BUFFY's Whedon Pursued For Fox

I am – Hercules!!

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” mastermind Joss Whedon may write and direct a big-screen “Wonder Woman”? While Fox is still secretly pursuing Whedon for “X-Men 3”??

I tell you it’s crazy enough to be true!

This could be a hoax, but I find it at least a little hard to believe anyone would go to the trouble of making up something this unbelievable!! Moreover, this source seems to have the knowing of much, and is aware that, back in October, Whedon told the world that Fox never approached him about directing a third X-Men feature.

Of course, October was a long time ago. Simon Kinberg (he’s the fellow who did those uncredited rewrites for “Catwoman” and “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”) has probably had time to turn in his draft of the “X-Men 3” script.

So file this under “rumor.” But if it turns out to be true, remember you heard the Whole Whedon Wonder Woman What here first …

Dear Moriarty, Harry and Herc:

I've sent in the odd movie review to Harry before, but never something like this. This is so good, so COOL - and so confirmed by multiple sources (hey, people hang out with work friends), that I wanted to give Ain't It Cool the world exclusive on this.

Joss Whedon is in final negotiations with Joel Silver and Warner Bros. to write and direct WONDER WOMAN for Summer 2006. Joss Whedon. Joel Silver. WONDER WOMAN. 2006. That's right, baby!!! Ain't it cool?

The only possible thing standing in this picture's way is X-MEN 3. I know what's been said, but Fox is still coming after him hard to direct that, and that's a tough thing for a guy like Joss to pass up. But he probably will. For WONDER WOMAN.

Call Joel Silver and ask him about it. I'm serious, this is very real. Negotiations are ongoing, but this could break in the trades any day. Guys, I'm giving you the exclusive because I'm such a fan of your site, but in a day or two, I'm going to send the info to other places as well...I'm that psyched about it, and I think that Joss's legions of fans should know how close they are to to gold-braceletted greatness.

So anything else I can do to prove my rightousness, email me back and I'll do it. Do your due diligigence, call Joel Silver, call anyone you want, and get this news out there. Because you guys deserve the exclusive, and the world deserves Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman.

Keep up the great work!

...then the interesting part of this is that WB is learning a thing or two from Marvel and is discovering that writing and directing talent matters if they want to get some of their DC properties off the ground. Starting with a bad Catwoman movie was a mistake; however, hiring Singer with Supes and Whoedon (sp?) with Wonder Woman would be a great start.

    How do Amazons reproduce?

    by Hairy Nutsack

Seriously now, how in the hell do they get new Amazons on that island? Do they rape and kill men on passing ships? Does one of them spontaneously turn into a man once in a while for some Snoo Snoo.(Yes! I made a Futurama reference WOOHOO!)Do they all come from magic Greek pottery class like Diana did? They can't all wash ashore like that girl in the Justice League cartoon, so what gives? I leave it to you, the intellectualy gifted Talkbackers to decide.

possible answer to how amazons reproduce

    by Eternal Watcher

Wasn't there a Hercules TV movie where he gets captured by some Amazons, and the Amazons (including one that looks suspiciously like Lucy Lawless) trap a lot of men....for the ritualistic sex? I guess the Amazons don't talk about it much, otherwise a lot of men would deliberately shipwreck themselves where they live. But despite seeing SMG as Wonder Woman to open the MTV Movie Awards three years ago, get Charisma for the job.

Because I want to see X-Men continue to rule. Wonder Woman has been in development hell a long time and can stay there for all I care. They aren't hiring Lucy Lawless so I'll never care about that movie. And I could believe this is a hoax because in someone's mind Joss=Buffy=strong amazonian TV heroine>>Wonder Woman movie!

Sure SMG lost a lot from season 1 to season 7 but other than Amy Acker I dont see ANY anorexic woman on that show. Charisma - Cordy Amber - Tara Eliza - Faith Gina Torres on both Angel and firefly The girl that played Marina on Firefly NONE of them are close to being anorexic and even Alyson and Emma are small but not that sick skinny look that a lot of actresses have today.

