SIN CITY Coolness Abounds! Trailer Blazes Online At Last!
Hey folks, Harry here... Man, I want to see this movie yesterday! BUT - hell, Robert is just now finishing pick-up shots that he needed for the film. That Rutger Hauer walked the streets of Austin... man, too fucking cool. Anyway, no matter what you can't say this film is safe. It's got a visual style straight out of the comics that I feel is just fantastic, but that may alienate conservative viewers that somehow just want plain jane reality in a theater. The casting is probably one of the most amazing things I've seen in a very very long time. What a fucking cast! And - looking at the trailer - look how damn good they look in it! And how about that Nick Stahl as YELLOW BASTARD!!!! I love it! Here ya go... light up a cigarette, break out the 'jack, and get moody as fuck!

Okay, the first trailers I had seen from this left me with mixed feelings (alot of the stuff that looked great in stills, looked like ass in motion)... but this trailer really sells it. The only reservation I have is Marv, he just looks too plastic.

Fucking Cool!!!

By the way... the quicktime version of the trailer you linked to is crap, it's stuttery as Hell. The Windows Media Player they are hosting (http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/2005/STUVWXYZ/SinCity/trailer.php)is of much better quality. -Half

Point blank.

All i heard about this movie is that it = good. Don't know who made it, what it could be adapted from, any of that, just hype. Hype and one teaser poster i saw in a theater. After seeing that trailer, wow. It looks like it could be one of the best filmed picture of the year. This movie looks like what the Max Pyane videogames would look like on the big screen. Here to hoping that theres substance to back up that style. I love nior, and there are a ton of really interesting characters... Brittney Murphy is a slight pain in the ass. I'm getting tired of her "crack whore" roles. Consider me psyched.

Which Sin City books do I need to read to get the most out of th
by osmosis jones
I recently read the first one (the one with Marv...is Mickey Rourke playing him?), and liked it a hell of a lot, so now I need to know which other ones I need to read before the movie comes out. Thanks in advance for any help...
-
Hey peoples... the quicktime might be ass (for some un-glorious reson) but that music rocked my balls, and made me want to live in Sin City because I have a LOT of moody-ness that I have to get out of the way. Would you believe that I feel inspired by the visuals. How 'bout Elijah's glasses in his credit? -QUESTION: Who is Benicio Del Toro's character? Anyway: DICK TRACY AIN'T GOT SHIT ON THESE CHARACTERS. Warren Beatty sucks cock in Hell !!!
-
Now let's just hope that Dimension is clever enough to have this film open worldwide on the same day as in the US. I'd hate to have to download a film that promises such insanely cinematic visuals.
-
Osmosis Jones read all the TPB's, but the movie is using Sin City, That Yellow Bastard, and The Big Fat Kill for its vignettes.
pencil-man Del Toro's character is Jumpin' Jack Rafferty, a corrupt cop in the Big Fat Kill storyline.
and i kill ninjas. bizzle. -
Del Toro is playing Jackie-boy from "The Big Fat Kill". -Half
-
Downloading this one would be morally wrong-o! You must support the independent artist. OK guys, WHY IS YELLOW BASTERD so yellow!!! I get that he's a crazy loon, but, he's YELLOW! kooky, kill those ninjas ninja killer.
-
I believe the other two books are "That Yellow Bastard"(Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba) and "A dame to kill for"(Clive Owen, Rosario Dawson, Devon Aoki) My personal favorite is the first one with Kevin, that just rocked my ass.
-
As a big fan of Bruce, I gotta watch this one, but I don't know. I like the black and white and the narration, but I'm not so sure about the halloween masks everybody is wearing. Hopefully it will be more gritty and sleazy than it looks and less dick tracy than it looks.
-
Junior Roark, the Yellow Bastard, has jaundice... lets just say he suffered some physical trauma and like another bald brother we knew, it took all the kings horses and all the kings men to put him back together again.
[ikn] -
have you read the Sin City series? the blood isn't ordinary colored for a reason; its not a cop out. i'd like to believe that rodriguez isn't making this for the average movie goer; he's making it for the SC fans, but your AMG's will be able to appreciate it for its entertainment value. to each their own, but kill bill blew.

It looks to be straight outta the comic books, verbatim and visuals alike. Looks cool, I can't wait!

