Looking For That SIN CITY Trailer Everyone

Published at:  Sep 12, 2004 9:54:25 PM CDT

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...

I gotta say... this one could go either way. There’s stuff I like about this footage that was shown at Comic Con, and there’s stuff that makes me nervous. Anytime you create a world this hyperstylized, you’re asking your viewer to take a leap of faith with you, and when it pays off, it’s SKY CAPTAIN. When it fails, it’s COOL WORLD. We’ll see...

Hey Harry, Moriarty and the gang,

I noticed that you hadn't put a link to the Sin City Trailer yet, and I just thought I'd let you know that there are a couple of places you can get it. Moviebox.net currently has a medium size quicktime version of it, but I stumbled upon the larger MP4 format version at the following address.

CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR MARV ON!!

Don't know how they got it, or how much bandwidth they're, so you and all the talkbackers better get it before it disappears. As Joe Bob Briggs would say,"Check it out!"

Later,

The DC Raygun

If you want the Moviebox link, check this one out:

harry, get over to themoviebox.net and check out the comic con footage. sin city may be the largest wild card ever. we'll just wait and see, won't we?

lone wolf

CLICK HERE AND MARVEL AT CARLA GUGINO’S STRUCTURAL PERFECTION!!

I’m definitely rooting for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller on this one. I’d love for it to be something special, and we have to remember... what you’re seeing here isn’t finished. This is just a taste of the film’s final look and feel. As one of our chatters said, it hasn’t been fully “inked” yet. One thing’s for sure... it’s ripped right from the pages of the books, and there won’t be anything else next year that looks like it.

"Moriarty" out.

    wtf

    by burlivesleftnut

I hate to be an uppity naysayer, but that was the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Sure there were some cool visuals during the opening segment, but the rest was over the top bad. It was like an 80s music video gone horribly awry. Are all those black backgrounds going to be replaced with something? Christ, it looked like a Max Fischer Stage Production of Frank Miller's Sin City.

    Never read the comic either

    by seven higgins

I am not much of a comic reader, but I enjoy comic movies. This tease, while not actually being a trailer, is one of the best things I have ever seen. I went from having no interest to wildly anticipating this project. And that is what movie studios prays a trailer will do. I will now activly hunt down everything Sin City related. Props to Miller and especially Hot Rod. I don't know why the DGA is being anal about this. But I am glad to see some artistic integrity these days. I hope Alan Moore can find someone to back him up like Miller did on his next progject.

    by maxcalifornia.

Never read these comics either, but that was about the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. Meh, maybe except for Josh Hartnett. But Mickey fuckin' Rourke looks totally badass in this, it could be the biggest comeback since Travolta in Pulp fiction!

    by grendel824

That looks pretty effin' good. I mean, the movie COULD be ass, but at least it's got some creativity going for it. It looks different. Just like Sky Captain, even if it ends up being "bad," at least it's not the same-old kind of bad.

    looks great to me

    by rupee88

Sure it isn't perfect (they put too much clothes on Nacy), but it still looks like loads of fun. With all the contrived and low-IQ shit that the studios put out every year, you've got to appreciate this. I'll be there on the first weekend for sure. I'm not sure what I'd think if I hadn't read the comics, but I have and it looks wonderful.

You know who will always suck? Joshua Hartnett.

    by smarkjobber

The ComiCon footage looks splendid in spots, and it's obviously faithful to the comic, but...this movie feels like Soundstage City. No space on the screen. I don't like that feeling when I see "Sky Captain" footage, and I certainly don't it here. The actors certainly look like they're having fun, and the tone is unique. If Rodriguez can make "Sin City" better than just "Dick Tracy" on a green screen soundtage, than it will probably be his best film. That's still not saying much. I am hopeful that it entertains, and that's it.

    by duality

I don't think Robert's half-assed look is working. Frank Miller's Sin City is BLACK & WHITE. Not tones.

    Here's how it should look.
    http://img86.exs.cx/img86/8752/sincity-2.jpg

Robert's approach only points out the lack of sets and makes digital elements stand out.