    My thoughts

    by KingKrikkit

Heres my two cents for free: First she needs to be an amazon not a skinny 5'4" actress (I love you Sarah MG but youre not right for it, neither is Sandra Bullock or any of these other dimunitive actresses). Although in the past I've been against an actor playing more than 1 superhero (ie Halle Berry as both Storm and Catwoman, <<sidenote: Re:Catwoman nice career-killing choice of roles, Halle>>) but I cant see anyone else thats known but Famke Janssen (cmon she has the looks and shes 5'11 WITHOUT high heels so imagine her stature in Wonder Womans yellow, big-ass, high heeled boots!). I think shed make a better WW than she did Jean Grey. Other than that I trust Joss to cast a great unknown, I know he trusts and likes to take care of his friends and actors who hes worked with before and thats really respectable because he gets a lot of talented people the exposure they deserve (I love the whole Firefly cast, esp Alan Tudyk). Xmen would be great because Joss really writes relationships and group dynamics extremely well, but I dont think hell screw up Wonder Woman. Besides Joss is so good someone HAS to give him a great Comic Book property to direct.

  • Just so I can slobber over her juggs for all eternity. Damn is she hot!

Not Wondergirl! In a perfect world, Monica Bellucci would be in that awesome outfit. She is beautiful, stacked, has a booty, and she is 5'10" tall. And she can act. Repeat: She can act. It's perfect. She is also foreign, which could add a subtle layer to her being an Amazonian. As far as how Amazon women reproduce, I have been living on their island for the past five years as their sole source of impregnation. It's good work if you can get it.

But X3 could be classic. At the urging of several friends I've finally sat down and started watching Buffy season 1 and 2. Not bad. I noticed the Whedon directed eps had a nice sheen/vibe to them that seemed to transcend the others.

    by ChorleyFM

I love Joss, but this is up there with a Thor or Aquaman type property that would suck hard no matter who was at the helm. Camp superheroes (without irony) don't work and WW is the campiest of them all, her show is on everyday on the gayest network in the world (some French channel). I want Joss to do X3, do a proper movie. Also the first screenings for cast and crew (obviousely not finished) of Serenity have gone down and although they would sy that they loved it regardless, they did anyway.

writing & directing vs. directing someone else's script

    by Hjermsted

I doubt Whedon will take on Wonder Woman. I've never heard him mention WW as a comic he read nor even as an influence on Buffy. Plus: Whedon prefers working with ensemble casts over solo stars/heroes paired with supporting characters. If Marvel is offering him a shot at X3, there's no way he'd pick WW over that. The real question becomes, how does Joss Whedon feel about directing something he didn't write himself? If Warners is offering him the chance to write AND direct WW, that could possibly make all the difference. --mattro

And there was only going to be one screening tonight, Tuesday. But it WAS taking place tonight, so I imagine in the next 24 hours SOMEONE will send in a test review...

Oh, secondly, I'd vote for Monica Bellucci too -- as for X3, WAI

    by Commando Cody

Whoever suggested her first is dead right. She's stunningly beautiful, she's naturally tall, and given her European accent has just that touch of "other worldliness" to be an Amazon. Of course, I'd be happy be Famke Jansen as well. Lucy Lawless would've been fun too -- but I'm sort of torn there. I know it's not fair to hold her TV Xena role against her, but seeing her on the big screen as Wonder Woman just makes me think I'd be sitting there thinking "Hey, it's Xena on the big screen." Sort of like when Kevin Sorbo did the KULL movie and I just didn't feel like I was watching Kull, but rather Hercules guest starring in another kingdom! And lastly, I'd rather see Whedon do WONDER WOMAN than X3. At least with WW, Whedon would be playing to his Buffy "girl power" sensibility (which personally I find a bit too hammy, but hey, others like it). On the flip side, I'd really rather that Fox waited to see just "how" SUPERMAN did before writing off Singer's possible return to the X-MEN since I would much rather WAIT for Singer to return to do the Dark Phoenix and Sentinel storylines he always envisioned getting to.

