Sunday!! Penultimate WIRE!!

Published at:  Dec 09, 2004 11:28:08 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

“Bunny, you cocksucker, I have to give it to you. A brilliant idea. Insane and illegal, but stone fucking brilliant nonetheless! After all my putting my foot up people asses to decrease the numbers, he comes in and in one stroke gets a fucking 14-percent decrease. Fucking shame it’s going to end our careers. But still.”

So many more of us turn to “Desperate Housewives” instead of “The Wire” every Sunday night. And that, my friends, is what is wrong with us as a nation. I was hoping our nation, if not our species, had moved beyond the likes of “Dallas” and “Melrose Place.” And look!

The only theory I can offer is that the people who think “Housewives” awesome may be the same who still buy new Madonna and Michael Jackson albums.

“The Wire,” meanwhile, is a show about big questions and less-big questions. Is legalizing drugs a fair trade for reducing the murder rate? Do some criminals covet violence more than money? Are cops like McNulty deluding themselves when they posit their life’s work does any good?

What will become of the Nation-of-Islam-lookin’ guy who just returned to Baltimore looking for Omar? What does Stringer intend to do about the bloodthirsty Avon? And why did Squeak bother to crumple up her litter before she drops it into the street?

One does hope Bunny Colvin’s creation of Hamsterdam doesn’t cost the man his pension or his retirement job. He certainly seemed to know what to do once Herc (not me! Herc Hauk!) tipped the Sun, so hopefully he’s figured out how to land on his feet.

The season finale runs Dec. 19. Take up valuable bandwidth with your predictions and reactions.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

great show. I watch it twice just to absorb all of it's greatness. Seriously, it is a masterpiece. All three seasons. But do me a favor, watch it in order. Also, first!

    by mulengro

I think Herc knows that...it says the season finale is December 19th, which would make this Sunday (the 12th) the penultimate episode.

    penultimate

    by capt jack aubrey

This is the penultimate episode this weekend -- the season finale is next weekend, the 19th... Herc knows what he's saying - he uses "penultimate" a lot and has gotten pretty good with it. And porking and fucking are the same thing, Barry.

Keep your SOPRANOS. Keep your SIX FEET...

    by roguewriter

OK, I love SIX FEET. I'm not completely nuts. But THE WIRE is the best thing on television. EVER. Bar none. Historically speaking. The culmination of the evolution of the medium is this operatic novel of a series -- and yeah, I take a little extra delight in knowing it's still mostly a secret delight. Of course, I can't quite fathom Herc's utter hatred for DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. It's more TWIN PEAKS or PICKET FENCES than MELROSE or FALCON CREST, Herc! It's funny, freaky and fascinating. And thank God for the VCR, cuz nothing's getting between me and my WIRE! Buy season 1 of THE WIRE on DVD now, and see what all the hubbub's about, bub!

    by stigmata

Deputy Rawls at the GAY CLUB was hilarious. Brother Muzzone is 'Malcom X meets Boba Fett'. I'd like to see him cross over into Tarantino's universe and have a stare-down with Jules. Maybe they'd get biblical. Maybe we'd get a Muslim and Christian perspective on being a hitman, over pancakes, and then lot'sa death (wee!). "He could talk a cat off a fish cart." The Wire really is like reading a good fucking book.

Whoa, I've got The Wire on my mind.

    by stigmata

Where I think the show is headed: String is going to prison and Avon is going to run the game his way. Eventually Avon will reach out to String in prison. "Avon bleeds red," right? Did you see the color of Brianna's blouse? Ox-blood. This season's going to end with an emphasis on "family" over "business." Another sign is String ordering the hit on Omar on a Sunday. The 'Sunday code' is something Avon understood while String backpedaled. String is entrenched in city politics on a business level that will never work. The point with this (I think) isn

    best show on tv..period

    by fried samurai

I think most people who arent into this series is because its too gritty.Take it from someone who lives in an area like where this show takes place, the language is dead on.Me and my friends cant believe how acurate this show is.I think one of the reasons its gotten so good is the addition of writer george pelancanos.Anybody who digs this series should check out some of his books.he's got the goods..peace

    AMAZINGLY

    by cocolopez

this show gets better and better- perfect television. Anyway here's my predictions- for what it's worth- I don't see the end of Stringer Bell this season- I see him climbing up the political ladder through the next few seasons making him harder and harder to touch until he finally slips- and McNulty will be there waiting. Avon is getting his in the finale courtesy Marlo and Fruit. I see Omar and Brother having a chat- ultimately deciding that they're gonna team up to tag String. I see the next season (if there is one- fingers crossed) dealing with Prop Joe or maybe Marlo as the new target... I don't see where the Carcetti and Cutty storylines are headed though- and I'm probably wrong about the plotlines I guessed on- but oh well this show is unpredictable- true to life- People who don't watch the Wire aren't exactly fools- they only are if they know what they're missing... Man I'm just waiting for the day that Stringer hears "The Farmer and the Dell" being whistled... then up come that shotgun!

