The End of THE WIRE!!

Published at:  Dec 19, 2004 12:39:16 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Jimmy McNulty never will get Russell “Stringer” Bell. Stringer Bell will never get Omar Little. You may never get another installment of “The Wire” after tonight.

According to Marisa Guthrie’s story in the New York Daily News, HBO hasn’t yet blessed the show with a fourth-season order. And it may never.

Madness. With “The Sopranos” down to its last 10 episodes, HBO needs more “Wire.” A lot more. It’s a great show that’s never crafted a better season than the one concluding tonight.

The relentlessly shitty “Arli$$” got seven seasons! Doesn’t “The Wire” deserve at least four?

One thing I can't figure out...

Why were Avon and Marlo still beefing over corners after all the
traffic was supposed to be moved into Hamsterdam?

The Wire may be the best show ever

    by santos kauffman

If not the best (obviously when the Sopranos is on point it's phenomenal), it's at least the most realistic and rewarding of attentive viewing. Anyone who can afford it please pick up the first season on DVD, anyone who can't please rent them, and anyone with HBO please watch the season finale. PLEASE!? I can understand The Wire's feeble ratings, cuz to try and get into it without starting with the pilot would be more frustrating than rewarding. Can you really say that about any other show? But now that the early seasons are being released on DVD, there really is no excuse for not being a Wire fanatic. Herc is right - with the Sopranos and SFU in their twilight, HBO can ill afford to sacrifice The Wire on account of poor ratings. Deadwood is good, and Carnivale is alright, but I need at least one HBO drama with a contemporary setting. HBO - Fuck the economics! Anybody with the slightest degree of good taste will eventually find the DVD's, put their friends onto the show, and rabidly and vociferously proclaim HBO to be the apotheosis of filmed entertainment. Renew this shit and prove once again your unparalleled commitment to quality.

It wasn't THAT hard to get into...

    by el fuego

I just started watching this season, and while I don't know if it's the best show on television(there's a lot I don't watch...) it certainly is a lot better than the other stuff I watch and deserves more. The learning curve isn't even too bad, as long as you accept that it'll take a few episodes to come to grips with who everybody is and what they're doing.

    here ye, wireheads

    by stigmata

I would loose my mind, should HBO cancel The Wire, feel me? I think this 11th hour bullshit is just to stir the pot; get more people interested. The Wire & Deadwood are the two best programs ever adn if the ratings aren't there, well, that's too fucking bad. These shows should be considered untouchable. HBO would be fools to bank on "Rome," as Jim Rome already has his own show and the genre seems to have run its course. The next thing I'm pooping my diapers over is Band of Brothers set in the Pacific. Anyone know why HBO films are crap?

    avon vs. stringer

    by waynesworld

avon set up stringer after it was brought to his attention by brother mouzone that stringer bell tried to have brother mouzone killed last season as part of stringer's plan to make peace with other drug dealers over the corners in the towers projects. seems that stringer wasn't interested in waging war while avon was in prison and he made deals that went against avon's wishes. and since brother mouzone represents avon's new york connections and would accept nothing less than avon taking care of his own house, stringer's fate was sealed. it out to be very interesting tonight as, in just about his last act on this earth, stringer set up avon with the local PD. looks like stringer and avon were done with each other at just about the same time. perhaps they'll both end up dead when it's over. who knows? either way, i hope it's not the end for this outstanding show.

The end of the Wire?? NEVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by optimus primal

Most shows outrun their creative steam long before they get cancelled. The Wire however is hitting on all cylinders and HBO would be insane to cancel the best show on TV. Marlow will be the new drug Kingpin. Daniels will take over as Major in the Western where he will he will reunite with McNulty. Together they will try to clean up the Western district and take on a new foe in Marlow. See, its not an ending, just a new beginning. Just like the end of season one.

    It's Over

    by boxcutter

Well, the game undoubtedly goes on under Marlo and co., and Bubs is back to hunting scrap metal, but, yep, regrettably, that felt like more than just a season finale. Beadie Russell and McNulty together at last, Daniels a major and out of his marriage, Avon in the pokey, Stringer dead. I suppose they could go deeper into Carcetti's mayoral run and maybe (as Simon has hinted) the educational system, but this seems a natural place to leave The Wire. And if it is? Well, we have 37 hours of near-perfection to revisit when we want on DVD. Wonderful, wonderful work.

    by dagtastic

I have been preaching The Wire since day one, and have been slowly turning people on to it. I do love Deadwood, but if The Wire doesn't get a re-up, especially when after this great season...I'm gonna cancel HBO and use the money I save each month to buy the WIRE and Deadwood on DVD.

Buster's "army awards"... ingenious primetime use of the word "fu**ing" (split in half, into two parts of a scene, with "king" heard first and with "fuh" later)..."$63-HUNDRED-DOLLAR-SUIT!"... damn, this show makes 99.9% of the rest out there smell like month old tripe basted with hairy curdled buttermilk scrapped from a roach-infested plastic jug found rotting in a skid row dumpster.

    The Wire is Godly

    by buggeroff

The Wire could possibly be the best show I've EVER watched. If they don't bring it back, I'm going to drop a growler, at HBO's corporate offices no less, that spells out "Bring back The Wire Bitches!" Hopefully I can clench my butt cheeks quickly enough to drop out a period. Seriously though, The Wire is television at its best and I'd hate to see it go...

    QUALITY

    by cocolopez

that's what The Wire is. QUALITY like we've never seen before on an hour long program- and it never drops off- just keeps getting better. My prediction is that HBO will keep it on- my reasoning is that the emmys will have no choice but to finally garner this show- the critics' outrage has been too collective and strong to ignore this show again- especially the portrayal of Stringer Bell and the powerhouse writing- imagine it getting skipped over again? That would permanently alienate any mature audience from the Emmys period. Anyway my prediction is that The Wire finally garners long overdued acclaim- and that HBO foresees it and that it doesn't want to be the channel that dropped the show that could well become the (finally) justified darling of the next awards ceremony... Jesus I hope I'm right...

    Hampsterdamn

    by vinylsaurus

RichardTheSmith -- Not all the traffic moved to "Hampsterdam", just one district. The smart players didn't put all their eggs into it since they didn't trust things to not go bad, so they had to maintain their corner business in other parts of the city.

Sopranos 7th season a media joke

    by cocolopez

don't believe it. it was taken out of context when a reporter asked Gandolfini if he'd like to return and he said something along the lines of he'd love to- which I don't even believe because he's already been quoted as saying he's done with it- David Chase's only question is whether or not to make this 6th and last season 10 or 13 episodes... But yeah I predict the Wire will be back...

    by cocolopez

...The Wire IS the BEST SHOW EVER- I'd have to keep with HBO even if they drop it. They still have Curb, Carnivale, Deadwood, Rome, Sopranos, Ali G, Six Feet, Entourage and Bill Maher... To me that line up is still leagues better than the regular networks...

HBO ought to do a series of "Sexy Beast"

    by riskebiz

That movie "Sexy Beast" would be a good basis for a series. Hire that writer/director to adapt it for the small screen, get Ray Winstone to reprise his role, get Ian McShane for Teddy "Black-Magic" again and perhaps even try and get Ben Kingsley as an identical twin of Don Logan and it would be a good fit into what HBO has put on the air.