I don't know much about Wonder Woman...other than vague childhood recollections of the TV series with Lynda Carter...but I think Joss has proven his chops as far as writing good female characters and telling stories that revolve around them. I could see it. I don't really see SMG as Wonder Woman, though. Isn't she supposed to be an Amazon...and therefore probably much taller/more built than SMG? Maybe Charisma Carpenter would be a natural fit for a Whedon WW? Wonder Woman expert here...but I imagine Joss knows enough about the character to do a good job.

You do realize this is HOLLYWOOD your imploring? Prepare yourselves for the worst kind of dissapointment. I predict they cast a blond, 5'5," 5'7" 18 to 21 years old, probably from some inane teenage dramedy. She'll have big watery eyes and glossy lips. They'll pair her with some tall dark generic LOVE interest who'll be her introduction to "the real world" and will then spend the majority of the film getting in the way, hurt, and wowed at her abilities. The big bad will probably be a woman/girl, whom she's known since youth and the finale will not only resolve/delay the central threat of the movie but would also be a culminating catharthis for or heroine so that she can assume her rightful state of...whatever. ...looked pretty damn good to me in her Playboy spread. Zeta-Jones has definitely got the look down, but is she young enough to launch a franchise with? I like the suggestion someone made of Rhona Mitra. I also think Heather Graham has got the body for it, but she comes off a little goofy. And I too think Wonder Woman is a little too old-fashioned for Whedon anyway.

Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. Or Jessica Simpson. That's what they're gonna do. Me? I'll take almost all of the suggestions made here. A LOT of them sound good. Famke Janssen, Charisma Carpenter, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Connelly. I know she's in Fantastic Four, but what about Jessica Alba? I just really want to see her in that outfit, is all. Maybe she could do it just for me.

    Here's my short list...

    by thebigcrazy

Okay I'm not putting on Zeta Jones for the fact she won't be able to hold this franchise for 3 or more films. One maybe but not 2 or 3. So here's what I think, first off Katie Holmes is not a bad pick for this role, the first thing is that Wonder Woman needs height so the closer to 5'10 you are the better. Has the shoulders for those amazon dresses and my fellow geeks know what I mean. Could be trained in stunt work and with that amount and no tv show means she's got the time. On that same note how about Mandy Moore. Got the shoulders and the hips and the height, okay maybe not the boobs, and better acting ability. If they go short I wouldn't be shock if we see Lindsay Lohan under the tiara as much as it pains everyone of us. Too bad Jennifer Garner is doing too many comic book movies. Leelee Sobieski if your going cheap with this film I think she has the other beaten if they do that storyline where Wonderwoman was defeated and replaced about a decade back. Evangeline Lilly from Lost is another... Take your picks

First of all, I am a big fan of Joss writing and directing X3. In my opinion there is no better one suited for the job after Singer left to do the Caped One. --- But if Serenity is a success, they are going to fast track two sequels. Read it somewhere on the net yesterday, so I can imagine Joss doing scripts for Wonder Woman, X3 and his Serenity sequels (plus all the script doctoring he is doing), but also direcitng X3 would be a dream come true.