That looks freakin' awesome!!! I have to stop typing to go start the line at the theatre down the street. And dear God, I've never thought of Alexis Bledel as hot, but god damn, SHE'S HOT!!

by jdanielp
Don't BOO me for what I'm about to say, ... but when I read how faithful this movie would be EVEN IN THE WAY IT WOULD LOOK ... I assumed that I'd see more "extreme contrast" style shots, with cinematograpy (possibly with computer alteration) which would be EVEN CLOSER to the look of the Frank Miller art. But I did see a couple of shots that were closer to what I was expecting (glasses/balcony). And besides, I'm looking forward to seeing a movie with so much focus on the visual interpretation of the actual comic book series. (I loved the original, with Marv.) -- It reminds me of how I used to dream of making a PUNISHER movie ... which would begin, in full color, showing the happy family life of Frank Castle ... going to the park for a family picnic in a 1970-something stationwagon (with that classic paneling on the sides) ... and we soon witness the sudden gunfire at the park ... in which his family gets murdered before his eyes ... and to just slowly, ever so slowly, pull the "color rug" out from under Frank Castle. Then to be filmed in black and white, the paramedics arrive on the scene ... and they quickly put Frank, who is nearly dead, into an ambulance. The camera fades into a shot of him being rushed down the hospital halls. Then, in blood red lettering, title "THE PUNISHER" ... and the opening credits also in red, against the black and white cinematography. -- I also imagined shots of the Punisher with only his skull emblem and his head being visible in the shadows ... and other shots of his silhouette, with only the skull emblem being visible. -- And as the Punisher would extract his revenge from each person who was at the park that day, criminals who had contributed to the death of his family, ... the blood would slowly regain it's color. And gradually, the remainder of the picture would blend back into color, too. -- So from my perspective, it is especially nice to see a film with such a color palette. And to top it off, to have such a film based on a Frank Miller comic book series (though I admit I haven't read all of them).

Fucking Rocked!

What I could do with some peanut butter and vaseline right now...

I think every time I'll see Devon Aoki I'll hear her imortal line from 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS from when she races her car over the bridge. That was such a WTF moment. But those svastika throwing stars are funky. They'll have to cut that shit out in Germany, though.
-
Dude, as I said, I'd love to watch this film in theaters. But distributors are retarded. They have films come out in Europe months, sometimes half a year after the US. Piracy waits for nobody and certainly not for major US studios. They think they will beat piracy by sueing BitTorrent websites when the only successful move would be to have films come out worldwide on the same day. And I refuse to accept the excuse that dubbing the movies into German, French, Polish, Spanish etc. takes so incredibly long. Only morons watch dubbed films anyway and everyone speaks or at least understands English. When I'm genuinely interested in a film I always try to give it my money, because that's how I can - in a small but hopefully not insignificant way - show that I'd like to see more product like it. But do these distributors really think we non-US fans will read about a movie on a site like AICN, get hyped up ... and then wait for HALF A YEAR while the US fanboys are creaming their pants in theaters and raving about it on MSG boards. Apparently they do and obviously that makes them total idiots.

Well for anyone trying to familiarize themselves with the material I'd also suggest reading "A dame to kill for" to get a little more backstory on the character relationships. Ah, what the fuck, get em all, read every last one of the fuckers.

Can't agree too much with the twit who said they didn't care for the music in the trailer. I'd say it fits perfectly. Looks like I've actually got a movie to go nuts over for a bit.
-
I'm officialy excited.
I wasn't to impressed with the test footage but this kicks all sorts of ass. -
He would've made a fan Marv even without all that putty all over his face.
-
Amazing, truly amazing. RR is the man, no doubt about it!
-
I honestly don't know how anyone who loves the comics could complain about Marv's appearance. He looks EXACTA-FRICKIN-LUTELY like Marv! Check out the McFarlane figure for him, hold him up to your computer screen and pause on the images of Marv. Roarke is DEAD-ON just like him! I love how Gail (Rosario Dawson) has the identical outfit - and Uzi - she has in the story. And Bruce Willis is born to play Hartigan. To those of you who haven't read these stories, go pick them up NOW! You won't regret it and you'll appreciate the trailer even more so! And I just want to say one last thing: Elijah Wood + Kevin = CREEPY COOL SHIZZLE!!!!
-
You do know that Storm is a black woman in the comics, right? Nicole Kidman is whiter than Don "No Soul" Simmons.
-
is obviously playing the cannibal psycho who lives out at the farm. Great casting! That's a good way to mix it up after Frodo!
-
I agree, the trailer looks absolutely gorgeous. Rodrigues at least has got the aesthetic right. So no complaints there. The visuals rule!!!
Then there -
Wow, this movie is gonna to be legendary!! The look is killer, the cast is top notch, and the comics are classic. And Frank Miller co-directing! That trailer sums it all up. Along with Batman Begins, 2005 is the year of classy comic films. Ignoring Fantastic 4, of course. Constantine looks cool, sans Keanu.

