Fox Sunday Returns!! Hank Hill!!Tobias F

Published at:  Nov 07, 2004 3:07:36 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

For the record, the Boston Red Sox had already won the World Series by last Sunday, Oct. 31. But Oct. 31 isn’t part of November sweeps. Last Sunday, Fox dusted off a repeat of the “X-Files” movie. We had to wait till tonight to see the annual “Simpsons” Halloween special.

Enough about “The Simpsons.” Let's see what critics are saying about tonight’s “Arrested Development,” which sees Tobias (David Cross) trying to join the Blue Man Group.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

The good news is that the premiere is as sharp, witty, smart and wacky as anything seen during the first season. The better news is that, with an Emmy victory for best comedy, "The Simpsons" for a lead-in and the release of the first season on DVD, there's every reason to hope for ratings commensurate with the comic genius of exec producer Mitchell Hurwitz and his uniformly terrific cast. … It's not too early to think in terms of a lovely set of matching Emmy bookends.

Variety says:

The reigning Emmy comedy champ debuts its second season with an episode that may well be its funniest. … TV bar's for comedy has been raised again. … [David] Cross and [Portia] de Rossi continue to brilliantly limn one of comedy's more bizarre relationships. … As if opening seg isn't funny enough, coming attraction with Henry Winkler as the family attorney ends the show on a bonus high note.

The Boston Globe says:

… so dense with crooked little jokes and momentary flashbacks that it rivals animation for frame-by-frame wit …

The Arizona Republic says:

What a brilliant, hilarious treasure this show is, a real work of skewed art. It's also the last, best argument against the assertion that comedy is dead on TV. Watch a couple of episodes of Arrested Development and you'll be convinced it's not even ailing. … Incredibly smart about popular culture, dense with details that reward you on repeated viewings, Arrested Development shares a sensibility with The Simpsons. Now it'll share an hour with the show on Sunday nights. In an attempt to boost viewership, Fox has lumped the two together in what surely is one of the best, funniest hours ever drawn up on a television schedule.

“King of the Hill”: 7 p.m. Sunday. Fox

“The Simpsons”: 8 p.m. Sunday. Fox

“Arrested Development”: 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Fox

I was wondering why Fox has been so stupid about airing the annual Simpsons Halloween episode after Halloween every year for the last several - November sweeps, huh. That makes sense in a stupid, no it doesn't really but it does explain it kind of way.
***** I kinda stopped watching King Of The Hill a few seasons back. I noticed you pointedly avoided mentioning the season premiere of Malcolm in The Middle, which apparently everyone stopped watching a few years ago. ***** Simpsons and Arrested D--- on Fox, "Wives" and "Bostom legal" on ABC - makes for a pretty good night of comedy. I'm entertained.

    by battousai

Did anyone else catch Brittany Murphy doing the voice of Luanne when she was on the Tonight Show? I'm a pretty casual viewer of King of the Hill but I got a big kick out of Brittany doing the voice. I always wondered if it was that Brittany Murphy or some other one that did the voice.I like how she actually changes her voice instead of just using her normal voice like most celebrities do. She's also pretty cute as a brunette.

Remember when Michael Jordan played for the Wizards and every game he went to sold out even though he was a sad shadow of himself? That's what the Simpsons is.The golden seasons of 3-6, then it all went to hell from their. This happens with everything, especially musicians. They get succesful then they do mediocre work but the fans still stick around. If you enjoy it that's great but I'll just pretend it ended after season 6.

  • Whenever anyone points out how bad the "Simpsons" is these days, someone invariably replies "yeah, but it's still better than 90% of the other shows on TV." This is a not a good defense. As Ted Sturgeon noted, 90% of everything (on TV or other mass media) is crap. Therefore, all you've done when you justify the continued existence of the Simpsons with this argument is argue that it's only marginally better than crap, such as "Yes Dear."

First off, some are acting like this is the first time the Simpsons halloween airs a week after the holiday when it's like the 4th or 5th year in a row that they do this. Second of all the reason for the delay isn't about sweeps, it's about baseball. Fox always has the world series and since they never know for sure when they will end, they start many shows in november just to be safe because they probably dont want to pre-empt any of em. Personally i'd rather they take a chance because baseball usually ends in time anyway and the halloween special could have aired on or near halloween many times including this year.

