Brief review of A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, oh and Jeunet and Harry Potter!'!
Hey folks, Harry here with a brief glimpse from a young French film fan that was lucky enough to attend a pretty great sounding screening of A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT - and ... well, I'll let you read, but remember English is not his primary language, he's doing his best...
Hye Harry !
First of all, sorry if you find mistakes in my review. I'm 19, I'm French,
and I don't speak fluently enough english... If you want to us it, you'll
probably have to correct mistakes
I attended yesterday evening one of the first exclusive screenings of A
Very Long Engagement, the news film of JP Jeunet, which will be released
october 27th in France.
I simply loved this movie. This may probably not be the best of the year,
but it is, at least, wonderful. Once more, Jeunet's work made me happy, and
I'm still since the end of the movie... The photography is magnificent, the
actors are perfect. Audrey Tautou's face is always so photogenic. Seeing
her face in a 20m-weight screen gives so many feelings...
The story is poignant. The facts are very strong but, Jeunet's magic is
everywhere. He gives humour to the story, tells us the story of each one of
his characters. Mathilde was born the first of january 1900. Nice to find
her age... This movie is an ode for life, love and hope. We find in this
movie some of the little things, which made of Amelie one of my beloved
masterpieces. And this movie is our last chance to see Ticky Holgado, a
marvellous actor who past away this summer.
The screening means 128 minutes of happiness. Locations are beautiful, the
pictures of Paris in 1900 are realistic, the music is sweet and emotional.
This movie deserves to be seen. Really !
To tell everything, Mr Jeunet was here for the screening, with the actors :
Audrey Tautou, Dominique Pinon and Chantal Neuwirth. They debated about
half an hour with some lucky members of the audience. Jeunet told us he had
today to met Warner's officals to talk about " a little boy who learns
magic and flies on a broom" But of course, he said he wasn't interested in
it, and had no idea about his next movie. But I'm sure it'll great !
Sincerely yours !
HakuHere's a bit more clarafication regarding the Potter stuff...
Hi harry,
I went to see the latest Jean pierre Jeunet's film yesterday night,A very long engagement, which is pretty good but definetely not his best work. Anyway this is not the reason why I'm writing this. Jeunet was here last night,( I live in nantes, the greatest french city!) it was a premiere, and we asked him about his plans. he said he didn't have any ideas for a next movie, but he added that he had a meeting today with american executives about a movie with, and that's what he said: "a little wizard with his broom". Given that his latest movie is a Warner movie, it is not hard to guess who he was talking about. Jeunet doing a Harry Potter movie? well, why not. Personally I love what he did with the Alien franchise (I know maybe people not, fuck them;-)). Of course there's nothing official, maybe he won't do it. Remember he had been approached to direct Catwoman, but he didn't accept it cause the script was pretty bad to him.
Unfortunately, not bad enough for this Pitof fucker!!!! I guess AICN will look for news about it, but damn, that could be good.
if you use this call me Marsellus

"a little boy who learns magic and flies on a broom"
hmm... sounds like the new Superman movie. -
yeah, juenet is the man, if he did harry potter it would rule, as far as the positive alien resurrection thing, the only thing good about that movie was the camera work, but whatev.
-
Look, I love Jeunet's work for the most part, but when he tried his hand at an established franchise -- Alien -- it was like he was aiming to destroy the whole farking thing.
-
On the other hand, if you're going French, why not Luc Besson? I'd love to see him helm a HP flick!
-
yeah I have to rent amelie again.

Sam Raimi for Goblet of Fire, Burton for Order of the Phoenix
by filker-tom
And then we could have an ass-kicking wrap-up with Gilliam on the Half Blood Prince and Spielberg for Book 7.

Mike "I Shoot Bland Shit" Newell is directing "Goblet of Fore,"

...and Mira Nair may be directing "Order of the Phoenix." As much as those two choices suck, it could be worse (imagine Paul 'Wholly Shit' Anderson as the cinematic headmaster of Hogwarts, or better yet -- don't).