Arad confirmed rumors that swirled last week that screenwriter David Goyer ("Blade", "Batman Begins") was onboard the project - "Thor is being written now. Actually, David is going to write it. He is a Thor fanatic for a long time. He's going to write it." The funny thing is, IGN Filmforce attended a convention this past weekend in LA where Goyer was in attendance. When asked, he apparently seem surprised to hear that Arad said he was scripting it - as far as he knew the deal was still only in the works. Goyer added he hopes to direct the film, which is set-up at Sony Pictures. He also downplayed the notion that rumored contender Triple H would portray Thor, saying he didn't think the wrestler-actor might be all that interested in it. by Mr. Profit

She can act, has a great body, and is young. You know they are going to go for a young girl, so why not an athletic one like Biel. I love Geller, but she's way to thin and small. Lynda Carter's shoes are hard to fill. And I know the TV show wasn't the best TV, but that's what older audiences will remember the most. If they don't cast right, this movie will suffer from the Hulk syndrome. Too many fond memories of an old TV show hampering a new movie.

Evangeline Lilly, Garner, and Biel. Holmes has a good build but her mouth and the way she is always biting it annoys me. Lokken will kill herself with Bloodyrayne. And her acting is pretty wooden. Bellucci is beautiful but older and wont be able to make the film a franchise. Who wants to see 'Desperate Wonder Woman'? That's what will happen if you cast anyone over 35. J Lo could be good. I know you guys would kill me, but she's still hot. She would have probably been better as Catwoman. I would have paid to see her do back flips in tight leather.

    by JDanielP

As much as I dream of making movies ... there is no way I'd make a movie ... like this ... without having casting approval. Honestly, casting the role of Wonder Woman can be as difficult (of a choice) as casting the role of Superman. My first insinct, my "gut feeling" as an artist, is to go with Catherine Zeta-Jones. I'd say, "Warner Bros.... Let me focus on making this first Wonder Woman movie a great film. Let me make this with Catherine Zeta-Jones before we've lost our chance with the perfect Wonder Woman. She is young enough that we can establish her character in her prime. And when the movie's a hit, we can still make one or two more, with Catherine. But let's not lose this chance with her. If there was ever a woman born to play the role, I say it's Catherine Zeta-Jones. What do you say we concentrate our focus, for now, on one great Wonder Woman flick. We can figure out what's next for the character another time."

    by doc_manhattan

Artistically, I think they'll be lookin for someone who first and foremost projects strength and physicality. That is not anything you can act out really, in my experience/opinion. Take Sarah Michelle for example: No matter how great she is at those high kicks she will never project those qualities. And that is probably also why she was cast as Buffy, to project a charming girlieness. Commercially, I believe they will be looking for a lead who can raise the profile of the movie. Jennifer Garner could be the answer on both accounts, but other than that I have no idea. Jessica Biel is a decent actress too, and she can do action stuff, but again, doesnt project wonder woman qualities. I doubt they will be going for an unknown though.

WW actresses - it's the eyes

    by rengaw

The thing about Lynda Carter's WW that always impresses me is her eyes! Even today in her infomercials they are so expressive. We need someone with similiar expressive eyes. Ones I can think of are Lucy Lawless, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and perhaps Charisma Carpenter. WW also needs to be more mature and confident, signifying a woman in her 30's.

  • Dec. 15, 2004, 3:29 p.m. CST

Take it all back. Cast Lilly.

by Mr. Profit Lilly should be Wonder Woman. Biel is too tough. Garner wont even be approached because DC wont be smart enough to cast her. And could people stop with Charisma Carpenter? She was good on Buffy and Angel but she's no Wonder Woman. We need someone who is a goddess, not a sex pot. Charisma is HOT. But not someone who can be relatable to both sexes. Remember, Wonder Woman will skew more female moviegoers. They want someone who they can root for. Not competition. Bilson is a cutie, but she's probably suited for Lois Lane, or if they do X3, they can cast her as Jubilee. Or even replace Paquin.

so who is dying for a Wonder Woman movie?

    by Homer Sexual

I really think the comic geek base, of which I am a proud part, has to be behind any comic-based movie for it to succeed. No movie bashed by the majority of comic geeks has done well at the box office, while even nobodies like Hellboy, when embraced by the core audience, do well. I can't imagine how hard it would be to make a non-ridiculously cornball Wonder Woman movie. The right actress, director and script would all have to gel and that's asking a lot. X3, on the other hand, has a huge built-in following as well as many more oppportunities for any director to take advantage of. BTW, I expect Superman to suck but with the power of THE icon and huge media blitz, it will do pretty well.

