John K. At The Virgin Megastore!!
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Anyone who is a fan of the original run of REN & STIMPY has got to be excited by the news that the DVD of the first two seasons is coming out today. If you’re in LA, though, it gets better. You can go and get John K. to sign the disc for you this tonight. Check it out:
WHAT: Paramount Home Entertainment invites you to meet “Ren & Stimpy” creator John Kricfalusi, when he visits the Los Angeles – Virgin Megastore on Sunset Blvd. John will meet fans and sign copies of the REN & STIMPY: THE COMPLETE FIRST & SECOND SEASONS – UNCUT DVD, which will be released for the first time on Tuesday, October 12.
WHEN: Tuesday, October 12, 2004
7:00 – 9:00 PM/PT
WHERE: Virgin Megastore (Sunset Blvd. & Crescent Heights)
8000 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90046
THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW: THE COMPLETE FIRST AND SECOND SEASONS -- UNCUT comes to DVD on October 12, from Paramount Home Entertainment, and includes over 30 classic, over-the-top episodes such as “Man’s Best Friend,” the rarely seen “banned” episode that became an instant animation cult classic and “Stimpy’s Invention,” recognized by many fans as one of the best episodes created. Special features also include a featurette “Ren & Stimpy: In the Beginning”; audio commentary on six episodes by the original Spumco team; storyboard and Spumco image gallery; Sven Höek pencil test and more! I’ve heard some speculation about whether these episodes are or are not actually the “uncut” versions, and some grousing from fans. Here’s how John K. explained the situation in a recent chat room session:
Hey folks
I'm as surprised as you are that there are still some edits in the cartoons. Blame Nickelodeon years ago! Don't blame the producers of the DVD.
We put back every scene that I was aware was missing. Nick must have cut more scenes out long after I stopped watching the show.
But, we put a lot of cool stuff back in that no one ever saw-scenes from Sven Hoek that never aired-George Liquor's bobbed tail in Dog Show-hey all of Man's Best Friend!
We also did lots of commentaries over the cartoons and there are interviews with me and Eddie Fitzgerald, there is original artwork.
Buy this damn thing. I put in as much cool stuff as I could for you. Buy it and maybe Spike will order new episodes!
Maybe I will consult with you to restore the episodes you found that still has cuts and we'll put the missing scenes on a website for you, or run them uncut on Spkie.
If every show is not completely intact it's because long ago Nick misplaced or lost the originals, but I restored the ones I knew had cuts, ok?
So if you review the set on Amazon, say it's great and and talk about the good stuff first! Then you can mention that there are still some edits, but it's definitely worth getting!
Maybe we can have a chat about it tomorrow night if someone contacts me to set it up.
Your pal,
John K. Sounds good to me. It should be a lovely box set, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy this week.
"Moriarty" out.

They shouldn't have released this with the word "UNCUT!" in big,
by osmosis jones
It isn't even "offensive" material that's missing (like that old guy in the bathtub whistling "Hall Of The Mountain King"), so WTF? I hope someone at the signing really takes Kricfaulusi to task for this blunder.

The reason Spike didn't order any more from J.K., was because the new episodes were terrible. John was trying way to hard to be like the old show. While I am a huge fan of the first two seasons, the only way to get me back on board with new stuff, would be to at least grow a little bit. Try and reinvent the characters. I watched the new episodes, hoping John might have a brash new outlook on things. John is older now and surely he has developed new ideas and a new direction to take the show. NOPE! Same stuff, but this time not funny. I think he is so demented now that he just thinks being strange is funny. The old fans of the show are all growns up now. They are smarter and a little bit more savy. They want nostalgia, but they want substance as well. Look at Aqua Teen Hunger Force. There is nothing to that show as far as animation is cncerned, and it is very strange, but it has substance. They take the characters places new, they explore different themes, and it is funny. Even the bad episodes are funnier then any of the new episode of R and S. Don't get me wrong I AM A BIG FAN OF REN AND STIMPY! I visited Spumco once. I have every early episode on tape. I just want a little thought put into the new stuff. A farting boogar was funny 10 years ago, but please watch South Park, it's crued, but smart crued. This is a great chance to reclaim that crown. You are the fucking Beatles or crued cartoons. Every single adult animated cartoon owes it's exposed balls to you guys. Give us something to watch and to fall in love with again. Thanks.

If it weren't for John K, we wouldn't have shows like 'Dexter's Lab', 'Johnny Bravo', 'The Powerpuff Girls', 'South Park', 'Harvey Birdman', and 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force'. Heck, even imitators like '2 Stupid Dogs', and 'Schnookums & Meat' were pretty funny, too. I feel sorry for the current generation of kids. All they get is either some anime crap thats made to sell toys, or some 'teen slut' garbage. They'll never experience the joy, and rapture of spontaniously funny cartoons that didn't have some half baked moral to preach, or some worthless toy to sell. (My kids are watching 'Yu-Gi-Mon Z', and 'Vally Girl Spies'! CALL THE POLICE!) As Mr. Horse would say, 'No sir, I don't like it'!

I am with you, the republicans are stupid, but this thread is about the gent who created Ren and Stimpy. Wrong John K. No big deal.

Wow, what a good point. I can't believe I haven't heard anyone bring that up before... and I listen to Air America everyday. 10 points, Doc!

the aim of REN AND STIMPY was really more to make you squeam than laugh, and I think the new episodes accomplish this brilliantly. Are they as good as the first season episodes or recent shows like STRANGERS WITH CANDY? No, but they're still better than just about anything else on cable or network TV (with the possible exception of FILM SCHOOL on the Independent Film Channel; damn that's a great show)

by vikingkitty
Will he be joined by his sidekick, Tortboy, who will sue the pants off of any productive member of society in his schemes to get rich quick?

So knock it off with the political crap. There are other threads for that, this is about the creater of Ren and Stimpy and has nothing to do with politics or the upcoming election, so vikinkitty needs to take the propaganda elsewhere.

johnk didn't get fired from Nickleodeon because of anything other than his own ego and arrogance. He want nearly double over budget on several shows and WAY over schedule. He's been in the "poor me" mode ever since. It's a LIE. And he hasn't made a funny cartoon in a decade.

When's the DVD boxset out in the UK?