Dear God, have we not yet learned NOT to give the French license over American movies? Alien Resurrection was crap! Amelie was cute but still had that hyperkinetic European "art" look that would be disdained here in America if an American director did it. All that over the top acting, camera work and editing. Are we really this much of an A.D.D. society that we have to have our visuals ramrodded down our throats? What's next? The Hobbit directed by Luc Besson? God help us.

Harry Potter is a BRITISH property, you twat.
-
And that's MISTER Twat, if you please.
-
...about the Alien films is that despite the varying quality, they all have a very distinctive texture and atmosphere despite belonging to the same series. I think Jeunot doing a Potter film is quite intriguing, actually. It's certain to leave a more memorable mark on the series than the insipid Newell will. Oh, and speaking of Paul WS Anderson, according to Dark Horizons he's been hired to pen the next Alien film.
-
Harry Potter is British property in as much as the author refuses to have any one but Brit's portraying the British characters. The first two films were directed by an American, and the third by a Spaniard. The fourth is being directed by a Brit. Get your shit straight before you post it.
-
If anyone cares, I've heard two reports that the "Hot band of the minute", Franz Ferdinand is doing music for the next Potter film, and may appear in the movie as well. good for them I guess, but personally I'm kinda' sick of hearing them on the radio.
-
Before you keep getting all high and mighty...you might want to take your own advice and "Get your shit straight before you post it"...Alfonso Cuar

From Webster's Unabridged:

...but a Spaniard, if the word is used correctly, *is* a native of Spain. Now, as one of those "white Mexicans" that someone reffered to in this talkback (and by Mexican I mean born-in-Mexico not born-from-Mexican-parents-in-the-U.S.-or-other...I wouldn't want to confuse you) I think I am sufficiently informed about how a term like that is used. So unless you're applying a picturesque colloquialism, you are, in fact, as wrong as licking road kill (delicious as it may look). Now, even if your argument held any water, I'm willing to wager that our dear pal DansLaLuna was not trying to showcase his knowledge of the subtleties of language, but rather speaking like a pompous ass, which, in turn, just makes me want to answer in kind. Only in an informed manner. :)

Jeunet made the film look good, and that was pretty much all he was able to do. The rest of it was out of his hands.>>>Personally, I reckon a traditionally British, or at least Western European, style is exactly what the Harry Potter films need. Azkaban looked great, but it wasn't Harry Potter (same deal with Alien Resurrection, actually). Despite how much WB (well, America) has bastardised the series, it IS British. You can't just graft Americanisms onto a British series. That's what sucked about the first two HP movies (among other things) - you had this premise of kids being sent off to a boarding school in this castle with all the traditional British elements - Houses, uniforms, Masters etc. - but in this completely Americanised film. It just don't work!

Monkey Butler, please don't compare "Alien Resurrection" to "Azk
by smarkjobber
The problem with the fourth "Alien" is that it advanced the visual aspect, but totally botched the overall tone. I attribute that to Jeunet bringing his French sensibility to the project. "Azkaban," however, advances the visual lexicon of the series without betraying the franchise (others disagree, but to me...and Rowling...and critics, Azkaban" is the best "HP" thus far). I wouldn't want Jeunet to direct a "Potter" for the same reason I wouldn't want Tim Burton handling one...they are two directors who *would* probably change the series drastically to suit their artistic needs.
-
I don't get it, why are they getting somebody else to score the next movie? He surprised me with his score to Azkaban, and now they're ditching him? I was looking forward to Goblet of Fire because it's my favorite of the books, but I am not encouraged by most of what I've heard about it. Brendan Gleason as Mad Eye Moody? What a stupid idea, he's Hagrid's brother if he's anything.
-
Drath, you're the bearer of bad news, man. Patrick Doyle?! Bland composer. When I hear his name I think of stuffy British period pieces. This is sad, because as you pointed out, Williams' "Azkaban" score was the best of the series. I'm sure he has his hands full with "Episode III" and "War of the Worlds" and etc. That's really too bad.
-
I'm just disappointed Williams isn't doing "Goblet." Doyle may be serviceable, but by no means am I anticipating his score, you know? I'll give Doyle the benefit of a doubt before Newell.
-
...that would be worse -- that would be grounds for wrist slicing.