I used to be the type to have to be home or by a tv somewhere at 8pm on Sundays(Thursdays in the old days). But now I don't care if I miss it. I tape it if I won't be home. I don't make a mad dash to be on time anymore. Nowadays it is every ep has a celebrity. They know that they need the help because the show is beyond moronic now. Especially since Dana Gould came onto the show. The last GOOD ep was the "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo" ep. Hilarious. It was the season finale of season 9. That was it. NOT ONE decently funny ep since. FOX needs to rework it's Sundays.

the rest of the Arrested Development cast won't get snubbed at emmy season(unless they split eachothers votes and lose to...um...are there other funny comedies?). David Cross got the biggest snub as best supporting actor, but Gob, Buster, George Michael, and Henry Winkler were all better than Hank Kingsley in the first season. Portia is almost a shoe-in for the emmy this year unless they use Diebold machines to count the vote. Jason Bateman might have some competition, especially if Larry David has a season that qualifies.- As an ex-Simpsons fan, I'll watch treehouse since it isn't the same show as the season shows. I haven't been watching regularly and usually give up halfway through episodes if I do watch. Its a dead horse and i don't see any point anymore. I usually use the time to make sure I eat before Arrested starts. With over 500 channels, being in the top 90% of TV means there are around 50 channels with something better than new Simpson on every second of the day. Even if Simpsons was top 99% there would still be 5 shows on at all times that are better than new Simpsons.-Even though Malcolm isn't what it started as, I actually still like it. If they grow the characters and keep them funny it doesn't have to be the same show, as long as it is funny and more often than not it is still funny, although adding the baby is not a good sign, but if they use the baby for baby races it is funny.

"This is indeed a disturbing universe!" Remember when James Earl Jones was always a Halloween guest star? Ah the good old days. Not to join the "Simpsons suck" ranks, just I haven't enjoyed Treehouse of Horror like I used to in so long. I miss the days when they actually shocked you by how greusome they could be with their regulars. And I really miss when they lampooned actual horror movies. The Ned Zone was cute, but Sherlock Holmes? Fantastic Voyage? Those arent Horror movies! They should have lampooned Horror Movie Remakes. We've got Stepford Wives, Willard, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Ring, Dawn of the Dead, and a bad Exorcist sequel to mock. Actually, have the mocked the originals of any of those on Treehouse of Horror? I think they MUST have done an Exorcist episode by now. What about the Omen, or Rosemary's Baby, or the Sixth Sense, or shit even Ghostbusters? My God, if they don't do a take off of Birth next year with Bart and Miss Crabapple I'll give up on the Treehouse forever! *********************** Herc, leaving out Malcolm in the Middle like that is just petty. It's not very funny, but frankly neither were the others. This was a lame weekend.

  • Fox is the most boneheaded network on TV. The Simpsons is not as funny as it used to be, and it pains me that Fox is milking it for all they can because they don't have that much original scripted programming. They let 2 of the biggest new hits on TV right now, Lost and Desperate Housewives (Which are like 'Old School' Fox shows when Fox was good)slip to ABC. CSI was another show that had Fox written all over it, but it's at CBS. Shit even Veronica Mars should be on Fox. But I'm glad, knowing them, CSI would have been canceled after Season 1 because of it's Friday deathslot. Veronica Mars would have been on Mondays against Monday Night Football. They cancel everything and anything worthwhile. And they are blatant rip off artists too. Gail Berman needs to be fired. She has no scripted drama's or comedies. Just reality. Seriously they only have Arrested Development, The Simpsons, The OC, 24, and the craptacular North Shore. And they need to realize American Idol won't fix everything for them. They need to re-focus that network, regain it's credibility, and get some new scripted shows.

Sorry, there aren't any, not on network TV anyway....Sorry, I have no sympathy for you jilted "ex-simpson fans". Yeah, I can tell you are all totally over and done with it too, that's why you are all posting here and rabidly proclaiming your distaste. Millions of intelligent people love the Simpsons, so if you can't handle celebrity cameos or feel that the show has run it's course, DON'T FUCKING WATCH IT. There is a marvelous invention called the REMOTE CONTROL. Use it. And as for the prick who said Family Guy sucks, I have this to say... The show was cancelled after they crammed it in a lousy timeslot, and when the first two seasons were released on DVD they sold over 100,000 copies in the first month. Syndicated episodes of the show on cartoon network were beating out Letterman and Leno for viewership in that timeslot, and it will be one of the only TV shows in history to be resurrected after cancellation. Yeah, it sucks so much they are bringing it back this spring, and giving the shows creator a shot with another animated show. So if you don't like it, fine, but you can't honestly expect droves of people to swear off the show just because you aren't smart enough to get the humour. And for the record Arrested Development is the smartest funniest show on TV Hands fucking down

