Another Tidbit About GOAL, The UK Soccer Trilogy!!

Published at:  Nov 10, 2004 6:01:19 AM CST

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

Hey, call me crazy, but I want to see this. I was more excited when it was Michael Winterbottom in charge of things, but there’s something really intriguing about the idea of a trilogy of films tracing the rise of a professional soccer player, especially one that mixes reality and fiction like this:

Hey-ho from rainy, dark Blighty.

The Guardian newspaper in the UK today ran a story announcing the involvement of superstar footballer David Beckham (otherwise known to most State-siders as Posh Spice's husband) in Danny Cannon's soccer trilogy, GOAL!

The films, previously under the command of Michael Winterbottom until genuine creative differences between him and the studio over the style in which the movie was to be shot, will cover the career of a young soccer-star played by Y Tu Mama Tambien's Diego Luna as he moves from relative obscurity to the English Premiership's Newcastle United, then on to Europe's most powerful and star-filled team, Real Madrid.

I'm not too sure what worries me more: the thought of David Beckham (alongside fellow Real Madrid teammates and similarly legendary players Zinedine Zidance and Roberto Carlos) "acting" - all three will play themselves as Luna's teammates - or the fact that the trilogy is being directed by the man behind the hideous Stallone-starring Judge Dredd.

Cannon’s been doing his time in director’s jail, and serving up some stylish work as one of the primary guys behind CSI, so maybe he’ll bring something new to the table this time out. We’ll see...

"Moriarty" out.

I mean, doesn't it? I want to see this entire trilogy and with the blech that's to come in the coming year(s), I think something like this will be different, original, and charming. And exciting too. Soccer is a wonderful game to watch, and when choreographed for a film, I imagine it will be all the more. Yay!