I don't know... looks like a whole bunch of noir cliches thrown against a CG background. When I'm watching "Double Indemnity" or "Laura," I've rarely thought that what they really needed were some monsters and glow-in-the-dark blood. We'll see. Rodriguez is awesome and everything, but I don't know that he'll be able to pull off a mostly-CG world any better than Lucas (or than Rodriguez himself did with the Spy Kids series, which are not exactly his finest films).
-
Grossed over $100 million domestic and was nominated for a bunch of Oscars ( including Best Actor and Original Score ). THe music sucks? Obviously the Academy didn't think so.
-
This has got at least a technical Oscar nomination in store for it. Just a gorgeous looking movie. Oh and "Dick Tracy", a bomb? I don't know where you were in 1990, but I remember everyone loving it.
-
It's the manji, an eastern sign that means peace and stuff involved with primarily Budhism. It was around long before the nazis took it, reversed it, and made it crooked. Travel to asia and check out some buddha statues and you will see most have it somewhere (usually on the palm of the right hand). Thus concludes your culture lesson for the day. Oh yeah, it's also a ninja star that cuts off people's heads (which is sweet).

This movie is going to make a sad little turd-plop in theaters and disappear shortly thereafter. The fact is, to the average viewer outside of the limited Sin City fan base, all this high-contrast B&W and selective colorization and "hard-boiled" dialogue looks/sounds cheesy, like a noir spoof insurance commercial. It's so stylized and arch that it can only appeal to someone who's already bought into it. It's so overblown that the overall message is "LOOK HOW COOL AND NOIR AND STYLISH WE ARE! LOOK DAMN YOU!!!" And nothing in this trailer or the other footage that's been released indicates otherwise. Sorry, but Pulp Fiction pretty much ruined this type of thing for anyone not looking to take the ironic detachment approach.
-
I don't know how anyone could not say that that trailer kicks ass! I was blown away by it, and I haven't even read the comic books. I am familiar with them, and I do like Frank Miller's work. The casting looks great, and somewhat unsual. This film may not be a box office smash, but I think it will go down as a cult classic and be well respected. Awesome!
-
BAHAMUT-KUN, you are living in a whole new kind of crazyville. Hasn't almost every Bruce Willis film in the last five years bombed. I mean, c'mon, Hart's War? Tears in Heaven? The Whole Ten Yards?! Either your sarcasm need fine-tuning or you are living in Crazytown, USA, Zip Code C-R-A-Z-Y.

that does look quite original
-
This movie looks fucking SLAMMING
-
but you're squawking out of your ass. This movie is going to make HUGE money- this cast is too great- the obvious violence magnitude, the style is insane, the hype building... Given it won't make the money of a DOA shit bag like ROTS- but to say it will vanish instantly is just ridiculous... Bring on SIN CITY, BATMAN BEGINS, THE BROTHERS GRIMM and KING KONG... SITH and WONKA can watch out B'LOW me

That was a cool little film. Was it a student film or something done just for fun?

That gave me wood...

90% of this was taken from the short he used to pitch his idea
by krigan
Not that I have a problem with it, the short was awesome. I am just curious if this is a real trailer or did someone just take the short and edit it into trailer form. I just assumed he would not be using any of the short in the actual film.
-
I think I am tiring of Superhero flicks, the ridiculous worship Spiderman 2 got was weird to me. A mediocre 2 hour film with only one major action setpiece is heralded as being the best film ever. That's why I tend to not listen to the fanboys who pump shit up. Sin City looks great visually, but I fear that it may be too stylish for it's own good. I hope it turns out good. But sometimes, filmmakers forget that audiences want to see action on par with the comic action. Anyhow, I will catch Sin City, but probably not in the theater.
-
So what if some people are predisposed to be cynical about this movie? I don't think I've seen so many people getting angry about a movie that hasn't even come out yet. What is it about this one that polarizes? You'd think that entire worlds rested on the reputation (or lack thereof) of 'Sin City.' For what it's worth, I *liked* the stylized trailer, although I'll wait until I know more about the movie before deciding whether or not Frank Miller can direct, whether or not it will "rule" or "suck," and who's a "poopyhead."
-
We do come in different colors you know.
-
Sorry Dick licks but the man just has coolness coming out of his pores....and with RR directing and Frank Miller involved i'm sorry but there is no way this can loose. You'd better be praying to the God of geeky weirdo's that this thing makes a billion dollars so that we can see more cool material make it to the screen with decent directors and A List actors

which I think "Sin City" is going to emulate box-office wise. I just don't see a huge number for this, even if it will be getting my $7.
As for "Dick Tracy," I wouldn't call it a "bomb," but it was certainly a disappointment. It barely crawled over $100 million, when double that was initially expected. Plus, audiences didn't like it. That's why we never saw the intended franchise materialize. -

the cars, the people, marv smashing the door, it all looks so weightless. this movie needs to be "HEAVY" and right now it looks light and artificial. the only actor that got me excited was elijah wood. he looks and feels exactly like his character from the comic. this movie should have been animated. robert rodriguez is too damn lazy and cheap. the quality of his output has been declining steadily since desperado.

