Report about the set of Spike Lee's SON OF SAM

Published at:  Aug 09, 1998 2:27:46 AM CDT

Alright, there isn't a ton of news here, but there's just something wonderfully subversive about this report that I love putting up on a Sunday Morning. Hee hee hee, just call me evil...

Agent Xander here, with a funny tidbit about Spike's SUMMER OF SAM. A week
ago Friday, I was walking down West 3rd St. in Manhattan and, at the corner
of MacDougal St. saw a flyer indicating that SUMMER OF SAM was shooting down
the block and that they were going to be dressing some of the businesses on
the block to match the movie's period setting. Well, what that meant was,
they turned a store into a sleazy, mid-'70s gay porn theater as a set for
the scene they were filming! There was an authentic-looking beat-up marquee
labelling the place "Male World", and the outside of the building was
plastered for posters of '70s-era gay porn films.

This was a hilarious sight, not only because MacDougal is a major drag for
tourists, but because it seemed almost like an up-yours to our iron-fisted
Mayor Giuliani's well-publicized crackdown on adult businesses. Spike's fake
porn theater was within 500 feet of both a school and a church (an absolute
no-no for porn stores under the new law), and the filming took place on the
same day that the city began padlocking strip clubs that violated the new
law!

Sayonara,

Agent Xander

    Spike takes city back!

    by andrew killiebrew

I love the irony of Spike Lee having adult entertainment centers simulated in the city on the same day that fascist mayor Guiliani is cracking down on the real life versions. But after all, Spike laid his claim to NYC years before "His Honor" did!

Spike's also filming right now on
23rd St bet. 7th and 8th, right around the famed Chelsea Hotel.

So a porn theater near a school is a good thing?

    by mr. bungle

Agent Xander seems to think the idea that Rudy Giuliani's "iron-fisted" distaste for adult establishments near schools and churches being ridiculed by Spike Lee is "hilarious". The fact that Lee put a (albeit fake) porn theater within 500 feet of a school and a church is just reason #5,412 not to give a damn about his talentless "films". Like ultra-cool Sam Jackson sez, Spike should shut up and make a decent movie, neither of which he's been capable of doing lately.

This must have been on Spike's career highlight list. Right next to having "Girl 6" on Cinemax at 3:00am every night.

    I'm going to be SICK

Bad Dog... pull the corn cob out of you-know-where and lighten up. If you can't appreciate the irony, that's one thing. But to slam the spy and Spike Lee because you can't take a joke is, well, typical of most religious people I know...

    TSW..

Irony is one thing, but a disregard for community standards is another. Let's say you're gay. Would it be "a joke" for me to parade in front of your house with a "AIDS kills fags dead" sign? No, it would be an affront to your individual civil rights, not to mention a general sense of decency.

But what really gets me mad is that kids were involved. I'm not religious, as you claim (I happen not to believe in God), but I am a father, and to laugh off this incident as a joke just reaffirms my faith in my fellow man. Good show.

    Who should lighten up?

    by andy

Ok, one person calls another person a facist, but it's other people who need to chill out? Anybody bringing up Nazi's over shutting down a porn shop definitely needs to calm down. I have no problem with what Spike Lee's doing, but the Mayor is doing an awesome job. NYC was a total nightmare before he came along. I'm sorry if the prostitutes and crack heads don't feel wanted anymore.