    Don't Blame Dana

    by fredman

To the talk-backer who wrote about the decline of the Simpsons being producer Dana Gould's fault: If you were familiar with the man's work as a standup and as a writer for the Ben Stiller
Show, you would know he's got the goods to bring the funny. However, the true culprit is Gould's fellow producer (who I believe came aboard ca: season 10 as well) Ian Maxtone-Graham. Mr. M-G has gone on the record as "officially hating cartoons that are too cartoony" and came off of 4 seasons of Saturday Night Live from 92-95 (also known as the milk Farley and Sandler for all they're worth years). The Simpsons unfortunately has become a death ship, in the words of Mr. Mike. Treehouse of Horror XV was the first time I'd watched since...ToH XIV, and it just wasn't funny. I seriously needed Arrested Development to act as antidote. But because of the half hour of going through the motions that preceded it, it actually made the laughs on "Arrested" seem muted. Anyway, if you don't know Dana Gould he's one of the best working comics today-along with Patton Oswalt, Jake Johannsen, Zach Galifianakas and Lewis Black. Root out the real culprit and fire Ian Maxtone-Graham!

    by the beast

If the majority rules that Simpsons sucked this week, especially if it's coming from long time Simpsons fans, and we "don't watch it because we don't like it", you know what's gonna happen? No, you don't because you're an idiot. What will happen when people stop watching it, is that the ratings will drop, and then the Simpsons will get CANCELLED and you won't have anything to force yourself to laugh at. And that's the point... Just because you're a fan, doesn't mean you have to force yourself to laugh and love EVERY episode. True fans will let Fox know what's up, so when Fox is wondering what the problem is, they can fix it and try to make it better. It's not that we don't get the jokes, and it's not that we don't have a sense of humor... it's that the Simpsons is running dry, and they either need to end it, or get some fresh writers on it. I noticed last night that Bill Odenkirk wrote that episode, and that sucks, because Mr. Show ruled, and I know he worked on that. If somebody from Mr. Show can't pull the Simpsons out of the funk, then nobody can, and "THAT'S the end of THAT chapter!" You get that one? A penny to the first one to guess which episode that was.

    by the beast

Somebody many years ago once told me he never liked the Halloween episodes, because he felt it "took the Simpsons out of thier element". I debated him on this for a long time, then, when I realized he was just fat and stupid, I called him fat and stupid, and that ended it. But does anyone else feel that way? I personally loved the annual Halloween thing. I like when people do that. Especially the guys at Homestarrunner.com. What they do though is really creative and funny, not just the next horror movie parody. I don't remember laughing too hard at the Edgar Allen Poe one, but I thought it was really good... and somebody had a brain in thier heads to think that up. I'll give last night's Treehouse this... the animation has gotten a lot better, and was very detailed, and they seem to be blending computers well with the style they work with. It's between old school and Futurama, which, I guess, is where it should be, right? Anyways, that's it.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, Invader Zim, South Park, Harvey Birdman, The Brak show, and SpaceGhost are the best refuges for people who are nauseated by all of the "reality TV" crap, stupid dramas and all of the other televised feces that saturates the airwaves. If you don't like the Simpsons why the hell are you even here? "I DUNNO" is dead on with the whole Star Wars analogy. You people are like the prequel haters who will loiter on the latest Revenge of the Sith thread, just waiting for someone to make a positive comment, so you can batter and assault them with your own condescending opinion. If you don't like the Simpsons, great but why the hell are you here trying in vain to convince the rest of us to share your delusion? Seems a bit foolish to me, but what do I know? I have only been watching the show since the Tracy Ullman days. If the show is less relevant now, or seems played out, fine, but I don't need relevance from the Simpsons. I need random insanity and bizzare comedy. Sorry but Homer is much funnier now than he was in season one, and I don't mourn the passing of "Cowabunga" or "don't have a cow man". So spare me.

And all you oblivious asses complaining about the Treehouse of Horror episode being played after Halloween just make me laugh. So really, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T WATCH IT. The show won't suffer for it. There are still plenty of us left who do enjoy it. Enough to ensure the show's profitability, and longevity. Feel free to complain to FOX if you think it will accomplish something, but bitching about it here is just lame. Regardless, the bottom line is what Fox cares about and I don't think their confidence in the franchise will be shaken by a few complaints. The majority of the people I know who are Simpsons fans love it as much now as ever. Aside from pointless talkback gripes, I have no issues with people making honest criticisms of the show. It's the juvenile hater parties that people engage in on this site that really bother me.

RE: So which exact television shows are better than the Simpsons

    by gheorghe zamfir

I'd take almost any other FOX sitcom these days over The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Malcolm, Arrested Development, Bernie Mac (a show that doesn't get enough credit), and of course there's South Park.