I love Sin City and support Frank 100%. But this lame version looks like a disaster!

    by jim jam bongs

I know that both men are helping to revolutionize the filmmaking process, specifically when it comes to digital post production. But the front end of the whole process still looks "off" visually. I predict it's going to have to take another technological generation or two before digital video can match the image quality of 35mm film stock.

    by mansep

i hope they dont cut in stills from the comic. it doesnt work and constantly reminds how much more powerful the comic is to the film-look. secondly, that music was absolutely awful. i realise it's meant to be noir-jazz but that was really cheesy, the kind you get in old playboy videos. i'm also worried about how flat a lot of the acting is. there was absolutely zero excitemnt in any of those scenes. i think it will be easy to rally behind this film and all the fans (including me) have been really supportive. but if this is really an indication of how the film will be then it's gonna be a real dissappointment to a lot of people. and non-fans will stay away completely.

  • even compared to classic 50s b-movies there was far to much tonal detail in this footage. it made it look very naff - whoever is lighting this film is no expert in b&w lighting. but regardless of that, this film needs to be stark b&w, like this image http://img86.exs.cx/img86/8752/sincity-2.jpg

    by prof. pop-cult

I'm tired of all these crappy looking HDTV "digital film" movies. The technology still isn't advanced enough yet to flawlessly match film. Frankly, in interviews I've read where Robert Rodriguez praises digital video and trashes film, he sounds like he's becomes lazy filmmaker when it comes to the art of cinematography, and shows not much appreciation nor interest for it. He's more infatuated with making his movies on the editing bay and in front of the blue screen now, and it shows in his last three movies, which looked flat, visually compressed, lossy and ugly.

    I disagree

    by hamo455

about non-fans staying away. I've never read Sin City, but I will sure as hell see this film. I base this purely on the fact that it looks interesting and different. It is not a remake of a classic film done with crap actors. It is not a "reimagining" of a shitty old TV series. It is not a sequel to a gaywad romantic or teen comedy. It was not the result of a survey to see if 8 year old girls would like it. For all of these reasons I will go and see this. ARE YOU LISTENING STUDIO GRUNTS? Oh, and I quite like that Bruce Willis guy... No, not like that!

    Duality...I agree with you completely.

    by anlashok

    While the contrasted photoshop jpeg
you posted is a tad too dark in the details area, the concept is right on the money. I'm trying to figure out what seperates Robert's black & white (or should I say greyscale) imagery from any other film of the same nature. Hey Rob, with todays
technology one would think you would be able to actually "mimic" the look of the comic while retaining the necessary details to assuage your movie stars egoes. This is a strictly post-production venture so there's plenty of time to fix it. As it stands kiddo, it looks like your blowing a golden opportunity to avoid the ever pervading cloud of comic film mediocrity. Oh, and I LOVE the Sin City books...which only fuels my concern.

I swear, when I crave that daily dose of stupid, there's no better dealer that AICN. My vote for the #1 movie people don't get. For the generation of MTV's jackass and good charlotte, this movie will miss the mark. THANK GOD for that. You retards can continue to supe up your diatsus and leave the shaping of good taste to your betters. This movie is shaping up to be a vision, something you knuckledraggers will be pirating off the internet 10 years from now when someone informs your drug addled brain that it was a work of art. Until then continue to laugh at skateboarders smash their nuts on handrails and AIDS jokes. There are adults working over here..

    Sin City cast

    by allhailthomyorke

Nick Stahl is one of the most talented actors out there right now. Even if I've loathed some of his characters (well, just one...in Bully), I've always been amazed by his performances.

That being said, however, the person I'm REALLY looking forward to in this film is Elijah Wood.

With regards to the visual technology side of things.

    by rowanm

I think the technology is already here. Robert just needs to get the right talent on board. It's like a bad carpenter blaming his tools. It's a pretty new technology and more people are needed to fill the void in that area of expertise. Give it another decade and hopefully all the talent we need to bring the richness of the visuals to the foreground will be well in place. At the moment we have to deal with the flatness of Lucas style visuals created by people who are still trying to draw the full potential out of the technology of their craft. Imagination and skill is the key

...quit your bitchin and go read one of the fucking books for christ' sake. this movie look exactly like the books. dark solid shapes and intense lighting. i'm not so sure about the casting but i guess bruce willis is ok. he seems too skinny to be marv but whatever. miller is behind the wheel and that's good enough for me. finally a comic book adaptation that aint gonna suck as much as the xmens or the hulk.
