Pixar reigns. PDI has got a loooong way to go to catch up. The difference between the two companies is that Pixar relishes in the details of character and story, and PDI is all surface and reference. (BTW, "Bug's Life" > "Antz," no matter what anyone says)

    CGI is overrated!

    by mbaker

When the hell is someone gonna grow some balls, and make a good 2D animated feature? Just because CGI is hot dosen't mean it's the end all, be all to animation! The folks at Pixar know how to make good films, but why the hell can't the rest of the animation community learn from them? If Disney would learn from Pixar, they wouldn't need to shut doen their animation studio.

Monster's Inc. did not impress me. When it was first in theaters, I had to choose between seeing it with my mom and sister, or seeing Fellowship of the Ring with my dad and brother...The choice was obviously in the favor of the latter. As for woes over the FF, I just read that those pics of Michael Chiklis (spelled right?) are pre-total transformation Thing.

    by frankdrebin

OSMOSIS JONES had a heckuva cast and that tanked. Somehow, the SHARK TALE trailers make me cringe, not laugh. It's like they're trying too hard. And the little kids are probably burned out on FINDING NEMO by now, so I don't see them insisting that their parents take them to the new "DeNiro/Scorsese collaboration". I chuckled more at the so-bad-it's-good trailer for the SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS movie.

was always gonna be bad. you can just tell with some flicks. plus the fact that the character designs are just plain ugly. i didn't dig Finding out there's no fuckin' story Nemo with ALBERT BROOKS doing the same thing he always does- acting like a neurotic retard, the annoying as hell ELLEN DEGENERES and a story that added up to: stop following me, no help me, no stop following me. oh, and the first finnically challenged cartoon fish in cinema history - fuckin hell can it get any more obvious. they've been takin lesson from the master manipulator SPEILBERG... but it did look amazing!) and why are they using HOLLY HUNTER. she's gotta have the worst voice in america cinema. that awful drawl. stop grating your teeth! anyway, er, they're my polite observations on the state of pixar and this other mob.

about Finding Nemo. The movie LOOKED fantastic, but the movie really did not add up to a whole lot. I did not mind Ellen Degeneres, but yeah... Albert Brooks was Albert Brooks, same annoying character he always is (like a poor man's Woody Allen) and in reality, there was not a whole lot of plot to the movie. Father and son... son gets lost... father sets out to get him. The end. But.... THE INCREDIBLES looks absolutely... well.... incredible!

I can't believe some of you didn't like Nemo

    by audiokaratekid

The thing that makes Finding Nemo spectacular is the simple fact that it has heart. To fully appreciate it, you have to be at a certain point in your life. To all you single, childless, cynical talkbackers, of course you can't relate to a story of a father and son. I'm sure anyone who was at such a point in their life would understand the movie as well. I have loved everything Pixar has put out, they produce this surreal sense of wonder that no other studio can even come close to matching. The Incredibles looks amazing, though it worries me a bit too. Perhaps I just don't trust the average moviegoer to fully realize the genius of Pixar. I'm worried that parents will look at the trailer and print ads and perhaps think that it is not what they may consider a "family film". I'm worried that girls may not want to see it and dub it a boy's movie. I'm worried that the perception of this film will hurt it, since most people are too stupid to realize something amazing when it's right in front of their noses, just look at what happened with Brad Bird's other masterpiece, The Iron Giant. I hope I'm wrong, I hope this movie breaks box office records, most notably, I hope it does better than Shrek 2, which was good, but not nearly the earth-altering achievement most people make it out to be. I hope The Incredibles can win the best animated feature Oscar next year too, but that doesn't look too likely either. Although that may just be wishful thinking.

If a movie is made to appeal to a specific type of demographic, it doesn't really have much business calling itself a 'family film'. In the case of Finding Nemo, it had beautiful visuals and the father-son dynamic was cute, but I wouldn't sit through that story a second time. They were trying way too hard to parallel human society which made it less about exploring unique cultures of fish life and instead more about 'human gag jokes' with talking fish. Bug's life was the same thing. At least Toy Story reflected human society IN a human society. Monster's Inc also took place IN human society, and Incredibles is essentially saying 'screw it, we'll dive this puppy straight into human society mythos to parody 'normal human life'. THAT is why this film will have a stronger theme and delivery.

Killer Goat...what the fork are you talking about now?

    by smarkjobber

You said, in reference to "Nemo": "They were trying way too hard to parallel human society which made it less about exploring unique cultures of fish life and instead more about 'human gag jokes' with talking fish. /// Ahem. So what you're saying is that it would have been better for the sea life in "Nemo" not to have been imbued with human characteristics? Clear me up on your point. Because it sounds like you're saying the fish should have been more "fish-like." "Nemo" is not the movie that sprang to ming when you wrote, "...trying way too hard to parallel human society..." Look at "Shark Tale." That's trying too hard. There are clocks and televisions and other electric appliances -- underwater! At the end of the day, the fish in "Nemo" are still fundamentally fish. Yes, they speak and have human personalities, but they don't wear Rolexes and smoke cigars -- Marlin couldn't just dial up other fish from one part of the ocean to the next and ask if they had seen his son. /// You also complain about there being "human gag jokes." Clarify that thought please. Are you insinuating that Pixar should have made the film in the vein of "Winged Migration" or "The Bear," with non-speaking animal roles? If so, who the fuck wants to see a Pixar movie like that? Certainly not Pixar's core audience.

    SmarkJobber, re: Nemo

    by the killer-goat

When I use the term 'talking ________' please be sure you understand that I am using that term as a story formula that's been way overused in many animation stories for too many decades without deviating much from said formula. You're correct that Shark Tale goes to the extreme to capture contemporary pop trends and teen culture (ugh), but I was only evaluating Pixar movies. I would have preferred pixar go the extra mile to take us out of OUR reality by showing us something different. However, I felt Nemo was essentially another Disney storyplot and idea made cgi by subcontract to Pixar, and of course even that wouldn't have been so bad if, as someone else already pointed out, the actors hadn't phoned their own respective celebrity roles for the script; Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres were essentially playing themselves. If you aren't expecting anything other than the standard fare, fine, enjoy it. But as I said, Pixar's done some very innovating things outside of their cgi technology and as pretty as Nemo was to watch, I didn't find it to be their best effort. Visually it was stunning, no doubts or arguments, but when I say 'human gag jokes' I mean that you could have dropped almost ANY animal kingdom in there and it would have been the same thing. That, to me, doesn't do anything to distinguish Nemo from any other 'talking animal' film from Disney. I didn't like Osmosis Jones and it only barely parallels the 'talking animal' category, but they tackled something most companies shied from attempting seriously (they lose points for forcing the contrasted personalities of Chris Rock and David Hyde-Pierce). Iron Giant is another film that found a way to go beyond the 'typical Disney schtick'. I will also reiterate, I didn't say Nemo sucked, only that I don't find it to be Pixar's strongest, they fell back on an overused formula without pushing any boundaries. There were definitely some nods to marine biology and whatnot in Nemo exclusive to undersea life, but mostly for clever and witty opening. If you took all the 'talking animal' films existing today, I'm sure you'd agree some suck worse than others, some improve on the theme abit. We've had PLENTY of talking fish stories by a number of animation studios. I would like to have added Nemo to my library for something other than some beautiful visuals, that's all.
