Free AICN - SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW Event w/ Kerry & Kevin Conran!
Hey folks, Harry here... There are very few films in the history of this site that I've been as giddily excitable and enthusiastic about seeing as I am about SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. When I read the script back in May of last year - I had a waking dream of what the film could be, what I hoped it would be. Long before my life took rather radical changes in fortune and opportunities. It was based entirely upon one thing... a script for a movie then called, THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. A completely independent sci-fantasy pulp film project taking place on the outer fringe of film production. At the time, the film had no distributor and was a giant question mark. Now, the film has been garnering praises from most everyone that has seen it. The New York junket was reportedly quite thrilled by what they saw of the final film, and I've heard some top critics are about to annoint the film as greatness. Cool.
Through all of this, I've still not seen the film. Obviously, I've spoken quite a bit with Kerry Conran about a certain future we share recently, but each time I was offered a chance to see the film early and by myself I turned it down for one simple reason. I didn't want to see a rough print of this movie. I didn't want to sit in an empty dark theater with perhaps 5 others and watch the film alone. After the various test screenings, the San Diego screening and the enthused ramblings of the West Coast AICNers... I was dying to see this film with a packed audience here in Austin ready to be thrilled.
Well, this Saturday, September 11th, 2004 at the Alamo Drafthouse LakeCreek @ 8pm... We're going to see SKY CAPTAIN & THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and have a helluva good time with it! Kerry & Kevin Conran are coming in for the screening - and will share their experiences making this film with us. We might even have further special guests there as well. Afterwards - we'll have an after party in the large lobby of the LakeCreek with an open bar, tons of food and Blimp Wars commencing in the stratosphere therein. Music and merriment... Heck, there's even a chance to perhaps hear a word or two about Conran's trip to Barsoom that he's about to engage in. Personally I can't wait to hear about that one! Ahem...
So - How much will this event cost you? -Not a red cent. This one's for free folks. That's right, the film, the Q&A, the booze and the munchies... Even the wanton blimp destruction and mayhem... free... the lot of it.
How do you get to go? Well -- I've been thinking about that. Just write a brief paragraph or two about your dream about the world of tomorrow... What you hope this film will be like... Why you'd love to go?
I've got about 160 seats to fill - so give it a go - you're odds are pretty good. Each entry I pick, please specify if you'll need 1 ticket or 2. The Deadline is SEPTEMBER 5th & you'll be notified by September 6th if you have been chosen! To Enter, you will send your entry to:

I hope to see you good folks there! For me, a film set in this universe has been with me since I first began to dream of movies. But then, I'm a glorious freak of a filmlover... how about you?

Its brilliant how with the advent of CGI anything is possible movie wise these days. The only limit is our imagination. I hope to see more ambitious projects in the future and hopefully the studios will take more risks with them. Amazing visuals AND a superb story is what we need to see more off. Bring it on.

Dude, transitive verbs have to be followed by an object. Who or what will be owned by this movie?

You know, like Indy: Sky Captain And The Fate Of Atlantis, Sky Captain And Secret Of The Sphinx, Sky Captain And The Law Of Diminishing Returns... It'll be ironic if Jude Law turned down Superman because he didn't want to commit to a series, but gets contractually obligated to a bunch of Sky Captain movies.

by minderbinder
I'm partly kidding. I assume Jude (or any of the other actors) wouldn't mind doing sequels or prequels, since they shot the whole thing in like two weeks.

Probably should be it's own article, but here you go.

And Sky Captain has to save them. That way, all the people who were also too dull to appreciate THP can complain about "not getting" two films at once!

If I had the opportunity and the cash to fly (etc...), I would go in a heartbeat. But you know, ... wife, baby, responsibilities, etc... Yeah, ... the geek fanboy in me would also want to take some art samples and talk as one "artist/comic book geek" to another... Yeah, not everyone can pursue "the impossible dream" of becoming a filmmaker. -- I just wish them amazing success (on behalf of those like myself) and I will enthusiastically follow their careers. And thanks for the "chance", Harry. ...Just don't feel too bad for me, 'cause I'll be watching "SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW" at the local theatre. And here's to hoping that it'll be like seeing "STAR WARS" that first time. (Hey, Harry! -- Any chance I could get an autographed movie-poster?!! I'd have it framed for permanent display!!!) -- Have fun you guys!!!

And I too would love to be there...I got to be the second biggest fan after Harry. Yeah, pun intended, but it's true. Oh well. One can always pursue thier dreams of being the next Kerry Conran in their spare moments, making graphic novels or whatever. -
I have a terrible sense of direction, but I think i'll have to make a bid for this. I live in Dallas, so if I said I couldn't make it because of distance it would be cop-out. All these years i've wanted to attend a Butt-Numb-A-Thon. This will be my best shot at seeing an AICN movie event. I've got to make an attempt.

What, are they going to pump Harry's ass full of helium?
Sorry, had to do say it. :) -
Never lift the head of someone who's fainted... Keep him flat and brace his legs. Now, loosen his clothes and use a wet cloth...and knowing is half the battle.

Somebody had to.
-
And you'll notice it's the 7th. So it's taking longer than they expected; be patient.

Please Harry, we are waiting!!!!

You SHOULD be excited this is one VERY nice movie. They just had an advanced screening last night here in Seattle as part of the SciFi Museum / Seattle Internation Film Festival. Kerry Conran was there to answer questions after the movie too.
Don't debate the finer plot points or go Star Trek over the technology. This is an old action/adventure feature. The humor is great and the look in incredible. VERY NICELY DONE!