Evalutating them all, MONICA BELLUCCI is the clear frontrunner!

    by Balaabaribibo

Sarah Gellar is too short. Shannon Elizabeth doesn't have the look at all. Ditto Lauren Graham. Ditto Angelina Jolie. Ditto Uma Thurman. Ditto Lake Bell. Jennifer Connelly would've been a good choice a few years back but not since she went skin & bones. Janssen and Garner were already in big roles in comic book movies. Laura Harring is a decent choice but she's not as good a fit as Bellucci. Lucy Just no. Tera Patrick is, uh, an Asian pornstar. Courtney Cox would work for the Roger Corman version. Kristanna Loken is an actress now? The rest are just inexperienced pretty-faces-of-the-week. Not that Wonder Woman requires a great thespian but it doesn't hurt. Monica Bellucci is a fine actress and has the look. If not Bellucci, then Zeta Jones.

SMG doesn't either. Bilson from the OC is beautiful, and I think she'd amke a great WW. She's like 24, so she's old enough, but my problem is that her acting is a lil shoddy. The problem with WW, is that the actress has to be regal, and a natural beauty.

I should have mentioned I was referring to the "KINGDOM COME" Wo

    by JDanielP

I got to tell you ... I totally and completely understand why ANYONE would chose to direct "X3" over "WONDER WOMAN". It seems obvious to everyone here that "X3" is the easy choice. Perhaps even the "no-brainer". But why go that easy route, ... simply staying true to the artistic style and integrity of the two previous X-men films when you can "raise the bar" by showing that ... yes, even "WONDER WOMAN" can be a GREAT film. Shock the world, that's what I say. -- Being the nerd that I am, such debate brought to us by geek-heaven "" will stay on my brain for days at a time. I gotta tell you, I love this stuff ... and I'm so envious of people who have the opportunity realize such films from a director's chair. (Somebody fetch me a coke! heh, heh) Seriously, I'd love to see a real woman in this role ... and by that, I mean a woman that's not only gorgeous with all the right curves, ... but a woman with some meat on her bones. Not skinny. And "some shoulders", as my wife suggested. (Yeah, we're both geeks.) And for me, if Catherine Zeta-Jones is willing to put forth the effort by hitting the gym 6 days a week (with a trainer), then the role is hers. That means Wonder Woman will already be established within the context of the film, and we will see her in prime action. -- I suppose one idea is to show the story from the perspective of someone other than Wonder Woman ... whether that's a photo-journalist or Steve Trevor or even a child ... or even an entire city with all the townspeople. Whatever. (So many options.) And by the way, for the person who mentioned how difficult it would be in presenting Wonder Woman's origin in a believable way, ... I say it's no more difficult than it would be to interpret "THOR" (which is being talked about, I understand). Let's just hope that if the filmmakers go with an origin story, they pull it off just as well as Richard Donner did with "SUPERMAN".

