!
Anyway, whoever, wherever and whatever you are, have a Merry Chritmas. Eat, drink and watch TV.
By the way, T-Devil, you saw Phantom of the Opera and you came out unscathed? Respect. -
This looks like:
Gladiator meets king Arthur meets Return of the King meets Troy meets Braveheart etc.
BUT it is a Ridley Scott movie so there is some hope this could turn out into a fine movie (not like the horrendous Alexander).
But what's with Orlando Bloom popping up in every 'historical' epic?
Oh yeah, and a Very Merry Christnas fellow bastards!
-
Why are they in such a hurry to show us every damn scene in the movie? A nice slow built up is much better than these Uzi-images. Now it feels more like Blackhawk Down than Gladiator and that's not a good thing.

And we got Orlando Bloom?!The gay Elf??? It's like a sad joke

I'm tired of Orlando Bloom (he's a boring actor). I'm tired of massive armies colliding in combat. I'm tired of half-assed, pseudo-Shakesperean dialogue. I'm tired of long lens, heavily filtered cinematography. Let's move on Hollywood. Give us something new.

Is the best combat movie i have ever seen.

I never thought I would say this about a Ridley Scott film, but.

... Kingdom of Heaven looks boOoring. There is absolutely nothing enticing about the trailer. As a previous poster mentioned, we have seen this all before. Maybe I am still reeling from the amazing SIN CITY trailer and need to revisit it later?
-
Medieval epic, Ridley Scott, large production values. I SHOULD be excited, but I found the 'Epic Battle' in recent epics to be pretty poor.
To get epic battle you used to film lots of people, and shoot a variety of establishing shots, maybe some close up battle.
Recently tho with ROTK and troy, you get nothing but 'far out CGI' shots and close up blurry 'impossible to follow because it's the chaos of battle' shots. Never anything in between. :-/
Braveheart did a pretty good job of battle, even if the film wasn't that great. Gladiator would have been flawless but the editing was FAR FAR too fast, there was no flow. -
Wasn't too hot either, so I hold out hope.

Maybe some of you haven't heard of what goes on in this film
by lobanhaki
It's not exactly pro-Christian or anti-Muslim. I've read a review on it, and it takes the standard historical view on the crusades. A dim view, that is.
-
Scott botched Blackhawk Down. The book is fantastic. It tells the stories from multiple perspectives including average Somalis caught in the crossfire and even the enemy fighters, and it was pretty neutral in portraying all of the people featured. The film on the other hand, could've been a WWII movie; with heroic US soldiers battling against a dehumanized enemy whose primary function is to die spectacularly at the hands of the good guys. Of course he throws in a 2 minute sequence at the end showing smiling somali kids to balance the whole thing.
I don't expect Saladin's troops will fair much better in this epic. -
As an elf, sure. As a knight or a crusader, no.
-
I know a lot of you are angry with Harry's somewhat ignorant (as usual) view of history and what may seem an over eagerness on his part to show how the Muslim armies beat the European Christian armies. Well guess what? Even I, as a rabidly red state resident, want Scott's film to do justice to the historical record so people can understand that much of the modern anamosity of our current enemies' is born out of an envy and cultural inferiority complex, moreso than any religious righteousness. The point is that like Europeans, the Arab Muslims too had their empires and today their worldview is forever preoccupied with their past glory of political dominance (At one time reaching as far as Spain.). This is what feeds the fanaticism of so many more in the Arab street than any teachings of the prophet they may have read in the Koran (should they be fortunate enough to be literate). So when it comes to the Kingdom of Heaven, go into the theater hoping for the best and understanding that if the outcome is neutral in it's view, than that's the best for which we can hope for from Hollywood.
-
My God Ridly, would it be too hard to out do yourself and make a historical epic that didnt seem like a mirror image of Gladiator. Mix it up and dont use the same color scheme/camera shots as last time. Oh, by the way why does Bloom still get work in big starring roles? He was putrid in Troy, lackluster in Pirates, and now hes back for this shit.

which doesn't suprise me any. Nor does it surprise me that liberals will misinterpret Scott's film and use it to score what they think are political points. Technically, most of us are here in America as a result of religous zealots who certainly didn't belong here! Keep implying that what we're doing in Iraq a folly, Harry, and we'll keep winning elections.

I didn't know the crusades were fought during monsoon season. I guess Orlando isn't hunky unless his hair is flowing. Did the wind blow Edward Norton out of this movie? I could have sworn he was supposed to be in there somewhere. He hasn't made a lot of movies lately, needs to be seen more. Anyway, this looks good but so did Troy and Alexander and both of those films were disappointments, to put it mildly. Alexander at least tried to take its subject matter seriously, it failed in execution. Stone's direction was good but Colin couldn't carry it, in my opinion. I hope Scott takes the subject matter seriously and not an excuse to just stage neat battle scenes. I don't need the definitive history of the crusades, just accuracy. I am not holding out hope. I wish Harry would stop embracing such politically correct stances. To be fair he is "Hollywood" Harry now and no longer just a fan, so he has to impress with his ill informed opinions. Politcal correction has ruined conversation, art and just about everything good in society. Keep an open mind Harry. Just because you are liberal doesn't mean you are a humanitarian or smart.

