Cool News
Dead LikeDEAD LIKE ME!!And Other News ofthe Dude Who Created WONDERFALLS!!
Lots going on in the life of comedy genius Bryan Fuller at the moment!
The good news? Fuller’s teleplay for the hilarious “Wonderfalls” pilot, so foolishly ignored by the Emmys and most of the other worthless kudo-machines, snagged a Writer’s Guild of America nomination on Wednesday.
The bad news? At 5 p.m. on the very same day, the contracts for the “Dead Like Me” cast expired, and Fuller’s reps informed him Showtime programming exec Bob Greenblat failed to pick up a third season of the Fuller-created series.
“They called me last week and said it was cancelled,” Fuller told Ain’t It Cool Monday. Execs at MGM are “currently trying to find a new home for it, perhaps even the SciFi Channel.”
Now, I acknowledge that “Dead” has been a shadow of its former self since Fuller left it early in its first season. But is Greenblat going to shift the savings into another season of “Huff”?
Don’t feel too bad for young Bryan. In a matter of weeks he hopes to start casting SciFi’s animated half-hour “Amazing Screw-On Head,” which Fuller adapted from the comic book character created by Mike Mignola (“Hellboy”). It’s a supernatural Civil War-era tale about an otherworldly U.S. operative who can screw his head onto a variety of bodies.
Fuller’s also busy creating the NBC hourlong "The Assistants,” about those who facilitate the star of the fictional “Dr. Marty Show.”
Dr. Marty preaches the importance of being kind to one’s fellow man but eventually “shits on his assistant” one too many times. “Think Dr. Phil if he were Bill O'Reilly,” summarizes Fuller. “The outline’s approved and I'm off writing.”
Finally, for those who haven’t heard, “Wonderfalls: The Complete Series” comes to DVD on Feb. 1. All 13 episodes, including the nine that never aired in the United States, with loads of commentaries and extras. I will buy the HD version when it’s issued in a year or two, but I’m snapping up the SD version in the meantime. This is one that must be owned as early as possible.

Enjoyed the first few eps but lost interest. Shame though
-
Greatness!
-
It doesn't suck. They want more crap like ShitGate and Bareback Gayactica.
-
Yeah, right, Herc. This show won't be out on HD-DVD for a long time, if ever. We're lucky we're getting it on regular DVD (where's the canceled Desperate Housewives predecessor Pasadena?). Also, I've never heard anyone call it "SD" before. Oh, and Dead Like Me was a great concept, and I tried really, really hard to like it, but it's just... so... boring and uneven.
-
I don't know what Showtime's thinking, because Dead Like Me is a jewel of a show! I can't imagine why they wouldn't pick it up, and just as things were starting to get interesting. A lot of stuff happened this past season that had me going, "WTF!", and it pisses me off that there won't be a third season.
-
And this is not good TV. It was promising TV, and then it was adequate TV. I am completely indifferent to the loss. Showtime series are just awful. I mean "Jeremiah"! C'mon!
-
Man that sucks. DLM was great. SciFi won't pick it up, and even if it did, it would be a shell of itself. That show was funny because of the brutal deaths and comically overcrude humor. I wished they would have wrapped things up better, but not knowing the shows fate sealed that. What will happen to George's family now? What's the deal with the creapy pet-reaper kid? What happened to Betty from season one when she crossed over? Will Rube ever achieve redemption? Is Crystal a reaper?
-
I lost interest in Dead Like Me as well, it wasn't a show that I developed a driving desire to see, like early Sopranos or even Carnivale. Even with these agencies running things in the afterlife, the overall tone was just so pessemistic and bleak.. I mean it just wallowed in it. I knwo that's the point of the show, but it doesn't make it something I'd go out of my way to watch.
-
I get these cancelled shows confused. like it matters.
-
It really was the best show on US TV.
Every single show I watch gets cancelled; Wonderfalls, DLM, Angel, Firefly, VR5, Millenium.
I am the kiss of death to quality TV
At least The Dead Zone limped into a 4th season. Enterprise is good now so its a shoe-in for cancellation too. -

by the outlander
What the hell is wrong with Showtime didn't they see how good this show was becoming. At the end of season 2 this show was really come together extremely well. Season 3 would have been its best season yet.

