David Goyer Talks About BLADE, Y: THE LAST MAN, THE FLASH, And More!!

Published at:  Nov 12, 2004 12:34:40 PM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I’ve got a ton of reviews finally going up this weekend, including BLADE: TRINITY. In the meantime, here’s a report one what Goyer’s up to...

Harry,

Just thought I'd pass on the details of a truly enjoyable experience I had last night here in Toronto. And, no, it has nothing to do with my sex life (sadly). Yesterday, I had the privilege of meeting David Goyer -- the writer/director of the upcoming Blade Trinity film and was invited for a sneak peak of the film a full month before it hits theatres.

Before I give you my thoughts of the film, first let me fill you in on some interesting revelations made by Mr. Goyer about other projects to which he is associated:

Y: The Last Man -- progress is being made with the film version of this comic book. David admitted he is a big fan of the book and has been in touch with Brian K. Vaughn (the writer of the comic) about the ending of the story. Apparently, Brian has entertained TWO possible directions for the story's conclusion and the film will take the path opposite to the one Brian chooses for the comic book. This way, should film be made before the comic book ends, readers of the book can still find satisfaction as the story comes to a close. In other words, the film wouldn't spoil it for readers of the book by giving anything away.

The Flash -- David would very much like to see a film version the The World's Fastest Man. Talks are in the very early stages but there is a good possibility he will be involved in some capacity.

Murder Mysteries -- This is David's so-called "dream project". A film version of Neil Gaiman's short-story is very much on his mind. If Blade Trinity is a box office success, David thinks he will have the clout to move this project forward. His inclination is to try his hand at a small independent type film following Blade Trinity.

Batman Begins -- Unfortunately, because of time constraints, David didn't have much to say about this much anticipated film. He did say that the "fans won't be disappointed". That's good enough for me.

Now, about Blade Trinity...

I won't go into much detail and spoil it for others. I will say the film is very much in tone with the first Blade film -- with some extremely funny moments thanks to Ryan Reynolds' character = Hannibal King. He delivers some of the best lines in the movie. Kris Kristofferson makes an abbreviated appearance as Whistler and Jessica Biel does a great job portraying his daughter Abigail -- another no-nonsense ass-kickin' vampire slayer. Parker Posey is the villainess and does a great job as Hannibal King's "straight man". Much of the humor in the film is very much at her expense.

As in all previous Blade films, there is plenty of action and explosions. However, I must admit I'm getting desensitized to all the hand-to-hand combat seen in Jackie Chan movies, The Matrix, or even Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. The martial arts just doesn't seem to give me that adrenaline rush it used to. Don't get me wrong. There's still some very effective fight sequences in Blade Trinity but I was more intrigued with the new weapons brandished by both Blade and Abigail. Abby, as viewers of the trailers already know, packs some nifty gadgets designed to ruin any vampire's day (or night) from the concealed knife in the tip of her shoe to her "Ultra-Violet Arc" weapon.

The film didn't always work for me. I had some issues with the "Big Bad" of the film with whom Blade must fight during the last act of the movie; and I suspect devotees of vampire lore will also walk away with a bad taste in their mouth. And, the ending involving a "switching of identities" (which is all I'll say about the matter) seemed a little trite.

If I had to rate the film, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

-- You can call me "Arlo"

Thanks, Arlo. Nice work.

"Moriarty" out.

  • I heard Jeff Vintar was writing the script for this, and that Goyer was involved as a producer or is he actually making it or what? I second the geekgasm motion, this could be incredible. Jake Gylenhaal as Yorick? A real monkey as Ampersand though, please no CGI!

The man's become a hack. Snipes was so pissed that Blade 3 focused so much on the two new white characters and so little on Blade that he wrote a letter to the studio stating his displeasure. The fucking movie's called "Blade" not "Midnight Sons" or "Nightstalkers" and the man has a point. Look at all the BAAAAAD news we're hearing and seeing about Batman Begins. Please, please don't let him near a Flash film. I like Flash just the way he is and I don't want some vanity-fueled interpretation of a character that's been around for DECADES to influence how he appears in the comics. "Hmm, lets make his costume DARK red leather. Nobody will BELIEVE bright red spandex! And we'll drop the yellow. Yellow doesn't photograph well! We'll make it GOLD!" Wasn't the Bride's outfit BRIGHT YELLOW? Goyer has Joe Chill being apprehended RIGHT AFTER he kills the Waynes, for fuck's sake! And wow, Y: The Last Man sucks. Sure, let him do that. That'd be fine. Keep him busy doing that and keep him away from The Flash.

The Flash has already been done

    by wormie

There was a short-lived Flash TV series in the early 90s, and an incarnation of the Flash also appears on Smallville this season. I'd rather see an epic Green Lantern movie.