PotO wasnt that bad. It was a very nice looking film, for the most part.
I agree with the consensus that Masquerade was a little weak. I missed the fireball shooting staff of the stage production. The Phantom, IMO, was a little weak at the beginning and the end. But, the impure thoughts derived from Christine in the dress she had on for Music of the Night more than makes up for any of short-comings of the film.
Women--garters and stockings just make our XY chromosomes melt. Wear them, and we will do what ever you tell us to do. -
Speaking as a Christian who atteneded religious school, studied the bible and personally knows members of the clergy, I can't understand what the far-right extremists are getting all riled up about. The Crusades happened, there is nothing you can do to change that. The Spanish Inquisition happened too, you can't change that either. History is history and guess what, sometimes the group you belong to was guilty of some dumb shit. Instead of trying to suppress the past, study it so the same mistakes can't be made again. The Crusades are an example of what happens when religion is used to manipulate millions of people to do some pretty stupid things. Maybe the reason why the right-wingers on this site are so upset about this, or any other movie made about the Crusades, is because it could indirectly comment on how the republicans manipulated God fearing Christians into voting for them and their platform when, in fact, their platform mostly goes against the teachings of Christ. The same goes for The Passion of The Christ, which was a good film that had good intentions. You can't rewrite history to please everybody nor should you.
-
Well, we can't all be as good looking and intelligent as the esteemed Harold Knowles. This site has proven that fact time and time again.
Really Play D'oh if you want to take a stab at me you should try something a little less grade school than "You're ugly and stupid"
When Im insulted I prefer that it be by someone with a n IQ at least 3 digits long. -
There are a lot of morons on here. Some guy was complaining that Ridley uses too many shots that look the same. Hello! It's called having a particular style. Something that most major Hollywood directors lack. The fact that you could recognize Scott's visual style is actually a compliment, unless of course you dislike his visual style to begin with. In which case, you must not like film much.

Fark, aintitcool, slashdot. . .only the more heavily moderated sites have the stones to boot off-topic political crap. Of course, Harry's not helping any in this case by actually *starting* this kind of shit. . .but I degress. I love historical epics such as "The Messenger," "Troy" and "Arthur" (the DVD of which I'll be picking up on Tuesday) and am looking forward to Kingdom of Heaven. I've always wanted a vast, LOTR-esque movie set during the Crusades and from the trailer, this looks like it! Then again, though the trailer looks good that is what trailers are supposed to do. Please, mighty Cthulhu, let this not suck! Orlando Bloom, meanwhile, looks scrumptious ^_^ so I'll be seeing this regardless. Toppu o Nerae!
-
he is a good looking actor but he doesnt seem to have much of gravitas. he simply dissapears in films, doesnt register much of a presence. i mean look as PIRATES OF CARIBBEAN, TROY, etc. I dont know if its the roles or his demanour or whatnot, but he doesnt make much of an impact. you watch this trailer and all youll remember is liam neeson and maybe irons, but bloom doesnt have screen presence. its a pity because in LOTR he made a huge impact -- maybe it was the slicked blonde locks.

Maybe it will be a decent DVD or download to FF through, but sitting through this in a theater would be tiresome at best, and torture at worst.

The plates shifted off the coast of Sumatra, massive underwater earthquake, tsunami, 20ft waves, many dead, Garga sad. But don't worry my fellow Americans, I'm sure the Nike factory was unharmed...and they can always find more 8 year-olds who can sew. I appreciate this site for having up-to-date info on a variety of film genres. In general, I enjoy Ridley Scott's films - whether it be Blade Runner, Matchstick Men, Gladiator, or Thelma and Louise. I'll probably go see Kingdom of Heaven in the theater because these types of films are best experienced on the big screen. When I go I'll expect to see a grand epic with good, flushed-out characters and quality storytelling. I don't have the technical expertise but if I did I'd underline the word STORYTELLING. My kid is in bed, the Dolphins may actually win this game and I'm off to bed to enjoy my new Christmas present, a fresh copy of Watchmen. Over Macho Grande? No, I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande. Those wounds run pretty deep.

Republicans and (true) Christians are not of the same ideology. Christians are supposed to be humble people who help others in need, and are not judgemental. How can 51% of America be SO stupid? How many mistakes can one very bad administration make before everyone wises up? Check blackboxvoting.org. There must have been fraud. We're not THAT stupid, are we?

by dewi
I volunteer! For nearly 5 centuries before the first crusade Islam had been fighting a totally unprovoked war of aggression against Christendom, a war which was to continue for 6 centuries more. in the year of Mohammed's death (632 CE) the Muslims invaded Syria - then Christian territory, as was Palestine, Anatolia, Egypt and Libya. In less than a century they had conquered all of North Africa and Spain and had invaded France. If Charles Martel had not defeated them at Tours (729 CE) the whole of Europe (and, no doubt, America and Australasia) would be Muslim today, and the western liberals who bravely champion Islam would need real courage to suggest that women who are guilty of having been raped, or who just appear in public in dress the Imams considered immodest perhaps deserve a milder sentence than being stoned to death.
The Crusaders, in fact, were fighting a war of self defence - in the course of which they admittedly committed terrible crimes, as the Allies did in WW2. But basically theirs was the right side. This would be a very much better world if they had won.