Dead Like me was NEVER anything special, but Wonderfalls was incredible. Some of the best writing, coolest quirks, and funniest overall eps. It was cut short in it's prime by the devilishly bloated Gail Berman and FOX, and the DVD will be on MY shelf Feb. 1. Funny how most of my income now goes to Best Buy for TV Shows. It's worth every penny...
-
Sci-Fi wouldn't know what to do with DLM. Put it on F/X. Pair it up with Nip/Tuck.
-
While I won't claim that Dead Like Me was great, I will say that the wife and I tried to never miss an episode. I now have the unenviable task of informing her. Anyone want to take this quest on for me? It may be perilous and fraught with peril. FRAUGHT I say!
-
Ive never sworn in a post but WHAT THE FUCK?! Dead Like Me was a great show! It was smart and funny and the cast clicked so well. What the hell are these people thinking cancelling this show (and not telling us that it was the last season you sneaky bastards!). I mean, we were just starting to see cool things with the gravelings, like when George touched the Ray graveling and he disintegrated, what happened to him and can she do that to all gravelings? Who can replace the Roxy and Mason fights? Where will Mandy Patinkin go? WHERE WILL I GET MY DAISY ADAIRE fix?Seriously guys, pull your heads out of your asses, wipe off the poo and keep this show! A fan has spoken!!!!
-
Anyone notice that right after the Wire was an ad for Dead Like Me? A new one that I haven't seen before:
"Rube. He's dead and he's the boss."
It was a little lame but it WAS new. -
The only reason I kept Showtime was for Dead Like Me. Since Buffy and Angel have been over it's the only thing I was looking forward to. I LOVED DLM. I am heartbroken and feel as if TV has let me down once again. The only pay channel I had was Showtime for DLM - now I will cancel it. Screw you Showtime and your Stupid Huff! too!! Herc couldn't you wait until after the holidays and just ruin my new year?
-
Great, smart, witty shows that just needed to work out some kinks. DLM had some amazing moments (Where did Betty go? What is the real deal with Rube? Will Mason ever get enough drugs?) and some flatter ones (Give Daisy her final reaping so she can go away, bring back Rebecca/Betty!!!!!!!!)
So they're willing to give Huff all the time they want to work things out, but not DLM?
Go to the Sci-Fi Channel. SG-1 only has one or maybe 2 seasons left. Tripping the Rift bombed. BSG is going to do well, except for the fact that average Americans don't like the same shows Brits do. It might bomb here too.
Put Sci-Fi's lame "reality" series (Proof positive, or whatever) in a block and then put DLM at the end at 10 p.m. and clean up the language and references only enough to be on Cable TV.
THIS IS A SMART SHOW!!!!!!! -
Cancel DEAD LIKE ME? You've gotta be kidding me here! DEAD LIKE ME is the only -- ONLY -- Showtime original series worth watching. But hey, it's a well-written dark comedy, so I guess that means it's expendable. Mandy Patinkin finally gets his first decent role since "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." and this is the thanks he gets? Bastards!
-
But I couldn't goddamned stand Wonderfalls. It seemed so incredibly forced.
As for the person who mentioned "The Swan" my wife said she had to watch an episode of it to see if it was as horrible as it seemed from the commercials, and she said it was far worse and was the only TV show to nearly make her physically sick from the sheer horrible premise. I didn't need to watch it to know... -

That will teach them! Then maybe they'll reconsider their position.
-
...and this is why they will ALWAYS be a third-rate HBO. The list of good shows they have thrown away is a long one. Going to California. Jeremiah. Odyssey 5. Hoop Life. Fast Track. Total Recall 2070. The list goes on and on. DLM was pretty much the only time I tuned in to watch Showtime. OTOH they renew unmitigated crap like Beggars and Choosers for several seasons. I've never seen a channel so stuck in neutral. Has been for YEARS.
-
All you Blowtime-only subscribers that now feel like you got kicked in the nuts with the cancellation of Dead Like Me- Now's the time to switch to HBO, and to pick up HBO on Demand while you're at it (to catch what you've missed)... HBO won't drop your favorite show- regardless of ratings (although the verdict on The Wire is still out)... you can come on board and catch Season II of both Carnivale and Deadwood- Fuck Blowtime! The illusion is finally over... What were they thinking??? My belief was that DLM was the main reason people were keeping their subscriptions... correct?
-
...it was the only reason I added Showtime in the first place. After hearing and reading about the show coming I added Showtime just before Season 1, cancelled it after, and added it again just before season 2. Now, just like it's best show, Showtime will remain cancelled (fo me anyway). I had been thinking of adding it back in since I just got an HD TV and it would add another HD channel for me, but now I'll never have Showtime again. Dead Like Me was the show that I latched onto to replace Buffy, and while I'll agree it was a shadow of itself after Fuller moved on, it was still vastly superior to almost anything on network television. Ellen Muth was a tremendous find, and Patinkin is of course, greatness. At least I've got a few more weeks of Veronica Mars before they pull it's plug.