Not that it wouldn't translate well, just that it wouldn't be as good and it'd piss off women's groups and dickheaded guys ( I can hear it know "If women ran the world, they wouldn't act like that!". And yes, I would very much like a Flash movie as long as it didn't involve time travel. I don't think anyone will write a script inwhich The Falsh doesn't time travel, though. I hate that shit.

Y: the Last Man, please no

    by flea circus

the best part about this comic in my useless opinion is that it looks and feels like the best of the b-movies from the 70's and early 80's. it's like a john carpenter movie from that era. if this movie were made today it'd be filled with huge effects and rated pg-13 for a large box-office. and david goyer attached just means more pandering, now if you told danny boyle was interested in doing it in a style like 28 days later, where the characters and emotions are more important than endless attempts at scares then there might be something there to get exicted about

  • Your right. These movies are made to cater to as wide an audience as possible. This entails a systematic process of shredding and neutering the Super-Hero, er scratch that,, "Heroic person several million movie goers can Identify with, either a Him(widely appealing popular stud)or her (widely appealing sexy starlet)or a group of such individuals, and they're universe, oops, scratch that, "the real world" where the audience must be persuaded that such "amazing individuals" can come about. Of course this is in complete stark contrast to the reason I and a few others read their stories in the first place; to get the fuck as far away from the "real world" as I could. But money talks, and integrity walks. FLASH,THOR,SURFER,
IRON-MAN,and countless other sacrificial lambs will fall victim to the almighty onslaught of tasteless consumerism. They will be stripped, branded, made into a palatable brew and offered to the populace to drink, and they will drink it. Why? Because; "Mommy, I wanna see that, he runs really fast!"

I hear from a reliabkvle source that the script is not so good. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for some magical rewrites. The movie could be really neat and I hope they get it right instead of rushing things. Go, Goyer, go!

Yo, Darkhawke, you'd think what with reading so many comic books you'd actually know how to read. That guy said that Y: The Last Man is ONE OF THE BEST COMICS EVER. That's retarded. Sure, enjoy it all you want, but best ever? You gotta be shittin' me. " Batman Begins sounds okay so far, though I'd have rather seen Keaton and Burton return..." Here's your opinion: FLUSH! How dare you call yourself a comic book fan, much less sell them. Oh, and SeeThroughThis? Why would Snipes write such a long letter when he's said he doesn't want to be in anymore Blade movies? Hmmm... maybe its because he's actually IN this one and he's pissed off how it turned out in Goyer's hands and THAT'S why he doesn't want to do anymore? You think?

  • I just wish the Flash was in a "Justice League" movie, instead, ... with the remaining best of what DC Comics and Warner Bros. have to offer. (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Matian Manhunter ... while a number of other members would have serious potential to be included.)

    Of course I read comics.

    by silver_joo

  • I think Y is too grand a vision to be forced into a 90 minute film, but I would still be very interested and scared to see what they do with it. I'd like to think Vaughan wouldn't put his name on anything shit, and if it is looking that way, that like Moore, he wants nothing to do with it.
Vaughan is consistently witty, exciting and engaging in his comic books - surely even super hero hacks can see that?

    by homer sexual

Y The Last Man can not possibly be a very satisfying movie because the time constraints would kill it. This would clearly be most well served as an HBO maxi-series that ran for about 13 episodes, enough to develop the plot and characters, but still trimming the fat from the comic.
I really prefer movies on comic characters rather than plot or classic storlines, less to f*** up. For example, a "Watchmen" movie wouldn't be good, and the "Daredevil" film was much, much less involving than the storyline it was based on (although the new Elektra trailer looks good!). X-Men is based on the characters and premise, not a certain story, so it came out quite well, ditto Spiderman.

TheGingerTwit, "they have to do something about that costume"

    by immortal_fish

The TV Flash costume was the bestest superhero costume ever brought to life, IMO. Fully true to its 4-color roots while realistically realized for live action. I kinda dug the twist on the origin of the suit too (get it? red, Russia). The show itself, well, didn't suck, but the let's-watch-Barry-eat-really-quick scene in each episode was beyond grating, as did the girlfriend-of-the-week while the doctor-from-S.T.A.R.-Labs-swoons schtick. I dunno. The Hulk movie has shown how a base concept for a TV series can evolve exponentially when brought to the silver screen, whether or not you liked the end result. I dunno how such a vast progression can be made with this character, but willing to find out how its done!

Wormie, "I'd rather see an epic Green Lantern movie"

    by immortal_fish

Absolutely! MIB proved that the mainstream could handle the concept of an intragalactic police force (if not intergalactic, as are the GL Corps -- gawd I'm such a geek). Sprinkle in some Matrix inspired reality twisting and you have the emerald crusader. Thank goodness that Jack Black deal was derailed. I see this as the next big deal superhero franchise, if only Hollowood would invest the time and money. Iron Man could be big, but I doubt they'd challenge themselves to embrace the very adult concepts that define the character; i.e. nigh-Enron-ish capitalism, womanizing, and alcholism.