Yeah, Bernie Mac is okay, I wouldn't say it's better than the S

I really try to avoid Fox at all costs if possible. I just can't resist those yellow people from Springfield. Arrested Development is the best sitcom on TV as far as I am concerned. I take great pleasure in watching rich people suffer.

  • Was the genius and I truely mean genius behind Mr. Show. The other Odenkirk did that Kung fu spoof. I didn't read anymore of your post past that.

    Bill is an Odenkirk

    by the beast

Bill Odenkirk is Bob Odenkirk's brother, who also wrote on the show, and was in a few of the sketches throughout the season. That other guy is ODERkirk, and he did Kung Pow and all those Thumb-movies. Secondly, I have no problem with people expressing thier opinions, but I do have a problem with labels. Just because I didn't like ONE episode of the simpsons, doesn't mean I'm a simpsons hater. And here's a wake-up call if you don't or haven't worked in the real world. If you set a standard for yourself, you're expected to meet that standard ALL THE time. This goes for any job out there. If you start doing poorly, your employer isn't going want you. They want you to just as well, and then better, otherwise, you're not doing anything for the company, which, it's whole purpose is to make money. This goes double for trends and pop culture. Those things come and go... it's why some people like Beast Wars Transformers over Generation 1 Transformers. There are reasons shows get cancelled, and numbers is that reason. It doesn't matter if you cut the Simpsons fans in half, and honestly, if the fan base LITERALLY dropped by half... Fox would say something to all those simpsons people to get them in line. That thing would be, if you don't fix this, we ain't renewing. This is how it works. I know it's far fetched, and they're not gonna cancel over one episode, but this is how these things go. I used to work for a comic book company, and I've seen this happen. Titles don't drop because the creative team feel it's time, and T.V. shows don't do that either. These posts, it's just opinion stuff. This doesn't matter. Execs do, or have people who read these things. The Simpsons IS better than most crap on tv, but that's not my point. My point is, it's had a long run, and people need to reflect on that to move ahead. If you do the same gag over and over, it gets boring and dull, like Archie Comics. Trust me, I worked there, and the jokes haven't changed, only the year has. I'm also more certain than not that Fox wouldn't say, you guys are history. They probably have better relationships with the Simpson people than that, but you can't ignore that facts.

    my final note...

    by the beast

you also gotta remember this... The Simpsons is a franchise, and since Fox owns them (i assume they own them) They won't let that franchise fail. That doesn't mean it'll be gone forever, which is good. It's like Disney. They have thier characters, but how often do you see them on tv? At one time, they were Warner Bros.' direct competition. I guess they kinda still are, but you know what I mean. Things go up, things come down, things make comebacks ten years from now. That's it.

    Ratings Slipping for FOX

    by mr. profit

The OC did bad. The Simpson's not so good. And Arrested Development did not fare too well either. What's happening at Fox? I guess spending their money on putting Mischa Barton's big face on the Reuters building here in NYC did not help them get ratings. And Fox is dumb to promote The Simpsons in movie theaters by saying the season premiere was November 14th. Shouldn't Treehouse of Horror counted as it's premiere. Maybe Fox should move The Simpsons from Sunday back to Thursday. Because shit is rough when you are getting beat by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

I hate Fox and would love to boycott it completely

    by cookylamoo

    Those who fret about foreign
influence over American politics should make Rupert Murdoch their number one concern. I mean, How many media magnets are so evil that they are cast as James Bond villains?

I can ignore their slanted news, their inane weekly programming, but gul darn it, the Simpsons still rules Sunday Night. It's may be football's bitch. Fox may hate it as much as they hated Futurama, but I can't boycott the network completely as long as that yellow skinned four fingered American family is still sparing no target or sacred cow.

  • Best. Character. Ever. And whatever happened to the idea of doing a Simpson's spin-off show? I know they did focus groups on that years ago. I think they were having people choose between Barney, Apu and a couple of others. But the best idea in the pot was Itchy & Scratchy. That would be so friggin SWEET!

    Fox's priorities

    by bobfunch

    Fox's priorities are as follows:
    1. Getting republicans elected everywhere.
    2. Football
    3. Baseball
    4. American Idol
    5. My Big Fat Reality Franchise
    6. through 25. Repeat one through five four times more.
    26. They really don't give a shit about Simpsons, Arrested Development, Malcolm .. Yadda Yadda. God love Arrested Development but the paranoid coke-addicted twenty- somethings with ADD that run Fox will lose interest in the show in 3... 2... 1... There. They just lost interest. And now for My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss!