And don't ya think the word "genius" is getting spread a little thin these days? and in the case of this douchebag, it's getting reeeealllly thin. the show sucked. it's dead. get over it. -
Dead like me was the only show worth watching on there. I am dropping that channel like a bad habit. It was the only consistently interesting show to watch on TV, and say what you will about showtime being a pale shadow of HBO, the second season of DLM definitely eclipsed the past two relatively weak seasons of six feet under. But, of course, showtime will fuck itself over, and that's that.
I am praying that DLM doesn't go to sci-fi. It needs the mature content in order to be on the level that it was at, and sci-fi is neither daring nor intelligent enough to have that show. -
SUPER DAVE!!! And maybe It's Garry Shandling's Show.

Im so fucking sick of Herc and the talkbackers praising Wonderfalls. I saw the first two episodes when they originally aired. I can honestly say that show was a piece of fucking shit. Enough with the Wonderfalls already!
-
Ok, so Herc somehow got Harry's consentment to post endless topics of Buffy/Angel writers/actor where-abouts, jobs, etc. Fine, I just clicked on the first one and skipped the last 200 of them..........I don't have problems to say that I'm big fan of both Buffy/Angel and DLM. I waited long for this site to cover it and I truly dind't care if the reviews were good or bad, as long as it was brought to attention (because that would have meant more viewers)..........But really, why Herc should feel compeled to download his grudge over DLM? Sure "precious" Wonderfalls was good and "different" for the average viewer and for that (and a big load of shit from FOX) it was cancelled in a very wrong way. DVD it's due February and that seems to be the end of the story....Yes, both FOX and Showtime kicked the creator/writer's ass with his unique talent, Sad indeed......But you know what it's also very sad? using up a good show like DLM for pity grudges against network executives. Fine Herc, you don't like DLM because your TV god didn't got the staying power he "deserves" but please refrain from putting your tantrums first before the minimal human objectivity that you ought to have...shit even the damn head link it's named Wonderfalls...........So Showtime now decides to cancell it. I really hope F/X, Bravo or whatever picks it up. Tell were to sign the on-line pettitions and I'll do. This hour of above average entertainment (for many not just me) has more chance of surviving than long time cancelled Wonderfalls.
-
Folks,
You can pre-order the 3 DVD set of all 13 episodes of Wonderfalls at Amazon for $27.99. It's slated to ship 2/1/2005. Now I can re-watch the episode with the line "Did you know we get lesbian porn on our basic cable?" and see the other 9 episodes that the crackbabies at Fox never aired. Boot to the head!
-
If there is a failing here it is that Dead Like Me never got the attention it needed and should have gotten from websites like Ain't it cool news. Anyone that has actually sat down and watched every episode of both Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls has very quickly come to the conclusion that Dead Like Me is superior of the two shows. I'll even go out on a limb and say it is as good if not better than Buffy and way better than Angel, and this comes from somebody that has seen every single episode of Buffy, Angel and Firefly. It seems pretty obvious to me that Bryan Fuller the creator of Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls is very good at making shows that work on a short term basis but need help when it comes to make a show that has potential longevity and I think the people that reworked Dead like Me in it

I agree "Wonderfalls" was way overated, and WTF about DLM?
by cyberbeavis1326
I have to give kudos to the people who agree that "Wonderfalls" was shit. It did feel forced, and the comedy was sub-par at best. I tried to watch it not once, not twice, but three times. I liked the characters, but the show was a complete mess from the get go. Sadly, I never had Showtime, but I got "Dead Like Me" on DVD, and love it. I'm sad it's canceled, but i did get to see the final (so far) episode during a preview weekend. They can cancel DLM, and i'll be sad, but give me season 2 on DVD ASAP. I do agree if they want to revive it, hand it to FX, they can keep some language and situations. Plus who knows, it may get big ratings. I say put it on after "Rescue Me" if that comes back. Since I don't care for "Nip/Tuck." If this is the true end of DLM, at least it went out on high note. Sometimes that's the best way to go.