  • Dec. 16, 2004, 4:39 a.m. CST

    by JDanielP

Now THAT could be something awesome, don't you think? Just think about it. Imagine the possibilities, from a storytelling point-of-view. -- Imagine the first film of this trilogy beginning with a loose interpretation of "BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS" ... where Batman hasn't been seen in 10 years. Superman is mostly a secret weapon, avoiding the public eye and working for the U.S. government. And Wonder Woman has captured most of the world's spotlight ... while new talent pops up now and then, meta-humans and all. -- Then in movie #2, we get the big confrontation between Batman and Superman. (but instead of Batman faking his death, the match is a draw) ... and in conclusion, Batman decides to fight crime in alternative ways. And this film would eventually lead to the catastrophe involving Superman from "KINGDOM COME", with the mushroom cloud. And Superman retires to the farm in Kansas. -- And with movie #3, we get Superman's return. (I loved Superman's return in "KINGDOM COME" ... with him walking in the bar, young costumed characters whispering and wondering if it's really him ... and he sprays his heat vision across the bar mirror and shattering all the bottles, getting everyone's attention, then lays down the law in Marshal Matt Dillon style.) And we also get (from "KINGDOM COME") Wonder Woman suiting up in her God-given battle gear ... and when Superman is studying her sword, in hand, while conversing with her ... Superman is astonished when he actually cuts hinself, as he ran his thumb up the sword's edge. (Very cool.) And finally, the climatic fight which leads to so many deaths ... and Superman looses his temper. -- Anyway, you can kind of see where my thoughts were going. (So many possibilities.) What a great trilogy it could be ... if only anyone had the guts (and vision) to do it. -- Superman: Howie Long (age 44), Batman: George Clooney (age 43), Wonder Woman: Catherine Zeta-Jones (age 35) or Lucy Lawless (age 46), Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!): Bruce Campbell (age 46). -- I could go on and on with my casting choices for specific roles ... but perhaps some of my fellow "talkbackers" would like to have a say.

Also, if they were going to cast a WW movie, it would have to be a relative unknown with goodf acting ability. Not as hard as it sounds. Typical human sticks that Hollywood calls actresses these days wouldn't cut it.

I just got through looking at picks of Beckinsale promoting the Avaitor and I believe she must be on the short list for actresses considered for Wonder Woman. She's had a kid. She is stacked enough. Look at the picks people! Catherine Zeta Jones is truly hot, but just because she's the top brunette in Hollywood dosen't mean she's gotta - gotta - gotta be Wonder Woman. She's on a career track right now that dosen't lead through Superhero flicks. (Zorro Sequel aside) I'm going back to Jennifer C. If the WB is plopping 10 million in her lap to play WW then she'll put some flesh back on her bones. She'll give 'em whatever body they request. I think some of these actresses reset their bodies to a "lean and mean" level because it's a good base to work from/ready for any script contingency that comes their way - be it junky or bombshell. I'm not saying this is the right train of thought, because it leads to dorks like us whining about "Oh I wish I still wanted to fuck her like I did back in the day instead of want to feed her a sandwhich." But it's practical for the Jennifer Garners and Jennifer Connely's of the world. Lohan and Mandy Moore are out because Wonder Woman has to be able to give off the vibe that she at least has been to college and gotten good grades. Niether of these actresses can do that yet. Whedon won't cast one of his regulars because I'm guessing he wants to move forward. (Plus it's the thrill of the hunt baby! Yeah! If we're blowing our nuts over who gets cast just imagine the excruciating pleasure Mr. Whedon is having. -- Not to mention Mr. Silver... "Snoo-oort!" - classic.) My secret casting wish: Rosario Dawson. If not Wonder Woman, please just put her in a tight suit in something every few months. Oh, you already are? Oh, uh thanks.

People! Just give X3 to Doug Liman and quit juggling between Whedon and Singer as if it were the difference between Christ and Moses.

Problem with most of the actresses mentioned

    by BitchNig

There one major problem with most of the actresses mentioned, including: Famke Jansen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Monica Bellucci, Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Graham (whom I adore greatly), Jennifer Connelly, Charisma Carpenter and Lucy Lawless - the problem being... THEY'RE TOO OLD!! The studio/people behind WW are shooting for a franchise no doubt, so they need someone not only looks good now, but has the potential to look good for years to come. I'm sorry, I love a lot of the actresses mentioned above - all are extremely gorgeous, but they're too old already. MY GOD some are in their 40's (Lawless), get real! There's no doubt who should play WW, Katie Holmes!! She's beautiful, got the great rack, and stature, and can actually act. Jennifer Garner would be good too, but 1. She