The answer is no. His childrens spy movies are great stuff for the kids, but he is not a mature, insightful or seasoned director. His work seems very juvenial and I get the impression he spends more time focusing on gimmicks rather than developing anything truly satisfying. His movies lack emotional weight and narrative. This looks like Sky Captain meets Dick Tracy. If you want to create a gritty crime movie, you have to get outside your basement, away from your computer and get gritty. Fluff.
-
I don't care if the 16 y/o Ashton Kutcher fans go to see this film. It looks like it will be much fun. The only lame thing is that the seemed to have cut out the nudity from the comics for the most part, but I can cut them some slack on this one. The rest of it is just breathtaking and they fully realized some images from the comic panels just brilliantly.
-
Anyone know? Is it an actual song, or was it just done for the trailer? I really liked it.
I think the movie look a little too clean and Nick Stahl's makeup looks like it's falling off of him. Other than that I think it's going to be awesome. But will be another hardsell. -

Why is it that you take every talkback opportunity to share you lame, hackneyed ideas? Your ideas suck. That is why you do what you do and why you do not work in any capacity in the entertainment industry. Sin City looks absolutely kickass. I, for one, couldn't give less of a shit if this or any movie makes a dime. I just care about seeing it myself. I've read every page of every Sin City comic and this film is Sin City in motion. Does it look exactly like the comic book? No. And why is that, do you think? Because this is Frank Miller's Sin City: The Movie. It's an adaptation, sure, but it's also something new and different. But hey, that's a tough concept to grasp.
-
is it supposed to start skipping half way through? this is crappy even for quicktime.

Haven't really read the comics (graphic novels) But I can tell from what I have seen that they pretty much nailed EVERYTHING juts right. Now it's not gonna be the most outstanding thing on the face of the planet, but I have a feeling that it'll do beter than alot of people are expecting.

Hellboy? Puhleeze. Judge Dredd? 2 words -- Sly and Snyder. Batman? Too...Burtonesque. Superman? Well done, but obviously dated. Spider-man? 2 words - Jet Jaguar. Ghost World? Um, never had atmosphere to begin with. I will tell you the truth, I've never red Sin City, but had an interest back in the day when it came out. And if I were to have read it, this is what I would have expected. They've definitely sparked my interest again in wanting to sink my teeth into this story. Music, cinematography, angles, makeup, they all seem to work here. Or maybe it was Alba slinking against that pole that made my senses numb.

I must need to adjust the color on my computer screen, cuz this movie looks like Roberto shat on some celluloid and called it a comic book movie. Come to think of it, that's all comic book movies are anyway - a bunch of shit. Except for DareDevil. DD is one bad muthafucka.

by screenplaywriter
I mean it just has this urban, weird look to it. I mean it looks like fun and stuff and you have a cast of memorable faces and careers, but to me it just seems I don't know...like an Oreo Cookie.
You've got the filling: Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, and Brittany Murphy all playing vixens.
You've got the outer side: Nick Stahl as a creepy, yellow-painted version of Gollum and that weird bulky dude.
And you have the rest: Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, and Benicio Del Toro all in one movie together.
But the whole feel and vibe seems like a dark, gritty, Tarentino-Rodriguez crossover. I mean it's worth to see and check out, but right now it just seems "different." I guess maybe I should pick up some "SIN CITY" comic books and start reading it. -

That'll give you an idea what they're going for.
I too was completely blown away by this trailer. The cars... man the cars are AWESOME! They float over the streets just like in the comic. And our first image of Wood as Kevin... I got giddy shivers. I really can't wait to see a lot of Rosario Dawson in her fishnet bodysuit. -
Because you couldn't be further from the truth. Two weeks ago I was able to see about 15 minutes of this. The 3 scenes were each from a different one of the Sin City series. I would say of the 50 people in the room, about 3 of them, myself included, had read any of the comics before. Everyone pretty much couldn't shut up about it afterward. And it's funny that you mention Pulp Fiction, because one of the critics there that night said that based on the 15 or so min we'd just seen, that Sin City able to pull off with ease what Tarantino had to work so hard to achieve with Pulp Fiction. People are going to eat this up for the exact reasons people like you ate up Pulp Fiction 10 years ago. Cause they've never really seen a movie anything like this before.
