Quint needs your help for the annual AICN Holiday Shopping Guide!!

Published at:  Nov 25, 2004 3:47:21 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here this Thanksgiving Eve with a call to arms. I need your help. Every year I gather cool geek items from every corner of the globe and compile a gigantic Holiday Shopping Guide for us, the geeks. I know that in the immediate future every American reading this is likely to be stuffing their faces with either Turkey, Ham or Tofurkey, but whenever your belly shrinks up a bit and you once again have control of your body I'd appreciate some input on what you think is the coolest damn thing available for us, the geek, this year.

I'm talking DVDs, toys, books, video games, limited edition prints/plates/posters/statues... whatever grabs your attention. I'm compiling stuff from all price ranges, from the easily affordable to stuff for the super-rich only. Check out last year's column to get an idea of what I'm looking for:

CLICK IT HERE FOR LAST YEAR'S HOLIDAY GOODNESS!!!

I've already got some great stuff in mind and have even worked out some giveaways with this year's column (Trust me, it's damn cool). So, drop me an email or leave a talkback below and let me know what on the top of your list this season! If you're a company with something hot for the geek this season, feel free to contact me as well. The more suggestions, the better the article will be! Keep an eye out for the column some time in the first week of December! Now, prepare for the massive food invasion and have a safe and Happy Holiday!!!

Well, obviously, the book 5 ON THE OUTSIDE: VERN'S WRITING ON THE FILMS OF CINEMA should be on there. I might be a little biased because I wrote the whole god damn book. No, but even if I didn't write it, it would definitely be the one. Give that book to somebody for christmas or kwanzaa and they will perpetually owe you one even after they die. http://www.lulu.com/outlawvern

The new Bill Hicks:LIVE DVD is a must own. "But who is this Bill Hicks you speak of?" you may ask. Trust me on this one. It's the best $12 you're likely to spend... www.billhicks.com or at your finer local audio/video merchant. The disc has in their entirety the "HBO One Night Stand", "Relentless" & "Relevations" concerts, plus the wonderful BBC documentary "Just a Ride". To be watched with a "heroic dose" (2 dried grams) of psilocybin mushrooms. Get it for the GoatBoy on your list.

  • Other great LIVE enabled titles are "BURNOUT 3", "PROJECT GOTHAM RACING 2" and "CRIMSON SKIES" ... not to mention the various sports titles from Electronic Arts and Sega. -- And other soon to be released titles (if not already out) which also will have Xbox LIVE play options are "GOLDENEYE: ROGUE AGENT", "NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND 2", and "TIMESPLITTERS 3". -- But listen, ... if I had a child ready for video games ... a Nintendo DS would be cool (for DAD, too). And with the price drops, the Nintendo Gamecube has built up some great Mario titles ... not to mention Zelda. (Microsoft seriously needs to work on their library of kid's games. Now that I'm a father, if I was chosing a system today, I'd probably pick up Nintendo's Gamecube, instead.)

The shopping list and the wish list.

    by robinp

First off, top of anybody's list has to be Spider-Man 2 in glorious shiney disc. I have mine (wonderful, wonderful Friday release that the mailman dropped off today) and I can swear to you that it's even better the second time around. Now then, Christmas gifts....I'm kinda hoping that someone, somewhere (Mrs P, are you reading this) will pick me up a Robocop figure from the new Movie Maniacs series that should be hitting the stores about now. The ROTK extended version would also be very, very nice. Uh..what else...oh, the BBC have released a three disc set of the previously "lost" Dr Who episodes that include footage & episodes from The Dalek Master Plan. All these are from the Hartnell & Troughton era of the sixties. Okay, that's all the practical stuff, the stuff that is do-able. The wish list is, of course a 42 inch plasma screen tv with a home theater sound system.

    42 inch plasma tv

    by speed

i think i'm right, but i could be wrong here. 32 and 50 are the only two size plasmas to get right now. they have native resolutions and don't do interlace like the 37's and 42's to produce a picture. this means that you get artifacts on the 37 and 42.and if you are going to get a 50 then you gotta be about half a mile away from the screen for it to look any good.

Speaking of Rogue Agent, it sounds like a good premise....

    by i dunno

...but it's pretty lame that they're using "GoldenEye" in a completly different context from the film just for the name recogition. Your character literally has a golden eye. Sounds like a rental. And is Bond in it at all? I haven't heard him mentioned in any of the ads. On the toys for geeks tip, McFarlaine is coming out with an H.R. Giger line of sculptures of his work. For you phillistines, Giger designed the Alien and is also a really interesting surrealist artist who incorporates that bio-mechanical look to most of his stuff. The Alien/Predator line looks good too. I'll grow up someday. But not today.

Hey Speed - re 42 inch plasma screens

    by robinp

Very strange - 42 inch plasma screens are on sale pretty commonly in all major electrical outlets here in the U.K. Just curious, but where are you located ? (In reality - a 42 incher would be WAAAAAAAY too big for my study. The mere 28 inch screen I have in here at the moment is pretty dominant, but a guy can dream huh ?)

sorry, didn't mean to make it sound like you can't get 37's and 42's. just meant to say that because of the resolution of the 37's and 42's they have to interlace the picture which means there is more chance of artifacts. the 32's and 50's have a native resolution and don't have to do that. I actually just bought a hitachi 32. was going to get the 37 but 2 friends back in OZ who sell home theatre both warned me against 37 and 42 because of the interlacing.