    Up there with the greats

    by boxcutter

Damn when you Yanks get it right, you get it right. Deserves every piece of critical acclaim it gets and more. Posted a babbling hurrah last year about this unfolding epic, but the same praise still holds true. Casting, writing, editing, sense of place, plot mechanics, symbolism, handling of major socio-political and economic issues - all stone fucking brilliant. Tell me there's going to be a fourth season. They couldn't possibly wrap this baby up in two hours, surely? For more "intensive" discussion, the Wire boards at hbo.com are just a riot - particularly the Fave Lines thread. And after the 19th? Guess it's time to watch it all form Episode 1, Season One again. Whoever said it was like a good book nailed it. But you don't want this one to end.

    Best of the Best

    by razorback

I have been watching this show since day one and I could never figure out why it wasn't being nominated for awards; why its starts were not all standing on the stage at the Emmys. The Wire is proof that TRULY good shows are ignored for stereotypical shows.

    StigMata's got it all wrong...

    by the funketeer

Avon is not long for this world. They've been setting this up since the first season. Stringer's been pulling the strings (no pun intended) all along. Avon was a convenient ally when they both had the same goals but now that String is ready to swim in the adult pool, Avon's just getting in the way. If Avon were half as tough as he pretended to be, he would have whacked Stringer by now for killing D. Avon's either going back in the pen or will be whacked by the last episode.

Personally I hope String bumps off Avon and his sister.

but I doubt that would happen. An hour and a half to go till it's on, on the west coast.

    SNL

    by gypsytrobot

I was wondering if anyone watched the whole show. I saw his opening monologue and saw how badly he was floundering, and turned it off. He repeated a line and flubbed another, I could hear wassisface (plays John Kerry) say something quietly and Farrell repeated it, like he couldn't even read the cue card. Was he high, drunk, or just unprofessional? Why does anybody think this guy is great in the first place?

still the best show on TV

    by thevisitor

Three straight seasons the penultimate episodes have contained major deaths (Wallace, Frank Sabotka and now Bell). All three eps were written by the great George Pelecanos. You knew something big was going to happen. No offense, Herc, but I find your comments concerning this episode to be a tad disingenuous. If you really wanted to promote this show then everytime a new ep aired you could have done a little writeup. Everytime a marathon aired on HBO you coud have mentioned it and told viewers to tune in. But you've been quiet about the show ever since the premier episode. Meanwhile Veronica Mars (a very solid but not great show) gets a plug from you everytime UPN airs a new episode. How can you go and tell people to not watch Desperate Housewives and give The Wire a chance when you yourself didn't feel the desire to put in the effort to plug each new episode of HBO's greatest show on a weekly basis? Your criticism rings hollow. By being more excited by Veronica Mars you show yourself to be really no different than those who are more interested in watching a clever, dark soap opera based in lily white suburbia than they are a gritty, intelligent, thought provoking drama that holds up a light to the dark underbelly of American society. In case you aren't aware despite how low the ratings for Veronica Mars are it will always get more mainstream media exposure (ET, Access Hollywood, MTV, countless teeny bop magazines)than a series like The Wire. So maybe you should have taken more time to spread the good news of the show in what is likely to be its final season. Thanks for nothing. By the way I can't even recall the countless times posters on sites like this dismiss certain films or movies immediately because it has an all black cast or a mostly black cast. The reason, which is often correct, is that those shows or movies are severly lacking in quality and intelligence. Well, here's a quality show like "The Wire" and the white population avoids it like the plague. Excuses thrown out explaining why go go like "its too complicated"; "It requires too much attention"; blah, blah, blah. Well explain then how the equally complicated "Deadwood" does not pose the same problem to viewers? Perhaps the mainstream audience can tell the characters apart easier on "Deadwood" than they can with "The Wire", huh?

    Idris Elba and Clarke Peters

    by jtp8000

If they don't get Supporting Emmy nods and those morons from the West Wing do again, then I am going to have to believe that Aaron Sorkin is still the coke supplier for the nominating committee.

Bradley Whitford, Josh Malina and John SPencer don't hold a candle to those two.

Also, let me add Sonia Sohn in there also. I dare you to tell me Janel Maloney or Allison Janney are better actresses.
