New AVIATOR Trailer Flies Online

Published at:  Nov 14, 2004 2:19:35 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... It'll be nice to see Martin Scorsese's epic cinematic examination of Howard Hughes' life in THE AVIATOR, but recently I just picked up the dvd for an old Edward Dmytryk flick called THE CARPETBAGGERS based on Harold Robbins' rather scandalous novel - which was "names changed to protect the author" fictional look at Howard Hughes, much in the same way that most folks seem to credit Welles' take on William Randolph Hearst with CITIZEN KANE. Now... THE CARPETBAGGERS certainly wasn't CITIZEN KANE, but it is one helluva take on the Howard Hughes story. And I absolutely loved George Peppard as "Jonas Cord" - the Hughes of the story. Also great in the film are Carroll Baker as "Rina Marlowe" aka Jean Harlow and Alan Ladd as "Nevada Smith" aka Buck Jones or Tom Mix - I believe. If you get a chance to check it out either before or after seeing Scorsese's version of Hughes' life, I definitely advise doing so.

Meanwhile, Moviefone has recently unleashed a new trailer for THE AVIATOR. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD AND PLAY THE NEW AVIATOR TRAILER The only problem I'm really having is accepting Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes. Hopefully, in the film as the story plays through, it'll feel more natural, but from the trailers - it looks like a teenage version of those Shirley Temple shorts she did for the National Relief Administration where it was little kids playing satiric takes on grown-up movies. And yes, I know Leo isn't a teenager... He just has a bit of that Mickey Rooney, Michael J Fox, Dick Powell juvenile curse in his genes. Oh well, hope Scorsese knocks this one out of the park!

    Trailer Music

Actually to quickly comment on a prior poster -- I'm inclined to think that Dicaprio is most definitely NOT calling the shots on this one, it being a SCORCESE picture. Sure, Leo is big in Hollywood, but we're talkin' Uncle Marty here.... NOW THEN - does anybody know what that temp score is from, used in the 2nd half of this trailer? Thanks

    Why only 2/3 the image?

    by undead03

It's a 2.35:1 film. Why is the trailer only in 1.66:1?

    THAT SUCKS.

    Another Howard Hughes-based film film...

    by johnny smith

...that barely gets any play is one of Max Ophuls's American films, CAUGHT. Check it out if you can find a copy -- good stuff.

  • I'm sold. Good trailer, too. The only thing that worries me is that this was penned by John Logan who also wrote "Star Trek: Nemesis," by far the worst film of 2002. Hopefully he either redeemed himself or Scorsese had a hand in some major rewrites. I'm betting on the latter. Either way, I'll be there opening night.

    Holy Crap

    by treadhead

Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn?!?! That alone is enough to sell me on this flick. The trailer looks 'way good. We'll see if the film lives up to it. Hughes is one of those legends whose rise and fall begs for an epic treatment. The flying scences alone could be stupendous. And I, too, would like to know what the temp music is in the 2nd half of the trailer.*****BTW-- Harry, I'm BEGGING you-- PLEASE don't use that pool/bra/man-breast animation again-- it's giving me nightmares....

Johnny Depp should have played this role.

The trailer does look good though. Scorsese doesn't have the greatest track record with period pieces but this is a 'descent into mental breakdown' story, which he does better than anyone (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas). Here's hoping...And that chick in the carpetbaggers poster is a hot ball of fuck.

Leo doesn't have enough hair on his ass for this role

    by bonkers

Sorry, i don't buy it; DiCaprio sounds like a 16 year-old trying to imitate one of the true badasses of the 20th century. It doesn't fly.

    Thelma Schoonmaker...

    by workshed

...don't know if she's working on this but Scorcese is lost without her discipline. For example... the scene in Gangs of New York where Jim Broadbent and Dan Day-Lewis are discussing the future of NYC and the tension is building beautifully and then suddenly CUT to Leonardo emoting wildly over a crucifix and then CUT back to the previous scene. Totally unrelated and unnecessary and something that wouldn't have occured pre-Goodfellas. My fingers are always crossed for Marty but somehow the influence of Michael Powell seems to be diminishing in favour of MTV. Fuckshitwanker.

Eddie Dmytryk was one of my profs in film school...

    by carson dyle

Dmytryk was a fanatic on the subject of Hughes. I suspect it may have had something to do with the fact that they both had first hand experience with the HUAC. "The Carpetbaggers" was one of Eddie's favorite projects. By no means a great movie, but lots of fun if you're at all interested in the Hughes legend.

Does anyone remember the Hughes TV biopic from the 70's starring

    by carson dyle

I don't remember too much about it except Jones's performance, which was amazing. He was PERFECTLY cast.

I'm looking forward to Scorsese's take on Hughes, but I must admit DiCaprio seems like a strange choice for the lead.

Good call on The Carpetbaggers, Harry!

    by gigaloff

I saw that movie on TV a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. Lightweight drama with lotsa pathos. Very cool, esp. Peppard.
